My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel,’ said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; ‘in the meantime you must try and put up with me.*

Framton Nuttel endeavoured to say the correct something which should duly flatter the niece of the moment without unduly discounting the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing.

‘I know how it will be,’ his sister had said when he was preparing to migrate to this rural retreat; ‘you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice.’

Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction, came into the nice division.

‘Do you know many of the people round here?’ asked the niece, when she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion.

‘Hardly a soul,’ said Framton. ‘My sister was staying here, at the rectory, you know, some four years ago, and she gave me letters of introduction to some of the people here.’

He made the last statement in a tone of distinct regret.

‘Then you know practically nothing about my aunt?’ pursued the self-possessed young lady.

‘Only her name and address,’ admitted the caller. He was wondering whether Mrs. Sappleton was in the married or widowed state. An indefinable something about the room seemed to suggest masculine habitation.

‘Her great tragedy happened just three years ago; that would be since your sister’s time. You may wonder why we keep that window wide open on an October afternoon,’ said the niece, indicating a large French window that opened on to a lawn.

‘It is quite warm for the time of the year,’ said Framton; ‘but has that window got anything to do with the tragedy?’

‘Out through that window, three years ago, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day’s shooting. They never came back. In crossing the moor to their favourite snipe-shooting ground they were all three engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog. It had been that dreadful wet summer, you know, and places that were safe in other years gave way suddenly without warning. Their bodies were never recovered. That was the dreadful part of it.’

Here the child’s voice lost its self-possessed note and became falteringly human. ‘Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back someday, they and the little brown spaniel that was lost with them, and walk in at that window just as they used to do. That is why the window is kept open every evening till it is quite dusk. Poor dear aunt, she has often told me how they went out, her husband with his white waterproof coat over his arm, and Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing ‘Bertie, why do you bound?’ as he always did to tease her, because she said it got on her nerves. Do you know, sometimes on still, quiet evenings like this, I almost get a creepy feeling that they will all walk in through that window’

She broke off with a little shudder. It was a relief to Framton when the aunt bustled into the room with a whirl of apologies for being late in making her appearance.

‘I hope Vera has been amusing you?’ she said.

‘She has been very interesting,’ said Framton.

‘I hope you don’t mind the open window,’ said Mrs. Sappleton briskly; ‘my husband and brothers will be home directly from shooting, and they always come in this way. They’ve been out for snipe in the marshes today, so they’ll make a fine mess over my poor carpets.’

She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible. It was certainly an unfortunate coincidence that he should have paid his visit on this tragic anniversary.

‘The doctors agree in ordering me complete rest, an absence of mental excitement, and avoidance of anything in the nature of violent physical exercise,’ announced Framton, who laboured under the tolerably widespread delusion that total strangers and chance acquaintances are hungry for the least detail of one’s ailments and infirmities, their cause and cure. ‘On the matter of diet they are not so much in agreement,’ he continued.

‘No?’ said Mrs. Sappleton, in a voice which only replaced a yawn at the last moment. Then she suddenly brightened into alert attention but not to what Framton was saying.

‘Here they are at last!’ she cried. ‘Just in time for tea, and don’t they look as if they were muddy up to the eyes?!’

Framton shivered slightly and turned towards the niece with a look intended to con-, vey sympathetic comprehension. The child was staring out through the open window with a dazed horror in her eyes. In a chill shock of nameless fear Framton swung round in his seat and looked in the same direction.

In the deepening twilight three figures were walking across the lawn towards the window, they all carried guns under their arms, and one of them was additionally burdened with a white coat hung over his shoulders. A tired brown spaniel kept close at their heels. Noiselessly they neared the house, and then a hoarse young voice chanted out of the dusk: ‘I said, Bertie, why do you bound?’

Framton grabbed wildly at his stick and hat; the hall door, the gravel drive, and the front gate were dimly noted stages in his headlong retreat.

‘Here we are, my dear,’ said the bearer of the white mackintosh, coming in through the window, ‘fairly muddy, but most of it is dry. Who was that man who bolted out as we came up?’

