Шикарная психологическая головоломка для тех, кто любит кормить свой мозг изощренными деликатесами. Удивительно, но этот напряженный, выверенный и практически безупречный триллер стал для режиссера Стюарта Хэзелдайна дебютом в полнометражном кино. Восемь кандидатов на одну вакансию в штат крупнейшей корпорации, стать частью которой мечтает каждый. Все они уже прошли сложнейший отбор, и теперь от долгожданной победы их отделяет всего один шаг — финальное собеседование. Но его не будет. Вместо приватной беседы по душам, все они получают белый лист и карандаш. Задание: максимально точно ответить на единственный вопрос. Покидать комнату нельзя. Обращаться с вопросами к охраннику нельзя. Испорченный лист – автоматическое выбывание из игры. Но главная интрига в том, что объяснив правила, представитель корпорации предоставил героев самим себе, не задав вопроса. Восемь кандидатов приглашают на заключительный этап собеседования на должность в фармацевтическую корпорацию. Наблюдатель оглашает правила теста – нельзя покидать комнату, нельзя обращаться к нему или охраннику, нельзя портить свой бланк. Во время экзамена претендентам необходимо ответить всего на один вопрос.
Кандидаты переворачивают свои листы, но они абсолютно чистые. Девушка восточной внешности начинает писать: « Я считаю, что достойна…» Но охранник дисквалифицирует претендентку, так как она испортила свой лист.
В недоумении остальные экзаменуемые решают выяснить вопрос совместно. Белый молодой парень выступает в качестве лидера группы и дает всем прозвища.
У кандидатов возникают разные варианты, как проявить текст на листах, однако ни один из способов не дает результатов.
В ходе попыток Белый подставляет девушку «Брюнетку» и мужчину по прозвищу «Глухой», и их дисквалифицируют. Выясняется, что каждый из присутствующих имеет свой личный интерес к работе в компании и готов на все.
Черный решает связать Белого, так как он ведет нечестную игру, однако у того начинаются конвульсии из-за болезни. Шатенка обращается к охраннику с просьбой о помощи, но ее удаляют из класса.
Конкуренция накаляется и каждый из кандидатов уже используют физическую силу, чтобы в конце остался всего один. В результате Белый вынуждает покинуть комнату Смуглого и Блондинку и выстреливает из ружья охранника в Черного.
Белый обращается к Наблюдателю, чувствуя себя победителям, однако и его выводят. Прошедшей экзамен становится Блондинка, которая на самом деле не покинула кабинет и разгадала вопрос, прозвучавший в последней фразе наблюдателя: «Вопросы есть?»
Владельцем компании оказывается Глухой, и Блондинка принимает предложение о работе.

Вот это желание устроиться на работу в конкретную фирму! Причем не у одного человека, а сразу у восьмерых. Да и то показаны лишь конкретные герои фильма, тогда как, по словам представителя компании, сюда стремилось попасть намного больше народу. В итоге все трудные испытания (какие — останется за кадром) прошла лишь «великолепная (омерзительная?) восьмерка». Остался последний рубеж. Нужно в окружении своих соперников — кандидатов на вакантную должность в течение восьмидесяти минут ответить на вопрос, который… не задан! Необходимо самому понять, что хочет от тебя работодатель, и проявить себя соответственно. Нельзя выходить из «испытательной комнаты», нельзя обращаться к руководству, дистанционно наблюдающему за тобой, и говорить с оставшимся в «классе» охранником, у которого, кстати, пистолет. Нельзя портить лежащий на столе листок, где напечатано лишь слово «кандидат» с порядковым номером. А что же делать? Пусть сообразит сильнейший!
В первую очередь следует обозначить целевую аудиторию «Экзамена». По визуалу это однозначно не «Пила» и не «Эксперимент «Офис»», где люди в замкнутом пространстве будут заниматься жестким взаимным кровопусканием или их станет резать «внешний» беспощадный злодей. Британская картина достаточно интеллигентная, доминирующе психологичная, хотя и с парой-тройкой «острых» во всех смыслах моментов, суть которых не стоит раскрывать. Фактически перед нами высококультурные люди, пришедшие устраиваться в корпорацию с колоссальными возможностями, где по идее нет места мелочным и аморальным секретам, ущемляющим человеческое достоинство. Пусть групповое испытание необычно по форме и туманно по содержанию, но не может же оно угрожать соискателям? Тем более, что в любой момент каждый волен покинуть помещение — навсегда, без возможности «пересдачи». Но, с другой стороны, это ведь всего лишь работа. Не сложится с этой, найдется другая. Правда, нынешние претенденты действительно особенные. Никто из них не собирается отступать и костьми ляжет ради заветной должности. Естественно, последнее — лишь фигура речи… или нет?
