Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is a rapid transit system serving Moscow and the neighbouring Moscow region towns of Krasnogorsk and Reutov. This is the second in intensity metro system in the world after the Tokyo subway. The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 298.8 km, with 182 stations.

The first line was opened on May 15, 1935 ___ (A) to the station “Park Kultury”, with a branch to the station “Smolenskaya”. The Moscow Metro was originally named after L. Kaganovich. The Moscow metro
The Moscow metro is very important as a means of transport in the Russian capital, in particular during rush hours. It has more metro visitors than the New York subway and London underground put together! The Moscow metro works efficiently and the trains run very frequently and very fast. The Moscow metro is one of the most beautiful subways in the world. 44 of the stations are listed as cultural heritage sites.
The first plans for a metro system in Moscow date back to the times of the Russian Empire. One such project was actively discussed in 1902, but at that time the local government declined it in favor of trams. Indeed trams in those days were very popular and brought lots of money into the city’s budget.
Then the plans for the construction of a metro system in Moscow were postponed by World War I and the October Revolution. As a result, the construction of the metro was only started in 1931 after the Soviet Union was established. The first 13 stations opened on May 15th, 1935. They were wonders of engineering and design.
Now, the Moscow Metro has 13 lines and more than 200 stations. Each line has a name, a number and a colour that identifies it. The Moscow metro has a circular line that links all metro lines. There is a legend concerning the appearance of the circle line, which had not been planned in the original project. The legend says that at a meeting devoted to metro construction Joseph Stalin put his cup of coffee on the metro map. It left a brown circle around the city centre. Joseph Stalin showed the circle to the builders and ordered the construction of such a line. It was how the circle line appeared and it explains why it has a brown colour on the metro map.
While travelling on the radial lines of the Moscow Metro to the centre, the stations are announced by men’s voices and while going from the centre, women announce them. On the circle line men’s voices announce the stations when going in the clockwise direction, while women’s voices are used when going counterclockwise. This is done to make navigation simpler for blind people in the metro.
The Moscow metro carries almost seven million people daily. The people who work there use every effort to ensure the comfort of the passengers. All trains have free wireless internet access, so that the passengers can read their emails or chat with their friends on their way to work.
Recently the ‘Music in the Metro’ project has started. 30 talented and well-trained musicians give different concerts to the metro passengers. All concerts are held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (apart from rush hours) absolutely free. There is no special stage –the musicians perform in different stations of the metro. Muscovites really like the concerts, and ‘Music in the Metro’ has become a regular event in the Moscow metro. Sometimes, walking through the metro, you can listen to a top-quality concert.

Bill: Hi Peggy! How’s it going?

Peggy: Hi Bill! I’m doing great! Guess what, I’m going to Moscow for my study abroad program next year. This is my first trip to Russia!

Bill: That’s fantastic, Peggy! I was there during my gap year. I can give you some advice about what to see and do there if you like.

Peggy: That would be great! I was hoping you’d be able to help me out.

Bill: Well, the nice thing about Moscow is that you won’t need a car. The public transportation system is one of the best in the world and the metro stations are very efficient and also beautiful. Tourists come from all over the world to see them.

Peggy: Oh! That’s good to hear. I was thinking about buying a bicycle to travel around Moscow. But I guess, it’s not necessary.

Bill: It’s true that Moscow is becoming more bicycle-friendly. There are special lanes for bikes and you can even rent them around the city for a small fee, but there’s still a lot of traffic and pedestrians to navigate through and it’s too cold and slippery in the winter for biking.

Peggy: Right! What about food? You know, I’m a vegetarian.

Bill: Well, being a vegetarian is not as common in Russia as it is in America, but it’s becoming more and more popular in Moscow, and you can find specialty stores that sell things like tofu and other products for vegetarians, as well as vegetarian cafes. In addition, there are a lot of great dairy products like kefir and cottage cheese that you will love that you can find in any supermarket.

Peggy: Cool! Another thing I was wondering about is where I can go to watch movies. I’m a really avid film-goer and I don’t like missing new releases. The problem is, my Russian isn’t so good and I heard that in Russia all foreign films are dubbed into Russian.

Bill: That’s true. Sometimes it’s really hard to find films shown in English. There are a few places though that show films in English with Russian subtitles. These are often artsy intellectual places for Russians who know English, and they don’t often sell popcorn there. You won’t be able to find blockbuster films there, either.