‘A most extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel,’ said Mrs. Sappleton; ‘could only talk about his illnesses, and dashed off without a word of goodbye or apology when you arrived. One would think he had seen a ghost.’

‘I expect it was the spaniel,’ said the niece calmly; ‘he told me he had a horror of dogs. He was once hunted into a cemetery somewhere on the banks of the Ganges by a pack of pariah dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug grave with the creatures snarling and grinning and foaming just above him. Enough to make anyone lose their nerve.’ Romance at short notice was her speciality.

The Model Millionaire

His father had bequeathed him his cavalry sword, and a History of the Peninsular War in fifteen volumes. Hughie hung the first over his looking-glass, put the second on a shelf between Ruff’s Guide and Bailey’s Magazine, and lived on two hundred a year that an old aunt allowed him. He had tried everything. He had gone to the Stock Exchange for six months; but what was a butterfly to do among bulls and bears? He had been a tea-merchant for a little longer. Then he had tried A26 selling dry sherry. That did not answer either. Ultimately he became nothing, a delightful, ineffectual young man with a perfect profile and no profession.

To make matters worse, he was in love. The girl he loved was Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired Colonel who had lost his A27 temper and his digestion in India, and had never found either of them again. Laura adored him, and he was ready to kiss her shoe-strings. They were the loveliest couple in London, and had not a penny between them. The Colonel was very A28 fond of Hughie, but would not hear of any engagement.

‘Come to me, my boy, when you have got ten thousand pounds of your own, and we will see about it,’ he used to say; and Hughie looked very glum on those days, and had to go to Laura for consolation.

3. Too complicated to use

4. Bad for business

5. Science brings hope

6. Road incident

7. More parking places

8. Personal choice

A. City centre parking is expensive and many important roads are now closed to private transport. This would be fine — if public transport was cheap and convenient, but it is neither. The result is that people are avoiding the city centre so restaurants, cinemas and shops are closing.

B. The motorcyclist drew along side and I heard abusive language as he banged on the car roof. I immediately locked the car doors and tried to work out what was wrong. He then shouted that I had almost collided with him. Truth to tell — I didn’t see him until now. I tried to apologize but he wouldn’t listen.

C. They now have cars that run on electricity, solar power and even on vegetable oil. New petrol engines are super efficient and make less harmful emissions. More people are working from home because of advances in communication technology and computer security. At last we have some grounds for optimism.

D. As she approached the traffic lights the driver in front of her tipped out a mess of fast food boxes, polystyrene cups and chip bags. She pressed her horn angrily. “Why don’t people consider what they do”, she wondered helplessly. “Someone will have to clear this up and we all have to pay for it.”

E. Sarah has worked for herself more than 10 years now. It had been risky but now her interior decoration business is a success. She loves being her own boss. It constantly amazes her that her friends in big corporations believe they have job security. How can they think this way when these companies are constantly firing people to make bigger profits?

F. It was not easy deciding. It never is when buying a new car. Reliability and comfort are big issues as are fuel economy, maintenance and so forth. A car has to feel right as well. Price and value for money are also critical. But in the end Ralph made his decision confident that it was just the right one for him.

Which of the following was NOT the reason why Polina didn’t want to move to

1) She was afraid of doing badly at school.

2) She didn’t want to part with her friends.

3) She was reluctant to change her lifestyle.

4) She was afraid of Texan climate.

Lost in the Heat

Polina didn’t want to move to America. At the age of 12, she was very set in her ways and did not welcome change. She had a group of friends whom she had known since nursery school and enjoyed hanging out with. She also could hardly speak any English, so she doubted she would be able to make any new friends.

Her father was selected to be a Russian representative for the International Space Station project to NASA. They were moving to Houston, Texas, for a year. First, she imagined Texas to be a desert with cowboys riding around on horses. When she found out that Houston was a big city, however, she imagined skyscrapers.

The reality turned out completely different.

