childhood memories егэ

Whenever I questioned my mother about his death, she didn’t A32 _______ any more than that he had been killed fighting on the Western Front only days before the peace treaty with Germany was signed.

  • speak
  • talk
  • say
  • tell

Там стоят any more than, что говорит о том, что сюда подходит say: not say any more than – ни сказать больше чем.

Grandma said my dad had been a brave man, and once when we were A33 _______ in the house she showed me his medals.

  • only
  • alone
  • lonely
  • single

only только; в сочетание с the: the only — единственный

Grandma said my dad had been a brave man, and once when we were A33 _______ in the house she showed me his medals.

My grandpa rarely A34 _______ an opinion on anything.

  • proposed
  • invited
  • requested
  • offered

Существительное an opinion сочетается с глаголом offer: offer an opinion on smth – выражать мнение по поводу чего-то

Ответ: offered

The only man I can A35 _______ was my uncle Stan who used to sit at the top of the table at breakfast time.

  • remind
  • recover
  • remember
  • repeat

The only man I can A35 _______ was my uncle Stan who used to sit at the top of the table at breakfast time.

When he left in the morning, I A36 _______ to follow him to the city docks where he worked.

  • kept
  • used
  • held
  • made

Ответ: used

Once the holds had been emptied, the dockers would load them with salt, tin, A37 _______ coal, before they set off again.

  • even
  • still
  • yet
  • just

even – даже
still – все еще

Once the holds had been emptied, the dockers would load them with salt, tin, A37 _______ coal, before they set off again.

Ответ: even

I always wanted to help my uncle Stan unload A38 _______ ship had docked that morning but he just laughed, saying “All in good time, my lad.” It couldn’t be soon enough for me.

  • whenever
  • whoever
  • whatever
  • wherever

I always wanted to help my uncle Stan unload A38 _______ ship had docked that morning but he just laughed, saying “All in good time, my lad.” It couldn’t be soon enough for me.

1. The Best Way of Learning
2. Key Factor in Learning
3. Linguistic Interference
4. Universal Language

5. Online Learning
6. Language Extinction
7. Learning by Imitation
8. Sign Language

A. Young children have a genetic ability to learn language. They come into the world as eager learning machines, and language acquisition is a major aspect of this learning. How children actually learn language is not entirely clear, however. Most linguists believe that they do it primarily by listening to and trying to communicate with adult speakers. Initially, this means that they copy the way adults use words and grammar.

B. Learning a second or third language is easier in early childhood than later. It is particularly important to learn correct pronunciation as young as possible. At any age, learning by constant contact with native speakers in their own society is the quickest and the most effective method. It is superior to taking foreign language classes because it forces you to concentrate on it all of the time.

C. Learning a second language can be affected by the patterns of the first language. There can be some blending of phonemes. For instance, most Americans who learn French in high school or college pronounce French words with a distinctive American accent. Grammar can also be affected. English speakers who learn both French and Spanish sometimes combine grammatical rules of both when speaking either of them.

D. Until just a few years ago, language study was limited to the classroom or personal tutor, or home study by book. In the last few decades technology has given us a much needed audio option — first vinyl records, then cassettes and CDs. Now technology has given us a new format — the Internet. Options to learn a language by Internet are still limited but the potential is not.

E. What is important when learning a language? If you have the desire and persistence, time is the only factor that you may have to work with. How much time you can devote to learning will play a role in how quickly you can learn the language. Just remember how exciting it will be and how rewarding you will feel at the accomplishment.

F. Rather than have businessmen, diplomats, scientists and tourists from every country learning all the major languages that they want to learn or need to learn, Esperantists would have everyone just learn one second language — Esperanto. Then everyone could communicate with everyone, everywhere. The major ‘national’ languages could keep their special characteristics for anyone who wanted to learn them. This is the essence of the ‘Esperanto Movement’.

G. More than half of the world’s 7,000 languages are expected to die out by the end of the century, often taking with them irreplaceable knowledge about the natural world. When a species dies out, sometimes fossils can be found, remains uncovered. But when a human language disappears, there’s rarely any key left behind. Each loss becomes a linguistic black hole, where an entire way of knowing the world disappears.

