32-38. Speaker A. I have recently watched a film about travelling through time, and I wish I could do it myself. If I had a time machine, I would definitely go to the future. I really want to see what our world will look like in one thousand years. I think life will be great and I just want to see if scientists will be able to cure cancer or will be able to make all those things we can see in sci-fi movies. I’d take pictures and come back to my time and show these pictures to everybody.

Speaker B. If you ask me, I think a time machine is an invention which is potentially very dangerous indeed. First of all, I don’t think people should know what the future holds for them. This is my opinion about seeing the future with the help of a time machine. As for travelling back to our past, well, I think anything can change the course of events. Do we know what events might result from going back to the past? Nobody knows it. It’s just not safe, I think.

Speaker C. If I could travel through time, I think I’d go and see the past, the period when dinosaurs lived and then the ice age and then how ancient people lived and how the Egyptians built their pyramids or how Stonehenge was built and so on. There are so many mysteries around us and I sometimes think the scientists will never find the answers to all the questions that we have about our past. So, a time machine may be our only chance to learn the truth

Speaker D. I think people will never be able to travel through time. If you read books about it, you can see that people have been dreaming about it for a long time, really. If it were possible, we would already learn to do it. There are some things about our universe which will remain mysteries forever and maybe it is good, maybe it should be this way. A time machine can exist only in sci-fi books or movies, but people will never be able to make one.

Speaker E. If I knew how to travel through time, I’d go to the past, and probably would never get back to our time. I think life was much better in the past. People were more honest and loyal, I believe. The air and the water were cleaner, there were not so many factories and the world was safe to live in. Of course there were more illnesses and hygiene was a serious problem, but I don’t want to go too far to our past, you know, maybe the 18th or the 19th century.

Speaker F. I don’t think travelling through time is impossible. Let’s say, a hundred years ago, the whole concept of the Internet, smartphones, video calls and instant messaging services was far from looking real. Now, any five year old can surf the net or use a smartphone. I believe in the future people will make a time machine because people are curious and they are capable of anything. I don’t know if it’s going to be good or bad to invent it though.

Salmon and trout swim in the clean, pure water of the rivers. Some say that not only fish swim in the deep water of Loch Ness. Speak to the people living by the Loch. Each person has a story of the monster, and some have photographs.

B. Tresco is a beautiful island with no cars, crowds or noise  — just flowers, birds, long sandy beaches and the Tresco Abbey Garden. John and Wendy Pyatt welcome you to the Island Hotel, famous for delicious food, comfort and brilliant service. You will appreciate superb accommodation, free saunas and the indoor swimming pool.

C. The Camel and Wildlife Safari is a unique mixture of the traditional and modern. Kenya’s countryside suits the Safari purposes exceptionally well. Tourists will have a chance to explore the bush country near Samburu, to travel on a camel back or to sleep out under the stars. Modern safari vehicles are always available for those who prefer comfort.

D. Arrival can be the hardest part of a trip. It is late, you are road-weary, and everything is new and strange. You need an affordable place to sleep, something to eat and drink, and probably a way to get around. But in general, it’s a wonderful trip, full of wonderful and unusual places. Whether it is the first stop on a trip or the fifth city visited, every traveller feels a little overwhelmed stepping onto a new street in a new city.

E. No zoo has enough money to provide basic habitats or environments for all the species they keep. Most animals are put in a totally artificial environment, isolated from everything they would meet in their natural habitat. Many will agree that this isolation is harmful to the most of zoo inhabitants, it can even amount to cruelty.

F. A new London Zoo Project is a ten year project to secure the future for the Zoo and for many endangered animals. The plan has been devised by both animal and business experts to provide world-leading accommodation for all our animals, to more fully engage and inform people about conservation issues, to redesign certain aspects of Zoo layout.

G. Leave-no-trace camping is an increasingly popular approach to travel in wilderness areas. As the term suggests, the goal is for the camper to leave as little impact as possible on the place he is visiting. One of its mottos is “Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints.” Its simplest and most fundamental rule is: pack it in, pack it out, but it goes beyond that.

Presenter: Good afternoon, and here we are with our special program for teens where we explore advantages and disadvantages of all sorts of professions. Today we have Carl Fox, a travel agent. Hello, Carl!

