Being an ESL student — English as a second language — can be a painful experience. It’s election season at Canaan Elementary’s second grade, in Patchogue, N.Y., and tensions are running high. Today is speech day, and right now it’s Chris Palaez’s turn.
The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With a thick mohawk and a mischievous glimmer in his dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would be unfazed by public speaking.
But he’s nervous.
«I’m here to tell you today why you should … should …» Chris trips on the «-ld,» a pronunciation landmine for many non-native English speakers. His teacher, Thomas Whaley, is next to him, whispering support. «… Vote for … me …»
Despite some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well.
A son of Ecuadoran immigrants who was born and raised in the U.S., Chris started learning English a little over three years ago. Whaley recalls how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read, Chris would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.
Being an ESL student — English as a second language — can be a painful experience. Many of us who have been ESL students know what it’s like to get pulled out of class in front of everyone, so you can learn to master the verbs and retrain your tongue to twist differently from what your parents taught you.
What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes.
«It takes a lot for any student,» Whaley explains, «especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, ‘I don’t know, but I want to know.’ «
Chris wraps up his speech, and Whaley invites the rest of the class — which is made up of both ESL students and native speakers — to praise him. «Say thank you,» he prods Chris gently, who smiles sheepishly on the podium.
«Thank you,» Chris gleams.
Impeccably dressed, with a gravelly Long Island accent that turns one vowel into many, Whaley does not look like the kind of guy that dabbles in magic markers. Before he was a second-grade teacher, he worked at a public relations company in New York City.
He says he started thinking about doing something else while riding to and from work on the Long Island Rail Road. «I would talk with people on the train at 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the way home,» he recalls. «They were people who had a complete disconnect from the young people of the world. They were all so focused on adults and the rat race. And I realized that this was not for me.»
That was 16 years ago. He has been teaching ever since.
In addition, Whaley has found time to write a novel called Leaving Montana, and he’s starting to write children’s books. Last year, he won the New York state teacher-of-the-year award.
This second-grade presidential campaign is an example of why. He tells me he got the idea when he asked the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a U.S. president.
The answer broke his heart.
«Almost every single child who is an English-language learner believed that they couldn’t be,» Whaley recalls. They’d say things like, » ‘I can’t run for president because my parents are from a different country.’ That was a biggie. ‘Because I’m poor, and you need a lot of money to be the president.’ ‘Because I don’t like to read, or I can’t read.’ «
Whaley says the presidential speech project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast about themselves.
«Bragging about yourself, and your best qualities,» Whaley says, «is very difficult for a child who came into the classroom not feeling any confidence whatsoever to read three or four words.»
Robert Epstein, the principal at Canaan Elementary, says this is the essence of what makes Whaley such a great teacher.
«There’s a sense of community that’s really unsurpassed,» and the students will take risks as a result, Epstein says. He adds that Whaley goes above and beyond what is expected of him as a teacher. «If one needs sneakers, I’ve seen him go out and buy sneakers. He’s gone to homes. He’s constantly on the phone, constantly emailing parents.»
It’s not an easy job, juggling native speakers’ needs with those of the ESL students. There are a lot of late afternoons and coming in early.

On one Tuesday morning, I drive through Long Island before the traffic gets bad. The school is quiet, except for Whaley’s class. Many of the parents have dropped their kids off early, and Whaley is here with them.
«A tall metal lady stands on Liberty Island on New York Harbor,» he reads, his voice booming into the empty hallway.
Today his students are learning about a history they are now a part of.
«Last but not least ‘immigrants,’ » says Whaley. «Now this is a very important word, because we’ve been learning about our ancestors.»
Whaley himself is the grandchild of Italian immigrants who settled in Long Island. He tells me he often finds himself wishing they’d taught him to speak Italian, so he could be bilingual, like many of his students.
«Did all of our ancestors always live in the United States of America?» he asks.
There’s a collective, «No.»
«My mom and my dad where born in Ecuador,» chimes in one girl.
«There you go,» Whaley says. «So a lot of your ancestors are from Ecuador. They were all this word: immigrant. Immigrants. Someone who comes from a different country, to a new country …»
«To live a better life,» the little girl interrupts him.
«To live a better life.» Whaley smiles. «You are absolutely right.»

You most likely are! It would be easier to judge your qualification if you could specify your country of origin. However, ESL stands for English Second Language teacher, meaning you would have to be able to speak the country’s first language as well. In Australia you would be a regular English teacher then, unless you are teaching Indigenous students speaking different Aboriginal languages.

- Free travels. Basically, you are getting paid to travel! Why bother waiting the whole year for 2-weeks vacation, if you can simply be on a paid vacation the whole year!
- You practice your English. Constantly. Everywhere. Your English gets updated. Your skills improve.
- You start understanding different levels of educational background and start adjusting your teaching methods accordingly. This is not just: read the text and answer the questions, as you used to do with your students in your home country. This is live communication with the people who don’t speak your language!!
- You have no choice but to learn another language. Free. Most of the times school or training center offer free classes of the language of the country of origin. Besides, students are very excited if you use a few words in their language. You become popular. You become a star in your own eyes.
- Students appreciate you. They learn better, because you are an interesting object for them to explore. They listen to you, they copy you, which is a great challenge, because you carry the responsibility of being a positive, and only positive example for them to follow.
Did I want to become a school teacher when I was a university student? No. But being a foreign ESL teacher changed my perception, and gave me the happiest experiences in my life.

