Voice in the form of the verb which shows the relation between the action and its subject. There are two voice in English: the active and the passive. The active voice shows that the subject it the doer of the action. The passive voice shows that the not doer of the action.
The passive voice is analytical form in Modern English. It is built up by means of the verb to be and the past participle of the given verb. The verb to get is sometimes used instead of to be.
My jacket got caught on a nail. | Мой пиджак зацепился за гвоздь. |
He got struck by a stone. | Его ударили камнем. |
In the passive voice the continuous aspect has only two tenses, present and past. Instead of the future and the perfect tenses, the corresponding tenses of the common aspect are used.
The children were put to bed | Детей уложили спать |
She has been putting children to bed for an hour | Его ударили камнем |
The passive voice is used in the following instances:
The active subject is unknown | I am told he has left London | Мне сказали, что он покинул Лондон. |
A greater interest in the object | He was called first. | Его вызвали первым. |
The subject is not mentioned for tact | You’ve been told not to touch it! | Тебе же было сказано- не трогать! |
In English not only transitive verbs have the forms of the passive voice but also intransitive verbs with a prepositional object. In the passive they form a phraseological unit:
Nobody likes to be laughed at | Никто не любит, когда над ним смеются. |
They are spoket about. | О них говорят. |
A doctor was sent for. | За доктором послали. |
I think it will be approved of. | Я думаю, что это будет одобрено. |
It can’t be depended on. | На это нельзя полагаться. |
It can’t be insisted on. | На этом нельзя настаивать. |
This is the music to be listened to. | Вот такую музыку надо слушать. |
The book was looked for. | Эту книгу искали. |
It need be put anend to. | С этим надо покончить. |
Children are taken care of. | О детях заботятся. |
It must be paid attention to. | Этому надо уделить внимание. |

These verbs in the passive voice are translated in the active voice:

There are verbs having two direct object:

envy smb., smth. | She ienvied by all. | Ей все завидуют. |
forgive smb., smth. | She was forgiven her absence. | Ей простили её отсутствие. |
Her absence was forgiven her. | Её отсутствие ей простили. |
There are verbs having the direct and indirect object.

The Non-Finite Forms of the Verb
The Non-Finite Forms of the Verb are three in number: the infinitive. The participle and the gerund.
The Infinitive
The Infinitive is a non-finite form of the verb which names an action.
The Infinitive has six forms:
