“Write
about the fate of Oliver Twist”

Oliver Twist — a boy who fell into troubles. It was to
show the reality that the author wished, describing the adventures of little
Oliver. The criminal world was cruel, and to be saved, you must keep the core
of good within yourself.

The «adventures» of Oliver begin at birth:
his mother dies right after giving birth in a workhouse. His childhood he
spends on the farm of Mrs. Mann, which was analogous to the current orphanage.
Next to him are the same children whose parents lost them or died. Dickens
deliberately calls them «young violators of the law», thereby
ridiculing the unfair, sometimes absurd English laws, in particular the Law on
the Poor. At the age of nine, the boy got to work for the undertaker in transit
through the workhouse, from which he was deported for requesting the addition
of porridge-a terrible crime at that time, or was it so?

Unable to withstand life in the undertaker, the hero
of the novel decided to escape. It was not so much in Mr. Sowerberry himself,
as in his wife and Noah Kleipoli, who especially scoffed at Oliver. His escape
was heading for London, Oliver knew that this is a big city, hence, and great
opportunities. On the way to the planned point, Oliver was met by Jack Dawkins,
who later led the guy to Feigin. If up to this point, it was simply considered
a zero, now they forced you to steal! Subsequently, other characters appear,
such as Sykes, Monks and others. None of them care that it is just a small
child, and no one thinks about it, but only uses it for their own purposes.

However, all the vicissitudes of the life of an honest
and gentle Oliver have a successful conclusion. Negative characters — Sykes,
Feigin, Monks — met their death worthy of their death. Oliver began to live
with Mr. Brownlow in peace and harmony. Of course, the finale evokes pleasant
and warm emotions, but looking back, we can once again make sure that the path
to this finale was super complicated, and for a ten-year-old child even more
so. The author was able to show what he planned: dirty living quarters, cruel
acts, fear for his life, because one careless act — and those on the
guillotine.

Summarizing, let us say that «The Adventures of
Oliver Twist» were and continue to be useful for the society. The
luxurious life of a thief is a fiction, and hard work and your inner kindness
is your only way to success.

My favourite book

The role of books in our life

First of all, I would like to say a few words about the role of books in our life. I think books are our best friends. While reading we have an opportunity to look into the future or into the past. Books form our values and character. Besides, they help us in self-education. What is more important, books teach us to be kind, hard-working, brave and honest and to understand each other better.

My favourite book

I’m really fond of reading. Whenever I have got free time I spend it with a book. There are a lot of famous writers in the world known for their wonderful books but my favourite one is “Oliver Twist” written by Charles Dickens in 1838. This is a very sad story with a happy end though. In his novel Dickens wrote about poverty and an unromantic criminal world. The book also exposed the cruelty with which poor children were treated in London at that time.

Content of the novel

It tells us about an orphan who was born into a life of poverty and misfortune. He came across lots of terrible events in the early years of his life and it can be stated that “he died several times” but the desire to live and to find justice in this world helped him to survive, to reunite with his lost relatives and to finally become happy. In this book a constant struggle of good and evil is described. You can’t help crying when reading it as you start to live the life of the main character. I truly believe that “Oliver Twist” is a masterpiece of English literature.

Conclusion

Summing up I want to say that a book is one of the wonders of the world. We must treat them with great care.

OLIVER TWIST

BOOK SUMMARY

Dickens, Charles. Oliver Twist. New York: Longman Edition, 1981, pp. 353

This book is a fiction novel set in the 19th century. I found the main theme of he book to be about the social problems at that time in England. The main character in the book is Oliver Twist. He is a young orphan boy. The book tells his life story and his struggle to find his family and a good home. The other important characters in the book are Fagin, Bet Dawkins (Dodger), Mr. Brownlow, and Nancy. Fagin is an old Jew who is the leader of the gang of thieves, he keeps the stolen goods. Dodger is one of the thieves in the gang, he first brought Oliver in and is his best friend. Mr. Brownlow is the first person who protects Oliver. He gives him a good home and the possibility to learn and study. Nancy is a girl who is also one of the members in the gang, but helps Oliver at the cost of her own life.

Oliver is very badly treated during his childhood years. He has to work hard and gets almost nothing to eat. When he asks for more to eat, the parish authorities decide that Oliver shall be ’sold’ to the Undertaker Sowerberry who can feed him and teach him the ways of a job. From there he runs away to London and comes in the world of thieves. When he finally meets a friendly person (Mr. Brownlow) he is then kidnapped by the thieves. In the end he finds a good home and also finds out who his parents were and inherits a sum of money.

I found Oliver Twist to be a very exciting, suspenseful, sorrowful, and interesting novel. I would recommend the novel to anyone who likes a hard to put down book about hardships, and sorrow but with a happy ending. I recommend the book because you really get into the novel, feeling what Oliver goes through and you also feel a strong hatred to people who mistreat Oliver.

