SPEAKING. PART 4

Task 4. Imagine that you are doing a project “Foreign languages in our life” together with your friend. You have found some illustrations and want to share the news. Leave a voice message to your friend. In 2.5 minutes be ready to tell the friend about the photos:

• give a brief description, justifying the choice of the photos for the project;

• say in what way the pictures are different, justifying the choice of the photos for the project;

• mention the advantages and disadvantages (1–2) of studying foreign languages;

• express your opinion on the subject of the project – what role foreign languages play in your life?

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (2–3 sentences for every item of the plan, 12–15 sentences total). You have to talk continuously.

The first photo shows several people sitting at a table and wearing headphones. They are probably taking part in some international negotiations and listening to an interpreter while discussing some issue.

The second photo depicts two young girls on a holiday. They are holding backpacks, a guide map and a camera. They seem to have found some attraction with the help of the map, and one of the girls is taking pictures.

The most obvious difference is that in the first photo, the people are dealing with a foreign language at work, while in the second one, the women might be using it during a trip to read a guide map.

So, these pictures are perfect for our project as they show that knowledge of foreign languages can be useful in different spheres of life.

What is good about learning foreign languages is that knowing more than one language opens up your vacation destination possibilities. Traveling through a foreign country becomes much easier if you can speak the language of that country. At the same time, its drawback is that learning a foreign language is challenging. Many languages have different systems of grammar, and some languages use a completely different alphabet and different sounds.

Personally, I think knowing a foreign language is really important in my life because it makes me a more educated person. It can also give me a lot of opportunities in the future career and everyday life.

You are going to give an interview. You have to answer five questions. Give full answers to the questions (2–3 sentences). Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Interviewer: Hello everybody! It’s Teenagers Round the World Channel. Our guest today is a teenager from Russia and we are going to discuss foreign languages in our lives. We’d like to know our guest’s point of view on this issue. Please answer five questions. So, let’s get started.

Данный материал был разработан в помощь старшеклассникам для подготовки к сдаче устной части ОГЭ. 

Вначале по теме «Foreign Languages» сформулированы вопросы, затем представлены примерные ответы.

Готовясь к экзамену по английскому языку в 9 классе, ученик может отобрать и использовать из представленного материала то, что подходит именно ему при повторении этой разговорной темы.

TOPIC: FOREIGN LANGUAGES

You are going to give a talk about foreign languages . You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Question 1. Why do many young people learn foreign languages?

The modern world is becoming smaller all the time. Every day distances between different countries seem less. That’s why it’s becoming more and more important to know different languages.

Some young people learn languages for their studies, others for travelling abroad and for some teens studying a language is simply a hobby.

English has become the standard language for all kinds of communication. 

If you are fluent in a foreign language you feel more comfortable. You can learn more and you will have access to a wider range of jobs and occupations in the future.

Question 2. How can people improve their language skills?

Undoubtedly, learning a foreign language is difficult. So to succeed in it people must work very hard and follow some rules. It’s a good idea to practise pronunciation, revise vocabulary, grammar and spelling. The more we read, the better our reading skills will improve. Listening to native speakers, all kinds of songs and watching original films can help in mastering a foreign language too. Going online, language learners have a chance to speak to people from around the world. It’s a wonderful way to develop a good command of a foreign language.

Question 3. What foreign languages would you like to learn? Why?

As for me, I’d like to learn English because it’ll give me the skills I need to succeed at university and beyond.

Moreover, there are many different ways to use it. I can read English books in the original as well as newspapers and magazines and understand films in English without any help.

When I go abroad, I talk to people from different countries and understand their culture and traditions. Speaking English I can travel everywhere.

To sum up, when you can speak another language your world becomes bigger, richer and more inspiring.

Здравствуйте! Сегодня мы поговорим о роли иностранных языков в нашей жизни. Эта тема достаточно популярна и указана в кодификаторе ОГЭ. 

Последние несколько топиков я записываю исключительно с оглядкой на этот кодификатор, так как в этом году сам готовлю к ОГЭ. Если вы также не понаслышке знаете об этом экзамене, то наверняка в курсе, что на сайте ФИПИ есть банк заданий, из которого с вероятностью 99% и будут собраны задания для реального экзамена.

Поэтому видеоуроки по топикам сейчас я записываю так:

• выбираю тему, например «Foreign languages»;
• нахожу в банке заданий ОГЭ все задания на говорение по этой теме;
• просматриваю все вопросы (они часто повторяются);
• оставляю 5-6 вопросов, ответов на которые будет достаточно для любого из заданий по указанной теме;
• пишу сценарий, в котором даются ответы на все вопросы.
• делаю презентацию и видеоурок.

И ещё, для того, чтобы ответить на все вопросы мне, как автору, чаще всего удобнее говорить от лица девятиклассника, поэтому не удивляйтесь Филиппам и Иванам в таких уроках 🙂

Foreign Languages in Our Life

Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and efforts. Nowadays it is especially important to know foreign languages. Some people learn languages because they need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby. Everyone, who knows foreign languages can speak to people from other countries, read foreign writers in the original, which makes your outlook wider.

It is not surprising that many intellectuals and well-educated people are polyglots. I study English. Nowadays English has become the world’s most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural relations. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, the South Africa Republic. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It is the language of computer technology.

