Установите соответствие между заголовками 1-8 и текстами A-G. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

1

Be tactful

5

Be reliable

2

Don’t spend long on simple tasks

6

Use your initiative and common sense

3

Have confidence – know your business

7

Be helpful

4

Be aware of health and safety rules at work

8

Respect confidentiality

A.

At the start, everything will be new and you will probably be nervous about answering the telephone and dealing with customers. You will become more assured as you develop knowledge and experience – set about gaining that knowledge about your company as soon as possible.

B.

Good timekeeping and regular attendance are vital qualities for every office worker. If there is no one available to answer the telephone or type up invoices, the system will soon grind to a halt. If you are genuinely ill, phone your employer as early as possible so they can arrange for someone to cover for you. If you think you are going to be off sick for more than one day, let them know.

C.

Assess a situation and try to assist in any way you can. First impressions of a company are often gained from someone answering the telephone or sitting at a reception desk. If that person is you, then your company’s reputation can hinge on how you deal with customers.

D.

Even if you know a customer is wrong, never be rude in return. If necessary, refer them to a senior staff member or to your employer to deal with.

E.

You should be able to work on your own and find solutions for simple problems which happen throughout the day. If you have finished your current task, don’t sit and gaze around an untidy office. The time you have spare could be used in clearing up or sorting through old files. Management decisions should still be passed through your employer. If a salesman has arrived with brochures for new office equipment, it is not up to you to order yourself a new office chair – this is a decision you leave to your employer.

F.

It is important not to gossip about your employer or the people you work with. If someone shares a confidence with you, don’t spread it around the fest of the office. People will soon learn whether they can trust you or not.

G

Be aware of potential dangers and follow safe practices strictly. Avoid having trailing leads from typewriters or kettles, which people could trip over. Check fire exits are not blocked by box or filling cabinets.

B3

Прочитайте текст и заполните пропуски A-F частями предложений, обозначенными цифрами 1-7. Одна из частей в списке 1-7 лишняя. Занесите цифры, обозначающие соответствующие части предложений, в таблицу.

Health Advice for Travellers

Doctors tend to be poor educators; we have depressingly little to show for our efforts to educate the general public on even such a clear-cut issue as the effects of cigarette smoking on health.  How much more difficult, then is it for doctors to provide large numbers of departing travellers with detailed information and effective advice for their trip when the usual forum for doing so is a single, hurried consultation, just before departure. There are limits to what can be achieved in or should be expected from a medical consultation A_____, even when the doctor is well- informed about the subject, and the traveller is receptive, has a perfect memory, and is good at doing what he or she is told.

What kind of advice should travelers receive? A list of rules and instructions B______ carries the implication that travellers are incapable of understanding the principles involved, are not interested, or do not ‘need’ to know. C______ advice offered on such condescending terms is seldom followed for long. The best advice is not a list of dos and don’ts, but a clear, rational explanation from which a conclusion is obvious.

D_____, we have studiously avoided giving advice to consult a doctor without stating the reason for doing so. ‘Consult your doctor’ is a useful formula to enable advice-givers to avoid difficult issues, but is a particularly unhelpful one when it relates to a problem which may arise abroad. E_____to find a doctor in a remote place. Some 85% of the world’s population have never seen a doctor, and never will. Advice for travellers must take account of the fact that travellers to many parts of the world will be F______.

  1. It is hardly surprising that
  2. But despite this
  3. Throughout this book
  4. In the same position
  5. Given without explanation or justifications
  6. It is not easy
  7. Under the best of circumstances

A walk in the midday sun

Hot weather makes your heart pump harder, and if you’re not very fit, you start to understand why the majority of mountain rescue statistics are made up from summer walkers suffering heart attacks. Heat exhaustion is quite easy to get when you’re making a great physical effort. It happens where your body can’t produce enough sweat to keep you cool.

