A. A unique food battle festival known as La Tomatina is celebrated in Spain every year on the last Wednesday of August. It involves thousands of people engaging in a brutal battle, throwing overripe tomatoes at each other. The festival spans more than a week and although there are many elements to the festival, such as parades, music, dancing and fireworks, they are all centered on the tomato fight.
B. Spanish cuisine is a heavenly mixture of chicken, mixed vegetables, fish and meats. Many of the most popular Spanish dishes are a type of Paella, which is a rice dish that features a variety of ingredients. Hot chocolate and churros are very popular desserts throughout the country. Spain is also famous for its aromatic wines and other alcoholic beverages like Sangria, Cava and authentic Spanish beer.
C. Spain is very rich with traditions, especially those associated with food. For breakfast, some families buy fresh churros, pair them with hot chocolate and enjoy a leisurely morning routine. Lunch is another important meal of the day, and it is usually heavier than breakfast. This is sometimes followed by a siesta, an afternoon nap to get through post-lunch drowsiness. During this time, shops close and then open again after two or three hours of rest.
D. Spain is an important resting spot for migratory birds, and a home for many animals. But, unfortunately, many species of wildlife face threats from habitat loss and pollution. Due to centuries of tree cutting, large forests are now found only in a few areas in the country. Spain has created many national parks and refuges, but they cover only about seven percent of the country.
E. Although there is a national parliament, Spain is one of the most decentralized democracies in Europe. Each of its 17 regions manages its own schools, hospitals, and other public services. The tourist services industry drives Spain’s economy, but at the same time, since 1986, when Spain joined the European Community, it has worked to diversify its economy, by building important industries such as mining, shipbuilding, and textiles.
F. Bullfighting is one of the most famous traditions in Spain. This risky sport evolved from the ancient Roman gladiator games, with human matadors opposing charging bulls. However, this tradition has lately become widely debated and younger generations and animal-rights activists protest against bullfighting. Either way, it remains an iconic part of the country and bullfights take place in many Spanish towns and cities.
G. La siesta is a well-known aspect of Spanish culture. Seeking to balance work with pleasure, Spaniards have long practiced this tradition, when students and professionals return to their homes around midday for a big lunch, followed by a few hours of rest and family time. Many businesses also shut down for a short break. However, 21st-century big cities move at a faster pace, and don’t take siestas, but many people in smaller towns and villages still take a siesta each day.

Month : August
Place : Valencia, Spain
Famous For : Food Fight Festival
Attractions : Throwing of tomatoes, music, parades, dancing & fireworks .
La Tomatina is a food fight festival observed in the town of Bunol in Valencia, Spain. It is held every year on the last Wednesday of August. The most unique attraction of this week-long festival is the one hour in which tens of metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Other features of this tomato bash include music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. Participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest on the night before the festival.
Major Attractions
The start of the festival of La Tomatina dates back to 1945, but it was officially recognized after 1952. On this occassion of La Tomatina, it is tradition for the women to wear all white and the men to wear no shirts. The festival is celebrated in honor of the town’s patron saints, St. Louis Bertrand (San Luis Bertron) and the Mare de Du dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary. There are no certain reasons behind the start of this fun gala, however, possible theories on how the Tomatina began include a pie local food fight among friends. Other stories like a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the chaotic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage are also interesting. One of the most popular theories is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed so much that it was repeated the next year, and the year after that, and so on.

D. Entertainment with animals
E. Population
F. Time to relax
G. With nature
H. Spain as a state
4. Spain is an important resting spot for migratory birds, and a home for many animals. But, unfortunately, many species of wildlife face threats from habitat loss and pollution. Due to centuries of tree cutting, large forests are now found only in a few areas in the country. Spain has created many national parks and refuges,
but they cover only about seven percent of the country.

A. Reasons to be afraid
B. Fight your fear
C. A place of wonders
D. How to say thank you
E. Visiting for wild life and animals
F. Learn to be grateful
G. It’s never late to learn
H. Reading non-verbal language
1. Nowadays when it’s all too easy to send an email or text, the best way to show that you are grateful to somebody is to actually mail a hand-written card. The person who gets it will know you took the extra time and thought to write a card and put it in the mail with a nice stamp. That person will appreciate your efforts much more. Plus, you’ll get the added bonus of feeling grateful a little longer than usual as you write out each note and wait for it to arrive.