Carl Fox: Good afternoon.

Presenter: So Carl, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Carl Fox: Well, as you already know, I’m a travel agent, and I work for one of the major chains on High Street. I’ve been with them for about 10 years and while I’ve been working I’ve studied for a number of qualifications.

Presenter: What inspired you to become a travel agent?

Carl Fox: People often ask me why I decided to become a travel agent. As a young adult I loved travelling and worked for a while as a rep in Spain. When I came back to the UK I decided to stay within the travel industry, and my experience of working in resorts abroad helped me to get a job as a travel agent. I have to admit that one of the main reasons I wanted to be a travel agent was that we get cheap flights and holidays. It’s a great perk!

Presenter: I see. What are your responsibilities at your job?

Carl Fox: Basically, I’m a sales person. I advise people on the holiday options available to them, you know, different destinations, types of holiday, ways to get there, and so on. When customers have decided what they want, I book it for them and make any other arrangements they might need, such as car hire or tours. My responsibility doesn’t end there, though. I have to make sure that clients know if any visas are necessary, or if they will need accinations, and how to get them. If they are flying, I need to tell them what time they have to check in, and make sure they know what time they will be arriving. I also give information on likely weather conditions and anything else I think will be useful for them.

Presenter: That’s a lot to do! And I bet it’s getting more and more difficult to work in your sphere because of the rivalry.

Carl Fox: Well, not because the rivalry is too high, it’s the same everywhere. The point is that more and more customers want a tailor-made holiday, not just a package from a brochure. However, I love the challenge! It’s a lot more interesting for me if I can organize the whole thing — make out an itinerary, book flights, ferries, trains, accommodation and everything. I love providing a personalized service, especially if it’s to places that I know. I can really help customers get a great holiday that will be ideal for them.

Presenter: People who are going on holiday must be relaxed and easy to deal with, right?

Carl Fox: Generally yes, but not always. Sometimes I get difficult customers. One man came in wanting a flight to Venice the next day. I checked out times and fares on the computer, and found a very reasonable flight at a suitable time, so we booked it there and then. A week later he came in and he was absolutely furious. He wanted to know why I had flown him to Venice, in Italy, when he had had an important meeting in Vienna, which is in Austria. I didn’t know what to say, but since then I’ve always been careful to check that people really know where they want to go.

Presenter: That’s a case which is funny and sad at the same time and it’s hard to believe it after all.

Carl Fox: Don’t I know!

Presenter: Any downsides to your job?

Carl Fox: There must be some but I love my job so I simply don’t notice them.

Presenter: I see. Thank you very much, Carl.

Carl Fox: My pleasure.

Alice: I’m just going to the shop to get a few bits and pieces. Do you need anything?

Dad: You couldn’t pick up a half a dozen litre bottles of carbonated water could you?

Alice: I would Dad but I am going by bike and I can’t get anything heavy. It’s more a case of anything small and urgent — then I’m your girl.

Dad: Well we need batteries for the remote control. They are small and really urgent. We’ll not be able to watch TV otherwise

Alice: More urgent for you than for me. But no problem, batteries: Anything else?

Dad: I think we are pretty low on toothpaste and maybe soap. Do you want to check?

Alice: I checked already and we have plenty.

Dad: I know what we really need — a roll of insulation tape. Some wires have come loose under the stairs and I promised your mum that I would sort it out. Actually we need a new box of fuses as well. They really have run out because I looked yesterday. And by the way we need a new screwdriver set because

Alice: I am not sure if I can get those from the shop on the corner. Probably it will be necessary to go into the centre of town.

Dad: Why don’t we both go? I’ll take the car and then we can stock up on some of the heavier things like water, fruit and veg.

Alice: You haven’t looked outside have you? There’s been an accident at the top of Gardner Street. The police have now closed it to cars and set up a diversion but the traffic is at a complete standstill. The only way to travel just now is by bike or on foot which is why I am going to cycle there.

Dad: I didn’t realize. Was it a bad accident?

Alice: They say on the radio news that nobody was hurt but 5 vehicles are involved and they don’t expect the road to be open again until later this evening.