Nobody actually lived in the city. It was surrounded by many suburbs, which were really just small towns. They lived in a suburb called Katy, in a neighborhood with houses that all looked the same as if stamped out by identical cookie-cutters.

She had really been afraid of the heat. On the big wall map they had in Moscow she had seen that Houston was the same latitude as Africa. But now she barely noticed it because of the blasting freezing air-conditioning everywhere: in the car, in every store, and at home. Every time she stepped outside, however, she was assaulted by the overpowering heat.

Her parents were off at work, so she found herself alone most of the time. She tried watching TV but couldn’t understand anything. She thought about chatting with her friends back in Moscow, but then remembered that it was the middle of the night on account of the time difference.

That was when she decided to go for a walk. She knew it would be scorchingly hot, but she felt suffocated sitting inside. So she lathered up with sunscreen, laced up her sneakers and went outside.

The full force of the heat was like a blazing furnace. But after a while she got used to it. She walked along the street, thinking about how strange it was here. In Moscow, everyone lived in apartment buildings with courtyards. In the summer, there would be lots of people out strolling, enjoying themselves. Here she didn’t see a single person. An occasional car passed by but that was it.

She kept walking aimlessly until she stumbled upon a highway. To her left, there was a field with cows. Beyond this small oasis of country life, other housing communities were visible in the distance, mirroring the one she lived in. Further down the highway was a small convenience store. She was thirsty so she walked there to get a drink.

When she opened the door, she felt frosty relief from the heat. The cashier looked up, smiled and said,

«How’re you doing? It sure is a scorcher today, ain’t it?»

Polina had no idea what he was talking about, so she just stared at him.

«What’s wrong, little darling, cat got your tongue?» he asked, but she just paid and left.

She didn’t notice which direction she was going and ended up in a neighborhood she assumed was hers. Everything looked familiar. It was only when she couldn’t find her house that she knew she was totally lost. She was sweating and feeling dizzy and when everything started going black, she remembered the cows. She should have looked for the field with cows to get back. That was her last thought.

When she woke up, she was lying in a hospital bed. Her mom and dad were there.

“What happened?” she inquired.

A nurse didn’t understand the language, but guessed her question.

«You’re lucky to be alive little lady, you had a heat stroke. Guess you know now why people don’t go on walks in the Texas heat!»

Troilus and Cressida clearly called for the most attention, but both students A32 ______ to find satirical nuances in almost every play by Shakespeare.

Ответ: managed

As the year was coming to an end, A33 ______ anyone doubted that either William or Philippa would win the prize while the other would come in second.

As the year was coming to an end, A33 ______ anyone doubted that either William or Philippa would win the prize while the other would come in second.

“I would be willing to believe that is the case,” Philippa A36 ______ William.

Ответ: told

“But A37 ______, when you discover who has won the Charles Oldham, you will know who was awarded less.”

“But A37 ______, when you discover who has won the Charles Oldham, you will know who was awarded less.”

turn over — переворачивать
turn on — включить (о свете)
turn out — оказываться
turn off — выключить (о свете)

It turned A38 ______ that the examiners felt unable on this occasion to award the prize to one person and had therefore decided that it should be shared by William and Philippa.

  • Would you like to be an actor? Why/Why not?
  • Do you prefer to watch videos or go to the cinema?
  • Do you ever read film reviews?

  1. Once again, Tom Granger shows in his latest film why audiences find him so amusing. Playing his usual character, the lovable loser Benny, Granger makes fun of doctors and hospitals in a hilarious film. Crazy situations and funny dialogues keep you grinning, and the car crash at the end had me crying for all the right reasons. A real hit!
    Kind of film:

  2. This film proves that you can’t make a great film just by giving a director a lot of money. The special effects and costumes are wonderful, but the story is about as frightening as a rabbit. Ghosts and graveyards may scare small children but most of us will yawn through this one. I, for one, was glad when the monster finally did get the girl. At least it saved us from her terrible acting.
    Kind of film:

  3. Director Sarah Howard, best known for her exciting chases and explosions, tries a new style in this complicated story of two people in New York whose lives are changed when they are both arrested. The film is full of suspense as they are passed from the police to the FBI and the CIA. Set in a world of spies and secrets, this film will leave you looking over your shoulder to see who’s following you.
    Kind of film:

  4. You’d better bring your tissues if you’re going to see the latest from Sam Goldberg. From the very beginning he plays with your emotions. Based on a true story, the film follows the heroine, Nadine, through her struggle with cancer and her developing relationship with the young doctor trying to save her. Goldberg lets us into their hearts as if we had known them all our lives.
    Kind of film:

Keys: 1. comedy, 2. horror, 3. thriller, 4. romance.

Read this review and circle the best heading for each paragraph.

The wrong title / A disappointing result / A good past record
The Good Guys Always Win is a missed opportunity. Starring John Devon and written by Carol West, all the ingredients were there for a great movie, but, alas, this one proves that the good guys sometimes lose. With their work together in the past, I was looking forward to seeing what they had been working on. The answer is a film that lets them down.

An old-fashioned story / A fight for love / A new acting style
The story is the same old plot of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. We’ve seen it a thousand times before. With women playing strong characters on our screens these days, we’ve had enough of the gentle heroine who just waits for the boy to fall in love with her. Patty LeBelle, who plays Wendy, cries and sighs but does little else, and those who saw her in Climbers will wonder what’s happened to her.

A terrible script / Poor leadership / Future possibilities
The dialogue is slow and too much of the film is people pausing and looking at each other. Donna Short, the director, must take most of the blame since it’s her job to guide the actors. It’s difficult to see exactly why she was given this film when her last two efforts. Catch Me, I’m Falling and The Man Next Door, were so unexciting. Let’s hope that John Devon’s career can recover.

  9. It all has to work

Lights, Camera, Action

  1. Making a film is such a complicated process that it’s a wonder any of them ever get made. When you go to your local cinema to see what’s on, do you ever think of all the separate steps that have to come together to end up with what you see on the big screen? Where does it start?
This is an important decision since the director is the person who will be in charge of the whole cast and crew. The producer will either find somebody who has made similar films in the past or he or she might take a chance on a new director. Most importantly, the producer wants someone he or she can trust to do a good job and to stay under budget.

  2. Most films start as an idea. It might be in a director’s mind, or in a writer’s mind, but wherever it comes from, it’s the producer who needs convincing. The producer is the businessman who finds the money to make the film. If you’ve got an idea for the next blockbuster, you need to find somebody who is willing to make your film. The producer will then organize the budget and decide how much it is worth spending on the film.

  3. The producer will decide who is going to be responsible for making the film: the director.

  4. The producer and director will then choose the other people to work on the film and will decide on the members of the cast. People feel very strongly about actors and a film has to have the right ones if it is to draw people into cinemas. Actors usually become associated with a particular kind of film in the mind of the public and it can be a risk to cast an actor in a different kind of role. Auditions and screen tests might be held to make final decisions and rehearsals will begin.

  5. While the actors are developing their characters, the director will be making other key decisions concerning things such as location. Where the film is shot is very important and the locations for filming will be chosen carefully. The film will also be storyboarded, with pictures of all the key moments. Special effects will be planned and costumes will be designed. This pre-production phase can take л long time because there may not be a chance to change things later.

  6. The actual shooting can take anywhere from a few weeks to a year, or possibly even more. The actors spend a lot of time waiting for everything to be right – the set, the lighting, the cameras – and boredom can be a real problem, life at the Oscars might seem wonderful, but life on a film set can be stressful and tedious.

  7. Once filming is over, post-production begins. This is the stage where all the elements of the film are brought together. The film is edited so that it tells a clear story and any special effects are perfected. Music is added to emphasise the excitement or the emotion of certain moments in the film. Often, the film is previewed to small audiences and changes are made, depending on their reactions. Finally, the film makes its wav into the cinemas.

