10

Установите соответствие между заголовками 1—8 и текстами A—G. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

1. Hazardous Waste
2. Invisible Threat
3. Primary Reason
4. Possible Solutions

5. Global Destruction
6. Disastrous Growth
7. Water Shortage
8. Quick Change

A. Acid rain moves easily, affecting locations far beyond those that let out the pollution. As a result, this global pollution issue causes great debates between countries that fight over polluting each other’s environments. The problem is that acid rain, one of the most important environmental problems of all, cannot be seen. Some scientists think that human production is primarily responsible, while others cite natural causes as well.

B. Air pollution has many disastrous effects that need to be curbed. In order to accomplish this, governments, scientists and environmentalists are using or testing a variety of methods aimed at reducing pollution. There are two main types of pollution control. Input controls are usually more effective than output controls. Output controls are also more expensive, making them less desirable to tax payers and polluting industries.

C. Global warming is called the greenhouse effect because the gases that are gathering above the earth make the planet comparable to a greenhouse. By trapping heat, the greenhouse effect is warming the planet and threatening the environment. Current fears stem largely from the fact that global warming is occurring at such a rapid pace. Models are predicting that over the next century the global temperature will rise by several degrees.

D. Individuals often throw out goods without realizing that they could be dangerous for the environment. No matter where people put these materials, there is always a chance that they could find their way into the ground and eventually into our bodies. Special research is necessary to provide data on the effects of every chemical as well as to learn how combinations of these chemicals affect human health.

E. Only a few factors combine to create the problem of ozone layer depletion. The production and emission of CFCs, chlorofluorocarbons, is by far the leading cause. Many countries have called for the end of CFC production. However, those industries that do use CFCs do not want to discontinue usage of this highly valuable industrial chemical. So it’s important to make people realize the disaster CFCs cause in the stratosphere.

F. Unlike some environmental issues, rainforest depletion has fortunately received significant public and media attention. According to some estimates, 50 million acres of rain forest are cut down every year. Every year, Brazil chops down an area of forest the size of the state of Nebraska. In Indonesia, Zaire, Papua-New Guinea, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela, rain forests that were once great have been lost.

G. The world’s population has been booming for years. The population is now threatening to reach the stage where there are simply too many people for the planet to support. Greater populations pollute and consume more, ruining the environment and creating or intensifying a variety of problems. Also, with the food supply limited, the increase in population will make shortages in many parts of the world even worse.

After graduating from medical school, Eugene Alford built a lucrative career as an ear, nose, and throat specialist and a facial plastic surgeon at Methodist Hospital. In the summers, he and his wife Mary, a dentist and former paediatric nurse, would join a church-sponsored medical mission to Honduras, where he operated on the needy in a rural clinic.

At home, Alford treated many prominent Houston residents, but he also waived his fee for less fortunate patients. Carolyn Thomas, for instance, went to see him with a large gauze bandage over a cavity in her face. She had been shot by her boyfriend, who had also killed her mother. The bullet had blown away Thomas’s nose, upper jaw, and right eye. Reconstruction would have cost a million dollars, but Alford, his medical team, and his hospital did it for free.

Whenever Alford needed to relax after a particularly gruelling period of work, he’d drive to his ranch in Bellville and lose himself in farm chores. He didn’t make it out there as often as he would have liked. As a plastic surgeon at Methodist Hospital, he had performed 800 operations over the previous year and was booked solid for months ahead.

So on a chilly Sunday a few days after Christmas, Alford headed out through the pine bush, intending to clear a trail for deer hunting. As he cut through underbrush in the south pasture, Alford brought the tractor to a halt in front of a dead white oak standing in his path. He nudged the trunk with the tractor’s front-end loader, expecting the tree to topple neatly to the ground. Instead the top half of the oak swayed towards him. In seconds, more than a ton of hardwood slammed down on him, crushing his spine.

Pinned to the steering wheel, Alford could barely breathe. He tried to hit the brakes, but his legs failed to respond. When he found he could move his hands, he turned off the ignition, then with great effort pulled his cell phone from his shirt pocket and called his wife on speed dial. ‘Mary,’ he gasped, ‘a tree fell on me. I’m going to die.’ ‘Don’t quit!’ she shouted. ‘We’re coming to get you!’ Alford was still conscious when his neighbours Kevin and Snuffy, alerted by Mary, hauled the tree off him. A rescue helicopter touched down minutes later, and Alford advised the paramedics on which drugs to administer to him. Then he blacked out.

He was flown to the trauma unit at Medical Centre in Houston, then quickly transferred to Methodist. The operation was successful, but the patient was still in danger. After almost two weeks in the ICU, Alford awoke, and his condition improved enough for him to be taken to a rehabilitation unit, where he began physical therapy and learned to use a wheelchair. In February 2008, six weeks after the accident, Alford returned to his 100-year-old home in Houston. At first, he was so weak that he could sit up only when strapped into a wheelchair.

Before the accident, Alford had been a solidly built six-footer and was used to being in charge. Now, entirely dependent on others, he fell into despair. ‘If it weren’t for my wife and kids, I would have killed myself,’ he says. But then the love started pouring in. Alford’s brother maintained a blog to provide updates about Alford’s recovery. Over the next three months, he received 40,000 messages from colleagues, former patients, acquaintances, even strangers. The outpouring raised his spirits. It also gave Mary a new perspective on him. For years, Alford’s schedule of 15-hour days hadn’t left him much time for her and the kids. ‘I’d just about decided you liked work more than us,’ Mary told him one day over lunch. ‘But now I realize you didn’t want to leave the hospital because there were so many folks that needed you. You couldn’t just abandon them.’

The couple refurbished their house with ramps, a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, and an elevator. They bought an extended-cab pickup truck and fitted it with a wheelchair hoist, a swivelling driver’s seat, and hand controls so Alford could drive himself.

But Alford’s goal was to make such adjustments temporary. After a month of physical therapy, he graduated from an electric to a manual wheelchair. The daily workouts built strength in his back and abdominal muscles, improving his ability to hold himself upright. Soon he was able to stand with the aid of a tubular steel frame; seated in his chair, he could now draw his legs toward his chest.

In May, Alford began the next phase of treatment. By putting a paralyzed patient through his paces, therapists hoped to grow new neuromuscular connections. After three months of this routine, Alford’s coordination had improved markedly. He felt ready to pick up a scalpel again, with the hospital’s approval. Alford still goes for four hours of rehab every morning and spends his evenings stretching and riding a motorized stationary bike to keep muscle spasms at bay. But in the hours between, he sees patients or performs surgeries — as many as five a week.

He’s eager to do more complex surgeries and plans to increase his workload. Walking remains uncertain. ‘I always tell him if I had a crystal ball, I’d be a millionaire,’ says Marcie Kern, one of his physical therapists. Still, the doctor considers himself a lucky man.

Shopping Malls

I think I may be allergic to shopping malls. I am not sure if my condition has ever been recorded officially by medical science but I am sure there are who suffer as I do.

All I have to do is walk inside one of these awful places and within minutes the artificial “day light” from a thousand “soft” lights to give me a headache.

Then there is the piped music which tunes in and out. endlessly from shop to shop, my brain slowly turns into a large vegetable.

Christmas is in July and Valentines’ day is in October in these unreal labyrinths. A Christmas gift, paid for in August seems wrong to.

And surely no one can believe signs that promise the sale

Shopping should be exciting in my opinion with fresh sites and beautiful goods to buy. Instead it feels much to being in a

Worst still is trying to leave. I can never find my way out to fresh air and daylight. I wonder if some poor souls remain down there for weeks on end.

Church Calendar

Almost everyone uses calendars. The most common use actually is to mark the passing days and seasons. Quite a few people also mark them as or use them to remember birthdays, appointments or other important occasions.

The same is true of calendars based on religious experience and religions have annual festivals on different dates, to remember those things that are most important to them.

Those of Jewish Faith follow events that revolve around the Exodus. This was the journey of the Israelites out of Egypt to the new land that they God had promised them.

Although the Christian Church has many different “branches”, most of them have calendars based on the life and ministry of Jesus. The Calendar helps believers to remember throughout the year the most important aspects of faith.

In the UK, the festivals of the Christian Church are Christmas and Easter. The most popular by far is Christmas and huge numbers visit Church on Dec24th (Christmas Eve) each year to sing carols and remember the birth of Jesus.

Some dates in the Church are fixed — others vary. The date for Easter, for example, typically between late March and late

April (Western Christianity) and early April to early May (Eastern Orthodox). The date is set by a Iunisolar calendar, following the cycle of the moon.

As a congregation moves through the church calendar, events in an organized way with the opportunity to talk about different faith confessions. This also helps children to visualise and learn about their religion, history and culture.

Weather in the UK

подпись: c≡]подпись: ∏bβThe UK lies on a boundary between warm tropical air and cold polar air. Large temperature variations create instability and this is the major reason for the UK’s often unsettled weather. In the UK many types of weather can in a single day.

Regional climates in the UK are influenced by latitude and the Atlantic Ocean. The western regions, being closest to the Ocean, are the mildest, wettest and parts of the country.

Eastern areas are generally drier, cooler, and windy but subject to greater temperature variations. Northern areas are cooler, wetter and have a smaller temperature range than southern areas.

The UK is a relatively small landmass with an awful lot of weather! Officially it “enjoys” a climate of mixed status — Oceanic, Temperate and Temperate Maritime. Is it any wonder that the British enjoy the weather?

Can you imagine a February afternoon in Novisibirsk with people discussing over tea whether there sunshine or rain during

The idea of “sunbathing” and Siberia” in the same sentence is nonsense to them! Then again, many Russians seem to believe the myth that the UK is always shrouded in rain and fog. Possibly Dickens is to blame for this delusion! But it is true that the British like talking about the weather. Well — at least we do have something to talk about.

Famous British?

подпись: 0≡подпись: ∣~b5подпись: в6подпись: [b8^∣подпись: гв9подпись: [вйг]A recent international survey on the most important British people of all time yielded some interesting results. It turns out that three of the top ten Brits probably never even FAMOUS

They think it a shame that the people of the world have recognised as real, historical characters, three fictional characters as being among nation’s top ten most well — WE

So who are these three, who denied Henry VIII and David

Nottingham exists and so does Sherwood Forest but, People of the World, please understand that Mr R. Hood never existed! Of course there are stories and legends of various robber HERO but the story of Robin Hood is as historically accurate as that of Father Christmas.

Finally who could be so important, in world opinion, to HOLD in fame above Sir Issac Newton and Mr Bean (sorry — Rowan Atkinson)? The answer of course is that romantic, sword twirling, nation saving monarch with a round table — King Arthur.

You could of course read lots of books that argue for and against King Arthur. Or you could take my word for it — he never existed! Certainly he a top ten place. Neither in my NOT DESERVE opinion does Princess Diana, who is also in the top 10.

Our school used to have a ritual day of torture, embarrassment and humiliation for the less athletic pupils at the school. It Sports Day.

Traditionally we were treated to this day of horrors two days before the end of the school year. Even now I remember well the awful practice afternoons up to this inglorious spectacle!

And indeed there were many spectators: parents, teachers and classmates were all there to cheer and applaud the, fastest and most successful athletes in the school.

For useless athletes like me, these were the worst days of our school.

However, I eventually developed a strategy that made it a little. I took up throwing the hammer. The Hammer throw demanded little energy. A fast spin and then letting the thing go at the right moment (and hopefully not killing any innocent spectator) was all that was needed.

Amazingly I quite good at it. At least I was no longer

The poor, red faced fool coming in last on the race track!

Finally, on my last Sports Day — two days before my last ever school day — I came in the Hammer Throw, stood on a

Podium and was presented with a bronze medal!

8.  A tricky question

A. Have you ever wondered where our food comes from? The obvious answer is that it comes from the supermarket. However, that still doesn’t answer the question because nowadays, it can come from anywhere on the planet. In addition, we have no idea how some of the food products we buy, such as hot dogs or cookies, are made. For us, food is sometimes a mystery.

B. Long ago, things were not so mysterious. Our ancestors would have known exactly where their food had come from. When we were hunters and gatherers, we ate what we killed or gathered with our own hands. Later as farmers, we grew or raised the food that we ate. If we didn’t grow it ourselves, it would have come from a nearby farm or at the furthest, a neighboring village.

C. Beginning in the late 15th century, during the development of trade with India and America everything changed. Explorers discovered exotic kinds of food such as potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkins and chocolate, and introduced them to Europe. Although they are common now, people back then were suspicious and even thought they might be poisonous. All of a sudden, what you were eating was not so obvious.

D. In recent times, technology and modern forms of transportation have changed things even more. Food can be shipped from one side of the planet to the other, and refrigeration means that we don’t have to worry about things spoiling. As a result, the whole idea of seasonal fruits and vegetables has lost its meaning and it no longer seems strange to eat strawberries in winter. Exotic fruits have become common, and many people have no idea where they come from.

E. Advances in food science and chemistry have changed food even more. Processed foods such as cookies, cereal, spaghetti sauces and soft drinks are made in factories with chemicals. The reason this is done is to save money since natural ingredients cost much more than artificial ones. It’s also done to increase the shelf life, meaning the time that the products can remain on the shelves of the supermarket without going bad.

F. Even if you avoid eating processed foods, you still can’t be sure what you are eating. Farming practices have changed beyond recognition and farms are often run like a factory. Animals are injected with hormones to make them fat and fruits and vegetables are genetically modified to produce ‘improved’ versions. In addition, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are regularly sprayed on plants. The health effects of this are not yet known and have yet to be seen.

G. So what can you do? The main thing you can do is educate yourself so that you know exactly what you are eating. Read the labels carefully and know what chemical ingredients are harmful. Try to buy organic fruits and vegetables that are grown naturally or buy them from local farmers’ markets. By being aware and selective of the food that we buy, we can be more certain of what we are eating, enjoy more delicious food, as well as make sure we are eating healthily.

A. John and James are identical twins but they don’t go to the same school. Their parents felt this would help them develop individual tastes, interests and styles-but the boys at first hated the idea. Now they are really happy at their schools but occasionally they swap places just for fun! The brothers are best friends but they now agree that their parents were probably correct.

B. Anna and Beth are twin sisters but they are most unlike each other. Technically they are «non-identical» twins. Anna is blonde and Beth is a brunette. Anna is noisy, energetic and always crashing around to hip hop and rap. Beth is much quieter and likes listening to classical music and reading. Anna eats anything and Beth is a vegetarian. But they are, absolutely, the closest and best of friends.

C. The Perkins children, Sally and John, both study hard every evening after college and most weekends. Sally studies French, history and Art. He wants to study in St. Petersburg and to set up his own import business. I am sure both will succeed.

D. Greg’s dad believes that there is no original, exciting new music being written and performed today. Greg strongly disagrees and can name several new bands and singers that are both completely original and really popular. But his Dad is a professional musician and was quite successful when he was young. He argues that nearly every successful song now is simply a reworked version of an older one.

F. Serious stamp collectors are men and women who appreciate details. To the casual observer, the oldest postage stamps in the world — the Victorian «Penny Blacks» — all look identical. Millions were made but only a few of them are truly valuable. A serious collector knows this and the ability to find tiny variations in the paper, ink or code used helps them to find the «Penny Black’s» that are rare and valuable.

Family meal times.

The family meal time is one of the most valuable routines to establish in the life of a family. Research has proved that children who eat at least one meal a week with their families benefit greatly in terms of social skills and acceptance of shared responsibilities. They learn simply and directly through their own experience, the importance of family interaction find the value of close friendship, support and loyalty

In theory and with practice, a shared meal can be the setting for peaceful conversation and allow each family member the opportunity to talk about his/her day, and possibly to discuss any problems or issues. Successful family meal times are primarily about talking and communication. In the modern age of 24 hour TV, computer games and computer social networking sites — the fact is that it is often easier to eat alone rather than together. Furthermore, if parents fail to establish these routines whilst their children are young it is very hard to implement them when the kids become teenagers. But it is not impossible. There are various strategies available for promoting shared family meals.

It is of first importance that every family member should be made to understand the possible benefits; namely that our lives really can be better in general if we make the effort to communicate more effectively. Next step — a weekly meal together can be set as a realistic first goal. The meal should be quite a tasty and popular one as an inducement to keep the kids away from computers and TV sets!

It is important that shared meals should not be the setting for trying to deal with family disputes. There will always be arguments from time to time — even in the happiest and closest families. But these should be kept away from the dinner table if possible. Parents are encouraged to set the tone by example. Light hearted banter, stories about the day and a joke or two can help set the tone. They can also help by being attentive listeners and appropriate responders. Successes should be marked by congratulation and bad news supported with commiseration. Quieter family members should be encouraged by asking what their opinion is on something, rather than about what they did or failed to do. It makes them feel more important and valued. Sometimes a good start can help a simple family meal go on to be a really enjoyable or even memorable experience.

The next stage in building this routine can be to introduce more days. In our experience the best place to start is Sunday lunch. The second might be to establish Wednesday nights as family meal time. Of course the most important thing is flexibility. This and a bit of effort are required to set up helpful routines but the pay back can be immense for a family.

Dinnertime family routines, especially if established early on, have all kinds of other potential benefits. For example children can be encouraged to prepare one course (possibly on an agreed rota): they might even be encouraged to compete to produce maybe an exceptional soup or a truly sensational desert! This can be good fun.

Once established, family meal routines are also great for developing good table manners and «work» habits. Children can learn to set the table, help with clearing up and generally build good patterns of co-operation with their parents, friends and the people they meet with in daily life.

12

12

We know that children who eat with their parents benefit because they

1. have greater intelligence.

2. show better test results.

3. develop better social skills.

4. learn to speak sooner.

13

13

Establishing a routine family meal is

1. impossible because of computer games, TV, etc.

2. possible only when the children are young.

3. impossible as to eat alone is easier than together.

4. possible with a strategic approach.

14

14

The most important thing in creating a new routine is to

1. start with one shared meal per week.

2. make sure everyone understands the benefits.

3. tempt everyone with a popular meal.

4. keep the kids away from computers and TV sets.

15

15

Shared family meals should

1. accept that even happy families sometimes argue.

2. involve telling lots of jokes as a must.

3. be the setting for trying to deal with family disputes.

4. never be used for family heated discussions.

16

16

Quiet family members should be encouraged to participate in a conversation by

1. asking them to express their opinions.

2. asking about what they have done.

3. inviting them to share their problems.

4. congratulating them from time to time.

17

17

The next stage in building a meal sharing routine is to

1. introduce as many days as possible.

2. introduce cookery competitions.

3. add Wednesday night to the schedule.

4. be persistent and more flexible.

18

18

Once established, family meals are crucial for

1. getting the table set for and cleared after a meal.

2. establishing better rapport with family and friends.

3. teaching children table manners and «work» skills.

4. making the children more independent in life.

The greenhouse effect causes the temperature on Earth to rise. It happens because heat cannot escape through the upper levels of the air surrounding the Earth. The consequences of the greenhouse effect may be disastrous: arctic ice is gradually melting, sea-level is rising. As a result, all coastal areas may be flooded.

Global warming is the result of overheating of the air. It is caused by carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels which collect in the space around the Earth. Acid rain contains harmful quantities of acid. It is mostly caused by emissions which react in the atmosphere to produce acids. Acid rain can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals, and buildings. Besides, it has adverse impacts on human health. Ozone depletion refers to the slow decline of ozone in the Earth’s stratosphere. Ozone is a protective layer absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation which is produced by the Sun. Ultraviolet radiation may cause skin cancer and affect the growth of plants.

Вы проводите информационный поиск в ходе выполнения проектной работы. Определите, в каком из текстов A — F содержатся ответы на интересующие Вас вопросы 1 — 7. Один из вопросов останется без ответа.

1. What is the most unusual way to get to church on Christmas night?
2. Who can bring Christmas presents instead of Santa?
3. Why is the first guest on Christmas Day so important?
4. What creature helped to decorate a Christmas tree?
5. What transport does Santa use in warm countries?
6. How do people celebrate Christmas in hot climate?
7. Why is Christmas celebrated on another date in this country?

A. For people who live in the northern hemisphere, the thought of celebrating Christmas with great heat and bright sun seems strange and exotic. But in Australia, where the holiday falls in summer, it’s completely normal. Though most of the traditions of celebrating Christmas in Australia are the same as in European countries, there is still a little variation. On Christmas Day, most Australians have the holiday midday dinner outside. The dinner is often followed by some backyard cricket or a swim in the pool.

B. In Italy, children do not ask Santa Claus for presents. In their country an ugly, yet kind old witch named Befana performs Santa’s duties. The witch flies around the world on her broomstick and entersthe houses down the chimney. She delivers toys, clothing and candy to well-behaved children and puts coal — or dark candy — in bad kids’ socks.

C. A Ukrainian legend tells us about children from a poor family. Unfortunately, their parents could not afford any Christmas decorations and the kids were upset. However, on Christmas morning when the children woke up, they saw that spiders had spun webs of shiny silk around the tree’s branches. The sun turned each thread into silver and gold. Even nowadays the Ukrainians decorate their trees with spider webs to welcome good luck.

D. Different celebrations take place over Christmas in Scotland. One of the most important traditions is called First-Footing. Once midnight strikes, all eyes await the arrival of the year’s first visitor. The person who crosses the home’s threshold first is said to bring good fortune for the year ahead. Top of the lucky list: a male, dark-haired visitor. Women or blonde men are believed to be unlucky.

E. According to tradition, on Christmas Eve some Russian people don’t eat anything until the first star has appeared in the sky. In Russia, Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January, not on the 25th of December like in most other countries. The different date of the holiday is because the Orthodox Church uses the old ‘Julian’ calendar for religious celebration days.

F. Like in most countries the locals of Venezuela, especially in their capital city, Caracas, go to church on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, in Caracas, people of all ages don’t just walk to church, they usually roller skate to church. The streets of Caracas are closed to vehicles up to 8am on Christmas Day to make way for their citizens who use roller skates to travel to and from church.