Dad: I see. So we won’t get a chance to visit the town centre shops until tomorrow. In that case just some batteries — if they sell them at the corner shop. I hope they do because I don’t know how a TV addict like you will possibly survive a whole evening without TV

Alice: Ha-ha. Well it takes one to know one

Dad: Be careful on the bike. The traffic may be at a standstill but there are always a few drivers who go on pavements and similar stunts. Have you asked your Mum or brother if they need anything urgent?

Alice: I asked Mum but she doesn’t need anything. Michael’s still not home from college.

1.  Water-related diseases

2.  Personal measure

3.  Ways of using

4.  More than survival

5.  Physical characteristics

6.  Worrying statistics

7.  Hard to get

8.  Natural threats

A. Water is the most important resource for mankind. It is a condition for all life on our planet, a factor for any social and technological development, a possible source of welfare or misery, cooperation or conflict. 97 percent of it is undrinkable because it’s saltwater. Only 3 percent of the world’s water supply is fresh water, and 77 percent of that is frozen. Of the 23 percent that is not frozen, only a half a percent is available to supply everyone with all the water they need to survive.

B. Natural disasters like earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes and other types of incidents can disrupt drinking water and wastewater systems. Water consumers, water and wastewater utilities, and private well and septic owners should be informed on what to do in emergency. It is important to be prepared because drinking water and wastewater disruptions can directly threaten your health, the health of your family, and the health of your community.

C. Water security is about fighting poverty and hunger, and protecting the environment. It is about saving children from disease. It is about allowing girls to go to school instead of walking kilometers to fetch water. It is about providing women and men with access to sanitation, wherever they live. Fundamentally, it is about peace. When we talk about water security, we are really talking about human rights, human dignity, and the development of all societies.

D. Water is the only substance that occurs naturally as a solid (ice), a liquid and a gas (water vapor). It covers about 70 percent of the Earth for approximately 1,386 million cubic kilometers. In its purest form, it’s odorless, nearly colorless and tasteless. Water molecules are naturally attracted and stick to each other like magnets. This is the reason behind many of water’s special properties, such as the fact that it’s denser in its liquid state than in its solid state (ice floats on water).

E. You use water to clean yourself, your clothes, your dishes, your car and everything else around you. You can travel on it or jump in it to cool off on hot summer days. Many of the products that you use every day contain water or were manufactured using it. It seems pretty simple, and yet there are a lot of things about it that scientists still don’t fully understand.

F. Every day you lose water. For your body to function properly, you must replenish its water supply. So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake for men is roughly 3 liters a day. The intake for women is 2.2 liters a day. But in truth, your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.

G. Around 1.1 billion people globally do not have access to clean water supply sources whereas 2.4 billion people do not have bathrooms with running water. About 2 million people die every year due to water-related diseases, most of them are children less than 5 years of age. The most affected are people in developing countries, living in extreme conditions of poverty.

1.  Getting around the city

2.  Always in a hurry

3.  Unknown side of the city

4.  Winning and losing

5.  The city of skyscrapers

6.  For the holiday and more

7.  Saving the variety

8.  Nickname for a building

A. New York is really the melting pot of the world. Over 30 percent of its residents have come from abroad. It is believed that the city has the greatest linguistic diversity on the planet. There are over 800 different languages spoken by its people. As some of these languages are nearly extinct, the City University of New York has begun a project called the Endangered Language Alliance. Its aim is to preserve rare languages like Bukhari, Vhlaski, and Ormuri.

B. New Yorkers love to think they know everything about their city: where to find the best fruit, how to avoid paying full price at museums, what route to take to avoid traffic. But New York City can reveal new treasures even to its veterans. Beyond the city where New-Yorkers work, eat, play and commute every day lies a hidden New York: mysterious, forgotten, abandoned or just overlooked. There are places about which you’re not likely to read in any guidebook.

C. The Chrysler Building was in a race with the Bank of Manhattan for getting the title of the tallest skyscraper in the world. The Bank was likely to triumph, with its height of 282 meters. But the spire of the Chrysler Building was constructed in secret inside the tower. Just one week after the Bank of Manhattan was finished, it was put in place, making it 318 meters tall and beating the Bank. It wouldn’t keep this title for long: one year later the Empire State Building was erected.