The answer is to keep up your water intake. It’s a good idea to drink a pint of water for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit every 24 hours. So, if the temperature is in the 70s, and you are doing a five-hour walk, you’ll need a minimum of around one and a half pints of water. It’s vital that you don’t wait until you develop a raging thirst before you stop for a drink – keep taking regular swigs from your water bottle.

Many walkers flavour their water with fruit juice, which makes it a lot more palatable. You could even use one of the isotonic drinks made for athletes, which replace the body’s salts lost through sweating. Powders such a Dioralyte, which you may have in the house as a treatment for diarrhoea, will do the job just as well, as its main aim is also effective rehydration.

Given that evaporation is your body’s cooling mechanism, you can help things along with an external application of water. Soaking your hat with water is a great way to cool the head, through if the sun is beating down, it will probably dry off almost immediately. Better still then if you can plunge into a river or the sea fully-clothed. And if that’s not possible, then at least take off your boots and socks and paddle in a cool stream.

Walking in the heat increases the rate at which your feet swell, which can lead to them feeling tight in your boots. Cool water from a stream reduces any swelling and helps general foot comfort. At the same time, you can check out your feet for signs of blisters. Extra sweating makes the skin softer and increases the chance of blisters forming, in the same way as when water leaks into your boots and gets to your feet.

As for what clothing you wear, this should be lightweight and reasonably loose-fitting. Tight clothing will feel uncomfortable and may even lead to the formation of an irritating rash known as ‘prickly heat’ on your skin. The answer, if this does develop, is to try and stay cool as much as possible. Do this by either keeping in the shade, or washing the affected area with cold water, but without soap. But prevention is by far the best approach, so keep your clothing light.

It’s understandable to want to remove any extraneous clothing when it’s extremely hot, but it doesn’t really make much sense to take off T-shirts. The sun’s rays can be quite strong, and shoulders are always very sensitive to sunburn. This is the worst place to be red and sore when you are wearing a heavy rucksack on your back. Wearing shorts can also create problems for walkers, as the backs of the legs can catch the sun very easily.

In fact, those days when an apparently harmless breeze is blowing can be the most deceptive. It might not feel so hot, so you probably won’t notice the damage being done so soon. As on every other day then, a good strong sun cream should therefore be applied to any skin which is exposed. Make the most of the summer, but treat the sun with the respect it deserves.

A15

The writer says that hot weather

  1. is the main cause of heart attacks.
  2. requires walkers to have frequent drinks.
  3. is the worst type of weather for mountain walking.
  4. ensures that mountain walkers stay fit.

A16

What does the writer say about ‘Dioralyte’?

  1. It helps to reduce sweating.
  2. It prevents the loss of body salts.
  3. It will prevent you getting diarrhoea.
  4. It works in the same way as an isotonic drink.

A17

it’ in the paragraph 4 refers to

  1. the sun.
  2. your hat.
  3. the head.
  4. water

A18

According to the text, when might your feel suffer?

  1. when they cool down
  2. if you are wearing tightly-fitting boots
  3. when they are wet
  4. if you have to walk through water

A19

According to the writer, it is better to wear loose-fitting clothing because

  1. it keeps you cool.
  2. it is very light.
  3. it is less likely to create problems for your skin.
  4. it lasts longer than tight-fitting.

A20

What does the writer mean by ‘extraneous’ clothing in paragraph 7?

  1. clothing which is no longer needed to keep you warm
  2. clothing which most people would consider unusual in hot weather
  3. clothing which is too tight
  4. clothing which is too heavy to wear

A21

According to the writer, when are walkers particularly at risk from the effects of the sun?

  1. when they are unaware of the heat
  2. if their sun cream is not strong enough
  3. when there is a strong wind
  4. if they have suffered an injury

Guidebooks
on Scotland.

A.      A
highly informative reading, this book is a must for those wishing to explore
the Western Isles. It is packed with essential information such as ferry
timetables and descriptions of B&Bs, and also includes useful tips on how
to fit in with the local way of life and dress suitably for the Scottish
weather. Particularly interesting is the section on ‘music festivals of the
north’, as well as the English – Gaelic phrasebook for those who fancy trying
their hand at the local language.

