The eBay Addicts

Katie is sitting at her computer, eyes glued to the screen. It’s 2 am and the eBay auction is about to end. Within minutes the 25-year-old events manager from London will know if she has won another pair of Gucci shoes to add to her collection.
The scene may sound familiar. Indeed, eBay — the Internet auction site — has become a modern phenomenon, with 10 million British users, 135 million worldwide and up to 600,000 joining every month.
The other side-effects of her self-confessed addiction are far more alarming. Katie has spent so much of her substantial J50,000-a-year salary on eBay since discovering it in November that she is already J10,000 in debt.
It is not just her finances which are feeling the strain. Her health is also deteriorating under the stress of owing so much, and she has been to see her GP. What horrifies Katie even more is the fact that she can see her personality changing as a result of her addiction: she admits she is now prepared to lie to cover the extent of her problem.
Natalie, 27, from London, who works for a casting agency, also finds taking part in the eBay auctions and hunting for bargains addictive.
‘I admit that I am an addict and I probably do need professional help,’ she says. ‘Every day I wake up and say that today I am not going on eBay. But I can’t stop myself. It started as my stress-buster from work and now it’s the cause of my stress. The thrill of the auction is like a gambling rush.’
These young women are not isolated cases. David Nott, Addictions Programme Manager, is seeing an increasing number of patients with eBay addiction, which he says is a very real condition.
While shopaholism has been recognized as a problem for years, he believes eBay addiction is different because of the combination of shopping and gambling which makes it so compelling and potentially more addictive.
‘While a lot of people claim that the possibility of picking up a bargain is what attracts them to eBay, the single biggest thing that tends to keep them coming back is not what they buy, but how they buy it,’ he says. ‘The whole thing is geared around anticipation, winning and losing — it’s a very emotive process.’
He says eBay addiction should be treated as seriously as any other.
‘It is potentially life-destroying. While it doesn’t have the immediate health implications, it can lead to disrupted sleep, the same types of adrenaline highs and lows and obviously the overspending and consequent financial problems that this entails.’

A. Little is known for certain about how guinea pigs were first introduced to Europe and North America as a domestic pet, but they most probably came during the 16th century. Holland, Portugal and Spain had colonies in South America, and the explorers brought to Europe gold and precious gems, along with other unusual and exciting finds. Colourful parrots became very popular status symbols in the homes of the wealthy, and with them came the guinea pig and other animals previously unknown in Europe.

Almost half of the world’s population currently lives in cities, and by 2050 that is predicted to increase to 75%, but what kind of city will they be living in? Today, most city dwellers are dissatisfied because they have to live in overcrowded and polluted surroundings. Traffic jams are getting worse, queues longer, power cuts more common, bad air quality more threatening to human health.
There are various ideas about how a future city should look. Some of these revolve around the idea that better means greener. Experts predict carbon-neutral cities full of electric vehicles and bike-sharing schemes, with air quality so much improved that office workers can actually open their windows for the first time. Visions of a green city often include skyscrapers where living and office space comprises high-rise green-houses and vegetables growing on the roofs. Behind such greenification of cities lies a very pressing need.

Keeping busy

The public school in town served a number of purposes. Education, of course, was one. It offered a curriculum in general education, manual education, and preparatory education for college. Its music and sports programs provided entertainment to the school and its patrons. And the school served as an agency of social cohesion, bringing the community together in a common effort in which everyone took pride.

The sports program was the center of gravity of extra-curricular activities. The school fielded junior and senior varsity teams in football, basketball and track. Any young man with enough coordination to walk and chew gum at the same time could find a place on one of those teams. In addition, sports generated a need for pep rallies, cheerleaders, a band, homecoming activities, parades and floats, a homecoming queen and maids of honor, and a sports banquet. It also mobilized parents to support the activities with time and money.

There were any number of clubs a student might join. Some were related to academics, like the Latin Club, the Spanish Club, and the Science Club. Others brought together students interested in a profession, like the Future Farmers of America, the Future Homemakers of America, the Future Teachers of America, and the Pre-Med Club. Still others were focused on service. The Intra-Mural Council, made up of girls (who had been neglected in the regular sports program), organized tournaments in a variety of sports for girls. The Library Club worked to improve library holdings and equipment. The Pep Club organized homecoming activities, parades and athletic banquets.

