Task-I: Read the text and complete the tasks. History of animation Do you like watching cartoons? Probably you do! But how did they come to be? Who invented them? This is actually a very tough question. The first cartoons were created long before the TV. For example, shadow play was a very popular form of entertainment in ancient China. Such shows looked almost like modern cartoons! A toy called a flip book was made in the late 19th century. It was a small soft book with pictures. Each picture was drawn in a slightly different way. When you bend this book and release the pages one by one, the images start to move. Strictly speaking, they don’t, but our eyes see it like that anyway. The first real cartoons were made using this trick, too! In 1895 brothers Louis and Auguste Lumière created a cinematograph. It was a camera and a film projector in one device. Using this device, many aspiring film directors started to create their own cartoons. This developed into a full industry by 1910. Many cartoons of that era are forgotten now, but some are still with us. For example, Felix the Cat was created by Otto Messmer in 1919, and he’s still with us, more than a hundred years later. Currently the rights to the character are held by DreamWorks Animation. One of the pioneers in the industry was famous Walt Disney. He was not afraid to experiment to make a cartoon, and his Snow White film was among the firsts to use a multiplane camera. With its help the characters were able to move around the objects, creating an illusion of a 3D world. Today most of the cartoons are made with computer animation. The last traditional Disney cartoon to date was Winnie The Pooh (2011) Task-11 Write true or false, correct false sentences 1. Introduction

Cartoons are a unique kind of media. Shown through comics and, of course, mostly animation. With modern cartoons such as Gravity Falls and Steven Universe, and with very old cartoons such as Daffy Duck, they have been existing longer than you might think, and with many differing purposes for their existence. Even the way its story telling, comedy, and types of characters have changed, as generations went on through the future.

Good day everyone, my name is Possifox, and I present to you, the History of Animated Cartoons. From their original concepts and the evolution from then to now, I’ll hopefully be providing this community some interesting information about the origins of the entertainment we all know and love. That’s how you do an introduction, right? No? Yes? Maybe? Oh well. Let’s continue.

user uploaded image

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Old. Very. Very. Old.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

As I said before. Cartoons have existed far longer than you may think, or at least the concept of animation. Excluding the findings on cave walls (more info about this http://m.nautil.us/issue/11/light/early-humans-made-animated-art ), the first actual animation was started in 1832, through a device invented by Joseph Plateau called a phenakistoscope (what a mouthful, isn’t it?).

user uploaded image

A Waltz. Blood Moon Ball material here!

As you can see, this is an example of a phenakistoscope animation when seen from the eye.

user uploaded image

This, however, is what happens behind the scenes. The invention is operated through a spinning disc with each frame on there. The user spins said disc, looks through a slit, and as it does that, the images blur to make an illusion of animation. Later, a zoetrope was invented, which is basically a larger version of a phenakistoscope, so the function remains the same.

But this was in the early 1800s. In those years, entertainment like that was just getting started. Next, are actual screenings.

━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Silent Years

━━━━━━━━━━━━

This is when animation during mid-1800s to early 1900s got more attention. Silent films. A lot of progression was made, but here are the most noteworthy:

~ Invention of the Praxinoscope (an ancient projector in a way, made in 1877) and the Theatre by Charles-Émile Reynaud in 1888, first animated film by him released on October 28th, 1892.

user uploaded image

Pauvre Pierrot, Getting Friend Zoned Since 1892.

Now, why in the world does it have color? Back then, most films were black and white. You see, that’s the thing. This particular animation wasn’t made in film, but it’s own invention, the praxiniscope. The color was painted directly onto glass on the device, giving it it’s unique style.

~ First (photographed) Animated Projection, Humorous Phases of Funny Faces by J. Stuart Blackton (1906). This was drawn onto a blackboard, showing, you know, what the name says. It’s more of a stop motion, but I think it’s worthy of being a part of the animation history.

Humorous Phases of Funny Faces

~ One of the Most Successful Early 1900s Animations, Gertie the Dinosaur, by Winsor McCay (1914). This might be my second favorite out of all of the these really, first being the one mentioned first in this section. In the video, start at 7:00.

Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) — World’s 1st Keyframe Animation Cartoon — Dino’s are really cool.

Note: Every animation was originally silent. Music was added so it wouldn’t be boring, me thinks.

Silent films, visually, were fun! But today, sound and music are essential to us. The next section here, are the form of cartoons that are most similar, but also different to ours, and in which animation just boomed.

The Golden Age and War.

HERE WE ARE, IN THE JUICYNESS OF JUICE. THE ORIGINAL LOONY TOONS, DISNEY, MUCH, MUCH MORE.

It’s names, Golden Age, Golden Era, whatever is fine for you, have earned it’s title! I’ll be focusing on the goals that were accomplished and one particular event that was part of this explosion, one that affected many lives.

First, the implementation of sound. «My Old Kentucky Home» by Max Fleicher was the first cartoon to use a soundtrack, however it didn’t completely sync up.

Song Car-Tunes-My Old Kentucky Home(1926)

But one that really DID synchronize, adopting the term «Mickey Mousing» if other cartoons did that too, was Walt Disney’s «Steamboat Willie» in 1928.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Steamboat Willie

This led up to more improvements on cartoons, such as Technicolor, evolving from the previous black and white. First to do this was Flowers and Trees (1932), and the classic Snow White was the first full length film to do this.

