Feng Shui
On the face of it, there is little to connect the oriental art of Feng Shui with the world of hammers, power drills and paint. But the ancient Chinese philosophy, which involves changing the design of your living or working space to improve your fortune, is proving to be a big hit in the world of “Do-It-Yourself” stories, where people go to buy building materials and tools.
Two vast new DIY superstores have been designed in the UK following Feng Shui guidelines, and their business is booming. Both store managers maintain their success is due to the positive energy that has been chanelled into their shops by Feng Shui experts, who were called in for advice before the final decisions were made about the design of the new buildings.
“I first encountered Feng Shui when I went to the opening of our company’s first store in Taiwan. Everyone there takes it so seriously you cannot fail to be impressed,” said David Ingliss, store manager.
Mr Ingliss’s hosts in Taiwan told him of the Hong Kong millionaire who relocated his business empire into a new skyscraper. However, soon after the move, the business began to go down. In desperation the businessman called in the Feng Shui experts, who said that because his new office block was round “it” was like a huge cigarette, and all the energy was burning off through the roof. They said the only thing he could do was to build a swimming pool on the roof, which he did. And to this day there is an office block in Hong Kong with a swimming pool 40 floors up which no one ever uses, but there is a successful company underneath it.
“Some people may think Feng Shui is just mystical rubbish and I must admit there is a superstitious element to it,” said Mr Ingliss. “But much of it is just common sense and has a direct relevance to good selling. Experts believe that things shouldn’t be messy and crowded, so we made a policy of keeping the aisles wide and spacious.” Mr Ingliss’s store with a floor area greater than two football pitches, has been described as a DIY Disneyland, which he takes as a great compliment. And it has also been one of the most successful in its first year of any of the chain of stores.
Jon Dorset, manager of a sister store, also pays close attention to advice on colour, lighting and especially on the distribution of indoor plants to provide clear and welcoming atmosphere.
“I’m not sure that I believe in the magical side to it, but I did move a mirror at home that was facing the front door- that is very unlucky apparently- and it actually just looks better in its new place,” said Mr Dorset.
1 What did the Feng Shui experts do for the UK stores?
- They gave some advice about business.
- They taught the managers their philosophy.
- They made suggestions about design.
- They helped to build the stores.
2 What impressed Mr Ingliss in Taiwan?
- The people’s attitude to Feng Shui
- The opening of a new store
- How serious everyone seemed
- The amount of business there was
3 What does “it” refer to?
- A cigarette
- The building
- Some energy
- The roof
4 Why was the swimming pool built?
- To provide somewhere for the employees to relax
- To stop the building from falling down
- To make the building safer in case of fire
- To stop the building’s energy from being lost
5 What does Mr Ingliss think about Feng Shui?
- It is superstitious rubbish
- It can give you more energy
- It can help your sales
- It doesn’t tell you anything new
6 What is meant by ‘a DYI Disneyland’?
- A very large building
- A DIY store which is enjoyable to visit
- Somewhere for all the family
- A store where there are lots of things to do
7 What do Mr Ingliss’s and Mr Dorsett’s store both have?
- Successful garden departments
- Long opening hours
- Leisure areas
- Lots of space for customers

Parachuting is fun, safe and once you know the routine, you’ll feel really confident about stepping out of that plane. Everyone can manage it and it can really change your attitude to adventure sports.
C Change is an inevitable part of the business cycle and it is crucial to plan and deal with it properly. At first, the organisation needs to accept the change in circumstances, whether for the better or not. The next steps depend on the extent of the change, in other words, if it is something routine and of low impact, or something with wide implications for the business.

- that are displayed during the nesting season
- while the city has grown up around them
- and admire the changing leaves as autumn arrives
4. where they are not allowed or should be kept on a lead
5. who are tired of the noise, crowds and excitement of sightseeing
6. who does not know the route to the place of destination
7. that take cyclists away from traffic
Пропуск A
Tourists _____________ can always relax in a lovely, quiet London park.