The Student Council, including representatives from each class, was elected by the student body after a heated political campaign with banners and speeches. It represented student interests to the administration and the school board. It approved student clubs that were formed, helped resolve discipline problems, and played a role in setting codes of conduct and dress. For the most part, it was a docile body that approved the policies of the administration.

The Journalism Club published a monthly newspaper of school news and opinion. It was financed by selling ads to business men in the community.

Another group planned and published the school Yearbook, which was a pictorial record of the student body, the year’s activities, sports, and achievements. The Yearbook staff sponsored a beauty contest, pictured outstanding students selected by the faculty, and a Who’s Who of popular and talented students selected by the student body.

Churches in town, of which there were many, sponsored their own activities for youth; and the community sponsored a recreation center, called Teen Town, for chaperoned Saturday night dances each week. Community and school leaders seemed determined to keep the youth of the town busy and out of trouble. In a small Southern town in the Bible Belt where very few students had access to a car, which had been voted dry and in which no alcohol was sold, they succeeded marvelously well.

Задание 1

Прочитайте приведенные ниже тексты. Преобразуйте слова, напечатанные заглавными буквами в конце строк, обозначенных номерами 19–25, так, чтобы они грамматически соответствовали содержанию текста. Заполните пропуски полученными словами. Каждый пропуск соответствует отдельному заданию 19–25.

Методическая подсказка

Это задание проверяет знание грамматики английского языка. Обратим внимание на те части речи, которые необходимо трансформировать. Важно, что при изменении формы слова часть речи не изменяется! Справа от текста могут быть даны любые из шести частей речи. Это имя существительное, наречие, количественное числительное, личное местоимение и глагол. При выполнении этого задания необходимо учитывать, какие грамматические формы имеют данные части речи. Имя существительное единственного числа принимает форму множественного числа (здесь необходимо, помимо общего правила образования множественного числа существительных, вспомнить все исключения и особенности правописания форм множественного числа существительных). Количественное числительное становится порядковым числительным (обратите внимание на сложные случаи образования и написания некоторых числительных). Имя прилагательное и наречие имеют сравнительную или превосходную степени (здесь также есть некоторые случаи, которые надо помнить). Личное местоимение может превратиться в притяжательное (краткая или полная формы), объектное или возвратное. Что касается глагола, помните, что он может стоять в личной и неличной форме (например, в виде Present Participle или Past Participle). Если глагол должен быть употреблен в личной форме, то надо определить, в каком залоге должен стоять глагол (действительном или страдательном) и в каком грамматическом времени. Для правильного определения грамматического времени, надо, во-первых, определить в каком бытийном (жизненном) времени представлено предложение или ситуация. Для этого мы, смотря на глаголы вокруг пропуска и другие указатели времени, определяем, относится ли повествование к настоящему, прошедшему или будущему. Определив время, мы должны определить временную форму. Для этого мы ищем в предложении слова-подсказки или индикаторы грамматических времен (например, every day, usually — индикаторы Present Simple, since, for, yet — индикаторы Present Perfect. Также часто помогает линия времени, которая наглядно показывает, какая существует последовательность между действиями и событиями.

Кроме того, глагол может являться частью условного предложения (есть четыре, начиная с нулевого, типа условных предложений, в каждом из которых глаголы стоят в определенных формах) или предложения, начинающегося с I wish или If only.

Не забудьте также обратить внимание на те слова, которые стоят непосредственно перед пропуском — не забывайте, что есть ряд глаголов, прилагательных, фраз и конструкций, после которых необходимо употребление инфинитива с частичкой или без частички to или герундия (например, fancy going, want to go, make symbol do smith, There’s’ no point in doing smith…).

Читаем  представленные тексты (это может быть и один текст), чтобы иметь общее представление, о чем идет речь. Дальше заполняем пропуски.

