Speaker A

I love reading.  I  read detective stories, novels and romantic and fantasy stories. If I am stuck on a train or waiting for something and don’t have anything to read, I feel terrible.  So something that I spend a lot of money on would probably be books.  I always buy a lot of books, magazines and reader’s digests. And I keep all of them at home — my mum says it’s horrible. Also lots of my money goes on audio books. I always share them with friends. It’ s a kind of an exchange.

Speaker B

Oh, you know, shiny things really attract me.  Every time I have some extra , I buy bracelets, rings, earings or necklaces. I wear them everywhere and everyday.  If I am shopping somewhere and there is something flashy shining at me, I usually stop and look and very often  a salesperson can talk me into buying it. It’s crazy, I know. I also love buying books but I don’t spend  so much on them.

Speaker C

Ah, I spend money mostly on… going out, like going to restaurants or clubs, and things like that. I am a party person, I love hanging out with friends. I don’t actually buy a lot of things, like electronics, books, CDs.I just spend money on going out with friends, on food and drinks for parties.  I really love chatting, dancing and making jokes.

Speaker D

Something I probably spend too much on is clothes. I guess because I am a girl. I think of shopping as a fun pastime and I find it relaxing. Actually I call it » shopping therapy» to go and buy some new clothes. I often go alone — I don’t need anyone to advise me. I’d say I love the process  of choosing and buying things. It really makes me feel good.

Speaker E

If i had the money I wanted, I would like to go and spend two weeks at a very famous place on Earth. I love traveling in comfort. Nowadays it’s very expensive. I read travel magazines and surf the Internet for information about different tours, hotels, and sights — and  now I know how I want to travel. That’s what I’d spend my money on if I had.

Speaker F

I usually don’t spend that much money on anything like  jewellery or clothes. But then  if  there is one big expense, it  is food.   I like desserts, especially ice-cream, so when  go out for dinner I definitely have a dessert afterwards. I can’t live without cakes , candies, chocolates and things like that. Who can?

A.

Sure,
we’re virtually connected to our phones 24/7 now, but what if we could be
literally plugged in to our phones? That’s already starting to happen. Last year,
for instance, artist Anthony Antonellis had a chip put in his arm that could
store and transfer data to his handheld smartphone. And researchers arealready
experimenting with sensors that turn human bone into living speakers.

B.

In the
future patients will be able to use implantable technologies to diagnose and
even treat diseases. Scientists in London are developing swallowable capsule-sized
chip that will control fat levels in obese patients and generate genetic
material that makes them feel “full”. It has potential as an alternative to surgery
to handle obesity. Also it can monitor blood-sugar levels for diabetics.

C.

The U.S.
military has programs to identify any person using face scanning device. Some
people see it as a doubtless advantage: improved crime fighting, secure
elections and never a lost child again. However, such technologies can hammer
against social norms and raise privacy issues. And one day there might be a
computer to see all, know all and control all.

D.

One of
the challenges for implantable tech is delivering power to devices which are
inside human bodies. You can’t plug them in as you do with your phone or
computer. You can’t easily take them out to replace a battery. A team in
Cambridge is working on specific bio batteries that can generate power inside
the body, transfer it wirelessly where needed, and then simply melt away.

E.

Soon
tattoos will not only make you look cool but will be able to perform useful
tasks, like opening your car or entering smartphone codes with a fingerpoint. Researchers
have made an implantable skin fibers thinner than a human hair. Scientists are working
on the chip that can be put inside a finger through a tattoo-like process,
letting you unlock things or enter codes simply by pointing.

F.

The
British research team is developing pills with microprocessors in them that can
text to hospitals directly from inside your body. The pills can share inside info
to help doctors know if you are taking your medication properly and if it is having
the desired effect. Moreover, in case of emergency, it can send a signal to the
computer and the ambulance will come straight away.

G.

Lately
touchscreens are everywhere – from computers, phones, tablets to car systems
and vending machines. Even doorbells now include touch screen controls. One has
to wonder: are we moving to a world of only touchscreen devices? And the answer
is probably yes. We are coming to an age where every flat or even curved
surface could be made a touchscreen and we can operate from it.

Speaker
A

I am
not much of a cinema goer but I do enjoy a good film. I usually buy a film

online
and watch it at home. I’ve got a wide screen TV and a projector.

Sometimes,
if I am in the mood, I use it. You feel as if you were in the cinema but

I find
it a bit cozier on my sofa. It’s also a lot cheaper to watch films at home. If
I

invite
some friends, they bring popcorn and drinks and then you really can’t tell the

difference.

Speaker
B

The
cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an

actress.
I would watch all the new musicals and children’s films and dream of

playing
the leading parts. When I was in my last year at school, I took acting

classes
to prepare for the New York Theater and Cinema Academy. After

graduating,
I auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the happiest moment of

my
life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!

Speaker
C

Books
are much more fun than films. I know most film directors want to make a

film
out of some classical book but so often the film versions don’t turn out well.

At
least to my taste. When you watch a film you are forced to believe what you see

and
when you read a book, you can imagine the characters and have your own

personal
experience with the plot. Watching a film just doesn’t trigger your

imagination
the way reading does.

Speaker
D

I
can’t remember the last time I was at the movies. I think it was the day I
broke

my
arm. Crazy as it may be, I broke my arm going to see a new film. My girlfriend

had
asked me to go to the cinema with her, so I bought the tickets for Friday
night.

We
were meeting inside the Star Cinema. It’d been raining hard and the pavement

was
very wet. I was five minutes late for my date, so I hurried up the stairs and

slipped.
The last thing I remembered was the terrible pain in my arm

Speaker
E

I
never miss a new film. I have a notification sent from the local cinema to
inform

me
about any change in their shows. They change the schedule once every two

weeks,
so I go to the cinema every other week. Our local cinema is rather small, so

they
show two or three films at a time. Sometimes I watch a film every day for

three
days in a row to see all that’s new in the market. It does get expensive

sometimes,
but it’s worth it, the way I see it.

Speaker
F

The
theatre has more of an appeal to me than the cinema. I would go to see a play

more
often if they had more theatres around where I live. Local theatre companies

have
only two shows a year and that doesn’t satisfy my appetite, so I travel to

London
to see different shows may be once a month or so. Seeing real threedimensional

people
on stage is a lot more interesting than watching them on the

screen.
I love watching actors’ facial expressions and the interaction between them.

You
have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now
you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.)

This
is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.

(Pause 15
seconds.)

The first maps were drawn by explorers to help them find their way home and
show people where they had been. The maps showed the shape of the land,
distances between places and special features such as caves and old trees.

Nowadays, maps show the towns and villages, and the roads, railways, rivers and
mountains. Symbols are used to show all the different things on a map and there
is a key to explain what the symbols stand for.

Over the centuries, people explored most of the Earth and put together the map
of the world we use today. Maps of the world or large areas are often either
“political” or “physical”. The political map shows territorial borders. The
purpose of the physical map is to show features of geography such as mountains,
soil type or land use including roads, railroads and buildings.

A. The first mentioning of coffee goes as far back as the ninth century. At first, coffee remained largely confined to Ethiopia, where its native beans were first cultivated. But the Arab world began expanding its trade horizons, and the beans moved into northern Africa and were mass-produced. From there, the beans entered the Indian and European markets, and the popularity of the beverage spread.

B. While processing, a coffee bean absorbs heat, and the color shifts from green to yellow and then to varying shades of brown. Depending on the color, the beans are labeled from light to very dark. Darker beans are generally smoother, because they have less fiber content and the flavor is more sugary. Lighter beans have more caffeine, which result in a slight bitterness, and a stronger flavor.

C. Coffee is one of the world’s most widely consumed beverages. People often have it in the morning, when they feel tired or want to stay awake in the evening. Many office workers take a coffee break when they have low energy. It happens because coffee contains caffeine, a bitter, white crystalline chemical that has a vitalizing effect in humans.

D. For the best quality of brewed coffee it is necessary to buy whole beans and grind them before brewing. If you keep an open package of beans in the freezer it remains fresh for a month. Ground coffee should be used up within two weeks and also kept in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator. But an absolutely fresh coffee can be made from green beans that just need to be roasted first.

E. For occasions when one wants to enjoy the flavor of coffee with almost no stimulation, decaffeinated coffee is available. It is processed from beans while they are still green by either soaking beans in hot water or steaming them. Decaffeinated coffee usually loses some flavor over regular coffee, but it looks the same and can easily mislead inexperienced users by its smell and even taste.