That summer an army of crickets started a war with my father. They picked a fight the minute they invaded our cellar. Dad didn’t care for bugs much more than Mamma, but he could tolerate a few spiders and assorted creepy crawlers living in the basement. Every farm house had them. A part of rustic living, and something you needed to put up with if you wanted the simple life.

He told Mamma: ‘Now that we’re living out here, you can’t be jerking your head and swallowing your gum over what’s plain natural, Ellen.’ But she was a city girl through and through and had no ears when it came to defending vermin. She said a cricket was just a noisy cockroach, just a dumb horny bug that wouldn’t shut up. No way could she sleep with all that chirping going on! Then to prove her point she wouldn’t go to bed. She drank coffee and smoked my father’s cigarettes and she paced between the couch and the TV. Next morning she threatened to pack up and leave, so Dad drove to the hardware store and hurried back. He squirted poison from a jug with a spray nozzle. He sprayed the basement and all around the foundation of the house. When he had finished, he told us that was the end of it.

But what he should have said was: ‘This is the beginning’. For the next fourteen days Mamma kept finding dead crickets in the clean laundry. She’d shake out a towel or a sheet and a dead black cricket would roll across the linoleum. Sometimes the cat would corner one, and swat it around like he was playing hockey, then carry it away in his mouth. Dad said swallowing a few dead crickets wouldn’t hurt as long as the cat didn’t eat too many.

Soon live crickets started showing up in the kitchen and bathroom. Mamma freaked because she thought they were the dead crickets come back to haunt, but Dad said they were definitely a new batch, probably coming up on the pipes. He fetched his jug of poison and sprayed beneath the sink and behind the toilet and all along the baseboard until the whole house smelled of poison, and then he sprayed the cellar again, and then he went outside and sprayed all around the foundation leaving a foot-wide moat of poison.

For a couple of weeks we went back to finding dead crickets in the laundry. Dad told us to keep a sharp look out. He suggested that we’d all be better off to hide as many as we could from Mamma. I fed a few dozen to the cat who I didn’t like because he scratched and bit for no reason. I hoped the poison might kill him so we could get a puppy. Once in a while we found a dead cricket in the bathroom or beneath the kitchen sink. A couple of weeks later, when both live and dead crickets kept turning up, Dad emptied the cellar of junk. He borrowed Uncle Burt’s pickup and hauled a load to the dump. Then he burned a lot of bundled newspapers and magazines which he said the crickets had turned into nests.

He stood over that fire with a rake in one hand and a garden hose in the other. He wouldn’t leave it even when Mamma sent me out to fetch him for supper. He wouldn’t leave the fire, and she wouldn’t put supper on the table. Both my brothers were crying. Finally she went out and got him herself. And while we ate, the wind lifted some embers onto the wood pile. The only gasoline was in the lawn mower fuel tank but that was enough to create an explosion big enough to reach the house. Once the roof caught, there wasn’t much anyone could do.

After the fire trucks left, I made the mistake of volunteering to stay behind while Mamma took the others to Aunt Gail’s. I helped Dad and Uncle Burt and two men I’d never seen before carry things out of the house and stack them by the road. In the morning we’d come back in Burt’s truck and haul everything away. We worked into the night and we didn’t talk much, hardly a word about anything that mattered, and Dad didn’t offer any plan that he might have for us now. Uncle Burt passed a bottle around, but I shook my head when it came to me. I kicked and picked through the mess, dumb struck at how little there was to salvage, while all around the roar of crickets magnified our silence.

1. Suspense and mystery keep readers entertained to the end.
2. A sweet tale of romance can warm the reader’s heart.
3. Some of the best stories are told through pictures, rather than words.
4. Some stories describe technological advancements yet to be seen.
5. Our behaviour can be improved by looking back in time.
6. Reality is sometimes more entertaining than fantasy.
7. Reading about another person’s life can bring meaning to our own.