Номер 19. Написано количественное числительное one, следовательно, единственной возможной формой является порядковое числительное first. Номер 20. Представлен глагол. Проводим блиц-анализ: пассив или актив? — актив. Это личная форма, так как у подлежащего Greece нет сказуемого, значит нужна полная форма глагола. Это не условное предложение, так как отсутствуют соответствующие слова if, unless и другие. Определяем бытийное время — прошедшее (Past), так как есть слова 1900 years before, had been. Теперь определяем грамматическое время (tense) — смотрим на время в предыдущем предложении — was not, в предложении с пропуском есть фраза 1900 years before-рисуем линию времени, выставляем точку was not в прошлом, определяем, где — слева или справа будет находиться точка 1900 years before. Она находится справа. Действия идут одно за другим в прошлом, значит глагол будет стоять во времени Past Perfect, показывая, что действие уже произошло и завершилось до глагола was not. Следующее предложение подтверждает правильность нашего выбора — had been at its height тоже до глагола was not. Следовательно, глагол have ставим в форму (Past Perfect — had had).
Номер 21. Здесь стоит прилагательное early (это именно прилагательное, так как  оно является определением к словам Greek and Roman periods), и данное прилагательное надо поставить в сравнительную степень, поскольку период сравнивается только с греческим и римским периодами, а не со всеми периодами истории.
Номер 22. Написано существительное wife в единственном числе. Единственная возможная трансформация — форма множественного числа wives (существительное, заканчивающееся на —f, —fe во множественном числе меняет f на ves).
Номер 23. Дано личное местоимение he. Данное местоимение не является в тексте подлежащим, а является дополнением, соответственно, необходимо использовать объектное местоимение him.
Номер 24. Дан глагол. Используем знакомый алгоритм выполнения задания): актив или пассив? — Актив, ведь подлежащее огонь (fire) может разрушить здание. Это не условное наклонение. У подлежащего нет сказуемого, значит — это глагол в личной форме. Бытийное время прошедшее, здесь указан год — 1992. И этот год также говорит о том, что это Past Simple (действие, совершаемое в определенный момент времени в прошлом). Правильная форма destroyed.
Номер 25. Дан глагол repair. Актив или пассив? — Пассив, замок никого починить не может, отремонтировать можно его. Не условное наклонение, личная форма, потому что оно является сказуемым. В предыдущем и последующем предложениях глаголы стоят в прошедшем времени, однако в самом предложении с пропуском есть since then, что является указателем перфектных времен. Чтобы решить, что использовать —Present Perfect или Past Perfect — мы рисуем линию времени. Ставим точку в прошлом destroyed. Глагол repair в правильной форме будет стоять справа или слева от глагола destroyed? — Справа. Значит мы ставим глагол в Present Perfect — has been repaired.

Таким образом ответы на задания с 19 по 25 выглядят так: 19 — first, 20 — had had, 21 — earlier, 22 — wives, 23 — him, 24 — destroyed, 25 — has been repaired.

Задание 2. Прочитайте приведенный ниже текст. Образуйте от слов, напечатанных заглавными буквами в конце строк, обозначенных номерами 26–31, однокоренные слова, так, чтобы они грамматически и лексически соответствовали содержанию текста. Методическая подсказка

В этой части проверяются навыки словообразования. Задание в спецификации формулируется «задания на заполнение пропуска в связном тексте путем образования родственного слова от предложенного опорного слова» при помощи суффиксов и приставок. Залогом успеха при выполнении этого задания являются два фактора-правильное определение части речи, которую необходимо вставить вместо пропуска, и знание словообразующих суффиксов и приставок. Читаем текст, обращая внимание на слова перед пропусками и следующие за ним. Определяем пропущенную часть речи, а также, имеет ли пропущенное слова отрицательную или утвердительную коннотацию.

Номер 29. There was, however, one big…… После конструкции There was должно стоять существительное, что подтверждается наличием перед пропуском числительного и имени прилагательного, определяющих ту же часть речи. Следовательно, пропущенное слово существительное единственного числа (индикатор числа слово one).
Номер 30. The outback was ………….any place the early settlers had ever seen. После was может стоять или причастие или прилагательное или существительное. Так как существительное уже есть (place), следовательно, пропущенная часть речи -прилагательное.
Номер 31. Then gold was………there in 1852. Аналогичная ситуация номеру 30. Исходя из смысла всего предложения, предполагаем, что скорее всего это будет past participle, определяющее, что произошло с золотом в 1852 году.

Отметив на полях КИМа, рядом с каждым пропуском определенные нами части речи, мы открываем сами слова справа.

