Keeping a written record of your thoughts, feelings and the events of your daily life has long been believed to improve your psychological well-being, and there’s a growing body of research suggesting that it can also benefit your physical health as well. 

«Journaling is a meditative exercise that can help you sort out your emotions and prioritize pieces in your life,» says Melissa Divaris Thompson, a licensed holistic psychotherapist. «It can reduce anxiety and


depression

and also help you understand yourself on a deeper level.»

Carla Marie Manly, PhD, a clinical psychologist and wellness expert, says there are several mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health benefits that can come from journaling, depending on the intention behind it. 

For example, she notes that gratitude journaling may offer a boost in mood, self-compassion, and appreciation for life in general, whereas grief journaling may help with processing anger, sadness, and disbelief while moving toward acceptance.

Here’s what you need to know about the health benefits of journaling and how to make it a habit. 

1. Reduces stress

Research suggests that journaling is an excellent stress management tool — in fact, a small 2018 study revealed that emotion-focused journaling was associated with both decreased mental distress and increased well-being.

«Once reduced to writing, stressors can often be better understood and appreciated,» says Manly. «After venting, the person can then view the stressors in a more detached, objective fashion. This can lead to the creation of better stress management and coping techniques.»

2. Calms anxiety 

A small 2018 study found that when adults — who were experiencing elevated anxiety symptoms — journaled about traumatic experiences for 15-20 minute intervals, they experienced decreased anxiety, fewer depressive symptoms, and less overall mental distress, as well as increased well-being, in just one month.

«When we journal, we can often unravel the hidden fears that lead to intermittent or chronic anxiety,» says Manly. «Certain types of journaling can also include learning to notice anxiety-inducing triggers.»

3. Relieves depression 

A 2013 study revealed that when people with major depressive disorder wrote about their deepest thoughts and feelings surrounding an emotional event for 20 minutes a day for three days, they showed a significant decrease in their depression scores.

«When a journal is dedicated to allowing for sad or angry thoughts, the thoughts are more likely to be processed rather than remain stuck inside,» Manly says. 

4. Improves memory 

Research suggests that by allowing you to cope more effectively with stress, journaling can also free up your cognitive resources for other important mental processes.

For example, a small 2001 study of students found that writing about their deepest thoughts and feelings about going to college improved their short-term memory, which was associated with higher GPAs both immediately after the experiment and in the following semester.

5. Strengthens the immune system

Manly says that journaling can be a relaxing exercise that decreases the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline — which is noteworthy, given that overproduction of these hormones can suppress your immune system.

This may help explain why research has demonstrated a link between journaling and improved immune response in a small study of 2004 HIV patients, whose lymphocyte counts increased after the intervention of «emotional writing» or journaling. 

6. Increases optimism 

According to a 2003 study, maintaining a weekly journal specifically dedicated to gratitude was associated with greater improvements in overall optimism.

«By having a journal devoted to appreciating the positive elements of life, the focus is taken off of what is not going right in favor of the blessings in one’s life,» says Manly.

7. Helps to cope with trauma

Studies indicate that journaling may be an effective therapeutic tool for survivors of trauma.

One small 2008 study revealed that people with post-traumatic stress disorder who participated in expressive writing activities experienced significant improvements in their mood, and reductions in stress hormone responses when dealing with traumatic memories.

Are there any cons to journaling? 

The goal of journaling is generally catharsis and healing. But if it leads to any negative thought spiraling or increased depression, Manly highly recommends taking a step back and seeking the support of a therapist.

Manly also tells Insider that if your journaling is focused purely on negative thoughts or events, you may become stuck in unproductive or destructive thought cycles that can worsen certain issues. 

For example, a small 2013 study of recently divorced people revealed that when participants journaled about their deepest feelings and thoughts for 20 minutes a day, they made far less progress in dealing with their emotions than those participants who just wrote about their daily activities.

How to journal effectively 

Since you may be disclosing highly sensitive information in your journal, experts agree that it’s crucial to have a secure space to store it so that you’re free to be emotionally honest without fear of judgment.