B.      Not
only does this guide take you on a tour of all the main sites of historical
significance, it also explores Scotland’s Celtic  heritage in depth and
includes well thought out suggested travel itineraries. Whether you simply wish
to read about Scotland from the comfort of your armchair or are planning an
actual tour of the country, this guide is well-worth to refd.

C.      Helpfully
divided into different sections for each region of the country, this guide book
focuses on action and adventure and is full of ideas about how to get the most
out of your stay in Scotland, such as where to go, what you can do there and
where to get any equipment you might need. Written in a humorous tone, it
assumes that reader is travelling on a shoestring and would like to have a good
time without breaking the bank.

D.      Written
by experienced travelers, this guide contains absolutely everything you could
ever need to know about Scotland. It is so comprehensive that it is quite
clearly intended to appeal to Scots, too. Covering popular places as well as
those off the beaten track, this guide provides a wealth of information on
various day trips, as well as suggestions on places to stay and eat to suit
every budget. Whether you are interested in historic towns and cities,
beautiful lochs, cliff-castles or quiet fishing villages along the north-east
coast, this book is for you.

E.      This
has been revised for this year and so is the most up-to-date guide available on
Scotland’s top attractions, restaurants and hotels .It is also now suggests a
selection of tours aiming to cover the whole country in just ten days,
including some of Scotland’s finest sights, such as Loch Lomand, the Highlands
and Edinburg. This is ideal for those who simply want to get a ‘taste’ of
Scotland but perhaps not for who prefer a more relaxed approach to holidaying.

F.       Official
Guides are for people who take their sightseeing seriously. The guides are
packed with history and are full of architectural details. There are no
pictures, but lots of diagrams things like medieval buildings plans. The
publishes recently introduced restaurant recommendations for the first time,
and were criticized by some readers, who said that such things should not be in
the guides.

G.     Scotland’s
quietest; most beautiful corners are explored in this guide along with plenty
of suggestions for enjoying a stress-free holiday. As the key to a good
holiday, according to the guide, is to have ‘a unique experience in scenic
surroundings’, the book suggests a variety of ways in which to do this, such sa
staying in a lighthouse or going caving. This book stands out from its
competitors, not lest for its fantastic photographs, illustrations and maps.

The night passed rapidly: I was tired to dream; I

sensible that  Miss Miller had taken her place by my side. When I again

Miller; after words she cold out –‘Form classes!’

A great tumult succeeded for some minutes,
during which miss Miller repeatedly exclaimed, ‘Silence!’ and ‘Order!’ When it
subsided, I saw them all drawn up in four semi-circles, D_____, placed
at the four tables: all held books in their hands, and a great book, like a
Bible, lay on each table, before the vacant seat. A pause of some seconds
succeeded, E_____, vague hum of numbers; Miss Miller walked from class

A distant bell tinkled: immediately three
ladies entered the room each walked to the table and took her seat; Miss Miller
assumed the fourth vacant chair, F_____, and around witch the smallest
of the children were assembled: to this inferior class I was called, and placed
at the bottom of it.

Business now began: the day’s Collect was
repeated, then certain texts O Scripture were said, and to these succeeded a
protracted reading of chapters in the Bible, which lasted an hour. By the time
that exercise was terminated, day fully dawned.

The
lost Continent of Atlantis.

For centuries people  have been speculating about the
existence of the legendary continent of Atlantis. In Greek mythology Atlantis
is described as a large island which was destroyed by an earthquake around
9,000 BC. But could an earthquake account for sinking of great continent such
as Atlantis is believed to have been? Most scientists think it extremely
unlikely. An earthquake might have destroyed part of island continent, or
caused landslides around its shores, but a quake that would have destroyed a huge
land mass is unheard-of.