F. . The adoption of coffee created a unique social atmosphere that depends heavily upon coffee, espresso in particular. Coffeehouses, the places where people can get together, have traditionally been used not only for drinking coffee, but also as artistic and intellectual centers. For example, caf£s of Paris which are popular tourist attractions because they are also associated with artists, intellectuals and writers.

G. A coffee bean is the seed of the coffee plant, which ripens around eight months after the emergence of the flower, by changing color from green to red, and they should be harvested. In most countries, the coffee crop is picked by hand. After this coffee beans are wet processed and then dried. Finally the last layers of dry skin are removed; the beans are sorted by size and density, roasted and sold to consumers throughout the world.

The Slob’s Holiday

My husband and I went to Reno for our holiday last year. ‘Isn’t that place where people go to get a quickie divorce?’ asked my second son. ‘Yes’, I said, trying to look enigmatic and interesting. ‘You are not getting divorced, are you?’ he asked bluntly.

‘No,’ I said, ‘we are going to an outdoor pursuit trade fair.’ The children sighed with relief and slouched away, muttering things like ‘boring’. I call them children, but they are all grown up. My eldest son has started to develop fine lines around his eyes — fledgling crow’s feet. A terrible sight for any parent to see. Anyway, the piece isn’t about children. It’s about holidays.

The first thing to be said about holidays is that anybody who can afford one should be grateful. The second thing is that planning holidays can be hard work. In our household it starts with somebody muttering, ‘I suppose we ought to think about a holiday.’ This remark is usually made in July and is received glumly, as if the person making it has said T suppose we ought to think about the Bolivian balance of payment problems.’

Nothing much happens for a week and then the potential holiday-makers are rounded up and made to consult their diaries. Hospital appointments are taken into consideration, as are important things to do with work. But other highlights on the domestic calendar, such as the cat’s birthday, are swept aside and eventually two weeks are found. The next decision is the most painful: where?

We travel abroad to work quite a lot but we return tired and weary, so the holiday we are planning is a slob’s holiday: collapse on a sunbed, read a book until the sun goes down, stagger back to hotel room, shower, change into glad rags, eat well, wave good-bye to teenagers, have a last drink on hotel terrace, go to bed and then lie awake and wait for hotel waiters to bring the teenagers from the disco.

I never want to be guided around another monument, as long as I live. I do not want to be told how many bricks it took to build it. I have a short attention span for such details. I do not want to attend a ‘folk evening’ ever, ever again. The kind where men with their trousers tucked into their socks wave handkerchiefs in the direction of women wearing puff-sleeved blouses, long skirts and headscarves.

I also want to live dangerously and get brown. I want my doughy English skin change from white sliced to wheat germ. I like the simple pleasure of removing my watch strap and gazing at the patch of virgin skin beneath.

I don’t want to make new friends — on holidays or in general; I can’t manage the ones I have at home. I do not want to mix with the locals and I have no wish to go into their homes. I do not welcome tourists who come to Leicester into my home. Why should the poor locals in Holidayland be expected to? It’s bad enough that we monopolize their beaches, clog their pavements and spend an hour in a shop choosing a sunhat that costs the equivalent of 75 pence.

So, the slob’s holiday has several essential requirements: a hotel on a sunny beach, good food, a warm sea, nightlife for the teenagers, a big crowd to get lost in, and the absence of mosquitoes.

As I write, we are at the planning stage. We have looked through all the holiday brochures, but they are full of references to ‘hospitable locals’, ‘folk nights’, ‘deserted beaches’, and ‘interesting historical sights’. Not our cup of tea, or glass of sangria, at all.

A. Dance is in my heart, in my blood and in my mind. I dance daily. The seldom-used dining room of my house is now an often-used ballroom. The CD-changer has five discs at the ready: waltz, rock-and-roll, swing, salsa, and tango. Tango is a complex and difficult dance. I take three dancing lessons a week, and I am off to Buenos Aires for three months to feel the culture of tango.

B. Clothes play an important role in my life. My passion for fashion began when I was in elementary school. I attended a private school with uniformed dress code. At first I felt bad that I could not wear what I wanted, but soon I learned to display my creativity and style through shoes and accessories. They can make each of us unique, in a uniform or not.

C. I believe that music has a bigger place in our society than it is given credit for. The single word ‘music’ covers so many styles. Rock bands and classical musicians make listeners get the meaning from the music. Music tells stories about life and death, expresses feelings of love, sadness, anger, guilt, and pain without using words.

D. Even as an eighteen year old young adult, I still feel the magic of Christmas. I believe in a real Christmas tree. My family has had a real Christmas tree every year of my life. When you get home and smell the sweet pine needles, something magical goes into your soul, raises your spirits. Every year we buy a real tree to fully embrace the spirit of Christmas.

E. People often try to get rid of the number thirteen. Many hotels and office buildings across the world do not have a 13th floor! I believe that the number thirteen is not an unlucky number. I was born on January, 13 and do not consider myself unlucky in any way at all! I believe that this number should have all the rights and respect we give the rest of the numbers.

F. Many kids that go to public schools don’t wear a uniform. They like to show off the new expensive clothes and often have trouble picking out outfits for school in the morning. They are more worried about whether their shirt matches the belt, rather than if the homework is completed. I believe that this is a fault of our school system and only causes problems.

G. They say that the music of your youth is the soundtrack of your life. I am 50; I enjoy new artists and new music, but I still find words of wisdom in singles of sixties and seventies, still believe that ‘you can’t always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need,’ that ‘all you need is love’. I like to listen to the songs I grew up with.

Past and present

I believe we are not alone.

Even if I am on the other side of the world from the farmhouse I live in, I still dream of the ancient vines out the window, and the shed out back that my grandfather’s father built in 1870 with eucalyptus trunks. As long as I can recreate these images, A.

All of us need some grounding in our modern world of constant moving, buying, selling, meeting and leaving. Some find constancy in religion, others in friends or community. But we need some daily signposts that we are not different, not better, B.

For me, this house, farm, these ancient vines are those roots. Although I came into this world alone and will leave alone, I am not alone.

There are ghosts of dozens of conversations in the hallways, stories I remember about buying new plows that now rust in the barnyard and ruined crops from the same vines C.

All of us are natural links in a long chain of being, and that I need to know what time of day it is, what season is coming, whether the wind is blowing north or from the east, and if the moon is still full tomorrow night, D.

The physical world around us constantly changes, E

. We must struggle in our brief existence to find some transcendent meaning and so find relief in the knowledge F

You may find that too boring, living with the past as present. I find it refreshing. There is an old answer to every new problem, that wise whispers of the past are with us. If we just listen and remember, we are not alone; we have been here before.

1. I never quite leave home

2. But human nature does not

3. That we are now harvesting

Unleashing the power of creativity

I have always been an optimist and I suppose that is rooted in my belief that the power of creativity and intelligence can make the world a better place. And the life did not disappoint me — many times it proved me right.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved learning new things and solving problems. So when I sat down at a computer for the first time in the seventh grade, I was hooked. It was a clunky old Teletype machine and it could barely do anything compared to the computers we have today. But it changed my life.

When my friend Paul Alien and I started Microsoft 30 years ago, we had a vision of ‘a computer on every desk and in every home’, which probably sounded a little too optimistic at a time when most computers were the size of refrigerators and cost as much as a new modern Japanese car. But we believed that personal computers would change the world. And they have.

And now, after 30 years, I am still as inspired by computers as I was back in the seventh grade.

I believe that computers are the most incredible tool we can use to feed our curiosity and inventiveness — to help us solve problems that even the smartest people could not solve on their own.

Computers have transformed how we learn, giving kids everywhere a window into All of the world’s knowledge. And the only thing these youngsters should do is make the right choice, which is not always an easy choice. Computers are helping us build communities around the things we care about and to stay close to the people who are important to us, no matter where they live — next door or on the other side of the world.

Like my friend Warren Buffett, I feel particularly lucky to do something every day that I love doing. He calls it ‘tap-dancing to work’. My job at Microsoft is as challenging as ever, but what makes me ‘tap-dance to work’ is when we show people something new, like a computer that can recognize your handwriting or your speech, or gestures, or one that can store a lifetime’s worth of photos or home videos and they say, ‘I didn’t know you could do that with a PC!’