D. The Flatiron Building was constructed between 1901 and 1903 at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. It was designed by Chicago’s Daniel Burnham as a steel-frame skyscraper covered with white terra-cotta. Built as the headquarters of the Fuller Construction company, the skyscraper was meant to be named Fuller Building. But locals soon started calling it “Flatiron” because of its unusual shape. The name stuck and soon became

official.

E. How does Rockefeller Center manage to find the perfect fur-tree each Christmas season? They do aerial searches by helicopter, of course, and bring it to the city during the night when there isn’t much traffic on the streets. After the tree is taken down for the year, it continues to be useful. For example, in 2005 Habitat for Humanity used the wood to make doorframes for houses for the poor and in 2012 the paper was used to publish a book.

F. In New York life never stands still. People have to call cabs, ride subway cars, do business of all kinds, eat pizzas and sandwiches for lunch. When you multiply that by more than eight million people in less than 500 square miles, you get the idea: everyone goes everywhere as fast as it is humanly possible. Whatever you do, don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk or you’ll make everyone around you incredibly angry.

G. New York is extremely easy to navigate. Manhattan is divided into numbered streets from north to south and avenues from east to west. It’s almost impossible to get lost there. Buses are useful to travel around Manhattan, and the subway is the best means of transport to the other parts of the city. At some stage you’ll definitely use a yellow taxi. Try to get one on an avenue that’s going in the same direction you are – you’ll save time and money. And don’t forget to leave a tip for the driver.

Modern life is impossible without travelling. Thousands of people travel every day either on business or for pleasure. They can travel by air, by rail, by sea or by road.

Of course, travelling by air is the fastest and the most convenient way, but it is the most expensive too. Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see much more interesting places of the country you are travelling through.

Modern trains have very comfortable seats. There are also sleeping cars and dining cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable. Speed, comfort and safety are the main advantages of trains and planes. That is why many people prefer them to all other means.

Travelling by sea is very popular. Large ships and small river boats can visit foreign countries and different places of interest within their own country.

As for me, I prefer travelling by car. I think it’s very convenient. You needn’t reserve tour tickets. You needn’t carry heavy suitcases. You can stop wherever you wish, and spend at any place as much time as you like.

Every year my friend and I go somewhere to the South for holidays. The Black Sea is one of the most wonderful places which attracts holiday-makers all over the world. There are many rest-homes, sanatoriums and tourist camps there.

But it is also possible to rent a room or a furnished house for a couple of weeks there. Sometimes, we can place ourselves in a tent on the sea shore enjoying fresh air and the sun all day long.

As a rule, I make new friends there. In the day-time we play volley-ball, tennis, swim in the warm water of the sea and sunbathe. In the evening .

I like to sit on the beach watching the sea and enjoying the sunset. I’m fond of mountaineering. So I do a lot of climbing together with my friends. Time passes quickly and soon we have to make our way back. We return home sunburnt and full of impressions.

Travelling is very important and very common. People all around the world travel from various reasons: one of them is tourism – especially during the summer holidays. Another reason is that people want to see world‘s famous and interesting places. Some people travel for a business or for political, cultural reasons or scientfic purposes. Many people travel because it is exciting, they can see new places, meet new people and friends, eat unusual meals or to get know an exciting experiences.

In the other way travelling has also disadvantages. We can meet bad people, we can get lost in foreign country and city, be murdered or our money or laguggage may be stolen or the travelling can be for some people expensive.

There are many kinds of travelling:

Young people do hitchhiking or just hiking. Some prefer travelling by car,by ship, by air, train or by bus. These two are most frequent means of public transport, which is cheaper but also less comfortable. Someone prefer travelling on a motorcycle or riding a bike. Some people prefer romantic kinds of traveling like on a yacht, balloning, canoeing and so on.
When someone want go abroad he must get necessary documents like passport and if is there need also visa, money in currency of the country he goes to or credit card and also assurance. If someone travelling by train (fast, express) he needs ticketssingle or return, season ticket. And if he fly he need fly tickets. He should speak some foreign language to make himself understood. Most people all around the world speak English or German.
But travelling doesn’t mean only going abroad. Many people stay at home and see interesting places of their country.