Thompson also advises designating a specific place for journaling — ideally one that’s quiet — where you can think and reflect regularly.

Here are a few of Manly’s top tips for journaling:

  • Prioritize convenience: The most important thing is that your journal is easy to access — otherwise, you may not be likely to stick with your practice. So, whether you prefer typing on your computer or writing in a notebook, Manly says it’s important to find what works best for you. 
  • Set aside a specific time: Manly says having a set time for this practice in your schedule — such as first thing in the morning or right after your workday ends — can make it easier to form a habit around journaling. However, she advises against journaling about anything triggering for several hours before bedtime, as your psyche needs time to process thoughts and feelings to promote better sleep.
  • Don’t self-edit: According to Manly, journaling is not about perfection, it’s about feeling free to write without stressing about grammar. Resist the urge to look back at what you wrote while you’re journaling, and treat it as more of a stream-of-consciousness writing exercise.
  • Experiment with different forms of expression: Journaling is all about having a free-flowing space to release whatever’s on your mind, so Manly says you should feel free to sketch images, use colored pencils to highlight feelings or thoughts, or find other ways to express yourself beyond just traditional writing.

Insider’s takeaway

According to experts, the best way to reap the benefits of journaling is to engage in it consistently — at least two to three days per week if a daily practice is not realistic.

Over time, you may find that journaling leads you to greater personal insights about your current relationships, problems, stressors, and coping mechanisms.

«Many people find that they are able to unconsciously sort out problems as a result of journaling,» Manly says. «Even after the journaling is completed, the mind still works behind the scenes. As a result, minutes, hours, or days after the journaling took place, an epiphany may result.»

If journaling ever starts to make you feel worse, experts advise shifting gears by focusing your writing on more positive topics — such as what you’re proud of, what’s going well in your life, and what you’re grateful for.

There’s a good reason we turned to our diaries to help us to cope with teenage angst – research has found that expressing emotions through journaling helps many to relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety and more.

In our current era of constant distraction, endless to-do lists, and limitless options, the ability to remain focused and calm is something that has to be actively worked on. Fortunately, there’s an excellent tool for mental health that most of us already grew up using and still have access to; journaling.

Although we tend to stop journaling once we’ve moved past our teenage angst, this form of writing therapy is just as necessary for mental health as we navigate through the ups and downs of adulthood.

Our thoughts run at a mile a minute – when we write, however, our thought process is slowed down. Journaling forces us to take the time and identify our fears, isolate our problems, and pinpoint negative patterns as well as triggers. What Happens To Our Brains When We Journal?

According to Maul Purcell, a psychotherapist and journaling expert, pen-and-paper writing activates the reticular activating system region (RAS) of the brain, which helps the brain to filter and focus on information. [8]

This is not only helpful for improving clarity, but it is also useful for writing down goals or aspirations. The RAS registers goals as important and then identifies relevant opportunities that can help bring you closer to them. The more detailed the goal, the greater the likelihood of achieving them. [9] [10]

Purcell also suggests that journaling can allow creativity to flourish. As told to Fast Company,  “writing accesses the left hemisphere of the brain, which is analytical and rational. While your left brain is occupied, your right brain (the more creative side) is free to do what it does best, i.e. create, intuit and feel. In this way, writing removes mental blocks and allows us to use more of our brainpower to better understand ourselves and the world around us.”

Journaling via an online blog or through an app can be just as helpful. This carries similar benefits to traditional journaling by triggering a dopamine release, a chemical that helps regulate emotional responses and improve mood. How To Keep A Journal

Journaling can take one of two main forms: free form, or more directed and structured. Although the latter is more often used by mental health practitioners to help their clients, elements from this approach can be taken and incorporated into anyone’s journaling practice.