But for all the cool things that a person can do with a PC, there are lots of other ways we can put our creativity and intelligence to work to improve our world. There are still far too many people in the world whose most basic needs go unmet. Every year, for example, millions of people die from diseases that are easy to prevent or treat in the developed world.

I believe that my own good fortune brings with it a responsibility to give back to the world. My wife, Melinda, and I have committed ourselves to improving health and education in a way that can help as many people as possible.

As a father, I believe that the death of a child in Africa is no less bitter or tragic than the death of a child anywhere else. And that it does not take much to make an immense difference in these children’s lives.

I am still very much an optimist, and I believe that progress on even the world’s toughest problems is possible — and it is happening every day. We are seeing new drugs for deadly diseases, new diagnostic tools, and new attention paid to the health problems in the developing world.

I am excited by the possibilities I see for medicine. And I believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity and willingness to solve tough problems, we are going to see some amazing achievements in this area in my lifetime.

A15The narrator considers himself an optimist as he

1) has a strong religious belief.

2) believes in the power of human mind.

3) believes the world is perfect.

4) knows how to develop one’s creativity.

A16 After the narrator first used a computer he

1) got fascinated with its size.

2) used it to solve his problems.

3) could no longer do without it.

4) was amazed at its unlimited possibilities.

A17 The initial dream of the narrator and his friend proved to be

1) naive. 3) wishful thinking.

2) manageable. 4) optimistic but unreal.

A18 The narrator believes that computers are perfect to

1) be human friends.

2) create new fields of knowledge.

3) provide people with creative ideas.

4) be used as an instrument to solve human problems.

A19 The narrator ‘tap-dances to work’ because he enjoys

1) meeting new people.

2) watching dancing contests.

3) teaching people basic computer skills.

4) doing his job very much.

A20 The narrator believes that

1) a lot of people in the world need help.

2) it is impossible to make the world better.

3) people in the world have too many needs.

4) the computer is the only way to improve the world.

A21 The narrator predicts the development of new

1) unknown diseases. 3) technologies in medicine.

2) methods in education. 4) creative ways of thinking.

Speaker A. Nowadays more and more companies show their products on the Internet. So, if there’s anything I need I can see where to get it and what it will cost without leaving home. I can also compare prices, which helps me to save money. Besides, I can buy the things I need online and they will be delivered to me which saves me a lot of time.

Speaker В.With the help of the Internet I can chat with different people from different countries, learn more and more about our world, different lifestyles and thinking. The Internet offers a place where we can communicate with each other. By exchanging ideas, learning other peoples’ customs and traditions, we get to know people from all over the world and how our life compares to other people’s lives in other countries.

Speaker С. I work all by myself doing translations. I find contacts on the web by publishing my advertisement on different Internet sites. Then I get texts from customers by e-mail, and return the completed translation to them. And when doing translations I use all kinds of on-line dictionaries. I also get paid through the Internet, so it saves me a lot of time.

Speaker D. There is a lot of information and things on the Internet. But many of them can hurt other people easily. The Internet has a risk of receiving spy programs or viruses, which can damage your computer. Moreover, you can meet bad people when chatting. According to crime statistics, there have been many people who suffered because of chatting to people they didn’t know.

Speaker E. I used to chat on the Internet because I wanted to improve my English. Then I started to write in forums because I think that there you can get to know very intelligent people and share your interests. From my research, I think the best way to learn English over the Internet is to chat online. You can also find some tests on the Internet and check your progress.

Speaker F. The Internet has a wide variety of information such as data, pictures, graphs, film or book reviews and suchlike. For example, instead of going to a library you can search the Internet at home and find information for a report, an essay or anything you need in no time. Also, the Internet has lots of news from all over the world, so it’s easy to find out what’s going on. So, it is very helpful for people of different age groups.

Speaker A. All my friends from private school are snobbish now because they moved from the state school I go to. I don’t understand why everyone thinks private schools are better. I’m not saying I have anything against private schools, but it does make me a bit upset when I see all the people that used to go to state school acting snobbish because of a silly little thing like having more lessons in biology, physics and chemistry than I have in my school.

Speaker В. I hated my state school that I went to when I was younger. But don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against state schools in general. I know I was just unlucky. My brother and sister stayed at a state school right up until their final exams. They both got really good grades, which proves that private school education isn’t better for everyone. As for me, I found that people were friendlier in my private school, and I felt a lot happier. I know this is not always the case, because my brother and sister enjoyed going to the state school.

Speaker С. Well, I would like to say, I go to a private school and I was shocked at how much some people take for granted. One of my classmates got a plasma screen TV for her birthday and a laptop for Christmas, and she just spoke about them as if they were ordinary presents, nothing special. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it, just sometimes if you have a lot of money, it is important to remember that you are lucky, because some families are so poor that they have no money to buy a TV-set in the sales.

Speaker D. A lot of people who go to my private school are not that rich at all. My parents just wanted the best education for me and this school was the right choice. Smaller classes are much better, I found this from my own experience. Here we do separate sciences and I think it allows people to understand which sciences they like and see which they are good at. You can also study physics, chemistry and biology in much more detail as well as languages, history and so on.

Speaker E. I go to private school, and we have to wear a uniform and I know why we have to have it. If the people in my school didn’t have to wear it then they would come to school in too short skirts or torn trousers. And you always get the people who can come into school and look almost like Halloween, with make up running down their faces and chains hanging off every place. Not the right things to wear to school I think. School uniform disciplines pupils and makes them look nice and clean.

Speaker F. I go to a busy city centre school, I think there are about 1100 pupils and about 120 teachers. The corridors are really narrow in some of the buildings and there are crowds of pupils running and pushing when the bell goes and everyone is there. One of the corridors is so narrow that we have a ‘one way system’. The school definitely needs broader corridors as well as larger classrooms.

Speaker A. For my work practice I worked at Middle School. Over the two weeks I watched the teachers and worked with the children. I interacted with the pupils and helped encourage them to learn during their lessons. Teaching and working with children was much harder than I expected it to be, it isn’t a simple job. A full classroom of children can be very hard to control, so I have total respect for teachers now.

Speaker В. For my work practice I worked at the City Hospital. I think it is good to get some work experience because we get to see what it is like to work somewhere. I had a lot of different jobs to do: I helped make beds, take people’s pulse and blood pressure, make tea or coffee for the patients in the ward, serve lunches at lunchtime and get people’s notes ready. I enjoyed talking to the patients, bringing a smile to their faces.

Speaker С. I worked at a big store. I really didn’t enjoy myself and I think it was really a waste of time. During the day I worked from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. putting products on shelves. I got a morning break, a lunch hour and an afternoon break which was very good! Some of the time I was able to work on the customer help desk in the store. I wasn’t given much responsibility and wasn’t taught anything new during the day.

Speaker D. Now I am working in a department store and I like it but I clearly remember my first impressions. They were like OH MY GOD look how long I have to work and OH MY GOD I have to wear a horrible looking uniform! I was really afraid to call the store to arrange my first visit. But after I had spoken to the manager and she had answered all my questions some of my fears were gone.

Speaker E. I worked at a graphics company. During my two weeks I basically did nothing except helping the staff to deliver things and collect equipment. The worst part of my work experience was at the beginning when I didn’t have a lot to do. I was sitting watching people work, but as the days went on, I was given more responsibility. I really enjoyed my time at work practice and found it really interesting.

Speaker F. I worked with children, helping out in Physical Education classes during the day and attending clubs and matches after school. The children were aged between 9 and 13. My best moment was helping children to play cricket. I really enjoy sport and enjoy the interaction with others. So working with children or something to do with sports is what I would like to do when I become an adult.

Speaker A. I really loved my high school but it was a time when I was having a lot of arguments and fights at home. So school was the place where I went to escape from all my problems and I really worked hard. I stayed at school long hours. I didn’t want to go home. And I loved my teachers and a lot of us are still friends. So, yeah, high school was great.

Speaker В. High school was quite a good experience for me really. My high school wasn’t a fantastic school, just an ordinary one. But I had lots of fun, made lots of good friends, learned how to communicate and how to avoid conflicts. Yeah, I think I came out of it able to deal with life problems.

Speaker С. High school for me was, well, quite dull although they call it formative years. I enjoyed my senior year because I didn’t go to high school as often as I did before my senior year. Overall, I didn’t do much and didn’t learn much either. So my high school was a little difficult and a little strange.

