Пояснение.

Hey, Kate. You know that? I’ve just found two pictures suitable for our project “Man’s best friends”. Let me tell you a bit more about them.

They are relevant to our project because in both pictures there are people spending time with their pets. In the first photo there is a boy hugging his dog. They are on the beach looking on the water. The dog is pretty big, a German Shepherd, I suppose. In the second photo there is an old man holding his cat. His cat is white and a little bit fluffy. The old man loves it a lot.

There are a few differences to illustrate our project better. Obviously, on the left there is a typical «dog» person and on the right there is a «cat» person. Also, it seems to me that the dog is the best friend for the boy, meanwhile, the cat is a member of the man’s family.

In my opinion, keeping a cat and a dog as a pet has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, having a dog is similar to being in a friendship with a person. The dog will help somebody out and will treat as it’s best friend, however, it will expect the same kind of care given to it from a person. A cat is much more independent from it’s owner. People can take less care of a cat, for example they do not walk the cat. However, cats usually prefer sleeping to playing as they are animals leading night lifestyle.

As for me, I can say that I’m a typical cat person. I like the way they walk, eat, purr, behave in general. I think that cats are much more elegant than dogs. They smell better as well.

So, shall we use these photos in our project? Call me when you’re ready to discuss if we can use them. Bye-bye.

The first human carrying flight technology was the hot air balloon. While unmanned balloons have been around in some form for thousands of years, the first flight with people aboard was in 1782. The large balloon on top is called an “envelope”. It holds hot air created by a heat source known a burner. The burner creates an open flame by burning a mix of propane and air. Hot air balloons are capable of floating because the hot air inside the envelope has a lower density than the colder air outside. The top of the balloon usually has a vent which allows the pilot to control the speed of ascent or descent. Passengers typically stand in a basket beneath the envelope. While most envelopes have a standard balloon shape, others are designed to look like animals, cartoon characters and other fun objects.

Many lands that had once been swamps were drained or filled in. There are different reasons why people drained swamplands. Some were drained to fight diseases caused by insects that lived in them. Because swamps were considered unpleasant places in which to live and harmful to health, many people thought that unless they were drained the land was worthless.

Other swamps were drained to make new land. As the population grew and more land was needed, people drained swamps or filled them to make room for more farms and factories, more roads and airports.

Few people thought that it might be harmful to get rid of swamps. As swamps disappeared, other things happened. There were both more floods and more droughts than before. There were also more fires, for swamps had acted as firebreaks. Hunters noticed that there was less wild game. Wild life that once lived in the swamps was dying out, because it had no place to live.

People have always told stories and legends to explain natural, but mysterious, occurrences such as the Northern Lights. The Vikings believed the Northern Lights were caused by the shining weapons of warriors. The Alaskan people thought the lights were the souls of salmon, deer and other animals. The Indians told the stories of giants living in the North and thought the lights were their torches.

The Northern Lights are actually caused by electrons from solar winds. They are attracted to the poles by the magnetic fields found there. They mix with gases in the atmosphere, which causes the gases to glow. The Northern Lights are most visible in the far north. They are typically green, purple, red or blue.

Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises the four main islands in addition to numerous smaller islands. Tokyo is the country’s capital and largest city. Mountains dominate Japan’s landscape, covering 75 to 80 per cent of the country. Historically, the mountains were barriers to transportation, limiting the economic development of isolated areas. However, with the development of tunnels, bridges, and air transportation in the modern era, the mountains are no longer an obstacle. The Japanese have long celebrated the beauty of their mountains in art and literature, and today many mountain areas are preserved in national parks. Most of Japan’s people live on plains and lowlands found mainly along the lower courses of the country’s major rivers, on the lowest slopes of mountain ranges, and along the sea coast. This concentration of people makes Japan one of the world’s most crowded countries.

Since ancient times, humans have loved and cherished cats as their pets. Today more than 80 million cats reside in US homes, with an estimated three cats for every dog on the planet. Yet there is still a lot we don’t know about our feline friends – including what they think of their owners. After observing pet cats for several years, scientists have come to an intriguing conclusion: cats don’t really understand people the way dogs do. They tend to feel it is they who own their masters, not vice versa. On the contrary, dogs perceive people as being very different from themselves. As soon as they see a human, they change their behaviour. The way a dog plays with a human is completely different from the way it plays with a dog. Cats are independent creatures and they can easily change their owner without changing their habits.

A few months back I was swimming in the sea, and a dog came into the water and started swimming there too, and seeing it made me smile. I thought of an idea that I’d heard on a podcast about increasing happiness: ‘turn towards the things that bring you joy, and let nice things sink in for at least twenty seconds’, so I stopped and watched it swimming. It wasn’t going anywhere; it was just swimming around in circles with its head just above the water and its legs under the water paddling away. It was a simple yet incredibly enjoyable scene.

Maybe I’m biased. I grew up with dogs, and getting my first dog when I was ten is one of my best childhood memories, but many people around the world would have experienced a similar amount of enjoyment from simply watching a dog swimming like this. So why do we have such a connection to and fondness for these animals, and how did it come to be this way?