2. Music is a noble passion, and people who can play a musical instrument have always been seen as intelligent people. Learning how to play a musical instrument is far more efficient if you do it in childhood. However, there are millions of adults who learn to enjoy music throughout their lives. Moreover, they don’t focus on just one instrument, but specialize in two or even more, if they have the time and the necessary ambition.
3. Millions of people avoid air travel each year because of their fear of flying. The fear of accidents happening is probably the most common fear among air travellers. It is an understandable fear, since there have been many aviation accidents throughout history. Some people may have a fear that the plane has some type of malfunction or breakdown, while others may have a fear that the weather or turbulance will affect the plane.
4. Try to understand that being scared is just an illusion that makes you limited and miserable. Take control of your mind and don’t let your imagination create frightening pictures in your head. If you cannot deal with it, you should make attempts to leave your comfort zone. Choose things and activities you are afraid of and meet your worries face to face, because it is impossible to run away from them. Just face your troubles no matter how powerful they may seem.
5. When you get chronically bored with something, your mind gets used to seeing the world negatively. It is necessary to break the chain of negative thoughts and train your mind to notice the best. Just write down 5 things you are thankful for. This way, your mind will change for the better in a while. The thankfulness will open your eyes to the beauty of the world around you and will help you to focus on positive moments in your life.
6. If you go to Ireland, go to isolated distant places in the country, talk to the locals and they will tell you the stories about the mythical Irish place, called the Otherworld. They believe that it is the land of paradise and happiness. In Irish poetry and tales, it is described as a series of islands near Ireland where the various fairytale creatures lived. Also the Otherworld seemed to be able to move from one location to another.
7. Many people can understand the nature of character without talking to the person they are interested in. The gestures and postures usually reflect the mood and the level of the person’s confidence. It’s easy to notice a highly confident person even in a big group of people. They stand in one place without constant moving from place to place, and they always make eye contact with the person they are talking to.

Each year, thousands of tourists and locals gather in Valencia, Spain to participate in a tomato-throwing festival known as La Tomatina. The one-hour food fight is part of a larger celebration of Spain’s rich history and traditions and is largely considered a rite of passage for anyone traveling through Spain.
Year after year, the festival generates striking photos that captivate viewers around the world. Find out what started it all and how to celebrate La Tomatina with Socarrat below.
What is La Tomatina Festival?
La Tomatina takes place each year at the end of August in Buñol, Valencia. The festival is part of a week-long celebration in honor of the town’s patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), the Virgin Mary.
At roughly 11 am, tourists gather in the city center, where they are met with truckloads of tomatoes ripe for throwing. Participants then have one hour to throw as many tomatoes as possible in as many directions as possible.
The food frenzy may feel chaotic, but it’s not totally lawless. Participants are directed to crush tomatoes before launching them towards other festival attendees to help avoid injuries. Additionally, participants are encouraged to bring protective gear like goggles and earplugs.
Once the madness is over, the city’s fire department comes in to clean up the mess. Coincidentally, the citric acid found in tomatoes makes for a great cleaning agent, so the city actually ends up cleaner than it was before the festival. Afterward, participants usually head down to a nearby river to clean off, and the celebrations continue into the night with food and music.
What is the History Behind La Tomatina festival?
Several legends about La Tomatina’s origins exist, the primary one being that a street brawl broke out near a spilled-over vegetable stand in 1945. Those involved in the dispute began throwing tomatoes at one another, and the first tomato toss marked the start of what is now known as the world’s biggest food fight.
Every year since then, locals have returned to the scene to recreate the legendary food fight. The tradition was officially recognized in 1952, and in 1980, City Council took over the organization. La Tomatina is now a ticketed event that attracts more than 30,000 attendees each year.
Why is La Tomatina such a food fight?
Throwing 300,000 pounds of tomatoes in a city-wide food fight might strike some as wasteful, but the festival has purposes other than pure entertainment. La Tomatina only uses tomatoes that are deemed unfit for consumption and would otherwise be thrown away, so the festival actually reduces waste.