ответ

A – 6
B – 5
C – 1
D – 7
E – 4
F – 2

Speaker A: They say that some of the strangest stories you’ll ever encounter are about events that happened in real life. When we read about something unbelievable, but then find out its true, our shock and bewilderment are even greater, and I think we enjoy this feeling. This can be the case with amazing tales of human survival, or a rags-to-riches story. It also applies to geological events, or the objects astronomers have found in space.

Speaker В: Historical conflicts are a terrible thing, but there are lessons to be learned from reading about them. We can see the mistakes that mankind made so many years ago, and we can use them as an example of what not to do now. It’s hard to believe that some of the mistakes in the past get repeated, but people have short memories. That’s why it’s important to study these periodsу so we make better decisions today.

Speaker С: Have you ever read a book that was so compelling, you couldn’t put it down? Л real page-turner, in which you sit reading for hours and ignore everything else? Even hunger and thirst cant tear you away from the story This is what a really well-written murder mystery is like. You want to know who killed off the leading character and you can’t turn the pages fast enough to find out!

Speaker D: We all try to achieve greatness in our lives in our very own way. It may seem as though the things we do are trivial and meaningless at times, but as the great Mahatma Gandhi once said, even the most insignificant things we do are important for our lives. Reading about great people such as him allows us to understand our own existence. It helps us realise that even the small things we do are to be cherished.

Speaker E: A good writer has to be imaginative, especially when writing science fiction. If the writer succeeds, they may invent an idea that actually becomes reality. Take headphones, for example. Before they were invented, they were the stuff of novels. No one could picture a tiny speaker small enough to fit inside your ear. Now it seems everyone’s got a pair. Who knows what’s in today’s novels that will become a reality later on?

Speaker F: A good book can take us away to another world that we sometimes wish were a reality. Let’s face it, life is rarely quite as exciting as what you can read in the pages of a novel. This is true of our expectations in life and our most tender emotions. A story about love can actually help us to understand our own feelings for the people we care about especially when our daily routines make life a bit dull.

(3 – Not stated).

D) Margie had a coke earlier in the day.
E) Neither Gareth nor Margie enjoy drinking coffee.

G) Gareth doesn’t like the English lit teacher.

Margie: Hey Gareth, you look a bit tired. Is everything OK?

Gareth: I didn’t sleep well last night because of the storm. It was so windy and there’s an old tree near my bedroom. The wind was causing the tree branches to bang against the window.

Margie: Oh, that’s terrible. I heard the storm before I fell asleep, but I was able to block out he noise. And once I’m asleep, it’s hard to wake me up.

Gareth: I had so much trouble falling asleep. Eventually I did, around I am. Then I woke up again in the middle of the night. It was awful! The branches were still banging on the window. My dad said he would get someone to cut those branches off. Our neighbour could probably do it. Anyway, I guess I’ll sleep well tonight!

Margie: Yeah, take it easy today. I hope you don’t have a lot to do.

Gareth: I’ve got football practice after school. I hope I don’t collapse on the field! Maybe it’ll make me feel better to run and get some exercise. But really, I’d rather just go back to bed!

Margie: Why don’t you have a coke? Maybe the caffeine will help you wake up. I would suggest coffee, but I hate the taste of it.

Gareth: Actually I’ve had a coke already for that reason. It helped a little bit, but not as much as I’d hoped. I don’t drink too many of those because they contain a lot of sugar. I’m with you about the coffee. I don’t like it either.

Margie: I hope you’re able to get through your classes today. I know if I’m very tired, it’s hard to pay attention to lessons. That’s especially true in maths. It takes all your brain power to learn numbers.

Gareth: I’m pretty good with maths. Actually I enjoy it quite a bit. That might help keep me alert. I’m not a huge fan of English lit. It’s not that I don’t like the subject, but the lessons are sometimes a bit long-winded, and I get bored.

Margie: I know what you mean. Mr Davis seems very passionate about the subject, though.

Gareth: Oh yes, Mr Davis is a great guy, I just wish the classes were a little more interactive.

Margie: I hope you make it through the day OK.

