I am a Marine so my day begins at about 05.00. I get up, do health, and avoid to work for some physical training (PT). This generally includes running any number of miles. After PT I drive back house to shower and grab some breakfast. My work day normally starts at 07.45. I take accountability of my soldiers and designate the tasks for the day. I will generally have some conferences to participate in throughout the day. I will usually bring my lunch to work so I can eat it as I type a report or take care of any variety of tasks I was not able to finish earlier due to some unforeseen occasion.

After lunch I take accountability of my Marines and provide even more charging. At 16.30 I call my Marines into a development and pass any information they might need, then I send them house. I leave work around 17.30 or 18.00. When I get house my other half has dinner prepared for me.
I then spend 2 hours on class work. I will then go invest a couple of minutes talking with my kids and playing a couple of games. I will then turn on the TELEVISION and enjoy a recording of a show. I then go to bed at 23.00. On the weekends I run my own organisation. I offer self-defense items at the regional flea shopping mall.
I wish to open a complete time shop within the next year. I would ultimately like to own a chain of stores concentrating on self-defense and tactical equipment.
Morals appear to be extremely loose these days. The time I am residing in is everything about getting ahead or getting what you want by any ways essential. People only appreciate doing the right thing if it benefits them. There are a couple of exceptions to this, but they are scarce. There are 2 major things that add to the fall of morals in this time. The first one would be media.
There is so much violence, foul language, and sex in movies, TV shows, computer game, and music. The second significant aspect would be the war that has been raving on for the past 11 years. I view joy as a lifestyle. It is all about having individuals around you that you enjoy and that love you. Friends and household are the keys to happiness. I have an other half and 2 wonderful children. They make me pleased every day. No matter how my day has actually gone, I know that when I get home I will have my other half and kids there waiting to invest time with me and inform me everything about their days.
I also think pets are a part of the family. No matter how bad of a day you are having or how mad you are, as soon as your dog climes in your lap and gives you a kiss it just all melts away. The literary work I would put into the time capsule is a poem. The poem was written by Billy Collins, and is titled The Lanyard. It is a beautiful poem about a boy who gives his mother a lanyard that he made to repay her for all that she has done for him over the years. Everyone needs to remember what their mother has done for them.
This poem is a good reminder to call them more even to just say I love you. I think a picture of the World Trade Center would be a great piece of art and architecture to put into the time capsule. It is important to remember the significant events from history that has shaped the way America is now. It is important to remember all of the Americans that were lost on September 11, 2001. The act of terrorism that took place that day started a chain reaction that has kept our country in war for over 10 years so far. There is no telling how it has changed life for generations to come.
A significant song would be Moment like This by Kelly Clarkson. I did not pick this song because it was an amazing song. I picked it because of what it represents. Kelly Clarkson was the winner of the very first American Idol. The song represents the start of a new wave in entertainment in America and around the world. That song ushered in a new era in TV entertainment. Prime time is now filled with singing contests and talent shows. The movie I would put into the time capsule would be the box set of The Lord of the Ring.
I chose these movies for a few reasons. The first is I really like the movies and think they will be enjoyed no matter what time you live. The second reason is because it is the highest grossing trilogy of all time. The last reason is because this move is a great example of good wining over evil. The gadget I would put in the time capsule is an iPhone. The iPhone is the phone that started the craze for app enabled phones. The android phone did not come out for a while after the iPhone. Microsoft even came out with their own version of phone.
I try to engage the class during the first day of school by doing the time capsule activity, or in this case a time “box” since boxes are easier to find than plastic capsules which are available only in the market (and will cost you $$$).
Introduction
First, I make sure that students understand what a time capsule means by showing some videos on YouTube about a group of people who go back to their high school campus to dig up something from the past such as one from Wellesley High School, or in my more mature classes I show a clip from a Korean romantic movie My Sassy Girl just to add variety and something to discuss on.
For some giggles, I read them a part of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, where Greg Heffley had the idea to make a time capsule. He thought whoever found it would travel back in time and reward him making him rich. Of course that didn’t happen and he ended up digging it back up to get some of the stuff he and his friend had buried.
After that, I tell them that they are going to make their own time capsule which of course will not be buried for 10 or 20 years but something that they will open up again in 10 months or less. And in this activity, we don’t do any burying at all. It is something for display!
The Task
So what do we put inside the capsule? This is the part where I say it depends on the teacher and the students.
I teach ESL to Vietnamese middle school students so I try to make it as simple as possible – one that they can easily understand and do (I do this activity at the beginning of the year so there still might be some language gaps). I let them answer a set of questions such as their favorite stuff (movies, songs etc) and some questions about their interests and plans in the future. Just to add some fun and accuracy, I bring my students to the nurse’s station to measure their height and weight! This is a good way to “foreshadow” to the students that they will not just be sitting idly in my class!
You can use this Time Capsule Handout for lower grade level. For my higher level classes, I try to incorporate social media-style templates such as Instagram and Facebook where they can draw and add photos and other details.
After which they put their answers inside the time capsule and we seal it using a tape. Lastly, I challenge my students to decorate the boxes, and bring them back to class for display.
By the end of school year, students will answer the same set of questions and compare them with the one inside the time capsule. It is amazing how things change in less than a year specially with their height, weight or even penmanship. It is always a delight for me to see their varied reactions.
Variations
You can use pringles can and include first day photo, sample of their best handwriting and have them trace their hand and foot.