The festival purchases low-quality, overripe tomatoes for a low price from the Extremadura region of Spain. And thanks to a heavy tourist presence, the festival helps generate significant revenue for the town of Buñol.
The entire week of festivities leading up to La Tomatina revolves heavily around food, and tomato throwing isn’t the only bizarre tradition. Before the food fight begins, La Tomatina attendees compete to see who can capture a ham from atop a greased pole. When the ham is captured, the food fight officially begins. If no one manages to reach the ham, the fight starts at 11 am sharp.
One of the most notable events leading up to La Tomatina is a massive paella cooking contest. The rice dish is a staple of Spanish cuisine, and it just so happens to have originated in Valencia, where the festival is held.
Although it started in animosity, la Tomatina now brings together thousands of people from all across the globe for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to cut loose and delve into Spain’s rich, if strange, history.
How Can I Celebrate La Tomatina From Home?
La Tomatina is canceled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn’t mean the celebration can’t go on from home. While you can’t throw tomatoes, you can certainly enjoy them as part of a traditional Spanish feast.
Socarrat offers a wide variety of Spanish staples, including a traditional suckling pig feast, various types of tapas, and of course, paella. The best part is that you can have them delivered directly to your address, so you can celebrate from the comfort of your own home. Find out more about Socarrat at home delivery here.
People of all nationalities celebrate festivals to mark a religious event, to commemorate some significant occasions in their history, to preserve their traditions and just for merry-making. Festivals are organized to unite people and to provide entertainment. Every country has its own unique customs and events. There are many famous festivals around the world such as the Carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and Venice. They are very large and colourful events which draw huge crowds of local people and tourists. But there are a lot of smaller festivals going on in different countries every day of the year. Some of them are quite usual. Others are bizarre and crazy.
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol in the Valencia region of Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a brutal battle and to get a memorable experience. The tomato fight has been a tradition in Buhol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated. There is a theory that a simple tomato fight between a group of friends in the town’s main square — Plaza del Pueblo — has turned into the world’s largest food fight. Shopkeepers along the Plaza use huge plastic covers in order to protect their storefronts. At around 10 a. m.
Many trucks haul 90, OOO pounds of tomatoes into the center of the town. The festival does not begin until one brave person has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the ham at the top. But this process is very hard and takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meat. During the fight the participants must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety reasons. The fighting begins and ends within the space of an hour. Then the cleaning process begins: dirty combatants take showers and fire trucks spray water down the streets.
The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling, England
The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling is an annual event held on the second May Bank Holiday at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire, England. Competitors race down the hill after a Double Gloucestercheese, and the first person over the line wins the cheese. Competitors are trying to catch the cheese, but it is almost impossible as it can reach speeds up to 70 mph. The festival has been going for over 100 years. The master of ceremonies wearing a top hat and a white coat releases the 7 pound cheese and allows the competitors to throw themselves down the hill. Such a risky adventure often results in minor and serious injuries and some people have to be carted off by ambulance. Children aren’t allowed to race, but there are a few uphill races for boys and girls.
There are eccentric and fun-loving people among Americans as well. If you want to remember your childhood and get muddy, the annual World Pillow Fighting Championships are for you. Anyone over the age of 14 can take part in the fight. Competitors have to stand on a slippery wet pole suspended over a pit of mud holding a wet feather pillow in one hand. The first contestant to topple his opponent into the mud wins the fall. On the whole the fight is rather entertaining and funny.
The Finnish are fond of organizing odd festivals. One of them is the Wife Carrying Championships in Sonkajarvi. If a man wants to take part in the championships, he must bring a wife but not necessarily his.
The World Pillow Fighting Championships, the USA
The Wife Carrying
Championships, Finland
Carrying their wives contestants must negotiate a 253.5 metre course covering sand, grass and asphalt. It is rather difficult but the winner gets his wife’s weight in beer.
There are a lot of other bizarre festivals in the world such as Great American Bathtub Race in Alaska, the USA, the World Sauna Championships in Heinola, Finland, the World’s Biggest Liar Competition in Wasdale, England, Camel Wrestling in the Aegean region, Turkey and many other festivals in different parts of the world. Maybe some of them are silly and crazy but they remind us that life is not boring at all and we should derive as much pleasure as we can from it. Besides laughter makes us healthier and lengthens our lives.
