Dear Ronny,

Thank you for your recent email. I hope you’re ok.

In your email, you write that you’re going to have a long holiday. That’s amazing! I hope the weather would help you enjoy your holiday. We usually have nice weather in Russia in summer, with occasional rains. My favourite season is definitely summer because we have really long school holidays and I can go to visit my grandparents in the countryside and spend time with my friends. However, this summer we are going to travel around Italy and after that, I’m going to the camp.

As for your news, I have some questions about your uncle Keith. How old is he? What does he do? Where does he usually go for a holiday?

It’s time to finish now. Write back soon.

All the best,

Anastasiia

Imagine that you are doing a project on what book genres are popular among teenagers in Zetland. You have found some data on the subjectthe results of the opinion polls (see the table below).
Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Book genre: adventure, detective/war/spy stories, sports stories, animal stories, romance
Number of readers (%)

It is well known that…
Nowadays more and more people…
Over the last few decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of people who…
…plays an important role in our life …
Undoubtedly, all people…
Nowadays it is impossible to imagine … without…

It is hard to deny the importance of reading in a teenager’s life. I have decided to do a project on what book genres are popular among teenagers. I have found the results of an opinion poll to illustrate some of my ideas.

The main features of this table/graph/pie chart…
One can see from the poll that…
The most popular … the least popular…
If we look at the graph/table/pie chart, we can see…
Looking at the main features…
What stands out from the table/graph/pie chart…
Another striking feature is…

As we can see from the chart, 55.4% of readers in Zetland prefer adventure stories to all other genres, while romance is the least favourite kind of literature among young people with only a fifth of total number (17.6 %) present in the opinion poll. We can also see that teenagers are keen on reading detective, sports, and animal stories.

It is apparently seen that…
Looking at the figures in the table/graph/pie chart…
In comparison/in contrast,…
On the other hand/However,/Likewise,…
… not as … as… …
while/ whereas / although / but

Looking at the figures in the table, we can see that sports stories (noted by 49.2 % of respondents) are almost twice as popular as animal stories. Another interesting feature of the poll is that adventure and detective/war/spy stories are twice as favoured as animal stories (27.2 %).

  • В первом предложении обозначьте проблему;
  • Во втором предложении объясните, что это за проблема;
  • В третьем предложении опишите последствия этой проблемы;
  • В четвертом предложении предложите решение проблемы;
The main problem with … is…
The main problem faced by … is…
The foremost problem here is…
The typical problem arises here is that…
As far as I know, it can lead to…
However/Fortunately, the problem is solvable
One effective solution to deal with … is…
A solution that can prove successful is…

Although we see that teenagers are still reading books, fewer and fewer books are read every year. With the development of the Internet people would rather watch a show than read a book. Decline in reading can lead to social issues: children who are behind their peers in reading struggle with low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy. I believe that we could solve this problem by advertising the importance of reading. For example, a well-known Instagram blogger launches a 2-months marathon with a challenge to read 1 new book every 2 weeks.

I would like to conclude by saying that, in my opinion, reading plays a crucial role in our life as it helps us grow mentally, emotionally, and psychologically.

Dear Paul,

Thanks a lot for your e-mail. I’m happy to hear from you again. I’m sorry for not writing earlier, but I’ve been busy preparing for my exams.

I’m always happy to answer your questions. Personally, I really like cycling too, but I have never taken part in a bike race. Actually, when I go cycling, I don’t like riding my bicycle in the city because there are so many cars, and I have to stop all the time and be careful. As for me, I can ride wherever I want in the countryside, and I never worry about anything.

Well, I’d better go now as it’s time to go to bed. Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours,
Kolya