Speaker D. OK, I think I loved my high school. That was the best part of my whole school life because I had my best friends there and a bunch of good teachers, a lot of hard work and studies, happy and sad moments. And it was fantastic. Also we had our final exams in high school. It was really tough, but I had great friends in my class so we did a lot of joint studying and were really successful.

Speaker E. I loved high school. I absolutely loved it. I can’t even describe it. I grew up in a town of 1,000 people and so my whole graduating class was 35 people who I had known since my childhood and we were all very, very close, like, maybe, brothers or

sisters. And still my best friends are two people from my high school. The years spent at high school were the happiest.

Speaker F. I have to admit, I loved high school. I thought high school was the best. It’s a really good time, you know. You play sports, you’re in clubs, you hang out with your friends, but what I remember most about high school though, is that I thought it would never end. I mean at that point, you’ve been in school your entire life and I remember thinking, ‘You know what, I’m always going to be a student. They’re never going to let me out of school.’ But eventually they did.

Speaker A. I’ve always read books for comfort, and when I was in London, as a participant of an exchange programme, scared and lost, so far from my family and friends, I simply found a book store and bought the first two Harry Potter books there. I read them both in one night and then over and over again. It wasn’t just comfort, it was like I found a good friend in a place where I had none, and I certainly became braver.

Speaker В. Harry Potter books have influenced me greatly. They helped me to understand that honesty, friendship and love are all we need. Now I look at the future in a more positive way than I had done before reading these books which speak’ about friendship. Harry Potter is never alone. When he does something difficult or frightening, his friends are always around and they give him all the help he needs.

Speaker С. The best thing Harry Potter books have given me is a philosophy for life. I found it in the words of Harry himself, his friends and other people around him. When I face problems, I remember some phrases from the books and I keep on fighting. I don’t give up, because Harry never does. I’ve known before, that theoretically there is no such a thing as a hopeless situation, but now I truly believe it.

Speaker D. I’ve always liked reading. And I love the fact that Harry Potter books have given me my own private magical world. When I read Harry Potter, I feel so glad that I have a wonderful secret that no one else knows. I get the feeling that the books put everything around me into a different, magical light, and the world of Harry Potter comes into mine, making ordinary things and people look strange.

Speaker E. Before I read Harry Potter books, and became interested in them, I didn’t read too much. I just didn’t understand what books could do. But after reading Harry Potter, I felt that I was in his world, and I thought, well, maybe other books can do that too. Now I just love reading, and the pleasure that I get from reading has become possible only because of that first Harry Potter book.

Speaker F. Harry Potter books have helped me in many ways. For example, last year I had to take my final exams and I was under a lot of stress because of that. Harry. Potter characters also have a lot of exams and when I felt especially stressed and worried, I read those passages from the books and felt a little better, as if I was sharing my problems with friends. And the funny moments in the books cheered me up.

Speaker 1
Ninety-eight per cent of us in Britain have a TV set in our homes and, according to the experts, we rarely turn it off. In fact, the average viewer watches as much as 25 hours a week. Television informs, educates and entertains people. It also influences the way people look at the world and makes them change their views.
Speaker 2
Primary school teachers are complaining of youngsters’ inability to concentrate and their need to be constantly entertained. Some students do their homework in front of the television set. Others rush through their homework so they can watch television. It would seem that too much TV is to blame.
Speaker 3
Watching too much TV can lead to the ‘lodger’ syndrome. Some husbands come home, sit in front of the TV and simply don’t communicate with their families at all. Even when programmes contain nothing negative, it’s not really a good thing for so many families to spend whole evenings glued to the box.
Speaker 4
However, there is another side to the picture. For the lonely, elderly or housebound, television can be a good thing, being a cheap and convenient form of entertainment and a ‘friendly face’ in the house. It can be an ideal way to relax, without necessarily turning you into a TV addict.
Speaker 5
Television doesn’t just entertain, of course. There are times when it can be informative and can provide a source of good family conversation, e. g. TV programmes featuring various cultural, historical, political and artistic issues. For example, The National Geographic documentaries have recently become very popular.
Speaker 6
Informative, useful, entertaining and relaxing — and yes, banal and boring — television is all of these. But if we’re not selective, surely we have only ourselves to blame. TV can be a part of family life, but when it becomes all of it, maybe that’s the time to reach for the ‘off’ switch.

The Lifestyle of a Rock Star

Interviewer: Around the world young people are spending unbelievable sums of money to listen to rock music. “Forbes Magazine” claims that at least fifty rock stars have incomes of between two million and six million dollars per year. Today we’ll discuss the lifestyle of rock stars with the person who knows all about it, MTV producer Jack Jackson.
Jack Jackson: “It doesn’t make sense,” says Johnny Mathis, one of the older music millionaires, who made a million dollars a year when he was most popular, in the 1950s. “Performers aren’t worth this kind of money. In fact, nobody is.” But the rock stars’ admirers seem to disagree. Those who love rock music spend about two billion dollars a year for records. They pay 150 million to see rock stars in person.
Interviewer: Some observers think the customers are buying more than music.
Jack Jackson: Absolutely. Rock music has a special appeal because no real training is needed to produce it. There is no gulf between the audience and the performer. Every boy and girl in the audience thinks, “I could sing like that.” So rock has become a new kind of religion, a new form of worship. Young people are glad to pay to worship a rock star because it is a way of worshipping themselves.
Interviewer: Luck is a key word for explaining the success of many. In 1972 one of the luckiest was Don McLean, who wrote and sang “American Pie.” Mc Lean earned more than a million dollars from recordings of “American Pie.”
Jack Jackson: Well, records provide only part of a star’s income. Around the world young listeners soon want to see the star in movies, on television, and in person.
Neil Young, who performs in torn blue jeans, sometimes sings to an audience of 10,000, each of whom has paid at least fifteen dollars for a ticket. After paying expenses, Young leaves with about $120,000 in his pocket at the end of an evening.
Interviewer: How do the rock stars use their money? What do they do when the money starts pouring in like water?
Jack Jackson: Most young stars simply throw their money around. England’s Elton John gave someone a $38,000 Rolls-Royce automobile and bought himself a $5,000 pair of eyeglasses that light up and spell E-L-TO-N. He also bought himself two cars, “one for each foot.” In the end, a rock star’s life is unrewarding. After two or three years riches and fame are gone. Left with his memories, and his tax problems, the lonely ex-performer spends his remaining years trying to impress strangers. New stars have arrived to take his place.

2. Now read the text and think of your 5 questions to grandmother Alaine.

Grandmother Elaine

Interviewer: My grandmother grew up on a farm in Nebraska. I wanted to interview her not only because she has a great story, but also to learn more about her past. I will try to make it a real interview, not just a chat with a grandma. So, my first question: What is your name and birthplace?
Grandmother: I go by Elaine, but my real name is Helen Elaine. I was born April 8, 1933 in Guide Rock, Nebraska on a farm. I had an older sister and two younger brothers.
Interviewer: Why do you go by your middle name?
Grandmother: My mother, my dad’s sister, and my uncle’s wife were all named Helen. Can you imagine the chaos! I chose to be called Elaine so that I wouldn’t be confused during family get-togethers.
Interviewer: What was your school like?
Grandmother: Well, the stories you hear your parents tell were actually true… we walked three miles to school and three miles back! During the summer the walk wasn’t bad, but in winter our feet would freeze! When we got to the one-room schoolhouse, I remember my teacher would always bring me a bucket of warm water to soak my feet. Boy, was I lucky! Since it only had one room, we interacted with the older kids, which was nice because we got to hear them recite.
Interviewer: When you got home, did you have chores to do?
Grandmother: Of course! We all had specific tasks. My sister and I cleaned the dining room, which had hardwood floors like every room in the house. I was always upset because I had to wax the floors on my hands and knees and dust the furniture! My sister, since she was older, only had to dust the shelves. After our chores were done, we sat down as a family to eat. Then, I had to dry the dishes. My father always sent me to my room for bed at 6:30. I was never able to figure out what you would call my room. I guess you could call it a closet!
Interviewer: What was high school like?
Grandmother: Well, we finally had a bus to ride that I caught every morning at seven a.m. In high school there were no athletics for girls. Boys had football, basketball and track. There were school dances, but not quite as fancy as the ones you have. I never really had enough rhythm to dance, but I tried!
Interviewer: Did you ever get to go to college?
Grandmother: My parents never mentioned college to me because we had no money. After high school I worked at the Farmers Union Creamery as a secretary. One day my boss came to see me and told me that I was going to college. I was confused and said, “No, I’m not, we can’t afford it.”
He made the arrangements and drove me to a college 150 miles away. I still do not know where the money came from. My major was home economics education. As a student, I worked at the creamery, and also at the cafeteria at the school.
Interviewer: Did you follow through with your teaching career?
Grandmother: Yes, I was a home economics teacher for 30 years.
Interviewer: After all your struggles, did you build a family?
Grandmother: Yes, I married a nice man and had five lovely kids and I now have nine beautiful grandchildren. I am very proud of my family. There were many funny times when my children were growing up. Once your Uncle Danny told your Aunt Cathy that the cigarette lighter in the car smelled like cherries and she burnt her nose. At the time those moments weren’t as funny as they are now when we look back on them. All of this was worth the problems I struggled with growing up.

