Что, если вместо IELTS и TOEFL можно сдать часовой онлайн-тест и получить так международный сертификат в два раза дешевле? Sounds like a trap (звучит как ловушка). На самом деле речь о Duolingo English Test, который котируется во многих зарубежных университетах. Автор Skyeng Magazine Арина Бойко уже получила свой сертификат и рассказала нам, из чего состоит экзамен, чем он отличается от привычных IELTS и TOEFL и как к нему подготовиться.

Duolingo English Test — это онлайн-экзамен по английскому, который определяет уровень владения языком. По итогу теста вы получаете официальный сертификат, который можно использовать при поступлении в университет или указывать в деловом резюме.

Максимально вы можете набрать 160 баллов. Результат разбит по четырем показателям: Literacy (способность читать и писать), Comprehension (способность читать и воспринимать информацию на слух), Conversation (способность слушать и говорить) и Production (способность писать и говорить).

В тесте есть десять типов заданий, большинство из них — смешанные. Это значит, что в них проверяют не только ваше умение понимать письменный текст, но и разнообразие вашей лексики и знания грамматики.

Необычно, что Duolingo English Test адаптируется под вас прямо во время экзамена. Сложность заданий напрямую зависит от того, как вы справляетесь с тестом: если вы отвечаете на все вопросы правильно, алгоритм Duolingo дает задания посложнее, и наоборот.

Тест занимает около часа. С одной стороны, это удобно, но с другой, на каждое задание дается ограниченное количество времени: 30 секунд — если нужно назвать слово, около 20 минут — чтобы написать небольшое эссе. Скорость теста тоже важная часть его внутренней механики: он проверяет, насколько быстро вы способны реагировать на другом языке.

Для сдачи теста нужен компьютер с устойчивым интернетом, а также тихая комната, где вы будете совсем одни. Наушники использовать нельзя — только встроенные в компьютер динамик и микрофон.

1. Он дешевле и быстрее — тест сейчас стоит 49 долларов (около 3500 рублей) и занимает около часа. Для сравнения, цена IELTS и TOEFL составляет не меньше 200 долларов (около 15 000 рублей) — точная сумма зависит от формата теста и от региона сдачи. А чтобы их пройти, понадобится около пяти часов. Результат Duolingo тоже приходит быстрее — всего через двое суток после экзамена. Это очень удобно, если поджимает время подачи заявки в университет.
2. Задания могут показаться непривычными. Здесь вас не попросят «прочитать текст и ответить на вопросы» или «прослушать диалог и ответить на вопросы», как в IELTS и TOEFL. Задания в Duolingo намного динамичнее и короче: «запишите услышанную фразу», «опишите фотографию». Они требуют не столько аналитических способностей и умения выбирать нужную информацию, сколько высокой концентрации и быстрой реакции.
3. Результаты сложно оценить и перевести в привычную шкалу. В разбалловке Duolingo используются специфические для теста показатели: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation и Production (а не стандартные для IELTS и TOEFL Reading, Listening, Speaking и Writing). Официальной шкалы для перевода баллов Duolingo в их эквиваленты по стандартам IELTS и TOEFL еще не существует, поэтому лучше узнавать в конкретном университете, принимает ли он сертификат Duolingo и какой минимальный балл необходим. На официальном сайте теста также есть поиск по университетам, которые принимают этот сертификат.

Шаг 1. Зарегистрируйтесь на официальном сайте и пройдите бесплатный Practice Test. Он нужен, чтобы познакомиться с тестом, типами заданий, привыкнуть к интерфейсу и немного освоиться. Для это я еще посмотрела несколько видео-обзоров на тест, например, вот этот на канале «This is Yulia».

Шаг 2. Проанализируйте результаты своего Practice Test. Отметьте, какие задания для вас оказались наиболее сложными, чему стоит уделить особое внимание: лексике, устному описанию картинок, восприятию аудио или письменным заданиям.

Шаг 3. Поработайте над вашими слабыми сторонами. Я, например, чувствовала самую большую неуверенность в вопросах, где нужно определять, какие слова действительно существуют в английском. Я сделала скриншот всех заданий этого типа из Practice Test, чтобы перевести и выучить каждое — слова в Duolingo часто повторяются. Если у вас наибольшую сложность вызвали описания картинок, вы можете потренироваться описывать любые изображения на английском языке, сначала в спокойной обстановке, а потом — на скорость.

Шаг 4. Регулярно практикуйтесь. Например, это можно делать с помощью видео на ютубе. Так как тест новый, по нему почти нет учебников (мне удалось найти всего два и те не с лучшими отзывами на Amazon), поэтому я выполняла задания из видео на каналах Teacher Sally, Oxford Language Center и Hetal’s Cornerstore.

Шаг 5. Посвятите достаточно времени подготовке к тесту — от недели до нескольких месяцев. Я готовила к сдаче теста около месяца: за это время я почувствовала себя достаточно уверенно, чтобы наконец нажать кнопку «Take the Test».

Шаг 6. Перед тестом подготовьте свое рабочее место: будьте готовы, что Duolingo попросит вас показать комнату по веб-камере.

Предупредите всех, с кем вы живете, что к вам в комнату нельзя заходить — с этим у Duolingo очень строго.