5 — who are tired of the noise, crowds and excitement of sightseeng.
Пропуск A — Ответ 5
- that are displayed during the nesting season
- while the city has grown up around them
- and admire the changing leaves as autumn arrives
4. where they are not allowed or should be kept on a lead
5. who are tired of the noise, crowds and excitement of sightseeing
6. who does not know the route to the place of destination
7. that take cyclists away from traffic
Tourists _ (Какие ) _ who ___________ can always relax in a lovely, quiet London park.
Пропуск D
The Royal Parks provide fantastic green routes in London __________________ and .. .
7 — that take cyclists away from traffic.
Пропуск D — Ответ 7
7-that take cyclists away from traffic
1-that are displayed during the nesting season
The Royal Parks provide fantastic green routes in London which-that __ ( Какие именно дороги? )) ________________ and through some of the most attractive areas of the capital.
Пропуск E
Dogs are welcome in all the Royal Parks, although there are some places _____________.
4 — where they are not allowed or should be kept on a lead.
Dogs are welcome in all the Royal Parks, although there are some places _ ( where ) ____________.
So it is necessary to observe the warning signs _____________________.
1 — that are displayed during the nesting season.
- that are displayed during the nesting season
- that take cyclists away from traffic
So it is necessary to observe the warning signs __ Какие именно знаки ( that ) которые отображаются в течение сезона гнездования.
There are ideal places to relax and sunbathe in summer, enjoy gorgeous flower beds in spring _________________.
А значит единственно логичным вариантом здесь будет часть предложения начинающаяся с союза and — and admire the changing leaves as autumn arrives.
Ответ: A B C D E F 4 1 6 7 2 5
обстоятельства времени (# 2) и места (# 4) while -where .
1) to relax and sunbathe, 2) enjoy and admire и относящиеся к
8 years.
Driverless cars
1. According to the author driverless cars will become cheap enough for most people to buy within the following …
1) 8 years.
2) 15 years.
3) 7 years.
4) 20 years.
Driverless cars are expected to be rolling into the streets within the next 20 years. In fact, they’ve legally been on the roads for the past years, approved for testing purposes. It is predicted that driverless vehicles will be commercially available at a high cost within 7 years, but it may take a no ther 8 years for prices to drop enough to spur mass consumption .
Today, the discussions focus primarily on the shifting of accident liability to manufacturers and all the goodness that comes along with reducing accidents.
Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the text?
1. driverless car operator won’t be resposible for accidents
2. the age required to operate a driverless car is likely to rise
3. driverless cars may increase the number of road accidents
4. the driverless car will voice-activated
Чтобы убедиться в правильности варианта 1 внимательно смотрим на первое предложение второго абзаца, в котором есть фраза — the shifting of accident liability to manufactures — перенос ответственности за аварии на производителя.
To operate a driverless car, their owners will be required to…
1. set the destination on the GPS
2. have experience in programming
3. obtain a collision insurance
4. have a special license
The concept of a “driver” will be replaced with that of an “operator”, who simply programs the vehicle’s GPS to arrive at the desired destination and pushes the “Start” button to begin the trip. Since judgment will no longer be required of the operator, they won’t need a driver’s license. Theoretically, a 10-year-old child could independently take the car to school in the morning.
The attitude of the author towards the driverless cars may be described as…
1.optimistic
2. negative
3.indifferent
4.unsure

1. As we know,
approximately fifty years ago television was introduced, making the world
smaller by bringing images from all four corners of the world into our homes.
Over the last decade or so, a breakthrough in technology has come into our
lives which is making the world even smaller: the Internet. With a PC and a
telephone line, we are now connected to the whole world in a matter of seconds.
2. It is now
possible to speak to relatives and friends anywhere in the world cheaply and
quickly. It is even possible, with something called a webcam, to see and hear
them at the same time. It was not that long ago that the only way to
communicate with family members who were far away was by letter, which could
take days or sometimes weeks to reach its destination.