Peggy: That’s ok. I prefer watching more artistic films anyway. I also don’t care much for popcorn, so it’s not a big deal. What about places to see? I know about all the major attractions. But I’m sure there must be some less well-known sights that I shouldn’t miss.

Bill: Since you are into movies, you should check out Mosfilm studio. They have excursions there where you can see Russian film sets and props for classic Soviet films. It’s extremely fascinating. There are also a large number of lesser known museums that were actually the homes of famous Russian writers and artists that show how they really lived. I especially loved Tolstoy’s and Dostoyevsky’s museums.

Peggy: That sounds wonderful! Thank you, Bill for giving me such great advice! I’m really looking forward to my year abroad!

As of 2011, the Moscow Metro has 185 stations and its route length is 305.7 kilometres (190.0 mi). The system is mostly underground, with the deepest section 84 metres (276 ft) at the Park Pobedy station. The Moscow Metro is the world’s second most heavily used rapid transit system after Tokyo’s twin subway.

The Great Kremlin Palace, built in 1849, is the most impressive structure inside the Kremlin. Other famous Kremlin palaces are the Granovitaya Palace (built in 1491) and the Terem (built in 1636). Among many cathedrals, now used mainly as museums, are the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Archangel Cathedral, eachwith five gilded domes, and the Cathedral of the Annunciation (built in 13th—I4th century), with nine gilded domes. The bell tower of Ivan the Great has the height of 98 metres. On a nearby pedestal is the Tsar Bell (nearly 200 tons), one of the largest in the world. A recent addition to the Kremlin is the Palace of Congresses, completed in 1961. St. Basil’s Cathedral, a masterpiece of Russian architecture was built in 1561 to celebrate Russian victory over Kazan kingdom. It has coloured domes, stands at one end of Red Square and at the other end there is Historical Museum. Other places of interest in Moscow include the Central Lenin Stadium and the tail Ostankino TV tower, which has a revolving restaurant. Moscow has a modern railway underground system (Metro) famous for its marble-walled stations. Moscow is a scientific and cultural center with a lot of institutes, universities, libraries and museums. The city leads a vast cultural life. It has a lot of cinemas, clubs, concert halls, more than 40 drama and musical theatres, including the Bolshoi Theatre, the Art Theatre, the Maly Theatre, the Vakhtangov Theatre. Muscovites are proud of their museums: the Tretyakov Art Gallery, the A. S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the State Historical Museum. Crowds of people visit Tretyakov Gallery admiring beautiful pictures of Russian painters. There arc a lot of big plants and factories in Moscow. Today our metro is one of the biggest and busiest in the world. It has a huge network that consists of 215 metro stations and it’s 365 kilometers long. But of course, it was not always this way.	Сегодня столичное метро является одним из самых крупных и оживленных во всем мире. Оно представляет собой глобальную сеть, состоящую из 215 станций и имеющую протяженность почти 365 километров. Но, конечно же, так было не всегда.
At the beginning of the XX century there was no Metro but there were plans on how to build it. The government started doing in the 30s. And on May 15, 1935 the grand opening finally took place in Soviet Union. Back then it was only 11,2 kilometers long.	В начале ХХ века метро в Москве еще не существовало, но уже тогда имелось несколько проектов его постройки. К реализации одного из таких планов правительство преступило лишь в 30-х годах. И вот, 15 мая 1935 года состоялось торжественное открытие первого в СССР метрополитена. Тогда протяженность его линий составляла всего 11, 2 км.

Since that time our metro has been constantly developing. Even during the second world war they built 7 new stations.	С тех пор работы по расширению и преобразованию метро велись в нашей стране беспрерывно. Даже во время Великой Отечественной войны было построено 7 новых станций.
Building of transport system so deep under the ground was a unique achievement for our country so they had a special slogan for it: «Let’s create a palace for people!» And indeed, most of the stations were built with solemnity and monumental features. Some of them such as «Mayakovskay», «Revolution Square» and «Teatralnaya» can be called masterpieces. Nowadays the Moscow Metro continues developing. For example, in 2002 when «Dmitriy Donskoy’s boulevard» station was open the Moscow Metro went beyond MKAD. Right now they are building 46 new stations and rebuilding the old ones. Generally speaking, the Moscow Metro is getting bigger and bigger every year which means it’s getting more comfortable for residents that started buying apartments far from the city center. So today the Moscow Metro continues its development.	Сегодня Московский метрополитен продолжает активно развиваться.
