(Indirect Speech/Reported Speech).

Direct Speech

Bob said, “Paris is great.”

Indirect Speech

Bob said (that) Paris was great.

He says, “I have your T-shirt.” –
He says that he has my T-shirt. –

Past Tense.
Present Simple → Past Simple
Present Continuous → Past Continuous
Present Perfect → Past Perfect

(Direct speech)

(Indirect speech)

“I am reading a book”, he explained. «

He explained that he was reading a book.

“I always drink coffee”, she said.

She said that she always drank coffee.

Past Simple → Past Perfect
Present Perfect → Past Perfect

(Direct speech)

(Indirect speech)

“Bill arrived on Saturday”, he said.

He said that Bill had arrived/ arrived on Saturday.

Past Perfect → Past Perfect

(Direct speech)

(Indirect speech)

He said, “We had finished our work by five o’clock.”

He said that they had finished their work by five o’clock.

Future Simple → Future Simple in the Past

(Direct speech)

(Indirect speech)

“She will come soon.” «

They told me that she would come in soon time.

can → could
will → would
shall → should
may → might
Но формы Past Tense от модальных глаголов could, would, should, might в косвенной речи сохраняются.

(Direct speech)

(Indirect speech)

“We will go home.” «

She said that they would go home.

She said, “You could help my sister.”

She said that I could help her sister.

(Direct speech)

(Indirect speech)

“I must clean the room.” «

He said he must/ had to clean the room.

1. What’s the situation?

Reported speech: 5

1. What’s the situation?