Travelling takes up more time in our lives than most of us can imagine. An everyday form of travelling may be shopping, commuting to school or job, visiting friends. In town when someone hasn’t own means of transport rely on the public transportion service like trams, buses or underground.
In our country there many state or private travel agencies. Trough this agencies people have their trips, tickets an accomomdation reserved. We can aranged a lot of kinds of trips: cultural trips for sightseeing or knowing the country, recreation stays in the mountains or at the seaside.
For travelling we can use a lot of kinds of luggage: a knapsacks for longer journey like sport trip, we can fix a tent and sleeping bag to it. We use a rucksack when we going for a walk or to school. We use a suitcase when we go by air or coach and we don’t need to carry it often.

In our country are many short holidays during the school year: autumn holidays which last only few days; christmas holidays which last for 11 eleven days in which people celebrate christmas and new year, on these holidays i am usually with my family for few days, we visit my grandparents and the other relation and than a i am with my friends and we prepare for New Year‘s Eve; spring holidays last one week, on these holidays we usually go in Austria in Alps to sky; easter holidays last only few days, people draw on eggs and prepare themselves for eastern customs;and the longest summer holidays, which last for two months. My last summer holidays a spent first three weeks in England in Brighton. It was the international language course and i was one of the odlest people there. We lived in families with other students of this course and attended school. In afternoon or morning (it was up our activity leader) we had free time. We also made some trips in the other cities like Hastings, Canterbury or Isle of Wight. In free time we could do some acitvity, ehich prepared our activity leader – like bowling, laser games, barbecue, sporting etc. or we could do something on our own.

When i came back i was in Prague till the last week in holiday In these ten days i was with my boyfriend. We visited some exhibitions, we saw some films in cinema and because it was very hot weather we swam a lot. Than i worked in my mother’s law office for three weeks. In the last week of my holidays i was with my family in Rome. It was really terrible trip. When we came there first of all a false taxi-driver stole my grandparent’s bag with their passports, money, mobile phone, medicne, glasses. So we spend our first evening at police office. Next day my grandparents went to ambassy and everything was allright, they became new passports. But in Rome there are many thieves so man has to be very carefull. Every day someone tried to mainly in underground stole us something. Except this it was very nice. I saw many very important sights of Rome and I liked it.

Тема Московской области этого года: “The best holidays and festivals are those with specific traditions for celebrating”.

celebrate with old traditions/ … are celebrated by old traditions … 1,2 параграфы our world does not stand on one place, 5 параграф

the old traditions, 2 параграф (нет уточнения, какие именно)

… are popular with tourists who want to visit a country again and again,

tradition make any country is different …, 4 параграф

… the best holidays and festivals are not those which are celebrated ordinary …,

Орфография: “they long to try something knew“, 2 параграф

The others have an opposite opinion …__ and I can understand this point of view, 1

… they sing their national songs, do not dance as usual, but make cool tricks … 2 параграф (однородные члены, не нужна запятая)

As a result, events, which make people surprised… , are the best, 4

… events, which are celebrated by specific traditions,

Are there a vegetarian menu?

Лично для меня тема раскрыта, единственное место, где я не вижу логики в привидении примера к своем утверждению – 3-ий параграф с контраргументом: “They consider that unusual celebrations can be dangerous because people do not know what they should do there”. Для меня слово dangerous не расшифровывается как “people do not know what they should do there”.

… because ___ unusual way of spending your free time …,

Moreover, you can go with your friend which was there earlier …, 4 параграф (which вместо who, was вместо has been)

In conclusion, I would state that specific festivals are __ very exciting way of spending your free time,

Beach holiday ( sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkelling, parachuting, paragliding, taking part in different contests and competitions, . )

Sightseeing holiday (exploring historical places, archeological sites and ancient monuments; attending the local (or musical) festival; watching the ancient ceremony; taking part in different contests and competitions; attending the craft fair with stalls selling handmade crafts and local produce;. )

Camping holiday (relax in the peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside; freedom to travel easily and cheaply; great to be close to nature; it is exciting to spend your time outdoors; benefit from fishing; enjoy the scenery and attractions of the area; explore spectacular local areas; enjoy abundant wildlife;. )

  1. I’ve chosen photo number …
  2. where and when the photo was taken
  3. what/who is in the photo
  4. what is happening
  5. why you keep the photo in your album
  6. why you decided to show the picture to your friend
  7. I hope my friend will like this photo. That’s all I’ve got to say.