3. The Internet also
allows us to access a world of facts, figures and knowledge. If we have a
question on any subject at all from history to mathematics or philosophy to
geography, it can be discovered on the Net. We can find out the latest news or
what the weather is going to be like. Many subjects that required the reading
of books and were once only a valuable to a few people are now available to
everybody.
4. The Internet not
only means that we can communicate with loved ones but also with complete
strangers. By using “chat” services, it is possible to meet and exchange ideas
with people from all over the world. It is sometimes unbelievable to think that
the person we are writing to may be thousands of miles away, living in a
completely different culture with a way of life that is nothing like our own.
Of course, to be able to do this, we must speak the same language and that’s
why most communication on the Internet takes place in English.
5. Other services
are also available through the Internet. One of these, which provides hours of
pleasure for many people is the ability to download songs and music from other
people. This has also helped to bring down cultural barriers as we are able to
hear all the different kinds of music that exist all over the world. This helps
us to understand other cultures better and makes us familiar with what used to
be regarded as something completely foreign and strange to us.

38.1 Spending free time has always been fun for teenagers. While doing a project on how teenagers relax after a busy day in Zetland, I have found a table containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.
According to the table, approximately third of all the teenagers in Zetland choose having a hobby or spending time with friends as their favourite pastime (38% and 31% respectively). Sleeping comes third in popularity with 15% of the surveyed. Surprisingly, only 6% of the respondents like eating tasty food in order to relax after a busy day, and it is the least preferred free time activity.
The data analysis reveals that walking in the open air, chosen by 10% of the adolescents, is almost three times less popular than hanging out with friends. It is quite understandable why walking in parks and gardens is less preferable: modern teenagers like meeting in the shopping centres, cafes and cinemas.
Although modern teenagers are quite active in spending their free time, they seem to neglect reading and other ways of broadening their horizons, so it seems to be a problem. To solve this problem local authorities could promote reading in public places like parks or youth centres by involving celebrities into this activity. Thus, reading and discussing could regain their popularity as a way of relaxing after a busy day.
In conclusion, I believe relaxing well is very important in our lives. Working hard is good but having a rest is essential. (248 words)
38.2 Nowadays literature becomes more and more popular and many people are fond of it. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out why people in Zetland should study literature. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the diagram.
According to the data, people in Zetland have quite a wide range of reasons when it comes to studying literature. It is clear, that the vast majority of the respondents think about widening horizons as well as escaping from daily routine (38% and 22% respectively). At the same time learning about the past is also quite popular with the surveyed, 18% of them have named it as the aim of reading.
It is worth mentioning that the opportunity to understand human nature encourages people to read more than the possibility to discuss books with friends. To my mind, psychological literature becomes very popular nowadays and people prefer reading these books alone.
However, there are various problems that people can face studying literature. For instance, reading classical books needs a company to discuss them with. One solution to this problem is to organize discussing clubs for readers there they can meet professors and theater actors, read together and talk about serious literature.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that studying literature is significant for people. I hope people will be able to learn more reading different book genres as well as studying biographies of the authors. (246 words)

It’s easy to get excited about making changes in your organization when you’re the force behind the change, but not everyone may share your enthusiasm.
Imagine you’re implementing a new CRM for your organization. You’ve been working on this project in the background for a while, and now you’re ready to get started – but you’re getting resistance to change from all sides, resistance that is hugely impacting your change management plan.
Maybe some people are digging in their heels and refusing to adopt the new system. Others may be frustrated and confused by the software but are afraid to speak up. Meanwhile, morale is low, and tensions are high. If the situation is mishandled, the transition to your new CRM is bound to fail.
While resistance is somewhat natural and inevitable, it’s not insurmountable. To overcome it, you must understand the reasons behind the resistance and work to move past them.