Если говорить о жизненном восприятии «Экзамена», то предпосылка разыгрываемой ситуации кажется странной. Кандидаты крайне смутно представляют, что за работа их ждет, руководствуясь лишь тем, что это «очень крутая компания». В России можно провести аналогию с условным «Газпромом» или «Яндексом», когда бренд сам по себе обладает непреодолимой притягательностью и внушает железное убеждение, что «уж там-то бабла платят немерено!». Просто действительно непонятно, откуда такое изначальное рвение попасть в фирму, пусть по мере развития истории и раскрываются отдельные секреты конкретных персонажей. Фактически самое увлекательное в фабуле то, что люди в комнате не совсем случайные и не совсем равны как по отношению друг к другу, так и в своих шансах на победу. Но все равно (и развязка это подтвердит) они борются за «кота в мешке», рискуя при этом, как окажется, не только «отказом работодателя».
Вообще идея «стрессового группового собеседования», где соискатели общаются не с потенциальным боссом, а друг с другом, интересна доведением до крайности, когда людям в комнате разрешено все, кроме вышеобозначенных ограничений, означающих однозначный проигрыш. И если поначалу герои фактически играют в «Что? Где? Когда?», то с приближением дедлайна все больше начинают перемещаться в плоскость «бойцовского клуба». Ситуация накаляется, и поведение «культурных» людей удивительным образом меняется: в конце-то концов не умрет же человек, если я его напугаю, а еще ударю, а потом поистязаю, ну совсем чуть-чуть? Да, итог сродни «Стэнфордскому тюремному эксперименту» с той лишь разницей, что здесь никто не придет на помощь, даже при более чем реальной угрозе жизни кого-нибудь из участников. В конце концов вы сами сюда пришли, зная, что «за просто так большие деньги не платят» и следует быть готовым к существенным трудностям ради будущего благополучия.
Что еще примечательно, «Экзамен» — не «угадайка» для публики, когда отдельные зрители смотрят кино ради того, чтобы обо всем догадаться раньше героев. Развязка практически нечитаема в силу ее замудренности и, откровенно говоря, искусственности. Финал — самая слабая часть этого бесспорно сильного фильма, где действительно интересно наблюдать за невольными «игроками», постепенно «снимающими маски», за которыми скрыты как их худшие, так и лучшие черты. И до конца поддерживается интрига: нужен ли компании самый сильный, беспринципный и безжалостный — или, наоборот, требуется практически «святой», никогда не отступающий от высоких моральных принципов. Истина, как всегда, окажется «где-то рядом», но не ждите от нее художественных откровений. Главное, что было интересно все девяносто минут хронометража и фильм не зря считается современной классикой камерного триллера. Он остается в памяти не благодаря «финальному твисту», а за счет крутых словесных баталий, порой выходяших за разговорно-бесконтактные рамки. Причем, если абстрагироваться от спорной концовки, главный посыл истории — не привычное «человек человеку волк», а, наоборот, воспевание «прекрасных порывов» людской души, которые могут быть выше циничных амбиций и страха смерти.

Eight candidates dress for an employment assessment exam at the company DATAPREV. The group enters a room and sits at individual desks. Each desk has a paper printed with the word «candidate» and a number from one to eight. The Invigilator explains that they have 80 minutes to answer one question, but there are three rules: the candidates must not spoil their paper, leave the room, or talk to him or the armed guard at the door. If they do, they will be disqualified. The Invigilator asks them if they have any questions, then leaves.