Номер 26 — наречие, значит нужно подставить суффикс -ly, получаем слово willingly. Перечитываем абзац со вставленным словом — смысл сохранен.
Номер 27 — слово prison предполагает, что нам нужно существительное, уточняющее, кем были первые поселенцы. Последующее предложение подтверждает это. Образуем существительное prisoners во множественном числе.
Номер 28 — образуем от слова punish собирательное существительное punishment, которое завершает предложение, делая его логическим дополнением идеи, высказанной в двух предыдущих предложениях.
Номер 29 — образуем от слова differ существительное difference. Перечитываем абзац, образованное  существительное идеально вписывается в него, так как в абзаце идет речь о разнице в освоении запада в Соединенных Штатах и Австралии.
Номер 30 — нам предлагают заменить слово like, которое само по себе уже является прилагательным. Следовательно, часть речи уже определена сама собой, мы должны только, сохранив эту часть речи, добавить отрицательную приставку с тем, чтобы образовать новое, подходящее по смыслу, слово — unlike.
Номер 31 — нам дано слово covered, которое уже является причастием. Следовательно, как и в предыдущем случае, нам нужна отрицательная приставка. A. Acid rain moves easily, affecting locations far beyond those that let out the pollution. As a result, this global pollution issue causes great debates between countries that fight over polluting each other’s environments. By trapping heat, the greenhouse effect is warming the planet and threatening the environment. Current fears stem largely from the fact that global warming is occurring at such a rapid pace. Models are predicting that over the next century the global temperature will rise by several degrees.

D. Individuals often throw out goods without realizing that they could be dangerous for the environment. No matter where people put these materials, there is always a chance that they could find their way into the ground and eventually into our bodies. Special research is necessary to provide data on the effects of every chemical as well as to learn how combinations of these chemicals affect human health.

E. Only a few factors combine to create the problem of ozone layer depletion. The production and emission of CFCs, chlorofluorocarbons, is by far the leading cause. Many countries have called for the end of CFC production. However, those industries that do use CFCs do not want to discontinue usage of this highly valuable industrial chemical. So it’s important to make people realize the disaster CFCs cause in the stratosphere.

F. Unlike some environmental issues, rainforest depletion has fortunately received significant public and media attention. According to some estimates, 50 million acres of rain forest are cut down every year. Every year, Brazil chops down an area of forest the size of the state of Nebraska. In Indonesia, Zaire, Papua-New Guinea, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela, rain forests that were once great have been lost.

G. The world’s population has been booming for years. The population is now threatening to reach the stage where there are simply too many people for the planet to support. Greater populations pollute and consume more, ruining the environment and creating or intensifying a variety of problems. Also, with the food supply limited, the increase in population will make shortages in many parts of the world even worse.

After graduating from medical school, Eugene Alford built a lucrative career as an ear, nose, and throat specialist and a facial plastic surgeon at Methodist Hospital. In the summers, he and his wife Mary, a dentist and former paediatric nurse, would join a church-sponsored medical mission to Honduras, where he operated on the needy in a rural clinic.

At home, Alford treated many prominent Houston residents, but he also waived his fee for less fortunate patients. Carolyn Thomas, for instance, went to see him with a large gauze bandage over a cavity in her face. She had been shot by her boyfriend, who had also killed her mother. The bullet had blown away Thomas’s nose, upper jaw, and right eye. Reconstruction would have cost a million dollars, but Alford, his medical team, and his hospital did it for free.

Whenever Alford needed to relax after a particularly gruelling period of work, he’d drive to his ranch in Bellville and lose himself in farm chores. He didn’t make it out there as often as he would have liked. As a plastic surgeon at Methodist Hospital, he had performed 800 operations over the previous year and was booked solid for months ahead.

So on a chilly Sunday a few days after Christmas, Alford headed out through the pine bush, intending to clear a trail for deer hunting. As he cut through underbrush in the south pasture, Alford brought the tractor to a halt in front of a dead white oak standing in his path. He nudged the trunk with the tractor’s front-end loader, expecting the tree to topple neatly to the ground. Instead the top half of the oak swayed towards him. In seconds, more than a ton of hardwood slammed down on him, crushing his spine.

Pinned to the steering wheel, Alford could barely breathe. He tried to hit the brakes, but his legs failed to respond. When he found he could move his hands, he turned off the ignition, then with great effort pulled his cell phone from his shirt pocket and called his wife on speed dial. ‘Mary,’ he gasped, ‘a tree fell on me. I’m going to die.’ ‘Don’t quit!’ she shouted. ‘We’re coming to get you!’ Alford was still conscious when his neighbours Kevin and Snuffy, alerted by Mary, hauled the tree off him. A rescue helicopter touched down minutes later, and Alford advised the paramedics on which drugs to administer to him. Then he blacked out.