Consider these guidelines from the Center for Journal Therapy: use the acronym WRITE [12]

  • W – what do you want to write about? Describe your feelings, thoughts and what’s happening in your life right now
  • R – reflect on it and take a few minutes to be still; you could do a few minutes of mindful meditation at this point to clarify how you feel
  • I -– investigate your emotions through writing and keep digging deeper to analyze it from all sides
  • T – time yourself to make sure that you write for at least five minutes about the particular topic or problem, to ensure you’re covering it thoroughly
  • E – exit with introspection; read what you have written and them sum up the key takeaway in a few sentences. For example, “As I read this I am aware that…” followed by a few action items or steps you would like to take next.  (Adams, n.d.).

If you don’t know what to write in a journal or find it difficult to get started, below are some journaling prompts that can help:

    • Keep a gratitude journal – simply write about people or aspects of your life that you’re grateful for. Topics could be as simple as gratitude for a loving partner or cuddles with your cat. Gratitude journaling has been shown to have extensive benefits such as making you friendlier and more open, increasing optimism, helping you make progress towards your goals, reducing physical pain and encouraging exercise.

    • Self analysis – see this as an opportunity to learn more about yourself, instead of negative self-talk and criticism. Ask yourself questions such as, ‘why did I act a certain way?’, ‘what matters to me?’ or ‘what did I do right or wrong’ to improve self-awareness, figure out what’s holding you back and plan out your next steps.
    • Describe experiences – simply describe your day or an event that occurred; you may be surprised to find that along the way you have a lot more to say than you originally thought.
    • Get to the root of anxieties – write down all your anxieties to help put them in perspective. Often when we write them all down, we realize we’ve blown them out of proportion and most of them are irrational. For ones that are rational, put steps in place that can help counteract and soothe them.
    • Keep a log of your successes – this is handy to come back to when you’re feeling down on yourself and need a positive boost.
    • Pick a theme – journaling doesn’t have to just be about you, you can pick a topic that you love to write about like nature, sports, books, art, travel, music and more.

Tips For Make Journaling A Regular Practice

Similar to meditation, journaling is most effective if it’s done on a regular basis. To ensure that this actually happens, below are some of our top tips:

  • Make it simple – keep your journal on your bedside table as a reminder, or open up a note on your phone if that’s easier.
  • Make it a part of your morning or bedtime routine (or both) – this is an ideal time since there are little disturbances or tasks in the way. The morning is helpful for setting the right tone and intentions for the day, and the evening is a good time for reflection and winding down.
  • View it as ‘me time’ – grab a cup of tea, light a candle, put on some soothing music… Do what you need to do to look forward to journaling every day.
  • Don’t overthink it – write whatever feels right at that point in time. While structure and prompts are helpful, let the words flow freely without worrying about structure, or how it makes you sound (no one else will be reading it anyway!).
  • Take it slow – give yourself time to write as little or as much as you want that day, and make sure you leave enough time to sit with it and reflect afterwards.
  • Write in a private space – make sure you’re sitting in a quiet spot at home without distractions.

When it comes to keeping a journal, stereotypes of Sweet Valley High and Napoleon Dynamite quickly come to mind; «Dear diary» is reserved for the high-school sweetheart or awkward recluse. Others see writing merely as a tool, a pragmatic means to an end, certainly without value in and of itself.

1. Stretching Your IQ
A hot topic, but strong cases support the ability to change your IQ. A report by the University of Victoria noted that «Writing as part of language learning has a positive correlation with intelligence.»

Journaling is an exploration of language, you’ll have the natural urge to search for new words and increase your vocabulary. The report goes on to say, «One of the best single measures of overall intelligence as measured by intelligence tests is vocabulary.»

2. Evoking Mindfulness
It’s the buzz word for good reason. There’s a strong connection between happiness and mindfulness. Journaling brings you into that state of mindfulness; past frustrations and future anxieties lose their edge in the present moment. She recommends three pages, done first thing in the morning. Including even one page as part of your journaling will get your creative juices flowing.

Journaling about a positive experience allows your brain to relive it. And reaffirms your abilities when the ugly head of self-doubt appears. The release of endorphins and dopamine will boost your self-esteem and mood. These reflections can become a catalog of personal achievements that you continue to go back to.

