Восемь претендентов пытаются получить работу своей мечты, но вакансия всего одна. На пути к заветной должности они уже преодолели массу испытаний, им осталось пройти последний экзамен. Он проводится в изолированной комнате под присмотром камер и молчаливого вооружённого охранника. Каждый претендент сидит за отдельным столом, на котором лежат лишь карандаш и лист бумаги с надписью «Кандидат» и порядковым номером. Суровый «Наблюдатель» оглашает задание: чтобы получить работу мечты, нужно за отведённые 80 минут ответить на один единственный вопрос. В течение этого времени в комнате не действуют никакие законы и правила, кроме тех, что устанавливает компания. Правила гласят, что для дисквалификации нужно обратиться к охраннику или Наблюдателю, испортить лист или покинуть комнату. После фразы «Вопросы есть?» Наблюдатель включает часы и покидает комнату. 

Все напряженно смотрят свои листы, думают примерно десять минут, не понимая сути задания, затем одна из девушек начинает что-то писать на бумаге и попадает под дисквалификацию. Оставшиеся решают обозвать друг друга кличками: «Белый», «Черный», «Загорелый», «Блондинка», «Брюнетка» и т. д. После того начинают поиск вопроса, на который нужно дать ответ. Поиск идет сперва перебором вариантов, затем методом дедукции. В ходе поиска кандидаты переживают состояние стресса и взаимных параной. Они осматривают комнату и сначала пытаются поиграть с освещением, затем намочить листы, вызвав пожарную сигнализацию, «Белый» выбивает из игры «Молчаливого» скармливая тому его собственный лист. Затем доминирующий по сюжету «Белый» доходит до мысли, что нужно просто убрать всех конкурентов из комнаты последовательно любым доступным способом и тогда он последний, оставшийся получит заветную работу. Комната превращается в ринг борьбы за выживание людей в замкнутом пространстве. В итоге «Белый» терпит крах, а разгадка ответа на вопрос Наблюдателя все время была у испытуемых перед глазами.  

Фильм превосходный психологический триллер на тему поведения людей в экстремальных условиях. Здесь у каждого из семи кандидатов проявляются все черты характера от благородства, до самых низменных и отвратительных желаний. Финал предсказать практически невозможно. Происходит столкновение душ и интеллектов. Сам финал дан в классической схеме «Пилы», когда на экране множество мелких событий, показанных зрителю на протяжении  всего фильма (реплики персонажей, мелкие детали и прочее) сами по себе собираются в единую мозаику и выдают готовый ответ. 

Параллельной темой является политика и методы корпорации, заставляющей людей проходить подобные «экзамены». 

Вывод: очень неплохой качественный триллер, существенно сильнее чем «Куб» и нашего «Лифта», но слабее чем первая «Пила» или «Философы, игра на выживание».

Each desk has a paper printed with the word «candidate» and a number from one to eight. The Invigilator explains that they have 80 minutes to answer one question, but there are three rules: the candidates must not spoil their paper, leave the room, or talk to him or the armed guard at the door. If they do, they will be disqualified. The Invigilator asks them if they have any questions, then leaves.

As the exam starts, it turns out that the papers are otherwise blank. Within minutes, an Asian candidate is disqualified for spoiling her paper by writing on it. The seven remaining candidates realize it is permissible to talk to each other and collaborate. One candidate, «White», assigns nicknames to each candidate based on hair color and skin color: Black, Blonde, Brown, Brunette, Dark, and Deaf (for one candidate who does not speak or respond to the group).

In the hour that follows, the candidates use lights, bodily fluids, and fire sprinklers in attempts to reveal hidden text on their papers, to no avail. They speculate on the exam’s purpose and the nature of the company. Dark claims that the CEO is highly secretive and has not been seen since the initial public offering. It is gradually revealed that the company is responsible for a miracle drug designed to treat a condition afflicting a large part of the population due to a viral pandemic. In the chaos, White takes control of the group and engineers the disqualifications of Brunette and Deaf for spoiled papers.

