Dear Paula,
Thanks for your letter! I’m really glad to get it from you again. Sorry, I haven’t written to you for so long as I was busy at school.
Let me answer your questions. Well, I used to take part in a project related with litter collection and environmental purifying. As far as I know, hydropower developed actively in Russia. As for me, I prefer to use a private car as I don’t like to contact with many strangers which are in the public transport.
By the way, I want to know more about your trip. How long did the visit last? What were the weather in Edinburgh? What the sights did you see?
Oh, I have to go now as I promised my mom to help her around the house.
Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Evelina

Youth organisations are useful for solving countries’ problems
Показать текст целиком
Today youth actively takes part in solving political problems. Therefore, some people think that youngsters foundations can contribute to finding solutions of their countries’ and the world’s issues, whereas others claim that only adult-led organisations can help young people to solve political problems.
However, there are those who think otherwise. The opponents claim that youth foundations cannot be useful in solving political problems as youngsters are not mature enough for doing this.
In conclusion, I want to say that nowadays the role of youth in countries’ and world’s life is really important. Therefore, people should rely on youngsters and do not underrate them.

Task 1. Read the text aloud.
Since ancient times, humans have loved and cherished cats as their pets. Today more than 80 million cats reside in US homes, with an estimated three cats for every dog on the planet. Yet there is still a lot we don’t know about our feline friends — including what they think of their owners.
After observing pet cats for several years, scientists have come to an intriguing conclusion: cats don’t really understand people the way dogs do. They tend to feel it is they who own masters, not vice versa. On the contrary, dogs perceive people as being very different from themselves. As soon as they see a human, they change their behaviour. The way a dog plays with a human is completely different from the way it plays with a dog. Cats are independent creatures and they can easily change their owner without changing their habits.

Canada’s original inhabitants are Indians. The very name Canada comes from a word meaning «village» in one of the local languages of Indian tribes. These tribes lived on the territory of modern Canada before the first Europeans arrived in the 11th century. They soon left, but more Europeans came in the 16th century and were made welcome because they brought manufactured goods and traded them for furs and other native products. However, the Europeans settled down and gradually displaced Indians over the next 250 years.
European settlers came in a series of waves. First were the French, followed by the English, and these two groups are considered the founding nations. France lost its part of territory to Britain in a war in 1760, but most of the French-speaking colonists remained. Their effort to preserve their language and culture is still an issue of Canadian history and has led in recent years to a movement to become independent from the rest of Canada.

Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises the four main islands in addition to numerous smaller islands. Tokyo is the country’s capital and largest city.
Mountains dominate Japan’s landscape, covering 75 to 80 percent of the country. Historically, the mountains were barriers to transportation, limiting the economic development of isolated areas. However, with the development of tunnels, bridges, and air transportation in the modern era, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. The Japanese have long celebrated the beauty of their mountains in art and literature, and today many mountain areas are preserved in national parks.
Most of Japan’s people live on plains and lowlands found mainly along the lower courses of the country’s major rivers, on the lowest slopes of mountain ranges, and along the sea coast. This concentration of people makes Japan one of the world’s most crowded countries.

The first maps were drawn by explorers to help them find their way home and show people where they had been. The maps showed the shape of the land, distances between places and special features such as caves and old trees. Nowadays, maps show the towns and villages, and the roads, railways, rivers and mountains. Symbols are used to show all the different things on a map and there is a key to explain what the symbols stand for.
Over the centuries, people explored most of the Earth and put together the map of the world we use today. Maps of the world or large areas are often either “political” or “physical”. The political map shows territorial borders. The purpose of the physical map is to show features of geography such as mountains, soil type or land use including roads, railroads and buildings.

As soon as spring brings a new growth of bushes and berries, bears start feeding. They eat and eat. All through the spring and summer their feeding goes on. The bears build themselves up. They store food and fats that they will need in the fall when they start their long sleep.
As days grow shorter, and the temperature begins to fall, bears hunt for a sleeping place. It may be a shallow cave, or a deep crack between rocks. Some bears end up sleeping in hollow logs. Logs seem to be bears’ favourite places. Bears seem to choose small spaces. They can keep warmer in a cave that’s just large enough to hold them than in a larger cave. They often line their sleeping place with leaves and dried grass.