What are the top causes of resistance to change?
- Mistrust and lack of confidence
- Emotional responses
- Fear of failure
- Poor communication
- Unrealistic timelines
What Is Resistance to Change?
Resistance to change is the reluctance of adapting to change when it is presented. Employees can be either overt or covert about their unwillingness to adapt to organizational changes. This can range from expressing their resistance publicly, to unknowingly resisting change through their language or general actions.

Individual resistance vs organizational resistance
- Individual resistance occurs whens employees resist change based on their unique perceptions, personalities, and needs. Things like job security, habit, and economic factors have a massive influence on individual resistance.
- Organizational resistance is the tendency for an organization as a whole to resist change and want to maintain the status quo. Companies that suffer from organizational resistance become inflexible and are unable to adapt to environmental or internal demands for change. Some of the signs that organizational resistance is in play include internal power struggles, poor decision-making processes, and bureaucratic organizational structures.
5 Most Common Reasons for Organizational Change Resistance in 2023
While there can be several reasons why an employee is resistant to organizational change, here are the five most common reasons:
1. Mistrust and lack of confidence
When employees don’t trust or feel confident in the person making the change, their resistance to it can be a huge barrier. Change advisor and author Rick Maurer believes that lack of confidence in change-makers is the most overlooked cause of resistance to change in organizations.
Maurer’s 3 Levels of Resistance to Change are: I don’t get it, I don’t like it, and I don’t like you. That’s right — people may not resist the change itself, but rather the person making it. Of course, “you” does not always refer to the change-maker specifically. It could also be someone the change-maker represents, such as corporate headquarters or a faceless CEO.
2. Emotional responses
Changing the status quo is difficult, and some people may have emotional reactions to anything that disrupts their routine. This is a natural and inevitable response. Brushing it off will only lead to stronger resistance.
Use change management models that focus on emotional reactions to change, such as the Kübler-Ross Change Curve or Bridges Transition Model, to mitigate this common cause of resistance to change. Both models recognize that change can lead to feelings of loss and grief. As such, change-makers must be prepared to manage these emotions and move people towards acceptance of the change.
Start by coaching change leaders to approach resistance to change with empathy, acknowledging that people may have a wide range of emotional reactions. Some may even skip steps in the Kübler-Ross Change Curve, slide back into old habits, or have negative reactions multiple times throughout the transition.
To manage these reactions, change leaders should clearly explain the need for change while also listening attentively to the feedback from those affected by it. People want to feel heard. Make it clear that their opinions are valuable to the change process.
Change leaders should also check in frequently to provide support, gather additional feedback, and nudge people towards change acceptance and adoption.
3. Fear of failure
People won’t support a change if they’re not confident in their abilities to adapt to it. When people feel threatened by their shortcomings (real or imagined), they protect themselves from failure by resisting the change.
The ADKAR Model has two goals that address the fear of failure: knowledge and ability.
Knowledge is all about effective training. The goal is to give people the tools they need to facilitate the change, including those needed to handle transitions.
Take technological change for example – if your company is integrating a new software system, employees should know how to move existing information into it, as well as how to make the most of the new system in the future.
Ability is more about self-confidence. After training, people need to feel comfortable applying the knowledge they have acquired. Give employees enough hands-on experience to develop and test their new skills before fully launching the change.
4. Poor communication
The key to excellent change management communication is to create an active conversation. When you talk at people as opposed to with people, you’re bound to get pushback and resistance to change.
Start by making a change communication plan. Before you initiate change, you should have several communication actions planned, such as the announcement of the change, small group discussions, one-on-one meetings, and methods for gathering feedback.
When talking with employees about change, answer the questions, “What’s in it for me?” (WIIFM) and “What does it mean to me?” (WDIMTM). When you address individual concerns, you increase their engagement. People want to know how the change will impact them specifically and what they will need to do to implement and solidify the change.