Had Atlantis been an island with a very low profile, it might have been at
least party submerged by flooding, but Plato describes Atlantis as a
mountainous country. A tidal wave might have washed over Atlantis, but it would
not have washed it away.

And a volcanic eruption could have blown part of the
continent into the ocean, but if Atlantis had been anywhere near the size
claimed by Plato, much would still be towering above the sea.

And where was Atlantis situated? Plato writes that
it was in the western sea or Atlantic Ocean as it called today. If this is
correct, could there be a geological explanation for its disappearance? Before
the theory of continental drift was widely accepted, many geologists supposed
that a continent, Atlantis, must have occupied the present position of the
Atlantic. This continent was thought to have sunk beneath the Atlantic waves.
But today most scientists agree that as we push the continent back to original
places, we effectively squeeze Atlantis off the map. So could Atlantis have
been North America, which, having drifted away, was thought to have been
submerged in the Atlantis? No. The continents are moving apart at the rate of
between one and six inches a year-hardly enough to give rise to Plato’s account
of the submergence of Atlantis in a day and night. Not surprisingly, believers
in Atlantis hotly contest the fights of modern science that seek to dismiss the
existence of the lost continent. If a once-derided theory such as continental drift
can eventually earn the backing of the respectable scientific community, the
Atlantis argue, might not other theories one day gain the same acceptance?
Perhaps human beings existed long before the scientists’ estimates. Perhaps
there was some extraordinary global catastrophe. Perhaps Atlantis did exist
after all.

You have 20 minutes to do this task.

You have received a letter from your
English-speaking pen-friend Rosa who writes:

I’ve had an argument with my
friend Miranda. I’m very upset about it. We haven’t been talking to each other
for a week. Have you ever been in a similar situation? What kinds of things do
you argue about? Do you think I should be the first one to break the ice?

Write a letter to Rosa.

In your letter

   answer her
questions

   ask 3 questions
about her friend and the reason of their quarrel.

Write 100-140 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

You have 40 minutes to do this task.

Comment on the following statement.

Speaker1.  I am trying to read at least one
novel a month. It’s a part of my “intellectual” diet. The diet includes Music,
TV and even Play Station  but try to keep a balance over all. There are times
when I get seriously into a new writer and am distracted until I’ve read
everything. On the other hand I can spend untold hours on Final Fantasy or some
other game if it engages me. But as with a food diet, the odd chocolate binge
won’t hurt you as long as in the long run you get a good balance.

Speaker 2.

I would like to say I love reading Dickens if it
were true-but I just can’t get down to it. I saw a TV version of David
Copperfield and enjoyed it but it is the language in the books I find really
difficult to cope with. All the sentences seem so long and complex. I suppose
it’s just that Dickens belongs to a different age, when people spoke and maybe
even thought differently. On the other hand Shakespeare’s language is difficult
for me, but it doesn’t spoil my enjoyment of that amazing dramatist.

Speaker 3.

I was sat in that armchair that Granddad made.
Somehow I felt myself slip back in time as I turned each page. I became
conscious of my heart beating. Probably it was the room, the furniture, the
decoration; but that book took me somewhere else. I even felt the temperature
in the room drop and expected to see Peter Quint staring sightlessly from the
garden window.

Speaker 4.

I never watch a film based on any book I have
already read. Susie always does and yet she always seems to end up saying “not
as good as the book.” On the other hand it is quite useful to see films based
on books that you ought to read but don’t want. Shakespeare and Dickens on film
is a great help. You get a red hot story without having to get lost for days in
archaic language. On this, Susie and I are in complete agreement.

Speaker 5.

Some people say that conventional books have had
their day. The technology has been surpassed. Like vinyl records and tape
cassettes were to music-the traditional book will be replaced by i-phones,
online delivery or through some other multimedia platform. They say that one
day we’ll no longer read words on paper stuffed between cardboard covers. But I
am not so sure. On the beach or in bed, on the train or at home I like to curl
up with a good old-fashioned, comfortable, paperfilled book.

