— And why do people do sports? (First of all, people do sports to stay healthy)
— Now think and say what the theme of our lesson is.
— You are right. We continue our work on the theme “Sport”. Today we’ll revise the material of our previous lessons, speak about sports in people’s lives and talk about its influence on people’s health.
III Активизация изученной лексики в устной речи
People have been doing different kinds of sports for centuries. Look at these pictures and name these sports. What do these sports have in common? What is the difference between them?
(Snowboarding and golf;
Water skiing and sailing;
Hockey and football;
Chess and the long jump;
Windsurfing and downhill skiing;
Ice skating and ice hockey)
Thousands years ago ancient Greeks said “A sound mind in a sound body”. Most people who go in for sports know from their own experience that this famous saying is true. And what is your attitude to sports in general? What sport do you do and why?

At the same time, a lot of people don’t do sports. They say that it is a waste of time and energy. Besides, it can be the cause of many injuries. Let’s read the text about Jane and find out what health problems were caused by these sports.
Rowing machine – backache
Jogging – (twisted ankle)
Hill walking – (a sore throat, coughing, sneezing, blisters)
Skiing – (swollen knees, broken leg)
Sailing – (vomiting)
V Физкультминутка (зрительная гимнастика)
I think your eyes are tired a little bit so let’s do some exercises. Close your eyes and just relax. Well done! Open your eyes and look at the screen.
Now twinkle your eyes and let’s go on.
VI Формирование навыков аудирования
Despite the fact that health problems can be caused by some sports there are people, so called thrill-seekers or risk-takers, who can’t live without dangerous or extreme sports. What attracts people to these sports – adventure or danger? Why do some people do extreme sports?

In white-water rafting you have to try to stay afloat in the river.
Parkour is sometimes called free jumping.
The idea of parkour is to jump and climb over things like steps, railings and trees.

I think you agree with me that all kinds of extreme sports are too risky and dangerous. What do you think about doing extreme sports?
(I think extreme sports are too risky.
I think extreme sports are too dangerous.
I think people who do extreme sports should be seriously trained.
Very often people who do extreme sports get injuries such as broken legs and arms and twisted ankles.)
It is very interesting to know what different people think of extreme sports.
Read the people’s opinions and match these opinions and the statements. One statement is extra
Statements
1. High-risk activities help to build up character.
2. Extreme sports are too dangerous for children.
3. Extreme sports can become a form of addiction.
4. Extreme sports are a means of self-expression.
5. People had better encourage extreme athletes.
6. Training and safety are key elements in extreme sports.
7. Extreme sports are not only risky but infectious for others.
A. Sports are a way for people to show what they love, whether it’s a passion for chess or a passion for jumping in motor cross. Life is something everyone should enjoy the way one sees it. People shouldn’t be told something is too dangerous when it’s what they love. Society becomes so focused on safety that they forget what makes us unique. Everyone has a dream, a love, an escape, and sports are a way people can show who they really are.
B. Extreme sports like base jumping and rock climbing have achieved mass audience. But they are not safe. I’d say extreme sports are too extreme for me. And what is even worse is being someone viewing the risky behavior on places like YouTube. Such videos can influence others to do similar things that may result in serious health problems. These videos are quickly spreading across the net, which I don’t like.
C. Instead of discouraging athletes involved in extreme sports, we should celebrate them for their differences and do what we can to support them as they climb higher and run faster. Well, with public support, these athletes can expand our boundaries. By limiting access to activities some people consider too dangerous, we might be inviting even greater risks in the form of crime and health problems.
D. I’m sure people get involved in extreme sports because of the adrenaline rush. The word “extreme” seems to me a part of this thrill. But the adrenaline rush can’t be achieved by doing the same action over and over again. Extreme athletes chase the adrenaline rush by continually increasing the challenge and danger presented by their chosen sports. They get used to risky behavior and can’t stop in search of new risks.
E. Being in any extreme sport isn’t a joke, when you’re doing it you should take it very seriously. You should wear protective equipment such as knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet. I’ve met a number of people who engage in extreme sports and they do take risks, but they’re usually well-prepared for such risks. Those who are serious about extreme sports are highly trained athletes who take care of their bodies and try to be very conscious.
F. I think extreme sports are too risky, especially for kids. It can be life-threatening at times because you never know what is going to happen. Teens like taking sports to an extreme because they like the thrill of it. They will never know when enough is enough. If teens would take the time to realize what these sports are doing to their body, they might rethink the whole “extreme” part. I feel kids shouldn’t be allowed to take up extreme sports at all.