As you work to incorporate journaling into your life, remember the elephant is best eaten one bite at a time. Patience and consistency are crucial in forming new habits. Begin writing perhaps three days a week, first thing in the morning or before sleeping.

Journaling is a reflective process that enables writers to take control of their thoughts and emotions. In a classroom, the most obvious use for journals is as a writing strategy, but that is not all. Research has shown that encouraging students to maintain journals can be beneficial as it can:

Inspire Students

Journal writing can inspire students. Teachers can create writing prompts out of motivational quotes, inspirational people, and historical events. Students can be encouraged to maintain success journals (documenting their successful moments) or gratitude journals (mentioning all that students are thankful for). This way, teachers can help students focus on their positive experiences and use them to overcome their difficulties.

Build Confident Students:

With journal writing, students gain confidence in their writing skills as the strategy:

  • Provides struggling writers with ample opportunities to practice their writing skills.
  • Gives students the freedom to choose and maintain their style of journals, encouraging free flow of ideas and thought.

A. City centre parking is expensive and many important roads are now closed to private transport. This would be fine  — if public transport was cheap and convenient, but it is neither. The result is that people are avoiding the city centre so restaurants, cinemas and shops are closing.

A. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.

B. The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause. Some geologists suggest that a large meteor hitting the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all over the world. This idea is fascinating but it would mean the dinosaurs would all have died within a very short time.

C. In 1948, a British farmer discovered an interesting lump of metal while ploughing his field. At first he thought the metal bits were parts of an old bed. Then more ‘parts of old beds’ turned up and the farmer took them to the local museum. ‘But these bits are priceless!’ exclaimed the keeper of the museum. ‘They are Iron Age jewellery and coins!’ Over the next 40 years, more and more items were found in the same field.

D. Rats may have had a bit of a hard time over the years but these days lots of people are forgetting about guinea-pigs and hamsters and are buying rats instead. Domestic rats aren’t the same as the ones that run around rubbish bins — they’re actually quite cute. They are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They come in different colours and — a big bonus — they will eat anything!

In Western cultures, people look each other in the eye during a conversation to show interest and trust, but in many Asian countries, it’s rude to look people in the eye, especially a superior such as a teacher. One of the most basic and powerful signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others.

F. Earthquakes happen all the time in all parts of the world but we don’t notice most of them because they are small. However, big earthquakes are really dangerous. They can make buildings fall down, set off landslides and do other deadly things. The highest death toll caused by an earthquake was in China in 1556, when at least 830,000 people died.

G. According to scientists, Americans watch more TV on average than any other nationality. In fact, many people, particularly children, sit for 35 hours or more per week glued to the box. What’s wrong with watching all that TV? Studies have linked it to everything from obesity to aggression in children not to mention that it puts your mind into a sort of sedated state. Habitual television watching, over long periods of time, has been known to cause depression, and anger.

‘Have you written a letter to the Froplinsons?’ asked Egbert.

Besides, I don’t know what it was that the Froplinsons sent us.’ ‘A William the Conqueror calendar,’ said Janetta, ‘with a quotation of one of his great thoughts for every day in the year.’

‘Impossible,’ said Egbert; ‘he didn’t have three hundred and sixty-five thoughts in the whole of his life, or, if he did, he kept them to himself.’

‘Well, it was William Wordsworth, then,’ said Janetta; ‘I know William came into it somewhere.’

‘That sounds more probable,’ said Egbert; ‘well, let’s collaborate on this letter and get it done. I’ll dictate, and you can scribble it down. ‘Dear Mrs. Froplinson, thank you and your husband so much for the very pretty calendar you sent us. It was very good of you to think of us.’ ’

‘You can’t possibly say that,’ said Janetta, laying down her pen. ‘We sent them something on the twenty-second,’ said Janetta, ‘so they simply had to think of us. There was no getting away from it.’

‘What did we send them?’ asked Egbert gloomily.