Gareth: Thanks, Margie. See you later!

Presenter: Hi and welcome to our programme, Time for Fun. With us today is Lori French, who works at a zorbing park just outside town. Thanks for joining us, Lori.

Speaker: Thanks for having me!

Presenter: Explain to our listeners what zorbing is.

Speaker: Well, zorbing involves riding inside a gigantic ball. In fact, it’s almost as wide as a car. It’s made of a flexible plastic material, and there’s an inside compartment where a person or two people sit, which is attached to the outer ball. Between the inside and the outside is empty space. This allows the ball to roll or bounce safely over the ground.

Presenter: So it’s a big ball inside an even bigger one, is it?

Speaker: That’s right. Once you’re inside the ball, you roll down a hill – not a steep one, of course. And because it’s soft and bouncy inside the ball, you don’t get hurt. At our zorbing park, we have a hill with a slight incline, with wooden railings on the left and right sides of the zorbing path to keep the ball on track. The ball rolls slowly down the hill at first. It picks up speed as it rolls, but it’s only a few metres to the bottom, so it never goes too fast.

Presenter: That sounds like a lot of fun. I take it you’ve tried it yourself, have you?

Speaker: Oh, yes. All the personnel at the park have to try it at least once as part of our training. It’s quite addictive, so once is never enough! It’s like a roller coaster ride, you know. It’s a lot of fun, but you have to like those sorts of things. It’s not for those with a weak stomach! We inform people what it’s like before they try it. We don’t want anyone getting sick.

Presenter: I love roller coaster rides, so I imagine I would like this.

Speaker: Oh, you should give it a try! Our zorb balls have got seats fitted inside with straps that keep you steady in the ball. A typical zorb run lasts about a minute, so it spins you round about a dozen times. And with our specially designed path, you needn’t worry your zorb balls going to roll away and land on a motorway somewhere!

Presenter: Well that’s good! Where can people find your zorbing park?

Speaker: Its about 20 kilometres outside of town, in Kings Forest. It’s a beautiful location surrounded by lush nature, and we’ve got a park area nearby for picnics. Of course, we suggest eating after your zorb run!

Presenter: Yes, that sounds wise! Is there a more challenging hill for experienced zorbers?

Speaker: Actually, no. We’ve got two zorbing paths on the same hill. What we do offer is a type of zorbing ball that doesn’t have seats, but inside, it’s been filled with a small amount of water. As the ball rolls, the rider slips about inside without spinning round. It’s more like being on a water slide.

Presenter: Are there other activities to do at your zorbing park?

Speaker: As I said, there’s a picnic area. We also have a camping area, so you can camp out for a few days, but barbecues are not permitted. There are lots of nature trails in the forest and there’s a river nearby. You could even do some swimming in the summer months if you like…

languages, but no one has ever made a more definite count.

Nowadays, globalization influences the (3)

Speaker A. Nowadays more and more companies show their products on the Internet. So, if there’s anything I need I can see where to get it and what it will cost without leaving home. I can also compare prices, which helps me to save money. Besides, I can buy the things I need online and they will be delivered to me which saves me a lot of time.

Speaker В.With the help of the Internet I can chat with different people from different countries, learn more and more about our world, different lifestyles and thinking. The Internet offers a place where we can communicate with each other. By exchanging ideas, learning other peoples’ customs and traditions, we get to know people from all over the world and how our life compares to other people’s lives in other countries.

Speaker С. I work all by myself doing translations. I find contacts on the web by publishing my advertisement on different Internet sites. Then I get texts from customers by e-mail, and return the completed translation to them. And when doing translations I use all kinds of on-line dictionaries. I also get paid through the Internet, so it saves me a lot of time.

Speaker D. There is a lot of information and things on the Internet. But many of them can hurt other people easily. The Internet has a risk of receiving spy programs or viruses, which can damage your computer. Moreover, you can meet bad people when chatting. According to crime statistics, there have been many people who suffered because of chatting to people they didn’t know.