Speaker 6.

Beck recycles all her books. It’s a nice habit.
Where ever she is, when she reads the last page, there she “sets the book
free”. This means that she writes on the inside cover a message of invitation
to whoever happens to pick the book up next. I happened to get one of hers last
week. She wrote “this book is a love story. You’ll not be able to put it down
until the very last word.” And as usual she was spot on. I hardly got any work
done last week finishing that damn story! You have 15 seconds to complete the
task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you’ll hear the text again.

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds

Задания А1-А7.

Tim: Alice, would you like to see the
pictures of my holiday in Italy?

Alice: Sure, what was it like?

Tim: Ah, the holiday was great! The food was
great! But the traffic was horrible!

Alice: Really? Why was the traffic horrible?

Tim: Actually, the general skill level of
drivers in Italy is rather bad. Driving too fast for conditions, overtaking in
stupid places and driving while talking on a mobile phone are all very common
there.

Alice: Oh, Tim! Did you have any accidents?

Tim: Luckily, we didn’t. But the death rate
on the roads in Italy is not funny at all. Anyway, I don’t want to think about
it!

Alice:  OK, OK, let’s return to your positive
impressions. Oh, what a beautiful picture!

Tim: Yes, this is a picture of the Leaning
Tower of Pisa. It was a great feeling to stand right in front of such a
fantastic building. But, honestly, the tower didn’t seem to be that leaning.

Alice: Incredible! I’ve always wanted to
climb it. Did you do that?

Tim: Yes, we climbed to the top! It was
raining at that day, but it was still wonderful.

Alice: Was it scary?

Tim: No, I wasn’t frightened at all. It’s
not very tall, actually.

Alice: And what’s this?

Tim: That’s a photo of the River Arno in
Florence. That’s the ‘Ponte Vecchio’, which means the ‘Old Bridge’.

Alice: Yeah, I know. It’s like the Tower
Bridge in London.

Tim: Not exactly. Yes, it’s the symbol of
the city but unlike the Tower Bridge, it has small houses on the both sides of
the bridge.

Alice: It’s really charming. And what was
Florence like? Did you like the city?

Tim: It was marvelous. There were beautiful
old medieval buildings in the city, impressive cathedrals and churches and lots
of wonderful museums.

Alice: How was your Italian?

Tim: My Italian wasn’t very good. But many
Italians speak English very well. I was really impressed!

Alice: Oh, this picture looks wonderful.

Tim: Yes, that’s a shot of tasty pizza
served by a beautiful Italian girl! You know, Italians are famous for their
food and wine. So we didn’t miss a chance to try traditional dishes.

Alice: I’m so jealous…I hope to visit this
country some day.

Tim: That’s really great country. I’d
recommend Italy anytime!

Задания А8-А14.

Interviewer: I don’t know about you, but I’ve
always thought that living in a houseboat must be quite romantic. In the studio
with me today is Christine, who lives on a houseboat with her husband and three
children. Christine, romantic?

Christine: Well. I suppose it is in theory.
If you stand on the river bank on a fine summer’s day and look at our boat,
which is brightly painted and very attractive, then yes, I can see why people
think it’s a romantic way to live.  But reality is slightly different!

Interviewer: I mean you’ve got three young
children-how on earth do you stop them falling into the water?

Christine: Well, no one’s fallen in yet and
we’ve been there for three years. But it’s a huge boat. It’s about 30 metres
long and 8 metres wide with five bedrooms and it’s far bigger than our old
house. There’s also a huge kitchen where we spend a lot of time as a family and
we also entertain quite a lot. Our social life has improved enormously since we
moved onto the boat as most people are very curious where we live!

Interviewer: What happens when the weather’s
rough, in a storm for example, do you leap off onto dry land?