As the exam starts, it turns out that the papers are otherwise blank. Within minutes, an Asian candidate is disqualified for spoiling her paper by writing on it. The seven remaining candidates realize it is permissible to talk to each other and collaborate. One candidate, «White», assigns nicknames to each candidate based on hair color and skin color: Black, Blonde, Brown, Brunette, Dark, and Deaf (for one candidate who does not speak or respond to the group).
In the hour that follows, the candidates use lights, bodily fluids, and fire sprinklers in attempts to reveal hidden text on their papers, to no avail. They speculate on the exam’s purpose and the nature of the company. Dark claims that the CEO is highly secretive and has not been seen since the initial public offering. It is gradually revealed that the company is responsible for a miracle drug designed to treat a condition afflicting a large part of the population due to a viral pandemic. In the chaos, White takes control of the group and engineers the disqualifications of Brunette and Deaf for spoiled papers.
White also begins taunting the others, saying he has figured out the question but will not tell them. In response, Black knocks White unconscious and ties him to a chair. As White passes out, he pleads for his medication, implying he has the virus. Brown turns his attention to Dark, who demonstrates knowledge of the company’s internal workings, and tortures her into revealing that she works for the company. It is revealed that Black is a carrier of the disease. White goes into convulsions, proving he has the disease. Dark pleads to the Invigilator for help and is disqualified.
Blonde retrieves White’s medication, which was stolen from him earlier by Brown, and uses it to revive him. The others release White and demand to know the question. White suggests that there is no question and the company will simply hire the last remaining candidate. Black steals the guard’s gun, but it requires the guard’s fingerprint to fire, giving White time to retrieve it. By forcing the guard’s hand into the trigger, White coerces Brown to leave the room, disqualifying him. As Blonde also exits, she turns off the voice-activated lights, allowing Black to attack White.
The lights come back on after Black is hit by a gunshot. Blonde hides in the hallway, still holding one foot inside the room. Before White can kill her, the exam timer runs to zero. White addresses the Invigilator, sure of his success, but is disqualified. It is revealed that Deaf had earlier removed a few minutes from the countdown clock. Blonde remembers that Deaf had been using glasses and a piece of broken glass with an exam paper earlier. Taking the abandoned glasses, she finds the phrase «Question 1.» on the exam paper in minuscule writing. Blonde realizes that Question 1 refers to the only question asked of the group by the Invigilator at the beginning of the test («Any questions?»). Blonde answers «No.»
The Invigilator enters and reveals that Deaf is the CEO of the company. He found the virus cure but also discovered a method of rapid cell regeneration capable of providing «the gift of life». The bullet that hit Black contained this cure, reviving him. With high demand for the drug and a limited supply, the company needed an administrator capable of making tough decisions with attention to detail while showing compassion, all traits that Blonde displayed during the exam. Blonde accepts the job.

After seeing some of his friends’ films fail due to studio interference, Stuart Hazeldine decided that he wanted full control over his feature debut.[6] The original story involved an exam at a school, but Stuart Hazeldine changed it to be a job interview. The ending is also Hazeldine’s creation, as the original story didn’t have one. Hazeldine wanted to separate the characters by race, culture, gender, and, especially, worldview.[7] The film’s pandemic was influenced by contemporary fears of bird flu and distrust of pharmaceutical companies. Originally, the script had more science fiction elements, but Hazeldine stripped them out to keep the film grounded. About the twist ending, Hazeldine said he wanted the film to be about more than just the twist, and he tried to appeal to audiences who seek a story about human nature.[6]
Release[edit]
The film premiered in June 2009 as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival[1] and was then part of the Raindance Film Festival 2009.[8] It was released in UK cinemas on 8 January 2010.[2]
On 11 February 2010, IFC Films acquired the rights for the US release, where it was released as part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.[9] The DVD and Blu-ray were released in the UK on 7 June 2010.[10] There was no theatrical release in the US, but IFC Films released the film via video on demand on 23 July 2010[11] and on DVD on 16 November 2010.[12]
On 4 September 2012, a stage adaptation of the film opened in Manchester.[13]
Reception[edit]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of 30 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10.[14]
Tim Robey of The Telegraph said that the film starts off well but loses its way.[15] Lael Loewenstein of Variety called it «a smartly conceived, tautly executed psychological thriller.»[9] Philip French of The Guardian called the film clever and «ingeniously developed» but criticised the ending as disappointing.[16] Also writing in the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw gave the film two out of five stars and said the film does not live up to its intriguing premise.[17] Awarding the film four out of five stars, Total Film compared the film to Cube and the work of Jean-Paul Sartre.[18] Becky Reed of Screen Geek compared it to 12 Angry Men and El Método (The Method), a 2005 Spanish film.[19]

Taking the abandoned glasses, she finds the phrase «Question 1.» on the exam paper in minuscule writing. Blonde realizes that Question 1 refers to the only question asked of the group by the Invigilator at the beginning of the test («Any questions?»). Blonde answers «No.»