I do think that Charles Dickens accomplished his main purpose and maybe even more in the book. I think he tried to write a novel that takes you through the hardships of a little orphan boy in a harsh and cruel world. I also found the book to be quite realistic. Everything in it was believable from the characters to the description of London. Remarkably I did not find the book to be the slightest bit biased.

Charles Dickens is an extremely well known, and accomplished writer both in his day and in ours. Dickens s novels mostly dealt with his own day and environment. Some of his best and infamous novels include Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Tale Of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, and Nicholas Nickleby.

The characters were one of the most intriguing parts of the novel. The characters were all interesting, unpredictable, and believable. For instance Oliver Twist is an orphan boy, and in the book he does exactly what any orphan boy would do look for his parents and family. Another aspect of Oliver in the novel that is believable, is how he is always very polite to people in higher authority than him. It s like if he is terrified to say anything wrong. The plot and setting are also very believable in the way he describes the people and places in London.

Oliver Twist was written for the general public. I found the novel to be easily readable. The style the novel was written in was descriptive English. The book was also extremely easy to follow making it very hard to put the book down, you just want to know what will happen to Oliver next. The book helped me to understand the social aspects of the people and town of London in that time. It also taught me the style and the types of books that were written in the 19th century. Overall I found Oliver Twist to be an extraordinary piece of literature.

The English realist writer C. Dickens in the novel «Oliver Twist» fully reveals the problem of the poor condition of the masses of people. All that was in the story — the hero, the child and the people around him.

The hero of the novel, Oliver, was born in a workhouse, which initially refers him to the class of disadvantaged people. In the workhouses of the 1930s – 1940s, according to English law, such a regime was established that turned them into a «Bastille for the poor.» Stunted, exhausted, eternally hungry children grow up in them, not living, but trying to survive. The fate of such weak children as Oliver was sealed, and only a miracle could save them;

Any attempt to protest is cruelly suppressed and punished by educators. «The Shrew» Oliver, for example, is becoming one of the candidates for the gallows, because he dared to ask for supplements of liquid gruel. He is subjected to solitary confinement, cruel flogging, and then trying to give a despotic chimney sweep who has already scored the death of several boys, and the undertaker.

In the second part of the novel, Oliver, fleeing from his master, receives new life lessons in London, where he is surrounded by criminals — a gang of thieves. The young Oliver is now raised by the purchase of stolen goods Feigin, the robber Saika, the prostitute Nancy and the sinister «gentleman» Monks. They are trying to get the boy to engage in thief fishing, but Oliver was strong in nature and refused to participate in vile projects. However, brought up by the criminal world, Nancy has kept a warm soul, she protects and helps Oliver.

Dickens was conscious of himself as a preaching writer, so he somewhat idealized his heroes. So, Oliver Twist is kind, truthful, virtuous, and no dirt of the world around him can stain him. And the kind people who meet on his way are a kind of reward to the boy for his devotion. So Mr. Brownlow is the first unselfish savior of the orphan, whom Oliver later fell in love with all his heart.

Текст Oliver Twist с переводом.

Oliver Twist

The boys at the workhouse ate in a large stone hall. At one end there was a copper, out of which the master ladled gruel at mealtimes. Each boy had only one ladleful and no more, except on public holidays when he had two ounces and a quarter of bread.
The bowls never needed washing as the boys polished them with their spoons until they shone. When they had done this, they would sit staring at the copper with such eager eyes as if they could easily eat the very bricks of which it was made. Meanwhile, they licked their fingers trying to catch any stray splashes of gruel.
Generally, boys have excellent appetites and so Oliver and his companions suffered from slow starvation for three months. They finally got so wild with hunger that one boy, who was somewhat tall for his age and not at all used to that sort of thing because his father had owned a small bakery, said to his companions that unless he had another spoon of gruel daily, he was afraid that one night he might eat the boy who slept next to him. He seemed to have a wild, hungry look in his eye and the others entirely believed him. A meeting was held and lots were drawn to see who should walk up to the master after supper that evening and ask for more. The task fell to Oliver Twist.
The evening arrived and the boys took their places. The master, in his cook’s apron, stood beside the copper with his assistants behind him. The gruel was served out and a long grace was said. After the gruel disappeared, the boys whispered to each other and winked at Oliver, while his neighbours nudged him. Oliver was desperate with hunger and misery. He rose from the table and, walking towards the master with his bowl, said, ‘Please, sir, I want some more.’
The master was a fat, healthy man but he turned very pale. He gazed in astonishment at the boy for some seconds and then held on to the copper for support. His assistants were paralysed with wonder and the boys with fear.
‘What?’ said the master eventually in a faint voice. “Что?” – наконец-то, спросил хозяин слабым голоском.
‘Please, sir,’ replied Oliver, ‘I want some more.’ “Пожалуйста, сэр”, – ответил Оливер, – “Я хочу еще немного”.
The master hit Oliver’s head with the ladle, held him tightly in his arms and shrieked aloud for the policeman.