A. Little is known for certain about how guinea pigs were first introduced to Europe and North America as a domestic pet, but they most probably came during the 16th century. Holland, Portugal and Spain had colonies in South America, and the explorers brought to Europe gold and precious gems, along with other unusual and exciting finds. Colourful parrots became very popular status symbols in the homes of the wealthy, and with them came the guinea pig and other animals previously unknown in Europe.

B. Many species of wild animals are in danger of complete extinction. This is usually due to loss of habitat as a result of human expansion, or it could be due to excessive hunting. A good, modern zoo has a valuable role to play in assisting with the protection of endangered species. This is both through education of the general public in the importance of conservation in general, and through breeding programmes to increase the population of endangered species in captivity and then reintroduce them into the wild.

C. The guinea pig is today one of the world’s most popular pets, ranking only a little way behind the rabbit. Though called guinea pigs, these animals are not pigs, nor do they come from Guinea. Why Guinea, then? Some say they could have originally changed hands at the cost of a guinea (twenty-one shillings — very expensive!). As for the “pig”, an explanation is much easier to guess — they run and squeal much as little piglets do!

D. Rabbits are among the most popular pets to keep due to their affectionate nature and love of cuddles. To show they are happy, they often grind their teeth softly when being petted, similar to cats purring. In general, rabbits are timid, non-aggressive and sociable with each other. With gentle handling they are generally quite tame. They are playful and entertaining to watch, but they need a great deal of interaction with their owners. Their cage should be relatively big, but they need some playtime outside it as well.

E. For a long time guinea pigs were used as experimental animals. In 1890, the antitoxin for diphtheria was discovered using guinea pigs in the research, and as a result the lives of millions of children have been saved. In 1907 vitamin С was discovered due to guinea pigs. Like humans they cannot produce the vitamin and need it supplied in their diet. The guinea pig’s wide variety of hair types and colours has also made them a prime choice for studies of genetics and heredity. Later they were replaced by rats and mice.

F. Security at Denver International Airport tries to protect cars from vandalism and theft, but there’s a new threat at its expansive parking lot. Ravenous rabbits. The animals are causing hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars in damage to cars by devouring the wires under the hood. At least 100 rabbits are removed every month, but the problem persists. The airport is surrounded by prairie, and the rabbits are seeking warmth and food in the parked vehicles.

Have you ever thought about cities of the future? Clean streets, flying cars and robots doing all the work? Almost half of the world’s population currently lives in cities, and by 2050 that is predicted to increase to 75%, but what kind of city will they be living in? Today, most city dwellers are dissatisfied because they have to live in overcrowded and polluted surroundings. Traffic jams are getting worse, queues longer, power cuts more common, bad air quality more threatening to human health.
There are various ideas about how a future city should look. Some of these revolve around the idea that better means greener. Experts predict carbon-neutral cities full of electric vehicles and bike-sharing schemes, with air quality so much improved that office workers can actually open their windows for the first time. Visions of a green city often include skyscrapers where living and office space comprises high-rise green-houses and vegetables growing on the roofs. Behind such greenification of cities lies a very pressing need.
Technology companies such as IBM believe that the best cities will become networks. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, IBM has already built an operations centre, which it describes as the “nerve centre” of the city.

The history of radio
Radio started with the discovery of “radio waves”. Radio waves are electromagnetic waves that can transmit music, speech, pictures and other data 26) invisibly through the air.
Many devices work by using electromagnetic waves, including radio, microwaves, cordless phones, remote controlled toys, television broadcasts, and more.
During the 1860s, Scottish physicist, J.C. Maxwell predicted the 27) existence of radio waves.
In 1886, German 28) scientist, H.R. Hertz demonstrated that rapid variations of electric current could be projected into space in the form of radio waves.
G. Marconi, an Italian 29) inventor, sent and received his first radio signal in Italy in 1895.
By 1899 he flashed the first 30) wireless signal across the English Channel and two years later received the letter “S”, telegraphed from England to Newfoundland.
This was the first 31) successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message.

Tests and test-takers
You don’t have to be a psychologist to guess how students are feeling during a test or an exam. Just by observing their body language you can tell whether they will pass or 32) fail.
Just before the test starts, they will often 33) tell silly things and try nervously to hide their nervousness. A little tension or stress before and during a test is normal. When the examinees get their papers, some of them will 34) smile to themselves — a sure sign they know the answers. 35) However, if they feel the exam is hard, you may hear how disappointed they are or see how annoyed they are when they frown. Some will try to glance quickly at their neighbours’ tests, and some will yawn to pretend that they are bored or tired, while, in fact, they are just waiting for the teacher to turn 36) away so that one of their mates can quietly 37) whisper the answers to them. When they finish, some will immediately dash out as if they were desperate to check their answers in their course book, while others will 38) stroll out slowly, relaxed and sure they have passed.

A) Walt Disney was born in Chicago, his father being Irish Canadian, his mother of German-American origin. He revealed a talent for drawing and an interest in photography early on and after service with the American Red Cross in the First World War. He was a man with a vision and he had a dream, so in 1923 he and his brother Roy left for Hollywood and for some years struggled against poverty while producing a series of cartoon films.

В) The first successful cartoons of Walt Disney were made only in the late 1920s. In 1927 he had some success with the series called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but it was not until September 1928, when Steamboat Willie appeared, the first Mickey Mouse with sound, that he achieved lasting success. Mickey Mouse became a household name together with such companions as Minnie, Pluto, and, perhaps the most popular of them all, Donald Duck.

С) When you think about Walt Disney’s cartoons, The Three Little Pigs and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with their still familiar songs by Frank Churchill immediately spring to mind. And it’s no wonder! There is much music in all the cartoons of Walt Disney. His characters sing beautiful songs which greatly add to the cartoon’s incredible charm and they are loved and sung by thousands of children worldwide.

D) After the Second World War Disney turned his attention to real-life nature studies and non-cartoon films with living actors. After a rather unsuccessful feature cartoon The Sleeping Beauty, he made a triumphant come-back with the very successful Mary Poppins. He always worked hard to achieve success and he wasn’t upset with failures if they happened. Disney tried and tried again and finally he always got what he wanted.

E) In 1955 Walt Disney branched out into a different enterprise Disneyland, a huge amusement park in southern California. Disneyland is situated 27 miles south of Los Angeles. Of all the show-places none is as famous as Disneyland. This superb kingdom of fantasy linked to technology was created by Walt Disney. The park is divided into six themes and there is so much to see and do in each that no one would attempt to see all of them in one visit.

F) Walt Disney died in California at the age of 65, but he’ll never be forgotten. His works have given so much pleasure for many years to many people, young and old, in many countries. But it was not the end of the story. Today the Disney empire produces not only films and cartoons. Maria Curie
Maria Curie was born in Warsaw on November 7th, 1867. Her father taught science and mathematics at school, and from him little Maria Sklodovska — her Polish name — had her first lessons in science.
Maria wanted to study at Sorbonne University, and after many years of waiting she finally left her native land for Paris in 1891. In Paris Maria began a course of hard study and simple living. She determined to work for two Master’s degrees — one in physics, the other in mathematics. So she had to work twice as hard as any other student. She did not have enough money to live on, and soon her strength was weakened because she had no proper food. She lived in a small room in the poorest part of Paris. Night after night after her hard day’s work at the university Maria would climb to her poorly furnished room and work at her books for hours, but nothing could deter the young woman from her chosen path.