  1. I’ve chosen photo number (1-2-3).
  2. As you know, last year I spent my hol >abroad ). Let me show you the photo and tell you some words about it.
  3. — 4. I took a lot of photos those days, but this photo shows ( очень краткое описание фото, например: people (my family/. ) on the beach/a bear in the forest/underwater life/people (my mum and my sister/. ) on the platform/ the bridge/the festival/local food/fair/market/ и т.д. или просто: the place where I spent my last holidays ). As you know, last year my mum came upon an advertisement in a travel magazine for a holiday programme promising the chance of a lifetime. A little bit hesitant about taking such a lip into the unknown, we did some research and discovered that the programme involved:
1 ) not only sunbathing and swimming in the sea, but also exploring the local sightseeings and beautiful destinations as well as trying delicious local cuisine.
  • ( вариант 2 ) exploring historical places, attending the local festival, watching the ancient ceremony, taking part in different contests and competitions, attending the craft fair with stalls selling handmade crafts and local produce, as well as trying delicious local cuisine.
  • ( вариант 3 ) staying in a camp . (near the river/lake/in the forest) which offers the opportunity to relax in the peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside and enjoy breathtaking scenery and attractions of this wonderful area. More than that campers also benefit from different facilities available there.

After much discussion, we decided not to let such an intriguing opportunity pass us by and go for it. Being on a fairly tight budget, we opted for a package deal and soon set off for a holiday destination. As you can see in this photo . This photo shows. In this photo there are.

  • ( вариант 1 ) last year I was lucky to spend two weeks at the seaside. However, we were not only relaxing in the sunshine and swimming, but also we could do unique activities that I just wouldn’t have the chance to do at home such as scuba diving, snorkelling, parachuting and many others.
  • ( вариант 2 ) last year I was lucky to have a sightseeing holiday in (. )/abroad as it broadens my knowledge of people, places and cultures. Since I am particularly interested in ancient architecture, culture exploration on guided tours is a must for me. I think such type of holidays is educational as I can learn a lot about the history of the place, understand and experience traditions and customs of local people. Moreover, I tried to learn as much as I can their language. And, of course, I tried their cuisine.
  • ( вариант 3 ) last year I was lucky to stay in a camp as this is a holiday for nature-lovers and I was able not only to swim and fish, but also explore spectacular local areas, enjoy abundant wildlife which makes this place one of the most popular travel destinations for those who love the outdoors.

Unfortunately, time passed and our holiday trip ended as quickly as it had begun. And now, .

5. . I keep this photo in my album because I want to memorize one of the best days since this day and indeed the whole time we spent on the holiday programme have given us all a yearning for new experiences and many wonderful memories that we will cherish forever.

6. I decided to show this photo to you, my friend, to demonstrate how wonderful and exciting it can be to enjoy such a novel travel experience.

7. I hope you will like this photo.

8. That’s all I’ve got to say.

Travelling

1. People travelling long distances frequently have to decide whether they would prefer to go by land, sea, or air. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting on a train for more than a few hours. Train compartments soon get cramped and stuffy. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading is only a partial solution, for the monotonous rhythm of the wheels clicking on the rails soon lulls you to sleep. During the day, sleep comes in snatches. At night when you really wish to go to sleep, you rarely manage to do so. If you are lucky enough to get couchettes, you spend half the night staring at the small blue light in the ceiling or fumbling to find your passport when you cross a frontier. Inevitably you arrive at your destination almost exhausted.

2. Long car journeys are even less pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can at least travel fairly and safely at high speeds, but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent in narrow, bumpy roads which are crowded with traffic. By comparison, trips by sea offer a great variety of civilized comforts. You can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, play games, swim, meet interesting people and enjoy good food—always assuming of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get sea-sick, no form of transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea-journeys take a long time. Relatively few people are prepared to sacrifice up to a third of their holidays for the pleasure of travelling on a ship.