The Invigilator enters and reveals that Deaf is the CEO of the company. He found the virus cure but also discovered a method of rapid cell regeneration capable of providing «the gift of life». The bullet that hit Black contained this cure, reviving him. With high demand for the drug and a limited supply, the company needed an administrator capable of making tough decisions with attention to detail while showing compassion, all traits that Blonde displayed during the exam. Blonde accepts the job.

Production[edit]
After seeing some of his friends’ films fail due to studio interference, Stuart Hazeldine decided that he wanted full control over his feature debut.[6] The original story involved an exam at a school, but Stuart Hazeldine changed it to be a job interview. The ending is also Hazeldine’s creation, as the original story didn’t have one. Hazeldine wanted to separate the characters by race, culture, gender, and, especially, worldview.[7] The film’s pandemic was influenced by contemporary fears of bird flu and distrust of pharmaceutical companies. Originally, the script had more science fiction elements, but Hazeldine stripped them out to keep the film grounded. About the twist ending, Hazeldine said he wanted the film to be about more than just the twist, and he tried to appeal to audiences who seek a story about human nature.[6]
Release[edit]
The film premiered in June 2009 as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival[1] and was then part of the Raindance Film Festival 2009.[8] It was released in UK cinemas on 8 January 2010.[2]
On 11 February 2010, IFC Films acquired the rights for the US release, where it was released as part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.[9] The DVD and Blu-ray were released in the UK on 7 June 2010.[10] There was no theatrical release in the US, but IFC Films released the film via video on demand on 23 July 2010[11] and on DVD on 16 November 2010.[12]
On 4 September 2012, a stage adaptation of the film opened in Manchester.[13]
Reception[edit]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of 30 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10.[14]
Tim Robey of The Telegraph said that the film starts off well but loses its way.[15] Lael Loewenstein of Variety called it «a smartly conceived, tautly executed psychological thriller.»[9] Philip French of The Guardian called the film clever and «ingeniously developed» but criticised the ending as disappointing.[16] Also writing in the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw gave the film two out of five stars and said the film does not live up to its intriguing premise.[17] Awarding the film four out of five stars, Total Film compared the film to Cube and the work of Jean-Paul Sartre.[18] Becky Reed of Screen Geek compared it to 12 Angry Men and El Método (The Method), a 2005 Spanish film.[19]

Сюжет
Восемь претендентов пытаются получить работу своей мечты. Но вакансия всего одна. На пути к заветной должности они уже преодолели массу испытаний. Остался последний экзамен. Он проходит в изолированной комнате под присмотром молчаливого вооруженного охранника. Каждый сидит за отдельным столом, на столе карандаш, лист бумаги, на котором большими буквами напечатано «Кандидат № такой-то». Суровый «Наблюдатель» оглашает задание: «работу мечты» получит тот, кто за отведенных 80 минут ответит на один-единственный вопрос. Но вот беда — самого́ вопроса в его речи никто не услышал. Условия такие: кто обратится к охраннику или к Наблюдателю — будет дисквалифицирован, кто испортит свой лист бумаги — будет дисквалифицирован, кто покинет комнату — будет дисквалифицирован. Наблюдатель выходит, время пошло! Первый шок; испытуемые перед дилеммой: как можно ответить на вопрос не зная самого́ вопроса? Одна из кандидаток начинает писать: «Я считаю, что заслуживаю…» Первая ошибка! Бумагу портить нельзя. Кандидатку удаляют из комнаты. Оставшиеся пытаются решить проблему вместе. Впереди испытание водой, огнём и ненавистью…