The hour-hand is 9 feet long.
The clock bell 23) got its name Big Ben from Sir Benjamin Hall. He had the job of putting the bell up. Sir Benjamin was a big man. On the 24) first day of the Parliament session he said, ‘Shall we call the bell St. Stephen’s?’ St. Stephen’s was the name of the tower.
But someone shouted, ‘Why not call it Big Ben?’ as a joke, and now the bell 25) is known all over the world by that name.
A lot of people say it’s the 26) most beautiful place in London — so come and visit!

A. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.

B. The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause. Some geologists suggest that a large meteor hitting the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all over the world. This idea is fascinating but it would mean the dinosaurs would all have died within a very short time.

C. In 1948, a British farmer discovered an interesting lump of metal while ploughing his field. At first he thought the metal bits were parts of an old bed. Then more ‘parts of old beds’ turned up and the farmer took them to the local museum. ‘But these bits are priceless!’ exclaimed the keeper of the museum. ‘They are Iron Age jewellery and coins!’ Over the next 40 years, more and more items were found in the same field.

D. Rats may have had a bit of a hard time over the years but these days lots of people are forgetting about guinea-pigs and hamsters and are buying rats instead. Domestic rats aren’t the same as the ones that run around rubbish bins — they’re actually quite cute. They are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They come in different colours and — a big bonus — they will eat anything!

E. In Western cultures, people look each other in the eye during a conversation to show interest and trust, but in many Asian countries, it’s rude to look people in the eye, especially a superior such as a teacher. One of the most basic and powerful signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others.

F. Earthquakes happen all the time in all parts of the world but we don’t notice most of them because they are small. However, big earthquakes are really dangerous. They can make buildings fall down, set off landslides and do other deadly things. The highest death toll caused by an earthquake was in China in 1556, when at least 830,000 people died.

G. According to scientists, Americans watch more TV on average than any other nationality. In fact, many people, particularly children, sit for 35 hours or more per week glued to the box. What’s wrong with watching all that TV? Studies have linked it to everything from obesity to aggression in children not to mention that it puts your mind into a sort of sedated state. Habitual television watching, over long periods of time, has been known to cause depression, and anger.

‘Have you written a letter to the Froplinsons?’ asked Egbert.

‘No,’ said Janetta, with a note of tired defiance in her voice; ‘I’ve written eleven letters today expressing surprise and gratitude for sundry unmerited gifts, but I haven’t written to the Froplinsons yet.’

‘Someone will have to do it,’ said Egbert.

‘I don’t dispute the necessity, but I don’t think that someone should be me,’ said Janetta. ‘I wouldn’t mind writing a letter of angry recrimination or heartless satire to some suitable recipient. In fact, I should rather enjoy it, but I’ve come to the end of my capacity for expressing servile amiability. Eleven letters today and nine yesterday, all couched in the same strain of ecstatic thankfulness: really, you can’t expect me to sit down to another. There is such a thing as writing oneself out.’

‘I’ve written nearly as many,’ said Egbert, ‘and I’ve had my usual business correspondence to get through, too. Besides, I don’t know what it was that the Froplinsons sent us.’ ‘A William the Conqueror calendar,’ said Janetta, ‘with a quotation of one of his great thoughts for every day in the year.’

‘Impossible,’ said Egbert; ‘he didn’t have three hundred and sixty-five thoughts in the whole of his life, or, if he did, he kept them to himself.’

‘Well, it was William Wordsworth, then,’ said Janetta; ‘I know William came into it somewhere.’

‘That sounds more probable,’ said Egbert; ‘well, let’s collaborate on this letter and get it done. I’ll dictate, and you can scribble it down. ‘Dear Mrs. Froplinson, thank you and your husband so much for the very pretty calendar you sent us. It was very good of you to think of us.’ ’

‘You can’t possibly say that,’ said Janetta, laying down her pen. ‘We sent them something on the twenty-second,’ said Janetta, ‘so they simply had to think of us. There was no getting away from it.’

‘What did we send them?’ asked Egbert gloomily.

‘Bridge-markers,’ said Janetta, ‘in a cardboard case, with some inanity about ‘digging for fortune with a royal spade’ emblazoned on the cover. The moment I saw it in the shop I said to myself ‘Froplinsons’ and to the attendant ‘How much?’ When he said ‘Ninepence,’ I gave him their address, jabbed our card in, paid tenpence or elevenpence to cover the postage, and thanked heaven. With less sincerity and infinitely more trouble they eventually thanked me.’

‘The Froplinsons don’t play bridge,’ said Egbert.

‘One is not supposed to notice social deformities of that sort,’ said Janetta; ‘it wouldn’t be polite. Besides, what trouble did they take to find out whether we read Wordsworth with gladness? For all they knew or cared we might be frantically embedded in the belief that all poetry begins and ends with John Masefield, and it might infuriate or depress us to have a daily sample of Wordsworthian products flung at us.’

‘Well, let’s get on with the letter,’ said Egbert. ‘How clever of you to guess that Wordsworth is our favourite poet.’

Again Janetta laid down her pen.

‘Do you realise what that means?’ she asked; ‘a Wordsworth booklet next Christmas, and another calendar the Christmas after, with the same problem of having to write suitable letters of thankfulness. No, the best thing to do is to drop all further allusion to the calendar and switch off on to some other topic.’

‘But what other topic?’

‘Oh, something like this: ‘What do you think of the New Year Honours List? A friend of ours made such a clever remark when he read it.’ Then you can stick in any remark that comes into your head; it needn’t be clever. The Froplinsons won’t know whether it is or isn’t.’

‘We don’t even know on which side they are in politics,’ objected Egbert; ‘and anyhow you can’t suddenly dismiss the subject of the calendar. Surely there must be some intelligent remark that can be made about it.’

‘Well, we can’t think of one,’ said Janetta wearily; ‘the fact is, we’ve both written ourselves out.’

There was a long silence, the forlorn silence of those who are bereft of hope and have almost ceased to care. Then Egbert started from his seat with an air of resolution. The light of battle was in his eyes.

‘Let me come to the writing-table,’ he exclaimed; ‘I’m going to write to the editor of every enlightened and influential newspaper in the Kingdom, I’m going to suggest that there should be a sort of epistolary Truce of God during the festivities of Christmas and New Year. From the twenty-fourth of December to the third or fourth of January it shall be considered an offence against good sense and good feeling to write or expect any letter or communication that does not deal with the necessary events of the moment. Answers to invitations, arrangements about trains, renewal of club subscriptions, and, of course, all the ordinary everyday affairs of business, sickness, engaging new cooks, and so forth, these will be dealt with in the usual manner as something inevitable. But all the devastating accretions of correspondence, incident to the festive season, these should be swept away to give the season a chance of being really festive.’

‘But you would have to make some acknowledgment of presents received,’ objected Janetta; ‘otherwise people would never know whether they had arrived safely.’

‘Of course, I have thought of that,’ said Egbert; ‘every present that was sent off would be accompanied by a ticket bearing the date of dispatch and the signature of the sender, and some conventional hieroglyphic to show that it was intended to be a Christmas or New Year gift; there would be a counterfoil with space for the recipient’s name and the date of arrival, and all you would have to do would be to sign and date the counterfoil, add a conventional hieroglyphic indicating heartfelt thanks and gratified surprise, put the thing into an envelope and post it.’

‘It sounds delightfully simple,’ said Janetta wistfully, ‘but people would consider it too perfunctory.’

‘It is not a bit more perfunctory than the present system,’ said Egbert; ‘I have only the same conventional language of gratitude at my disposal with which to thank dear old Colonel Chuttle for his perfectly delicious Stilton, which we shall devour to the last morsel, and the Froplinsons for their calendar, which we shall never look at. So you see the present system of acknowledgment is just as perfunctory and conventional as the counterfoil business would be, only ten times more tiresome and brain-racking.’

‘Your plan would certainly bring the idea of a Happy Christmas a step nearer realisation,’ said Janetta. ‘Meanwhile, what am I to say to the Froplinsons?’

  • понимание основного содержания прослушанного текста;
  • понимание в прослушанном тексте запрашиваемой информации или определение в нем ее отсутствия;

1. In this city you pay practically nothing for renting a bike
2. It’s basically OK but I’m not sure they use proper bikes
3. I don’t use bikes but I like the cycling system in that city
4. Riding a bike is, first of all, a very healthy habit
5. I find the system useful though I don’t bike very often
6. The bikes they use here are not good for the hilly area
7. The politicians there are against biking and bikers.