Flowers and Trees (1932)

This wave of technology continued on from 1937-1955, including cartoons such as Lady and the Tramp and Fantasia!

Fantasia

But, things weren’t so fine and dandy all the time. There was an event. An event that changed animation.

World War II.

Yes, in World War II, as it was a depressing time in history, entertainment was needed to keep hopes up, and maybe a little info about the things people can do to help the war effort. So, the U.S Army teamed up with Disney to make cartoons to help the people. Some were Propoganda and promotions of war culture, to boost morale and awareness like these:

1943 American War Propaganda with Donald Duck

World war 2 in cartoon: Food Will Win The War 1941

The Warner Bros. had their fair share of propaganda and educational war culture cartoons too. An example of this was War Bonds, with Bugs Bunny, and some classic over the top comedy with Daffy Duck.

Bugs Bunny Any Bonds Today 1942 Warner Bros cartoons

LOONEY TUNES (Looney Toons): Daffy The Commando (Daffy Duck) (1943) (Remastered) (HD 1080p)

As this is a touchy topic, I didn’t want to get too into it, and it wouldn’t relate too much to cartoons anymore, so if you’d like to find out more, feel free to research about cartoons and World War 2.

Anyway, as you read, this time period, from the 1920s to 1960, was a growing period for cartoons. Through hardship and technological advances, it paved a path for future animation. More of these cartoons I’d like to mention thoroughly (but this blog is getting too long xD) are:

And now we are here. Welcome, to the new age. Over here in this section, because this blog is getting SUPER long, I’ll summarize some noteworthy cartoons (in my own description of them, huehuehue) from each time period, in no particular order, as I haven’t seen any significant advances that we might not no of.

To be honest, I didn’t really get into this show, and I don’t know why! It’s just a classic I’ve come across while researching for this blog, and why not put it in this list? Some people may know it.

Dexter’s Labatory (1996 — 2003)

(No picture for Tpl Space)

I couldn’t NOT put this in here. Dexter and his sister are just a wonderful pair.

Phineas and Ferb (2007 — 2015)

(You know the gist of it.)

Getting more recent! A Disney Cartoon where they haven’t actually canceled it and have a proper finale! These summer loving boys have had a lot of adventures, and we FINALLY got the kiss between Isabella and Phineas. FANGIRLLLL.

Adventure Time

(cri, no picture ;-;)

JAKE THE DOG AND FINN THE HUMAN, DISTANT LANDS, THE SHIPS MAN.

Gravity Falls (2012 — 2016)

(I really wish I could put a picture for these next ones.)

Here are our beloved Pines twins and loveable dorito chip Bill, off on solving the mysteries of Gravity Falls (or its destruction of it, your choice!). I still have the feels.

Wander Over Yonder (2013 — ongoing)

(Why isn’t this one more popular?)

This show is really underrated. I wish it had more attention, you know? Hey, you’re reading this, go watch it if you haven’t! GOOOOOOOOOOO.

Steven Universe (2013 — Ongoing)

(well of course this would be here!)

Do I have to bother with an explaination for this cartoon? Everyone watches it. Gems. Feels. That’s all.

Star vs. The Forces of Evil (2015 — Ongoing)

(TOFFEEEEEEEEE.)

It’s gonna get a little weird. This cartoon is a little wild. The creators acknowledge Starco, so let the shipping BEEEEGIINNNNNN.

Miraculous Ladybug

(LAST ONE!)

AND FINALLY! Miraculous Ladybug! This is the most recent show of 2016, and in CGI! At first, I was doubting about how good it is, but I was really wrong. I loved it, so much. Don’t let the animation fool you. It’s just awesome.

━━━━━━━━━

Conclusion

━━━━━━━━━

Overall, cartoons have existed for a very long time, made from different things and for different purposes. I think this type of media will go on for a very long time, as part of our every day entertainment!

We laugh, we cry, sometimes get angry at the characters. They’re fictional, sure, but who cares? This is story telling. Story telling is made to tell a story. This is no different. If we don’t care about the characters, the story would most likely be bland and boring because we don’t give a crap.

Cartoons are part of our fun.

History of animation

Do you like watching cartoons? Probably you do! But how did they come to be? Who invented1 them?

This is actually a very tough question. The first cartoons were created long before the TV. For example, shadow play2 was a very popular form of entertainment3 in ancient China. Such shows looked almost like modern cartoons!

A toy called a flip book4 was made in the late 19th century. It was a small soft book with pictures. Each picture was drawn in a slightly different5 way.

Using this device, many aspiring6 film directors started to create their own cartoons.

This developed into a full industry by 1910. Many cartoons of that era are forgotten7 now, but some are still with us. For example, Felix the Cat was created by Otto Messmer in 1919, and he’s still with us, more than a hundred years later. Currently the rights8 to the character are held by DreamWorks Animation.

One of the pioneers9 in the industry was famous Walt Disney. He was not afraid to experiment to make a cartoon, and his Snow White film was among the firsts to use a multiplane camera. With its help the characters were able to move around the objects, creating an illusion of a 3D world.

Today most of the cartoons are made with computer animation. The last traditional Disney cartoon to date was Winnie the Pooh (2011).