He was flown to the trauma unit at Medical Centre in Houston, then quickly transferred to Methodist. The operation was successful, but the patient was still in danger. After almost two weeks in the ICU, Alford awoke, and his condition improved enough for him to be taken to a rehabilitation unit, where he began physical therapy and learned to use a wheelchair. In February 2008, six weeks after the accident, Alford returned to his 100-year-old home in Houston. At first, he was so weak that he could sit up only when strapped into a wheelchair.

Before the accident, Alford had been a solidly built six-footer and was used to being in charge. Now, entirely dependent on others, he fell into despair. ‘If it weren’t for my wife and kids, I would have killed myself,’ he says. But then the love started pouring in. Alford’s brother maintained a blog to provide updates about Alford’s recovery. Over the next three months, he received 40,000 messages from colleagues, former patients, acquaintances, even strangers. The outpouring raised his spirits. It also gave Mary a new perspective on him. For years, Alford’s schedule of 15-hour days hadn’t left him much time for her and the kids. ‘I’d just about decided you liked work more than us,’ Mary told him one day over lunch. ‘But now I realize you didn’t want to leave the hospital because there were so many folks that needed you. You couldn’t just abandon them.’

The couple refurbished their house with ramps, a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, and an elevator. They bought an extended-cab pickup truck and fitted it with a wheelchair hoist, a swivelling driver’s seat, and hand controls so Alford could drive himself.

But Alford’s goal was to make such adjustments temporary. After a month of physical therapy, he graduated from an electric to a manual wheelchair. The daily workouts built strength in his back and abdominal muscles, improving his ability to hold himself upright. Soon he was able to stand with the aid of a tubular steel frame; seated in his chair, he could now draw his legs toward his chest.

In May, Alford began the next phase of treatment. By putting a paralyzed patient through his paces, therapists hoped to grow new neuromuscular connections. After three months of this routine, Alford’s coordination had improved markedly. He felt ready to pick up a scalpel again, with the hospital’s approval. Alford still goes for four hours of rehab every morning and spends his evenings stretching and riding a motorized stationary bike to keep muscle spasms at bay. But in the hours between, he sees patients or performs surgeries — as many as five a week.

He’s eager to do more complex surgeries and plans to increase his workload. Walking remains uncertain. ‘I always tell him if I had a crystal ball, I’d be a millionaire,’ says Marcie Kern, one of his physical therapists. Still, the doctor considers himself a lucky man.

Machu Picchu

In a way, it’s wonderful that Machu Picchu can nowadays be visited on a day 32____ from Cuzco. Everyone probably should have a chance to see this remarkable place.

Like many travellers, I hoped to get a taste of Machu Picchu’s ‘lost in the clouds’ atmosphere by approaching the ruins on foot 33____ the Inca trail. Busy Day

Let me tell you what happened once when my dear Uncle Podger decided to hang a picture on the wall. He told us not to 32 ______ and just watch him do it. He said he would do it by himself. But the biggest gyms also have swimming pools, steam rooms and cafeterias. They offer classes in yoga, dance, aerobics and many other forms of exercise. 6Here is one thing that we can all do to help species that are close to extinction. When travelling overseas, be very careful not to buy any souvenirs that have been made from species nearing extinction. This means avoiding purchasing items made from ivory, coral and fur and also ‘medicinal’ products as they often contain rhino, tiger and bear parts.

7Wildlife parks and zoos are very educational places but perhaps their greatest purpose is the conservation of endangered species. Animal centres all around the world work together in order to breed rare and endangered species. For example, today there are only a few hundred giant pandas left in the wild. If breeding programmes and conservation efforts are successful, future generations may still be able to see these beautiful animals in the flesh, not just in books.

The rooms were perfect. The décor was slightly shabby but, as if to make up for it, the balcony had a stunning view over the town. We decided to stay for a month initially, and depending on what happened, we would come to an arrangement after that. It was a relief to be settled somewhere, if only for a few weeks. I could now pack my suitcase in record time and we’d met so many people that I’d lost count. Sometimes when I was introduced to yet another stranger I would change my name, just to make it more interesting.