Speaker A. The city bike system in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is very well developed. The bicycles have motors to help you go uphill, and you get them out of the locked stands by leaving a deposit. There are different ways to pay and the cost is low. I can’t bike myself because I don’t have a good sense of balance but I saw lots of those bikes last summer when I visited Helsinki.

The city bike system in Helsinki … is very well developed.

I can’t bike myself

 3. I like the cycling system in that city

I don’t use bikes

3 — I don’t use bikes but I like the cycling system in that city.

Speaker B. Glasgow’s city bike system is terrible. Big, heavy London style bikes in a city built on a series of steep hills? We should have mountain bikes the same way they do in places with a similar geography (like in Norway). The bicycle lanes are terrible as well. The whole system was obviously designed by those who have never cycled in the city. The worst part is that the money has been spent now and we won’t get it back.

Big, heavy London style bikes in a city built on a series of steep hills? We should have mountain bikes

 6. The bikes   …  are not good for the hilly area

6 — The bikes they use here are not good for the hilly area.

Speaker C. In Hamburg the first half hour is free. Most journeys take maximum half an hour or less. You pay a nominal fee of €5 to register but this becomes credit for your first journey. Thus, the system is effectively free. If you do go over half an hour it’s 6c or 8c a minute to a maximum of €12. The bikes are of excellent quality. They even have children’s bikes in different sizes if you are travelling with your parents which I often do!

In Hamburg the first half hour is free. Most journeys take maximum half an hour or less.

 1. In this city you pay practically nothing for renting a bike

1 — In this city you pay practically nothing for renting a bike.

Speaker D. In Sydney, Australia, the city bike system is a complete failure. Why? We have a corrupt state Liberal National Party government that fights a bike-friendly progressive council at every turn. We also have a Murdoch Sydney tabloid called ‘The Daily Telegraph’ which demonises bicycle riders and bike infrastructure. God knows who they represent or who is paying them… extremely dumb big business? It’s basically bicycle rider’s hell.

a corrupt state Liberal National Party government  fights a bike-friendly progressive council

 7. The politicians there are against biking and bikers

7 — The politicians there are against biking and bikers.

Speaker E. I have a feeling some cities have city bike systems because it is cool, I mean cool hip cities have to have city bike systems, right? I believe Las Vegas started something where you can share your own bike. I am just not sure if the beach cruisers they are using are the best city bikes. And that’s exactly what they are using all over Las Vegas.

…cool hip cities have to have city bike systems, right?

I am just not sure if the beach cruisers they are using are the best city bikes

 2. It’s basically OK but I’m not sure they use proper bikes

2 — It’s basically OK but I’m not sure they use proper bikes.

Speaker F. Even though I rarely use the service I have just renewed my Dublinbike subscription. The closest station is about a fifteen minute walk from my home, so expansion would be welcome. However, the expansion plans are being postponed by a lack of funding as sponsorship is not enough to cover the costs. Trams in the center of Dublin make cycling very unpleasant.

I rarely use the service

The closest station is about a fifteen minute walk from my home, so expansion would be welcome.

5. I don’t bike very often. I find the system useful

5 — I find the system useful though I don’t bike very often.

4 — Riding a bike is, first of all, a very healthy habit.

Steve: Great. Before I ring, we’d better just make sure they are within the price range.
Joan: Up to £15 a head?
Steve: I think you’ll find some people won’t be able to go that high.
Joan: Well, you can’t get anything decent under £10.
Steve: OK. We’ll say £12?
Joan: OK.
Steve: And we’d better make sure there’s good vegetarian food.

Joan: Yeah. We ought to go for something more expensive, ‘cause you…
Steve: … you get what you pay for.

3. Steve is not sure how to spell the name of the new Indian restaurant.

Presenter: Tonight we continue talking with Dr Strait. So far we’ve looked at various aspects of staff selection and I think by now you should all be beginning to see how much more there is to it than just putting the applicants through a short interview or asking the ‘right’ questions. So I think you should be ready for today’s talk on ‘matching the person to the job’.
Dr Strait: We’re going to talk today about the importance of choosing that all- round ‘right’ person.
Presenter: You mean we have to put ourselves into the role of the manager or supervisor?
Dr Strait: Yes. And then we are going to imagine how different applicants would fit into the team or group they have to work with. So, we’ll look at some examples later.
Presenter: It’s just theoretical at the moment…
Dr Strait: Yes. The point is you can select someone – even a friend – who has all the right qualifications… degrees… certificates, whatever.  You can also check that they have a lot of experience… that they’ve done the sort of tasks that you want them to do in your office already, in a similar environment. But if they start work and you realize that they just don’t get along with everybody else, that… say they’ve got sharply contrasting views on how something will work… well, with the best intentions you may be backing a loser.
Presenter: Wouldn’t it be just a question of company training though?
Dr Strait: Not always. Particularly in a team situation and I think it’s important to think in terms of that type of working environment. People have to have faith in each other’s ability to carry out the task their boss has set them. They have to trust that everyone will do their part of the job, and you can’t necessarily train people for this.
Presenter:  But it’s like trying to find out what someone’s personality is like in a job interview… I mean you can’t just do that. Even if you try, you won’t find out what they are really like until they actually start work.
Dr Strait: Well, in most interviews you usually ask candidates questions  about their hobbies and what they like doing in their spare time… that sort of thing… so employers are already involved in the practice of… well, doing part of the task.
Presenter: But it doesn’t tell you anything. It doesn’t tell you if they are easygoing or hate smokers or whatever.
Dr Strait: Well, arguably it does give you information about an applicant’s character, but also … more and more employers around the world are making use of what is called ‘a personality questionnaire’ to help them select new staff and…
Presenter: Sorry, what’s it called?
Dr Straight: A Personality Questionnaire. They have to be filled out by the candidates sometime during the selection procedure, often just before an interview. The idea is actually quite old. Apparently they were used by the ancient Chinese for picking out clerks and civil servants, and then later they were used by the military to put people in appropriate areas of work. They’ve gained a lot of ground since then and there are about 80,000 different tests available now and almost two thirds of the large employers use them.
Presenter: Which makes you think that there (fade out)

1) Which of the following is emphasised in the introduction?

1. Interviews
2. Staff selection
3. Question techniques

Which of the following is emphasised in the introduction? /

Во вступлении подчеркивается (is emphasised in the introduction)

2.Staff selection

В тексте говорится, что выбор персонала (2) важнее (see how much more there is to it), чем интервью (1) и правильные вопросы — «Question techniques» (3).

we’ve looked at various aspects of staff selection … you should  see how much more there is to it

2 — Staff selection

2) Dr Strait plans to discuss …

  1. the value of team work.

  3. how an applicant would fit in a team.

Dr Strait: Yes. And then we are going to imagine how different applicants would fit into the team or group they have to work with. So, we’ll look at some examples later
Dr Strait: Yes. The point is you can select someone – even a friend – who has all the right qualifications… degrees… certificates, whatever.  You can also check that they have a lot of experience… that they’ve done the sort of tasks that you want them to do in your office already, in a similar environment.

3) Dr Strait underlines the importance of an applicant’s…

  1. qualifications.
  2. experience.
  3. group work skills.

Dr Strait: Yes. 4) According to Dr Strait, an important part of teamwork is having trust in your…

  1. colleague’s ability.
  2. employer’s directions.
  3. company training.

According to Dr Strait, an important part of teamwork is having trust in your / Доктор Стрейт считает, что необходимая составляющая командной работы — доверие/вера в (ком?)

1. colleague’s ability

People have to have faith in each other’s ability to carry out the task their boss has set them. They have to trust that everyone will do their part of the job,

2.employer’s directions.

3.company training.

в тексте есть слова — the task their boss has set them, а также — you can’t necessarily train people for this.

1 — colleague’s ability

5) The presenter doubts the effectiveness of…

  1. company training.
  2. job interviews.
  3. question techniques.

Presenter: But it’s like trying to find out what someone’s personality is like in a job interview… I mean you can’t just do that. Even if you try, you won’t find out what they are really like until they actually start work.

3. question techniques

А следующие фразы: «you can’t necessarily train people for this», « in most interviews you usually ask candidates questions  about their hobbies and what they like doing in their spare time… that sort of thing…», которые можно посчитать за синонимичные выражения данных вопросов, звучат в аудиозаписи совсем в других контекстах и ВНИМАНИЕ!