Since English is the language that dominates the international business world, there are students everywhere looking for a certified English teacher. You could explore Seoul in South Korea, Chile in South America, or enjoy the sun and siestas in Spain! The options are endless and many jobs will offer advice and assistance with legal processes and housing.
Exposure to New Cultures
It’s one thing to visit a country and experience the culture but it’s quite another to immerse yourself in it for a period of time. Nothing will ever compare to spending ‘Noche Buena’ (Christmas Eve) stuffing your face with endless streams of homemade tapas while old Tío Antonio tells you tales of times past. Completely throwing yourself into another culture is unbelievably enriching and actually teaches you to appreciate your own even more!
International Certification
Many academies will tell you that English teachers are a dime a dozen, however, they would be hard-pressed to say the same about quality internationally certified ESL teachers. Because international certification calls for stricter standards in their programs, teachers who complete TEFL courses with this certification are usually preferred over their peers who don’t have it. More autonomy with lesson plans/creativity
Traditional teachers are usually required to follow a specific curriculum and aren’t allowed much room for their own creativity. As an ESL teacher, this can vary greatly. Oscar Wilde once said, «Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes». This holds true for everyone starting out in a new career, and ESL teachers are no exception. But one thing is accepting we’ll make mistakes as we go and chalk it up to a lack of experience, and another is completely ignoring the worst kind of mistakes you could make.
Since anyone can learn from their mistakes, then we can certainly learn from the five worst mistakes beginner ESL teachers make.
1. Taking up all of the talking time
In an ESL class, what is the most common reason students are enrolled? They want to SPEAK English! And what happens when the teacher speaks most of the time?
They don’t have enough chances to actually practice their speaking skills. Those who are new to ESL teaching often make this very crucial mistake: They take up too much of the talking time, either because they feel uncomfortable around silence or long pauses, or because they are
over-enthusiastic to share their knowledge. So clearly, hogging most of the talking time is out of the question.
But, how to find the right balance between student talking time and teacher talking time?
As a general rule of thumb, students should speak for 70% of the class time, while teachers speak for the remaining 30%. These percentages could be tweaked in cases where students are absolute beginners , or at the other end of the spectrum, very advanced learners in need of intensive speaking practice . This means that in most cases, your participation should be limited to giving instructions and explaining essential points, but above all to eliciting response from students and facilitating all types of speaking activities.
2. Ignoring boundaries between teacher and students
ESL teachers should be friendly and strive to bond with students in order to achieve the best learning outcomes. But there’s a line between being friendly and being a friend. A teacher is meant to be an authority figure, one that is most definitely not on equal terms with students. This is a very common mistake in young teachers, especially because they might be the same age as their students. It’s all right to share some personal things and talk about family, pets, interests or hobbies.
But you must never let it get too personal. Any personal information shared must be supplied to give students context when they are learning something new. It is not meant to be shared so you may be accepted by students.
This is when the lines become blurred and students get confused. You lose all authority and any effective classroom management is severely compromised.
Be on friendly terms, talk about your dog or what you did last weekend, but make sure students feel there is a boundary that can’t be crossed.
3. Poor or inconsistent classroom management
This is one of the mistakes that is often made due to a lack of experience. Classroom management is not an exact science; it’s not like teaching the past simple tense. Each group of student is different and rules must be set as a group.
The problem stems from the fact that new teachers may not have a clearly defined teaching style. So, they either become too strict or too lax. There are plenty of articles you can read on effective classroom management; you may agree with some of the techniques, you may disagree with others and choose to implement your own. For example, you may choose to forego stickers as a means of rewarding students, and choose another method.
It’s not about being stricter, but rather being consistent. There’s nothing worse for a group of students than empty promises or weak threats. Once you define how you’ll manage your class, stick to it!
4. Forgetting cultural differences
Some teachers are so focused on teaching things about the English culture, they completely ignore their students’. Some gestures ESL teachers commonly use in the classroom, like the gesture for OK, may be very rude in other cultures. In some countries, students may be used to lecturing, and may not react positively when you propose a game. This is a mistake ESL teachers make above all in foreign countries where the culture is very different from Western culture, like Arabic or Oriental cultures.
Learn about their customs, especially greetings, and use this information to create a positive learning environment.
5. Not gathering enough information on students’ backgrounds and needs
How many beginner ESL teachers start a lesson with a new group and don’t even find out where they’ve studied English before, how long, and with which results?
What if you have a student who has studied English countless times, off and on, over the last 20 years, but is still at an intermediate level? It doesn’t matter if you obtain this information from your department head or from the students themselves; this is essential information to have if you want your students to advance, to make progress in their English language skills.
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, for mistakes will surely be made. There are valuable lessons to be learned from each and every one. Start by avoiding the ones listed above, and you’ll start your teaching career off on the right foot.