Шаг 7. Садясь за тест, приготовьте паспорт и уберите подальше телефон, предварительно поставив его на беззвучный режим. Внимательно прочитайте инструкцию Duolingo в начале самого теста — для вас еще раз повторят все правила и ключевые моменты.

Я сдавала тест летом 2020 года и больше всего в нем меня пугала невозможность подготовиться — учебных материалов в интернете почти не было, книг и учебников, которые можно скачать, тоже. Поэтому я смотрела все попадавшиеся мне по теме видео на ютубе, читала комментарии под ними и сама придумывала себе похожие задания. Например, вслух называла на английском находящиеся вокруг меня предметы.

Сам тест сразу показался мне проще, чем TOEFL или IELTS, которые я сдавала несколько лет назад, так как он не так утомителен и не требует такой концентрации. Например, в TOEFL только «Чтение» длится около полутора часов, а мне сложно так долго фокусироваться на тексте, особенно если он научный. В Duolingo все задания поданы в игровом формате, напоминают квизы или кроссворды на время.

Когда я проходила тест в первый раз, то очень разволновалась и случайно нарушила правила: я перевела мышку к краю экрана, чтобы посмотреть время на компьютере и система выкинула меня из теста. Хорошо, что мне разрешили пройти тест еще раз и не аннулировали оплату. Моя первая неудачная попытка стала для меня чем-то вроде развернутой версии Practice Test. Кажется, количество таких проб ограничено — больше я не рисковала.

IELTS и TOEFL по-прежнему можно сдать студентам из России, но для этого придется устроить целое путешествие в Казахстан, Азербайджан и другие страны, в которых можно пройти тестирование. Однако есть альтернативный способ подтвердить свои знания языка — экзамен Duolingo. Из чего он состоит, как его сдать и какие вузы принимают результаты — в нашей статье.

Duolingo English Test — это еще один экзамен по английскому, который помогает подтвердить уровень языка. Он проходит в онлайн-формате и длится 1 час. У него есть несколько плюсов:

• Быстро. Результаты известны в течение 2 дней.
• Доступно много вузов. Сертификат принимают 3500 вузов по всему миру. В том числе и университеты Лиги Плюща.
• Низкая цена. Сдать экзамен стоит всего 49 USD, в то время как IELTS и TOEFL — 120-200 USD.
• Можно сдать онлайн из любой точки. Не нужно записываться в центр, а в случае с Россией — ехать в другую страну.

Структура экзамен Duolingo

Duolingo English test состоит из:

• подготовкизнакомство с правилами теста и загрузка удостоверения личности — 5 минут;
• адаптивного теста — 45 минут;
• письменной работы и видеоинтервью — 10 минут.

Адаптивный тест

Адаптивное тестирование включает разные типы вопросов, которые выбираются случайным образом и подстраиваются индивидуально под каждого студента. Вы не знаете, какой будет следующим и сколько еще впереди. Нет фиксированного количества вопросов — тест заканчивается, когда механизм оценивания точно определил ваш результат.

Вопросы делятся на категории Comprehension, Conversation, Literacy, и Production. Также у них есть ограничения по времени.

Письменная часть

В письменной части вы должны написать текст на предложенную тему. На выполнение дается от 3 до 5 минут.

Чтобы прочитать и обдумать задание, у вас будет 30 секунд.

Видеоинтервью

То же самое только в устном формате вам нужно будет сделать на видеоинтервью. Вам дают тему, и ваша задача в течение 1-3 минут поделиться своим мнением. У вас также будет 30 секунд на изучение и подготовку.

Результаты

Результаты оцениваются по шкале от 10 до 160. Каждый сертификат доступен по уникальной защищенной ссылке. Результат включает общее описание и баллы по категориям. Это оценка конкретных навыков, таких как:

• чтение и письмо,
• восприятие на слух и чтение,
• устная речь и понимание на слух,
• письмо и говорение.

Как баллы Duolingo соотносятся с IELTS и TOEFL можно посмотреть на официальном сайте. Так, эквивалент 6.0 по IELTS — это 105-115 баллов в Duolingo Test.

Почему абитуриенты все-таки отдают предпочтение классике — IELTS и TOEFL

Главная причина — это ограниченный выбор вузов. Большинство учреждений, которые принимают Duolingo — это частные университеты и филиалы, которые не всем подходят. Зато доступны топовые университеты США и Великобритании — Columbia University, Stanford, Cornell University, University of Reading, Imperial College London, LSE и другие.

Duolingo English Test — еще совсем «зеленый» экзамен, который намного младше IELTS и TOEFL. В языковых школах нет программ подготовки к нему. Поэтому студентам приходится самостоятельно тренироваться и решать пробные версии теста.

И наконец, у экзамена довольно непривычная структура. Нет единой последовательности вопросов, а их количество не определено. Студенты настороженно относятся к такому формату и переживают, что начнут нервничать из-за неопределённости.

Несмотря на эти недостатки сдавать Duolingo English Test все-таки стоит. Этот экзамен подойдет тем, кто рассматривает частный вуз, филиал или один из топов США и Великобритании, а также тем, кто может сам организовать свою подготовку. Ведь несмотря на особенности, чтобы его сдать, не нужно никуда ехать. А бонусом идет его низкая стоимость по сравнению с другими языковыми экзаменами.