1) Dr Strait: They have to trust that everyone will do their part of the job, and you can’t necessarily train people for this.

2) Dr Strait: Well, in most interviews you usually ask candidates questions  about their hobbies and what they like doing in their spare time… that sort of thing… so employers are already involved in the practice of… well, doing part of the task.

2 — job interviews.

6) Dr Strait claims that finding out personal information is…

  1. a skill that requires practice.
  2. avoided by most interviewers.
  3. already a part of job interviews.

Dr Strait: Well, in most interviews you usually ask candidates questions  about their hobbies and what they like doing in their spare time… that sort of thing… so employers are already involved in the practice of… well, doing part of the task.
Presenter: But it doesn’t tell you anything. It doesn’t tell you if they are easygoing or hate smokers or whatever
Dr Strait: Well, arguably it does give you information about an applicant’s character,

3. is already a part of job interviews.

in most interviews you usually ask candidates questions  about their hobbies and what they like doing in their spare time

Well, arguably it does give you information about an applicant’s character

1. a skill that requires practice.

2. avoided by most interviewers

3 — already a part of job interviews.

7) According to Dr Strait, Personality Questionnaires…

  1. have a very long history.
  2. were first used by the military.
  3. were invented by large employers.

According to Dr Strait, Personality Questionnaires /

1.have a very long history

The idea is actually quite old… they were used by the ancient Chinese

2. were first used by the military.

3. were invented by large employers

относительно использования опросников первыми в тексте четко звучит — they were used by the ancient Chinese for picking out clerks and civil servants, and then later they were used by the military to put people in appropriate areas of work

касательно изобретения опросников крупными работодателями аудиотекст также четко определяет: they were used by the ancient Chinese … and almost two thirds of the large employers use them.

1 — have a very long history.

Speaker A: We’ve had our dog, Fido, for two years now. My parents asked me which animal I’d like, and I said a dog. A dog was a good choice for us because we’ve got a big house and a fenced-in garden where he can play, and we all take turns walking him. Dogs need space and exercise. People who’ve got a small flat and not a lot of free time to spend with their pet should probably get a fish instead!

Speaker B: Our cats, Leo, Tabs and Boo, certainly keep us entertained round the house. They love to play and sleep and they certainly perk up at mealtimes. But they have their own characters. Leo is super friendly and loves to sit on your lap. Tabs always runs away when you try to pick her up. And Boo is unpredictable – sometimes he loves you, and sometimes he doesn’t! I guess they’re like people in a way – no two are alike!

Speaker С: I love having an aquarium. I’ve got two fish in it now. They don’t really have personalities, you know, although they get excited when I toss flakes of food in their tank. I started off with just one fish, then after six months, I decided it would be fun to get a second one, and they seem very happy together. They’re easy to look after – just give them some food and watch them swim!

Speaker D: We’ve got a really cool parrot named Polly. Polly’s a great character, and she talks! What better pet could you have, right? Sadly, though, Polly wasn’t feeling well a few weeks ago. She stopped eating and wasn’t talking so much. Everyone who owns a pet must look after it, so we had to take her to a vet, who prescribed some medicine. She’s much improved now and back to her usual chatty self!

Speaker E: Our local pet shop has got lots of different pets – rabbits and hamsters, birds and fish. I’m always tempted to buy another pet, but I know I mustn’t! But every time I go there, I pick up something for my dog, Gus. He loves having a new toy to chew on or chase round the house. I think about myself, you know. I love video games, but I can’t play the same one over and over again!

Speaker F: When we were thinking of getting a pet, we had to consider where we would get one. The pet shop near my house has lots to choose from. But I get so sad when I think about all those animals that are out on the streets. So my parents and I decided that we would visit the city shelter and rescue a pet from there. And that’s how we got our dog Chester, who’s more than happy to live with us!

Jason: Vicky, are you going to Helens fancy dress party on Saturday? You have to come, if only to see my outfit. I’m going as a gorilla rugby player!

Vicky: That’ll be hilarious, Jason! I wasn’t sure if I was going to come, but I think you’ve helped me make up my mind. But I don’t know what to wear. I was thinking maybe a princess, but that seems a bit boring.

Jason: No, that sounds great. If you came as a princess, you would wear loads of jewellery and a huge crown, right?

Vicky: Hmm, I’m not keen on that idea, really. Where would I get all those things? I don’t want to spend a thousand pounds on an outfit.

Jason: That’s a good point. Well, what about a celebrity? Maybe you could come as Lady Gaga. That should be easy to do, shouldn’t it? Just copy one of her looks.

Vicky: No, I can’t do that. Lisa’s already going as Gaga. Besides, I think I’m way too tall to be her. She’d only come up to my chin if she were standing in front of me!

Jason: What about a mermaid? You know, dress up like a fish! I think you’d look really good in that kind of outfit, and it can’t be that expensive, can it?

Vicky: That sounds interesting, but how would I get round the party without falling over? It would be quite difficult to walk!

Jason: Hmm, maybe you could wear a long green skirt and ask your mum to sew a fish tail on the bottom.

Vicky: How creative! I’ve also got a funky green blouse and I can put some fake seashells all over it. I think we’re getting somewhere with this idea! Of course, I’ve got an exam in three days, so I can’t spend all my time making a mermaid costume.

Jason: Hopefully it won’t take too long to make.
The party’s this weekend and today’s Monday. That’s plenty of time, don’t you think?

Vicky: Well, my exams in maths, which I’m terrible at. I think I’ll have to wait until it’s over before I can do this costume. But at least I’ve got the idea.

Jason: Well, good luck in your exam, and with the costume!

Vicky: Thanks. See you at the party Jason!

Presenter: Hi everyone and welcome to our programme, Awesome Job! Today we have John Stone with us to talk about his work in ecotourism. John, welcome to the show.

Speaker: Thanks for having me.

Presenter: Tell us some things about your job and what your company does.

Speaker: I work as a tour guide for a company called Go Green Tourism. We specialise in tours to unique habitats with rich biodiversity. We organise very small tours, for maybe 20 people or less, so that the environment remains protected, and our destinations are mainly tropical regions in South America and most recently South-East Asia. We travel to our destination and stay at a local village near the habitat, which is where we eat and sleep. Then we go on a guided walking tour of a rainforest and we educate our travelling companions about the different flora and fauna of the area.

Presenter: So you have to be well-trained in plant and animal sciences to give one of these tours, yes?

Speaker: That’s right. Typically the tour guides have a degree in biology or botany, or a master’s in forest conservation, something like that. My specific educational background is in zoo management, but I saw an advert for this job and decided I wanted to give it a try. I’ve learned a great deal more about the natural environment through this work, which I’m happy about.

Presenter: Is ecotourism safe for the environment, in your opinion?

Speaker: We do our very best to ensure that any place we visit is left virtually untouched. Our ecotravellers must attend a seminar before we embark on our journey in order to learn the dos and don’ts of the trip. People who sign up for these tours are quite conscious of the environment to begin with.

Presenter: Does your company participate in environment protection programmes?

Speaker: I’m glad you asked that, because yes, we do. Part of our profits go to awareness programmes aimed at educating people about the rainforests and their value as a resource. Most people don’t realise that without rainforests, we wouldn’t be able to survive.

Presenter: There is also the problem of rainforests being cut down, isn’t there?

Speaker: Yes, we also provide funds for organisations that fight illegal logging and land clearing in Brazil. These organisations work with the Brazilian government and although it’s a continuous battle, they have made progress in recent years in protecting land.

Presenter: That’s good to know. What sorts of things do people get to see in the rainforests, besides plants and animals of course?

Speaker: Oh, many things. We visit dazzling waterfalls, and pristine lakes and rivers. We also visit the native peoples who live in or near the rainforests – the ones who are welcoming to visitors anyway! So there is also a cultural exchange that takes place between the ecotravellers and the locals. I’ve even picked up a few words of the locals’ languages, which is really cool. Of course, I’m a long way off being fluent!

Presenter: And do you just visit rainforests?

Speaker: Well, the company is only about eight years old, so the focus has been rainforest regions mainly in Brazil, but as I said before, we do visit South-East Asia, which we started doing a couple of years ago. But I’m excited to say that we are planning to expand our operations to regions in Africa, such as the Serengeti and Madagascar. Business has been booming for ecotourism, so hopefully that trend will continue, for us and for other environmentally-conscious organisations…