Comment on the following statement: |
Some people think that extreme sports help to build character. | |
What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? |
Some people think that extreme sports help build character whereas others think it’s a bad idea.
I think that extreme sports definitely help build character. First of all, extreme sports help develop qualities such as discipline, persistence and focus. Second, they teach a person to overcome fear, build confidence and mental strength. The reason why extreme sports are better at it than other sports is because the price of an error in extreme sports is very high. One has to stay focused and be athletic in order to make as few mistakes as possible, and that requires discipline in training and all those other qualities.
At the same time there’re people who believe that extreme sports are above all dangerous. One can start doing boxing and get a concussion, or fall off a cliff while climbing a rock. Also such sports can be addictive. One may become an adrenaline junkie who would do anything just to get that rush, and sometimes that can lead to serious injuries.
In my opinion these people have a point. Extreme sports are definitely dangerous and they can be addictive. However, I believe that if one is smart about doing them, in most cases he can avoid serious injuries. The risk still remains, of course, and it’s up to anyone whether they want to do extreme sports or not. But there’s one thing that’s certain – they do help build character.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that extreme sports are surely dangerous. At the same time, they’re one of the best ways I know that can help one develop a very strong character.

Эссе (сочинение) по английскому языку на тему: Some people think that extreme sports help to build character
ЭССЕ (СОЧИНЕНИЕ)
Nowadays more and more people go in for extreme sports like skateboarding, base jumping, parachute jumping, mountaineering and others. They believe that extreme sports help to build character.
In my opinion, extreme sport is a good way for a person to develop him or her physically and psychologically. As to the character, it is really the fact that extreme sport helps to increase willpower, persistence, and patience. Firstly, if you do any of extreme sport, you are often exposed to danger. You have to compel yourself to overcome fear and to move forward. Secondly, extreme sport is often a team activity. For example, mountaineering is usually done by a group of people who are dependent on each other. So they have to trust and help each other, otherwise they cannot achieve their goals. However, there some people who think that people do not necessarily need to do extreme sports to build character. Their reason is that there are a lot of other means of personal development, which are safer and more comfortable. For example, reading books or watching films about heroes and their valorous actions can help you cultivate your mind and character. As for me, I cannot adopt this point of view because of its deficiency. I strongly believe that you need action to improve yourself.
To sum it up, building character is a serious work, which demands a lot of strain. I am convinced that extreme sport is a sure way to this goal.
No doubt extreme sports build character. They became known about 30 years ago and they are becoming more and more popular. Some young people get pleasure from hang-gliding, bungee jumping, parkour, scrambling, and booster , others jump out of aeroplane and use a board to surf the air or do gymnastics in mid air.These activities often involve speed, height and a high level of physical training. They prepare people to overcome obstacles in an emergency. We all know that it`s important to build positive character traits that will last a lifetime. Doing extreme sports requires patience. It develops self-control .You learn to control your fear and your moves. Also people compete against weather and difficulties of exact kind of extreme sport. Young people want to look outrageous and gain respect of others. On the other hand they want to satisfy their curiosity, they want a new experience. They try extreme sports for the excitement. For them it`s a form of entertainment or a way to spend their free time. It`s difficult to understand why people put their lives at risk. Extreme sports are rather dangerous, you can injure your leg or even die. I am not a risk taker, I find extreme sports awfully stressful .But I am sure going for some extreme sport determines a man`s character. You become more confident and disciplined, you use your head before you act. I find it quite exciting to watch extreme sports on TV. Well, take downhill skiing, for instance. I even tried it once 3 years ago. You have to book lessons, start on the nursery slopes and all that. It cost me a lot and also I wasn`t making enough of an effort. So, I`ve gone off it.