To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. The English language is a wonderful language. It is the language of the great literature. It is the language of William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens. The great German poet Goethe once said, “He, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own one”. That is why in order to understand oneself and environment one has to study foreign languages.

Изучение иностранного языка не является легким делом. Это долгий и медленный процесс, который занимает много времени и усилий. Сегодня особенно важно знать иностранные языки. Некоторые люди изучают языки, потому что они нужны для работы, другие путешествуют за границей, для третьих, изучение языков является хобби. Каждый, кто знает иностранные языки может общаться с людьми из других стран, читать иностранных писателей в оригинале, что делает ваш кругозор гораздо шире.

Это не удивительно, что многие представители интеллигенции и хорошо образованные люди — полиглоты. Я изучаю английский. В настоящее время английский язык стал самым важным языком в мире политики, науки, торговли и культурных связей. Более 300 миллионов людей говорят на нем как на родном языке. Носители английского языка живут в Великобритании, Соединенных Штатах Америки, в Австралии и Новой Зеландии. Английский является одним из официальных языков в Ирландской Республике, Канаде, Южной Африканской Республике. Английский является одним из официальных языков Организации Объединенных Наций и других политических организаций. Половина научной литературы в мире на английском языке. Это язык компьютерных технологий.

Знать английский язык сегодня абсолютно необходимо для каждого образованного человека, для каждого хорошего специалиста. Английский язык является прекрасным языком. Это язык великой литературы. Это язык Вильяма Шекспира, Джонатана Свифта, Вальтера Скотта, Чарльза Диккенса. Великий немецкий поэт Гете однажды сказал: «Тот, кто не знает иностранного языка, не знает своего собственного». Вот почему для того, чтобы понять самого себя и окружающую среду надо изучать иностранные языки.

Foreign Languages In My Life

Language is an essential form of communication. So, the more languages you speak, the more friends you have. My parents have always wanted me to know several languages. I started learning English and French at the age of 6. By that time I already knew Russian and Georgian languages.

When I was a child, I didn’t understand how important it is to learn at least one foreign language. Now I know that learning languages helps you in many ways. First of all, I started paying more attention to grammar and overall structure of my native language. Secondly, I’m going to pass an English language exam next year. I’m pretty sure that it will be fine, as I’ve been a diligent student. Besides, my parents and teachers say I’m capable of learning several languages. I have a good memory and good linguistic ability. Thirdly, I’m sure that the knowledge of foreign languages will be beneficial for my future career.

Moreover, it is a good way to find new penfriends from different countries and to keep in touch with them. That’s how I learned some peculiarities of English and French culture. On top of that, last year I participated in an international exchange program, which was a good way to practice my speaking skills. We went to London and stayed there for a week with our English friends. Then, we hosted them in our town.

After I graduate from school, I want to enter a linguistic university to become an interpreter. But that’s not all. After the university, I’d like to continue my studies abroad in the English or French speaking environment. In my opinion, it is the best way to improve the language skills and to make new friends.

Иностранные языки в моей жизни

Язык является важнейшей формой общения. Поэтому, чем больше языков ты знаешь, тем больше друзей имеешь. Мои родители всегда хотели, чтобы я знала несколько языков. Я начала изучать английский и французский в возрасте 6 лет. К тому времени я уже знала русский и грузинский языки.

В детстве я не понимала, как важно знать, по крайней мере, один иностранный язык. Теперь я знаю, что изучение языков полезно во многих отношениях. Во-первых, я стала уделять больше внимания грамматике и общей структуре своего родного языка. Во-вторых, в следующем году я собираюсь сдавать экзамена по английскому языку. Я вполне уверена, что все будет хорошо, так как я прилежно училась. Кроме того, мои родители и учителя говорят, что у меня способности к изучению сразу нескольких языков. У меня хорошая память и хорошие языковые способности. В-третьих, я уверена, что знание иностранных языков полезно для моей будущей карьеры.

Кроме того, это хорошая возможность познакомиться с новыми друзьями по переписке из разных стран и держать с ними связь. Именно таким способом я узнала некоторые особенности английской и французской культуры. Кроме того, в прошлом году я участвовала в программе международного обмена, который помог мне практиковать разговорные навыки. Мы провели неделю в Лондоне с нашими английскими друзьями. Затем они гостили в нашем городе.

После окончания школы, я хочу поступить в лингвистический университет и стать переводчиком. Но это еще не все. После окончания университета, я хотела бы продолжить учебу за рубежом в англоговорящей или франкоговорящей среде. На мой взгляд, это лучший способ улучшить языковые навыки и завести новых друзей.

Nowadays the idea of studying foreign languages is becoming increasingly popular. I am doing a school project, the aim of which is to find out what foreign languages are popular among teenagers in Zetland. I have found some data in a table which is useful for my project.

As can be seen, the statistics illustrate the popularity of foreign languages, in percentages. Perhaps predictably, English is the most frequently selected language, with a result of 29%. In contrast, Chinese is the lowest priority, as only 7% of the respondents select it. No more than 13% of the adolescents choose Spanish for studying.

Expectedly, opinions on this topic are wide-ranging. There are two languages which are close to each other. 27% of the respondents choose German and only 24% choose French for studying. It can be assumed that ma