Speaker E. I used to chat on the Internet because I wanted to improve my English. Then I started to write in forums because I think that there you can get to know very intelligent people and share your interests. From my research, I think the best way to learn English over the Internet is to chat online. You can also find some tests on the Internet and check your progress.

Speaker F. The Internet has a wide variety of information such as data, pictures, graphs, film or book reviews and suchlike. For example, instead of going to a library you can search the Internet at home and find information for a report, an essay or anything you need in no time. Also, the Internet has lots of news from all over the world, so it’s easy to find out what’s going on. So, it is very helpful for people of different age groups.

Speaker A. All my friends from private school are snobbish now because they moved from the state school I go to. I don’t understand why everyone thinks private schools are better. I’m not saying I have anything against private schools, but it does make me a bit upset when I see all the people that used to go to state school acting snobbish because of a silly little thing like having more lessons in biology, physics and chemistry than I have in my school.

Speaker В. I hated my state school that I went to when I was younger. But don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against state schools in general. I know I was just unlucky. My brother and sister stayed at a state school right up until their final exams. They both got really good grades, which proves that private school education isn’t better for everyone. As for me, I found that people were friendlier in my private school, and I felt a lot happier. I know this is not always the case, because my brother and sister enjoyed going to the state school.

Speaker С. Well, I would like to say, I go to a private school and I was shocked at how much some people take for granted. One of my classmates got a plasma screen TV for her birthday and a laptop for Christmas, and she just spoke about them as if they were ordinary presents, nothing special. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it, just sometimes if you have a lot of money, it is important to remember that you are lucky, because some families are so poor that they have no money to buy a TV-set in the sales.

Speaker D. A lot of people who go to my private school are not that rich at all. My parents just wanted the best education for me and this school was the right choice. Smaller classes are much better, I found this from my own experience. Here we do separate sciences and I think it allows people to understand which sciences they like and see which they are good at. You can also study physics, chemistry and biology in much more detail as well as languages, history and so on.

Speaker E. I go to private school, and we have to wear a uniform and I know why we have to have it. If the people in my school didn’t have to wear it then they would come to school in too short skirts or torn trousers. And you always get the people who can come into school and look almost like Halloween, with make up running down their faces and chains hanging off every place. Not the right things to wear to school I think. School uniform disciplines pupils and makes them look nice and clean.

Speaker F. I go to a busy city centre school, I think there are about 1100 pupils and about 120 teachers. The corridors are really narrow in some of the buildings and there are crowds of pupils running and pushing when the bell goes and everyone is there. One of the corridors is so narrow that we have a ‘one way system’. The school definitely needs broader corridors as well as larger classrooms.

Speaker A. For my work practice I worked at Middle School. Over the two weeks I watched the teachers and worked with the children. I interacted with the pupils and helped encourage them to learn during their lessons. Teaching and working with children was much harder than I expected it to be, it isn’t a simple job. A full classroom of children can be very hard to control, so I have total respect for teachers now.

Speaker В. For my work practice I worked at the City Hospital. I think it is good to get some work experience because we get to see what it is like to work somewhere. I had a lot of different jobs to do: I helped make beds, take people’s pulse and blood pressure, make tea or coffee for the patients in the ward, serve lunches at lunchtime and get people’s notes ready. I enjoyed talking to the patients, bringing a smile to their faces.

Speaker С. I worked at a big store. I really didn’t enjoy myself and I think it was really a waste of time. During the day I worked from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. putting products on shelves. I got a morning break, a lunch hour and an afternoon break which was very good! Some of the time I was able to work on the customer help desk in the store. I wasn’t given much responsibility and wasn’t taught anything new during the day.

Speaker D. Now I am working in a department store and I like it but I clearly remember my first impressions. They were like OH MY GOD look how long I have to work and OH MY GOD I have to wear a horrible looking uniform! I was really afraid to call the store to arrange my first visit. But after I had spoken to the manager and she had answered all my questions some of my fears were gone.

Speaker E. I worked at a graphics company. During my two weeks I basically did nothing except helping the staff to deliver things and collect equipment. The worst part of my work experience was at the beginning when I didn’t have a lot to do. I was sitting watching people work, but as the days went on, I was given more responsibility. I really enjoyed my time at work practice and found it really interesting.