Dogs came from wolves, and it seems that the domestication of dogs happened around 20,000 to 40,000 years ago. According to Stephen Kotler, dog-rescuer and author of A Small Furry Prayer, there are two theories about how this might have happened. The first idea is that humans domesticated wolves: people stole wolf cubs and raised them as pets. They kept the friendlier, cuter ones and either killed the wilder ones or sent them back out into the wild. As they continued to do this (selective breeding), the friendlier ones bred and over time their offspring became friendlier and friendlier.

The second theory is that wolves domesticated themselves. They came to eat our rubbish that was left outside caves, and the wolves that felt more comfortable being close to humans got more food, had more cubs, and their friendly genes got passed on. Then the cuter, friendlier cubs were brought inside by humans, and the same selective breeding process slowly turned the wolves into the friendly pets that we now think of as man’s best friend.

Either way, over time, these wolves became more and more a part of our lives and we grew closer and closer to them. They protected us from danger, hunted with us, and kept us warm by sleeping next to us on cold nights. Kotler argues that we humans may have evolved to be closer to and friendlier with wolves, too. Humans who felt a deeper connection to the wolves were more likely to survive and therefore had an evolutionary advantage, he says, so ‘evolution began selecting for traits that made us better wolf lovers’.

It’s estimated that there are around 470 million pet dogs around the world now1, and, as any dog owner knows, there are obvious reasons for this level of popularity: dogs are friendly and affectionate – how nice it is to come home from work and be greeted by your dog wagging its tail excitedly. But according to life coach and meditation teacher Caren Osten, we humans get many additional benefits from our canine friends, some of which might be surprising.

Dogs bring us comfort and help to relieve stress, Osten says. They can also help us to have a sense of purpose, as caring for another (person or animal) is one of the most purposeful things we can do. And, she adds, because dogs tend to be fully present in the moment, whether playing or lying in the sun, this can motivate us to be more present and enjoy the moments. Perhaps this was why watching the dog swimming around in the sea was so enjoyable

Stephen Kotler’s dog rescue project is a sanctuary in New Mexico, and he has taken the connection to dogs a step further than most people. His twelve dogs sleep on his bed, and he describes how over time he became closer and more connected to them, and ended up feeling like part of the pack. In his book, he adds that being close to dogs can have physical health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attacks, and he even suggests that spending time with dogs might be more effective at reducing stress and loneliness than spending time with other people.

Kotler adds that another reason dogs bring us so much happiness is connected to playing, as dogs and humans are among the few species that enjoy playing as adults. But when he takes his dogs out for exercise to a local canyon, he experiences something that is beyond just the enjoyment of playing. While running with them and jumping from rock to rock, he describes how he feels connected to something bigger than an individual self, like he merges with the pack as they run together, and how, while in the pack, he jumps further than he ever could if he stopped and thought about it.

As good as being part of a pack sounds, twelve dogs would be too much for me, as it would for most people, and my current situation means taking care of a dog would be difficult. But for now, I’ll try to remember to stop and watch when I see one playing.

They are often called man’s best friend. In total there are thought to be about 400 million of them
in the world. They are one of the most popular companions for people all over the world. In fact
they are so popular that nearly 1 million people plan to give them most of their savings when they
die.

There are also hundreds of different breeds or kinds of them. What animal am I talking about?
They are of course dogs.

As anyone who has had a dog will know, they are very clever animals. One study showed that a
border collie dog named Chaser could understand over 1,000 different words. For many families,
their pet dog is like another family member. A study showed that many dogs also have their own
chores to do around the house. This might be licking dishes clean after dinner or bringing the in
newspaper.

Astronomers are constantly discovering new things in our solar system. Some of the newest findings involve water sources. These findings are of tremendous importance, as water is the key element for life to exist.

Some of these water sources have recently been found on objects that we’ve already learned quite a lot about. The moon, to which man has actually travelled, seems to have frozen pools of water present in a few areas. Mars, on which probes have landed on the surface, is believed to have enormous amounts of frozen water in its ice caps.

Other objects further from Earth are believed to contain water. Some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are thought to have very large, undersea lakes deep below their icy surface. Whether or not life exists in these places is yet to be revealed.

Man's Best Friend

If you’ve spent any time with native English speakers, watched American and British TV shows, or read English books you’ll probably have come across the phrase Man’s Best Friend. Man’s Best Friend does not refer to an actual person, a favourite car or even the latest mobile phone. Man’s Best Friend is – of course – the faithful dog.

First of all let’s make something clear; the man in this phrase (and this article) is of course the human being. Dogs don’t care if you are a man or a woman.

Dog’s Years

This phrase has come about as a result of the long relationship and close bond between man and dog. For hundreds of years the dog has been a faithful and loyal servant for man. Dogs have been hunting, tracking, fetching and guarding for man for centuries. You can read about an early example of the close bond between man and dog in The Legend of Gelert. This legend goes back to the 13th century. Man’s Best Friend has always been there for us. This quote from Voltaire (French philosopher) dates back to the 18th century:

It seems that nature has given the dog to man for his defence and for his pleasure. Of all the animals it is the most faithful: it is the best friend man can have.

Today dogs are more of a companion than a servant. Dogs are the perfect companion because they are loyal and always pleased to see us. All over the world workers are greeted on their return home by a grin and a wagging tail. Dogs don’t ask for much in return – some food, an occasional stroke and perhaps a walk now and then.