  8. Once the process is over, what the backers will want to know is where the money has gone. We hear a lot these days about the huge fees commanded by stars, but the cast will typically cost around 10% of the total budget. Pre- and post-production costs will account for 50%, while the director and crew will take another 10%. This leaves around 30% of the total cost of the film to be spent on actual filming.

a The process is more important than the people who do it.
b The writer wants to emphasise how difficult it is.
  2. The most famous actors are paid more.
a We are not interested in who pays the money.
b The writer wants to emphasise that the actors are famous.
  3. Computers are used in the editing process.
a The writer wants to emphasise the computers rather than the people.
b We don’t know the name of the editor on this film.
  4. Mistakes are sometimes made during the filming of a scene.
a The writer doesn’t want to blame an innocent person.
b There are many different people who might make mistakes.
  5. When a film is released, cinemas decide whether to show it.
a It is not important who releases the film.

1. A good source of information

2. Increasing the accessibility

3. The revival of letter writing

4. A beautiful tradition lost

5. Making it quick and efficient

6. The victory of technology

7. As an art form

8. Writing material evolution

A. There is something pleasant about receiving a handwritten letter from a friend. It is also very enjoyable to write a letter — choosing the paper and envelope, writing with a favourite pen, and the satisfying closure of licking the envelope and putting on a stamp. Unfortunately, since the widespread use of email, not many people write and send letters any more. The history of letter writing, however, is very interesting.

B. Before the invention of the postal service, letters were delivered on foot by couriers. The ancient Greeks used athletic runners for that. Later, horses were used because they were faster and could be changed at various stations. The Romans developed this system into a postal service. The Latin word ‘positus’ meant carriers, and that is where the English word ‘post’ comes from.

C. The material of letter writing has changed over time. Originally, people wrote on clay tablets. Later the Egyptians started using papyrus, a plant that grows in the river. The English word ‘paper’ comes from this plant. In the West, paper was produced from animal skins. In medieval times, the Saxons used the bark of the beech tree, called bok. This is where the English word ‘book’ comes from.

D. Literacy has had a big effect on letter writing: if you can’t read you can’t write letters! Before the 15,h century letter writing was restricted to governments, the church, and the aristocracy. After the invention of the printing press that made books cheaper, literacy was greatly increased. Ordinary people started writing letters and it became the most popular and the only way of long distance communication until the invention of the telegraph in 1837.

E. Much of what we know of the lives of people long dead comes from personal letters. Certainly books have provided historical information about the Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, but much of what we know of daily life from these periods comes from letters. Modem biographers get most of their information about the famous people they are writing about from their correspondence.

F. In the 18th and 19th centuries, letter writing was considered an art and essential part of life. People wrote not only to keep in touch but also as a method of literary expression, as a work of art, and conformed to conventions of etiquette and form. Literary figures wrote letters knowing that they would be read in the future by historians, and one day might be published. There were even novels consisting of a series of letters, known as the epistolary novel.

G. Even after the telephone became a common fixture in homes, people continued to write letters. What killed the letter was the widespread use of email, and the development of texting and chatting on social media. This type of communication holds many advantages. You don’t need to worry about finding paper, envelopes, stamps, and going to the mailbox. It is also possible to get an instant reply.

1.  Thoughtless behaviour

2.  Benefits of private business

G. Jane studied the small print. To make a successful insurance claim for her accident she needed so much information. Several complicated forms took hours to complete. She then needed three independent quotations, a witness statement, and a police statement and after everything she still had to pay the first $500 anyway.

When you look at a coffee bean, it’s really hard to believe that such a small thing is so important for so many people. Coffee is the world’s second most traded thing. It is by all means one of the most popular drinks ever. Statistics says that the major part of the planet population drink coffee. Some prefer black coffee, that is coffee served without milk. Others like white coffee  — coffee with milk.

However, few people know enough about coffee beans. First of all, coffee beans are actually not beans. They are the pits of a fruit. In fact, coffee comes from coffee cherries and they are only called beans because they look a bit like other beans. Secondly, most of the world’s coffee comes from one country. Brazil is by far the largest producer of coffee in the world selling nearly a third of all the coffee drunk in the world.