A
female chimp has learned how to use the Arabic numerals, 1 to 9, to
memorise the order of five numbers. She, unlike males, was able to
remember the sequence of at least five numbers. This is the same or
even more than pre-school children can do. It comes as no surprise to
scientists who discover something else that chimpanzees can do every
year, bringing them closer to us. People can normally remember a
sevendigit number at first sight. This is our brain’s “magic
number”. A chimp’s brain is only half the size of ours. Yet, they
remember five digits. In an experiment, a chimp was shown five
numbers on a computer screen. Her task was then to touch each number
in the correct order. In order to perform the task successfully, she
had to memorise all the numbers. And she did. She got the fourth
number correct 90 % of the time, and the fifth number correct 65 % of

Medicine
has existed for thousands of years. At first, medicine was rather an
art than science. It was little based on skills and knowledge but,
instead, it had connections to the religious beliefs. At the early
stages of medicine, doctors relied on religious rituals in the same
way as on medication. For example, a medicine man would apply herbs
and say prayers for healing. The first physicians thought that
bloodletting was the best treatment of all. In recent centuries,
since the advent of science, most medicine has become a combination
of art and science. Much depends on the talent of the doctor and on
the efficiency of drugs and surgery. Nowadays, we come to understand
more and more about our body and to know what is going on inside the
cells. Also, genetic engineering opens up new perspectives for
treating inherited diseases. And, of course, new medical technologies
have already saved millions of lives.

Change your food choice
While recycling and refillable water bottles were once the most popular fad among the environmentally conscious, there is now a more pressing matter for humans to turn their attention to in order to slow global climate change: the animal industry.
When you navigate to the university website on campus sustainability, you find a list of all of the ways the University is making an effort to “go green”.
A plan to increase levels of recycling on campus? Great! Printers that reduce paper waste? Fantastic! A garden to collect excess rainwater? Amazing! Let’s go one step farther.
If we’re not actively educating students about the immense ways our food choices influence the environment, then we’re not doing enough to really serve the causes we claim to support. It’s not only about giving students the option to eat less meat but telling them how these choices can influence the future of the environment and create sustainable change. The question of whether eating meat is bad for the environment is not a question anymore. And the issue isn’t that people are unwilling to try more plant-based foods or unaware of the perils the environment is currently in, but rather, it’s that people aren’t aware of the effects their demand for meat has on the earth.
Lean and Green, a student initiative that strives to promote sustainability on campus through environmentally friendly and healthy diet choices, conducted a study that showed students don’t fully understand the impact their eating habits have on the environment.
The livestock industry of chickens, cows and pigs produces more greenhouse gas emissions that all cars and trucks combined, according to Greenpeace. So as we eat more meat, the demand for meat likewise goes up and increases those gases. But when we eat more meat alternatives instead, like nuts or tofu, we can make a big difference. According to Walter, if a person went vegetarian for a year, they would produce three times less carbon than if they were to purchase a hybrid car.
And interestingly, more than 92 percent of responders said they would like to see more plant-based foods in the university dining halls. So it’s clear that students are willing to eat less meat and explore more veggie-friendly options. But what’s not clear for students is why these options are imperative for making choices that help our planet.
With the student population of about 34,000, the University has the capability to make significant changes for the future of the environment. Give the students want they want – which is more diverse plant-based options – but also tell them why they should want it. Informing students about why these options are environmentally favorable can only inspire students to choose them more often. Posters throughout the dining halls, informational email campaigns, programs in residence halls and even financial incentives can help inform students and shape their knowledge and decision-making.
In conjunction with offering more vegetarian options, letting non-vegetarian students know about the sustainable benefits that come from choosing these foods can encourage them to eat them more often.
The animal industry is only going to grow if people keep eating meat. If our university wants to have an impact and keep up its reputation as environmentally conscious, it should ensure its students know how they can do their part to help the earth.