3. Aeroplanes have the reputation of being dangerous and even hardened travellers are intimidated by them. They also have the grave disadvantage of being the most expensive form of transport. But nothing can match them for speed and comfort. Travelling at a height of 30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an hour is an exhilarating experience. You do not have to devise ways of taking your mind off the journey, for an aeroplane gets you to your destination rapidly. For a few hours, you settle back in a deep armchair to enjoy the flight. The real escapist can watch a free film show and sip a hot or cold drink on some services. But even when such refreshments are not available, there is plenty to keep you occupied. An aeroplane offers you an unusual breathtaking view of the world. You soar effortlessly over high mountains and deep valleys. You really see the shape of the land. If the landscape is hidden from view, you can enjoy the extraordinary sight of unbroken clouds, plains that stretch out for miles before you, while the sun shines brilliantly in a clear sky. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. However you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: you will arrive at your destination fresh and uncrumpled. You will not have to spend the next few days recovering from a long and arduous journey.

1. Building materials
2. The longest on Earth
3. Safe travel
4. Designing a building
5. Invented by accident
6. Comfortable living
7. How did they do it?
8. Why seasons change
1. Building materials
2. The longest on Earth
3. Safe travel
4. Designing a building
5. Invented by accident
6. Comfortable living
7. How did they do it?
8. Why seasons change

Текст A

A. Most of Africa’s rural peoples use natural resources that are locally available for their homes. In grasslands, people typically use grass to cover the walls and roofs. In forested areas, they use hardwoods as well as bamboo and raffia palm. Earth and clay are also major resources used in construction. In areas with few natural resources, people often live as nomads, moving from place to place. Instead of making permanent homes, they usually use simple shelters or tents made of animal skins and woven hair.

B. An architect must consider how a structure will be used and by whom. An apartment building, a palace, a hospital, a museum, an airport, and a sports arena all have different construction requirements. Another factor is the ideas the structure should communicate. For example, some buildings are made to impress people with a display of power and wealth; othersto make everyone feel welcome. Other things to consider are the location and surrounding environment, including weather, and the cost of materials.

4Designing a building

C. Did you know that an eleven-year-old child first created the Popsicle? The boy’s name was Frank Epperson. In 1905, Frank left a mixture of water and powdered soda out on his porch by mistake. It also contained a stir stick. That night, fortunately for Frank, the temperatures fell to a record low. As a result, he discovered the substance had frozen to the stick, and a frozen fruit flavoured ice treat was created. He decided to call it the epsicle, which was later patented by him and named as Popsicle.

5 Invented by accident

Тексты D, E

D. As Earth goes around the sun, the North Pole points to the same direction in space. For about six months every year, the North Pole is tilted towards the sun. During this time, the Northern Hemisphere gets more direct sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere and more hours of daylight. During the other six months, the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. When the Northern Hemisphere gets the most sunlight, it experiences spring and summer. At the same time, the Southern Hemisphere gets autumn and winter.

E. In southern Peru, there is an isolated plateau where the wind almost never blows. Here, around the year 400 to 650 AD, the people of the Nazca culture created the famous Nazca lines, by removing the red stones covering the ground so that the white earth beneath was visible. These Nazca lines are actually portraits of animals such as monkeys, birds or fish. It is a mystery how such a primitive civilization could create such artwork with precision when they had no means of viewing their work from the air.

F. Antarctica, which is the southernmost and fifth largest continent, does not have twenty-four-hour periods divided into days and nights. In the South Pole, the sun rises on about September 21 and moves in a circular path until it sets on about March 22. This “day”, or summer, is six months long. During this period, if the weather conditions are good, the sun can be seen twenty-four hours a day. From March 22 until September 21, the South Pole is dark, and Antarctica has its “night”, or winter.

G. Any ship that hits an iceberg can be damaged. The most famous iceberg in history sank the “Titanic”, a ship travelling in the northern Atlantic Ocean, on April 15, 1912. The ship’s side scraped the iceberg, which tore holes in the hull. Within three hours, the ship was at the bottom of the ocean. After the loss of the “Titanic”, several nations worked together to establish the International Ice Patrol. Today the U.S. Coast Guard runs the patrol, which warns ships about icebergs floating in Atlantic shipping routes.