The Model Millionaire

Unless one is wealthy there is no A22 use in being a charming fellow. Romance is the privilege of the rich, not the profession of the unemployed. The poor should be practical and prosaic. It is better to have a permanent A23 income than to be fascinating. These are the great truths of modern life which Hughie Erskine never realised. Poor Hughie! Intellectually, we must A24 admit, he was not of much importance. He never said a brilliant thing in his life. But then he was wonderfully good-looking, with his crisp brown hair, his clear-cut profile, and his grey eyes. He was as popular with men as he was with women, and he had every accomplishment except that of A25 earning his living.

A. While they know its wrong to do, and it should result in punishment for all involved, students occasionally throw their lunch at one another. You’ve seen it in films, and while it rarely happens in real life, it must happen from time to time, mustn’t it? It looks quite fun to do, although not so much fun for the school’s housekeeping staff who have to clean up the mess.

B. When fighting forest fires, firemen face some of the most dangerous conditions that any person could face. Temperatures soar to heights that the human body can’t handle, which is why firemen must wear heavy, flame-resistant clothing. Falling debris is a problem, too, as branches snap from the trees and fall to the ground, so helmets are essential to protect the head.

C. Many people suffer from allergies, which can be caused by a number of things. Probably the worst time of the year for sufferers is after winter has finished and temperatures begin to rise. Trees grow leaves, flowers bloom, and all of this places particles in the air that get up our noses and cause us to itch, sneeze, cough and get watery eyes.

D. How many personality types are there? Some say there are up to nine, but surely there are more than that. One personality type describes people who are always cautious. These people are careful to stay out of danger and they avoid risk at all costs. They might seem rather conservative, but these people have an important function. They’re the ones that are going to keep us safe above all.

E. Health professionals and nutritionists have recently discovered that wheat can actually cause an allergic reaction in some people. It’s a shame, really, because this means that these people have to avoid eating bread, pasta, cakes and many other basic staples. Eating these foods can cause coughing, clogged nasal passages and even skin rashes. Luckily, there are medications that can lessen the effects of wheat allergies.

F. When April and May come round, some schools prepare a special occasion where students can relax and have a good time. Students dress up in nice outfits, meet in the school hall and enjoy listening to music from a DJ or a local band. It’s an opportunity for them to show off their moves on the floor and really let loose.

G. Some people have a personality type that pushes them to task risks. They’re the type of people who take great pleasure in doing dangerous things, such as bungee jumping, rock climbing or racing cars. Playing it safe is just not in their nature, so while they enjoy the greatest thrills in life, they sometimes get themselves in a bit of trouble.

My company

We A32 ______ in transporting goods by road.

  • concentrated
  • focused
  • specialized
  • devoted

By the time we became Cooper & Son in 1967, the company had A33 ______ in obtaining seventeen big trucks and delivered goods all over the north of England.

  • achieved
  • succeeded
  • managed
  • fulfilled

Ответ: succeeded

“I’ll teach you more about the real world in a month than you’d learn from any of those university types in a lifetime,” he A34 ______ to say.

  • kept
  • held
  • used
  • took

Ответ: used

I followed his advice and never A35 ______ it.

  • dissatisfied
  • disappointed
  • displeased
  • regretted

He taught me how to take the company’s trucks A36 ______ and, more important, how to put them back together again.

  • away
  • apart
  • along
  • among

He taught me how to take the company’s trucks A36 ______ and, more important, how to put them back together again.

Then I began to set in motion some ideas I’d been working on for the past decade, A37 ______ I knew my father didn’t approve of them.

  • although
  • moreover
  • however
  • therefore

Нам предложили один союз — although и 3 вводных слова: moreover, however, therefore.

I never A28 ______ him, but Europe was only the beginning of my plans for the company’s expansion.

  • spoke
  • said
  • told
  • talked