White also begins taunting the others, saying he has figured out the question but will not tell them. In response, Black knocks White unconscious and ties him to a chair. As White passes out, he pleads for his medication, implying he has the virus. Brown turns his attention to Dark, who demonstrates knowledge of the company’s internal workings, and tortures her into revealing that she works for the company. It is revealed that Black is a carrier of the disease. White goes into convulsions, proving he has the disease. Dark pleads to the Invigilator for help and is disqualified.

Blonde retrieves White’s medication, which was stolen from him earlier by Brown, and uses it to revive him. The others release White and demand to know the question. White suggests that there is no question and the company will simply hire the last remaining candidate. Black steals the guard’s gun, but it requires the guard’s fingerprint to fire, giving White time to retrieve it. By forcing the guard’s hand into the trigger, White coerces Brown to leave the room, disqualifying him. As Blonde also exits, she turns off the voice-activated lights, allowing Black to attack White.

The lights come back on after Black is hit by a gunshot. Blonde hides in the hallway, still holding one foot inside the room. Before White can kill her, the exam timer runs to zero. White addresses the Invigilator, sure of his success, but is disqualified. It is revealed that Deaf had earlier removed a few minutes from the countdown clock. Blonde remembers that Deaf had been using glasses and a piece of broken glass with an exam paper earlier. Taking the abandoned glasses, she finds the phrase «Question 1.» on the exam paper in minuscule writing. Blonde realizes that Question 1 refers to the only question asked of the group by the Invigilator at the beginning of the test («Any questions?»). Blonde answers «No.»

The Invigilator enters and reveals that Deaf is the CEO of the company. He found the virus cure but also discovered a method of rapid cell regeneration capable of providing «the gift of life». The bullet that hit Black contained this cure, reviving him. With high demand for the drug and a limited supply, the company needed an administrator capable of making tough decisions with attention to detail while showing compassion, all traits that Blonde displayed during the exam. Blonde accepts the job.

After seeing some of his friends’ films fail due to studio interference, Stuart Hazeldine decided that he wanted full control over his feature debut.^[6] The original story involved an exam at a school, but Stuart Hazeldine changed it to be a job interview. The ending is also Hazeldine’s creation, as the original story didn’t have one. Hazeldine wanted to separate the characters by race, culture, gender, and, especially, worldview.^[7] The film’s pandemic was influenced by contemporary fears of bird flu and distrust of pharmaceutical companies. Originally, the script had more science fiction elements, but Hazeldine stripped them out to keep the film grounded. About the twist ending, Hazeldine said he wanted the film to be about more than just the twist, and he tried to appeal to audiences who seek a story about human nature.^[6]

The film premiered in June 2009 as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival^[1] and was then part of the Raindance Film Festival 2009.^[8] It was released in UK cinemas on 8 January 2010.^[2]

On 11 February 2010, IFC Films acquired the rights for the US release, where it was released as part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.^[9] The DVD and Blu-ray were released in the UK on 7 June 2010.^[10] There was no theatrical release in the US, but IFC Films released the film via video on demand on 23 July 2010^[11] and on DVD on 16 November 2010.^[12]

On 4 September 2012, a stage adaptation of the film opened in Manchester.^[13]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of 30 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10.^[14]
Tim Robey of The Telegraph said that the film starts off well but loses its way.^[15] Lael Loewenstein of Variety called it «a smartly conceived, tautly executed psychological thriller.»^[9] Philip French of The Guardian called the film clever and «ingeniously developed» but criticised the ending as disappointing.^[16] Also writing in the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw gave the film two out of five stars and said the film does not live up to its intriguing premise.^[17] Awarding the film four out of five stars, Total Film compared the film to Cube and the work of Jean-Paul Sartre.^[18] Becky Reed of Screen Geek compared it to 12 Angry Men and El Método (The Method), a 2005 Spanish film.^[19]

Дошли руки посмотреть фильм «Экзамен».
Если коротко — интересен он только одним — все съемки выполнены в одном помещении.
Ход редкий и заслуживающий одобрения. Ибо главным делает содержание, а не картинку.