‘Bridge-markers,’ said Janetta, ‘in a cardboard case, with some inanity about ‘digging for fortune with a royal spade’ emblazoned on the cover. The moment I saw it in the shop I said to myself ‘Froplinsons’ and to the attendant ‘How much?’ When he said ‘Ninepence,’ I gave him their address, jabbed our card in, paid tenpence or elevenpence to cover the postage, and thanked heaven. With less sincerity and infinitely more trouble they eventually thanked me.’

‘The Froplinsons don’t play bridge,’ said Egbert.

‘One is not supposed to notice social deformities of that sort,’ said Janetta; ‘it wouldn’t be polite. Besides, what trouble did they take to find out whether we read Wordsworth with gladness? For all they knew or cared we might be frantically embedded in the belief that all poetry begins and ends with John Masefield, and it might infuriate or depress us to have a daily sample of Wordsworthian products flung at us.’

‘Well, let’s get on with the letter,’ said Egbert. ‘How clever of you to guess that Wordsworth is our favourite poet.’

Again Janetta laid down her pen.

‘Do you realise what that means?’ she asked; ‘a Wordsworth booklet next Christmas, and another calendar the Christmas after, with the same problem of having to write suitable letters of thankfulness. No, the best thing to do is to drop all further allusion to the calendar and switch off on to some other topic.’

‘But what other topic?’

‘Oh, something like this: ‘What do you think of the New Year Honours List? A friend of ours made such a clever remark when he read it.’ Then you can stick in any remark that comes into your head; it needn’t be clever. The Froplinsons won’t know whether it is or isn’t.’

‘We don’t even know on which side they are in politics,’ objected Egbert; ‘and anyhow you can’t suddenly dismiss the subject of the calendar. Surely there must be some intelligent remark that can be made about it.’

‘Well, we can’t think of one,’ said Janetta wearily; ‘the fact is, we’ve both written ourselves out.’

There was a long silence, the forlorn silence of those who are bereft of hope and have almost ceased to care. Then Egbert started from his seat with an air of resolution. The light of battle was in his eyes.

‘Let me come to the writing-table,’ he exclaimed; ‘I’m going to write to the editor of every enlightened and influential newspaper in the Kingdom, I’m going to suggest that there should be a sort of epistolary Truce of God during the festivities of Christmas and New Year. From the twenty-fourth of December to the third or fourth of January it shall be considered an offence against good sense and good feeling to write or expect any letter or communication that does not deal with the necessary events of the moment. Answers to invitations, arrangements about trains, renewal of club subscriptions, and, of course, all the ordinary everyday affairs of business, sickness, engaging new cooks, and so forth, these will be dealt with in the usual manner as something inevitable. But all the devastating accretions of correspondence, incident to the festive season, these should be swept away to give the season a chance of being really festive.’

‘But you would have to make some acknowledgment of presents received,’ objected Janetta; ‘otherwise people would never know whether they had arrived safely.’

‘Of course, I have thought of that,’ said Egbert; ‘every present that was sent off would be accompanied by a ticket bearing the date of dispatch and the signature of the sender, and some conventional hieroglyphic to show that it was intended to be a Christmas or New Year gift; there would be a counterfoil with space for the recipient’s name and the date of arrival, and all you would have to do would be to sign and date the counterfoil, add a conventional hieroglyphic indicating heartfelt thanks and gratified surprise, put the thing into an envelope and post it.’

‘It sounds delightfully simple,’ said Janetta wistfully, ‘but people would consider it too perfunctory.’

‘It is not a bit more perfunctory than the present system,’ said Egbert; ‘I have only the same conventional language of gratitude at my disposal with which to thank dear old Colonel Chuttle for his perfectly delicious Stilton, which we shall devour to the last morsel, and the Froplinsons for their calendar, which we shall never look at. So you see the present system of acknowledgment is just as perfunctory and conventional as the counterfoil business would be, only ten times more tiresome and brain-racking.’

‘Your plan would certainly bring the idea of a Happy Christmas a step nearer realisation,’ said Janetta. ‘Meanwhile, what am I to say to the Froplinsons?’