One day last summer, around noon, I called Athena, a 13-year-old who lives in Houston, Texas. She answered her phoneshe has had an iPhone since she was 11sounding as if she’d just woken up. We chatted about her favorite songs and TV shows, and I asked her what she likes to do with her friends. “We go to the mall,” she said. “Do your parents drop you off?” I asked, recalling my own middle-school days, in the 1980s, when I’d enjoy a few parent-free hours shopping with my friends. “No, I go with my family,” she replied. “We’ll go with my mom and brothers and walk a little behind them. I just have to tell my mom where we are going. I have to check in every hour or every 30 minutes.”

12. According to the author, in her childhood she used to

watch TV a lot

go to the mall with her family

call her mother every half an hour

do the shopping with her friends

Вспоминая о своем детстве в 1980-х автор говорит: when I’d enjoy a few parent-free hours shopping with my friends.
Ответ: do the shopping with her friends

Those mall trips are infrequentabout once a month. More often, Athena and her friends spend time together on their phones, unchaperoned. Unlike the teens of my generation, who might have spent an evening tying up the family landline with gossip, they talk on Snapchat, a smartphone app that allows users to send pictures and videos that quickly disappear. They make sure to keep up their Snapstreaks, which show how many days in a row they have Snapchatted with each other. She told me she had spent most of the summer hanging out alone in her room with her phone. That is just the way her generation is, she said. “We didn’t know any life other than with iPads or iPhones. I think we like our phones more than we like actual people.”

13. Which of the following does Athena do monthly?

#2

14. For Athena’s peers spending time alone in their rooms seems…

difficult

natural

awkward

soothing

That is just the way her generation is.

Some generational changes are positive, some are negative, and many are both. More comfortable in their bedrooms than in a car or at a party, today’s teens are physically safer than teens have ever been. They are markedly less likely to get into a car accident and, having less of a taste for alcohol than their predecessors, are less susceptible to drinking’s attendant ills.
Psychologically, however, they are more vulnerable than Millennials were: rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It is not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones.

15. Which of the following is NOT true about iGen teenagers, according to the author?

Most of them feel extremely unhappy

They have more physical health problems

It is easy to hurt them psychologically

They prefer loneliness to company

По мнению рассказчицы today’s teens are physically safer.
They have more physical health problems

However, in my conversations with teens, I saw hopeful signs that kids themselves are beginning to link some of their troubles to their ever-present phones. Athena told me that when she does spend time with her friends in person, they are often looking at their devices instead of at her. “I’m trying to talk to them about something, and they don’t actually look at my face,” she said. “They’re looking at their phone, or they’re looking at their Apple Watch.” “What does that feel like, when you’re trying to talk to somebody face-to-face and they’re not looking at you?” I asked. “It kind of hurts,” she said. “It hurts. I know my parents’ generation didn’t do that. I could be talking about something super important to me, and they wouldn’t even be listening.”

16. «That» in “I know my parents’ generation didn’t do that” refers to…

discussing their problems

behaving in a mean way

being glued to their phones

listening attentively to friends

Ответ: being glued to their phones

Once, she told me, she was hanging out with a friend who was texting her boyfriend. “I was trying to talk to her about my family, and what was going on, and she was like, ”Uh-huh, yeah, whatever.” So I took her phone out of her hands and I threw it at the wall.”
Though it is aggressive behavior that I don’t support, on the other handit is a step towards a life with limited phone use. So, if I were going to give advice for happy adolescence, it would be straightforward: put down the phone, turn off the laptop, and do somethinganythingthat does not involve a screen.

#1

17. The fact that Athena threw away her friend’s phone proves that…

smartphones can cause mental health problems

teenagers know the problems caused by phones

her friend thought she was doing the right thing

smartphones make teenagers more aggressive

Ответ: teenagers know the problems caused by phones

#2

18. What does the author suggest in her article?

Smartphones cause violent behavior

Smartphones are not safe

There are good and bad sides in using smartphones

Phone use by young people should be limited

Phone use by young people should be limited