Что касается самого этого содержания, то здесь сложнее.
Имеющиеся в фильме претензии на что-то сверхсерьезное и психологичное, считаю необоснованными.

Т.е., смотреть любопытно, но откровения не ждешь и не обнаруживаешь.

Сюжет: некая фирма ведет набор персонала.
Сквозь сито предварительного отбора прошло восемь человек, которым предстоит последнее испытание.
Они собраны в одну комнату. У выхода из которой стоит вооруженный охранник.

Им поставлена задача — в течение 80 минут дать ответ. Но не ясен вопрос. На розданных участникам экзамена листах бумаги ничего не написано.
Устно вопрос также не прозвучал.
Условия экзамена — в разговоры с представителем фирмы и охранником не вступать — выданный лист бумаги нельзя портить, из комнаты не выходить.
Каждое их этих действий влечет дисквалификацию.

Одна из участниц начинает писать на листе — и ее сразу выводят, поскольку она испортила лист.

Остальные некоторое время пребывают в растерянности — ибо время идет, а вопрос-то не известен. Никто не может его обнаружить.

Постепенно участники выясняют неоглашенные «правила» — можно вставать, разговаривать и делать все что угодно кроме явно озвученных запретов.

Они объединяют усилия для выяснения задания-вопроса.
Версии разные — от невидимых чернил, которыми он написан, до «философских» умозаключений о «взгляде в себя», «мы все и есть вопрос и ответ» и проч.

Сотрудничество оказалось недолгим и сменилось подставами и выкидыванием «слабых» звеньев, а также стрельбой и даже «убийством».
Кавычки стоят потому, что пули оказались целебными(!)…

Вообщем, никто не умер.

В финале остается одна героиня — которая догадалась как прочитать вопрос и интерпретировать сказанное в начале экзамена.

Она и оказывается «победителем».

И вроде как мы должны удовлетворенно выдохнуть — надо же, вот она — межличностная борьба. Столь близкая офисному планктону.
Каждый демонстрирует свои истинные качества.
Несмотря на лоск костюмов и «цивилизованность», герои могут подставлять, провоцировать, пытать, наблюдать за умирающим товарищем.
Могут и до убийства дойти.

Вроде все «внушает».

Но после небольшой паузы, начинаешь анализировать просмотренное.
И понимаешь, что никакой глубины в фильме, к сожалению, нет.
Ибо нет никакой реальности в сюжете.

Да и выводы, к которым подталкивают зрителя — банальны.
То, что в сегодняшнем обществе царствует закон джунглей — разве это новость ?

В свою очередь, «победитель» также не является примером обратного поведения.
Она вовсе не борец со злом. Стояла в стороне, пока остальные «грызли» друг другу горло.
Никаких преодолений себя, нравственных сцен, ничего. Или теперь и это уже доблесть ?

Но не в этом даже дело.
Нюанс сюжета состоит еще в том, что во время экзамена одним из восьми был президент компании-работодателя.
Кстати, что он там делал ? Не мог наблюдать по монитору, если так интересно ?
Ну да ладно…
Человек не от мира сего. Витающий в иной реальности гений.
Посвятивший свою работу поискам некого сверхлекарства. Излечивающего и продлевающего жизнь и т.д.

И вот на глазах у этого «святого» человека происходит то что происходит.
На мой взгляд, по итогам все участники должны были бы быть изгнаны с позором.
А учитывая, что эти люди — прошедшие отбор, то можно представить «исходный материал».

Как с таким президентом компании в отборе участвуют подобные люди — неизвестно совершенно.
Каковы должны были быть цели конкурса ?
Надуманность абсолютная.

Как и то, что в «финал» прошли очень и очень странные персонажи.
Естественность такого результата допустить сложно.
А его искусственность не имеет объяснения. Зачем все ЭТО ?

Что сказать в качестве вывода ? Фильм на один раз. Если нечем занять время, посмотреть вполне можно.
В напряжении держит.
Но не более того. Не стоит всерьез вдумываться и анализировать.
Фильм слишком надуман и не имеет никаких стоящих мыслей.
Но как действие — вполне пойдет. Этакое реалити-шоу.