Christine: No way! There was a big storm a
few nights ago when a wave hit the boat. We could hear all the pots and pans
swinging about in the kitchen but despite the high winds not a single cup or
saucer fell off the shelves. My husband and I lay awake listening in case
things got really bad, but our children slept through it all and never heard a
thing, whereas in previous house they used to feel frightened.

Interviewer: That’s amazing. Are there any
disadvantages, then, to living on a boat?

Christine: Well, it can be damp, even on a
warm day. I don’t mean that the boat leaks or anything but there’s this moist
feeling to things when you put your clothes on in the morning, for example. But
I do a great deal of cooking and this is one way of dealing with damp as the
warmth from the oven helps dry things out. It’s not convenient to go shopping
on a daily basis, so we have quite a lot of stuff delivered. I bake our own
bread and we have sacks of wheat delivered from a nearby farm. Before moving
onto the boat we bought an old mill and the boys get paid a penny a turn to a
grind the flour. The youngest, Benny, who’s seven gets paid twice as much
because he’s smaller and it’s twice as difficult for him.

Interviewer: Do the children enjoy living on
a boat?

Christine: They love it. Of course they’re at
school all day but in the holidays they have their friends to stay, although we
insist that their friends must be able to swim-just in case. I think wearing
life jackets would make it difficult for them to move around comfortable. But I
make sure that other parents know we live on a boat. And I’m around all the
time. I’d never leave children on a boat alone and their parents know that.

Interviewer: Do you imagine you’ll ever want
to move back to an ordinary house?

Christine: At present I can’t imagine ever
wanting to live in a house again. I love everything about being on a
houseboat-everything that is except the water rats which you can occasionally
see swimming in the river! But perhaps when the children have grown up and left
home we’ll set sail and use the boat to see the world.

Interviewer: Christine, thank you very much
for talking to us…

You have 15 seconds to complete the
task. (Pause 15 seconds.)  Now you will hear the text again.

This is the end of the task. You have 15 seconds to

Speaker A. I’m an only child in the family and I’ve always envied my friends who have brothers and sisters. I really think that it’s great when children can play together and support each other — it teaches them how to take care of other people, how to be kind and helpful. Brothers and sisters usually support each other when they become adults. I think it’s very comforting to feel that support.

Speaker В. One of my earliest childhood memories is about a steel set of medical instruments. Our grandmother told us that it had belonged to her father who had got it from his teacher — a famous doctor. During the war my great granddad was wounded and taken to hospital. Still weak he helped the doctor during the operations as there were no nurses. Now the set of medical tools is kept in my house.

Speaker С. I grew up in a large family. Now my brother and my sisters are adults and we all have families of our own. However, every year they come to our house for our mother’s birthday. It’s always been a very important event for us. When we were kids, we designed different creative presents for her and prepared different performances. We still do the same! We feel like children again and Mum looks young and happy at such moments.

Speaker D. I have very happy childhood memories. We lived in the country, and now I often dream about our pretty house and our nice garden. Our parents spent lots of time with us and we, children, could always ask them for help, advice or just share our worries with them. Now I’m a student and live away from my family in a big city. I often feel lonely and I wish my childhood years could come back for a while.

Speaker E. When I was a child, we lived in the country and I often helped my parents on the farm. It was hard work but I enjoyed it because my father made it look like fun. We grew beans and sold them. Now the farm belongs to me and my brother, and it differs a lot from the farm of my childhood. For the most part jobs are mechanized. We use computers to control the process of crop growing. Our children find it all interesting and make plans on how to make the farm even more efficient.

A−1: I’ve always envied my friends who have brothers and sisters. I really think that it’s great when children can play together and support each other.

B−5: Our grandmother told us that it had belonged to her father who had got it from his teacher — a famous doctor. During the war my great granddad was wounded and taken to hospital.

C−3: However, every year they come to our house for our mother’s birthday. It’s always been a very important event for us.

D−6: I often feel lonely and I wish my childhood years could come back for a while.