Speaker F. I worked with children, helping out in Physical Education classes during the day and attending clubs and matches after school. The children were aged between 9 and 13. My best moment was helping children to play cricket. I really enjoy sport and enjoy the interaction with others. So working with children or something to do with sports is what I would like to do when I become an adult.

Speaker A. I really loved my high school but it was a time when I was having a lot of arguments and fights at home. So school was the place where I went to escape from all my problems and I really worked hard. I stayed at school long hours. I didn’t want to go home. And I loved my teachers and a lot of us are still friends. So, yeah, high school was great.

Speaker В. High school was quite a good experience for me really. My high school wasn’t a fantastic school, just an ordinary one. But I had lots of fun, made lots of good friends, learned how to communicate and how to avoid conflicts. Yeah, I think I came out of it able to deal with life problems.

Speaker С. High school for me was, well, quite dull although they call it formative years. I enjoyed my senior year because I didn’t go to high school as often as I did before my senior year. Overall, I didn’t do much and didn’t learn much either. So my high school was a little difficult and a little strange.

Speaker D. OK, I think I loved my high school. That was the best part of my whole school life because I had my best friends there and a bunch of good teachers, a lot of hard work and studies, happy and sad moments. And it was fantastic. Also we had our final exams in high school. It was really tough, but I had great friends in my class so we did a lot of joint studying and were really successful.

Speaker E. I loved high school. I absolutely loved it. I can’t even describe it. I grew up in a town of 1,000 people and so my whole graduating class was 35 people who I had known since my childhood and we were all very, very close, like, maybe, brothers or

sisters. And still my best friends are two people from my high school. The years spent at high school were the happiest.

Speaker F. I have to admit, I loved high school. I thought high school was the best. It’s a really good time, you know. You play sports, you’re in clubs, you hang out with your friends, but what I remember most about high school though, is that I thought it would never end. I mean at that point, you’ve been in school your entire life and I remember thinking, ‘You know what, I’m always going to be a student. They’re never going to let me out of school.’ But eventually they did.

Speaker A. I’ve always read books for comfort, and when I was in London, as a participant of an exchange programme, scared and lost, so far from my family and friends, I simply found a book store and bought the first two Harry Potter books there. I read them both in one night and then over and over again. It wasn’t just comfort, it was like I found a good friend in a place where I had none, and I certainly became braver.

Speaker В. Harry Potter books have influenced me greatly. They helped me to understand that honesty, friendship and love are all we need. Now I look at the future in a more positive way than I had done before reading these books which speak’ about friendship. Harry Potter is never alone. When he does something difficult or frightening, his friends are always around and they give him all the help he needs.

Speaker С. The best thing Harry Potter books have given me is a philosophy for life. I found it in the words of Harry himself, his friends and other people around him. When I face problems, I remember some phrases from the books and I keep on fighting. I don’t give up, because Harry never does. I’ve known before, that theoretically there is no such a thing as a hopeless situation, but now I truly believe it.

Speaker D. I’ve always liked reading. And I love the fact that Harry Potter books have given me my own private magical world. When I read Harry Potter, I feel so glad that I have a wonderful secret that no one else knows. I get the feeling that the books put everything around me into a different, magical light, and the world of Harry Potter comes into mine, making ordinary things and people look strange.

Speaker E. Before I read Harry Potter books, and became interested in them, I didn’t read too much. I just didn’t understand what books could do. But after reading Harry Potter, I felt that I was in his world, and I thought, well, maybe other books can do that too. Now I just love reading, and the pleasure that I get from reading has become possible only because of that first Harry Potter book.

Speaker F. Harry Potter books have helped me in many ways. For example, last year I had to take my final exams and I was under a lot of stress because of that. Harry. Potter characters also have a lot of exams and when I felt especially stressed and worried, I read those passages from the books and felt a little better, as if I was sharing my problems with friends. And the funny moments in the books cheered me up.