Furthermore, providing continuous motivation throughout the change process is essential. Kotter’s 8-Step Change Theory highlights the importance of focusing on short-term wins in step six of the eight-step change process. When employees are recognized for their efforts, it builds their enthusiasm and desire to support the change
5. Unrealistic timelines
Find a balance between creating a sense of urgency and allowing time to transition. Don’t force change too quickly – when you push too hard for a change to happen, it’s easy to get tunnel vision and neglect important elements of your change plan.
Start with a change implementation timeline. Map out every action and set deadlines so you have a general idea of how long the entire transformation will take. Often, designing the path between the current state and change adoption helps you identify additional steps needed to facilitate the transition.
Of course, you shouldn’t be afraid to make adjustments. If your team needs more time to understand the change or would benefit from additional training, make it happen.

7 Tips to Overcome Resistance to Change
Here are a few of the best strategies to overcome change resistance in your organization.
1. Show value through education and training
To avoid change resistance, provide proof that a new process, tool, or change will greatly benefit your employees. Prioritize educating your teams on how this new change will directly make their lives better and improve their day-to-day, and provide ongoing training to ensure they feel confident and comfortable navigating the new change.
2. Collect employee input prior to change
Many times, employees resist change because they believe their opinion doesn’t matter and wouldn’t impact the decision to make an organizational change. Run surveys with your team on how they feel about the change and how they would make the process easier.
3. Come to an agreement with your employees
Never make a decision without consulting those on the front lines – your employees. After consulting with your team, come to an agreement on the timeline and overall plan for managing and implementing a new change.
4. Include employees in the change management plan
Employees feel they are taken seriously and their opinion matters when they’re included in processes. Be sure to add key members of your team into the change management and implementation process so they feel ownership of the project.
5. Support your employees during organizational transformation
Don’t leave your employees out on an island – support your team members with resources, change management tools, knowledge bases, and training on the new process or tool you’re implementing. This will help your employees find value in a new system quickly, causing them to build trust with you when it
6. Communicate clearly and frequently
Letting employees know about changes to the status quo as soon as possible helps to build a bridge between employees and management.
Share any information you have with employees that you are able to share. If you’re not sure about an answer or simply cannot provide an answer, it’s okay to say something like, “I’ll look into that and follow up with you” or, “I’ll share that information with you as soon as I have it.” The more open and honest your communication with them, the less likely they are to speculate and spiral.
7. Measure the performance of your organizational change
Measurement is a key factor in the change process because it allows organizations to understand how the implementation influences overall business performance. If something doesn’t go as planned, there’s an opportunity to change it or include it in the next phase of the change implementation.

The main reason for the failure of many change initiatives can be found as the resistance to change. Resistance to change is costly and time consuming into the change process which means long or short delays in any process of change that are difficult to anticipate but must be taken into consideration. Resistance has also been considered as a source of information, being useful in learning how to develop a more successful change process. Undoubtedly, resistance to change is a key topic in change management and should be seriously considered to help the organization to achieve the advantages of the transformation.
Resistance to change is an ongoing problem. At both the individual and the organizational levels, resistance to change impairs concerted efforts to improve performance. Many corporate change efforts have been initiated at tremendous cost only to be halted by resistance among the organization’s employees. Organizations as a whole also manifest behavior similar to that of individuals when faced with the need to change.
The relationship between individual and organizational resistance to change is important. An organization is a complex system of relationships between people, leaders, technologies, and work processes. From this interaction emerge organizational behavior, culture, and performance.
These emergent properties and behaviors are tightly linked in two directions to the lower-level interactions. Organizational resistance to change is an emergent property, and individual resistance to change can give rise to organizational resistance. A self-reinforcing loop of increasing resistance can develop as individuals create an environment in which resistance to change is the norm. That environment in turn encourages increased resistance to change among individual employees. The self-reinforcing nature of this loop can be tremendously powerful, defeating repeated attempts to break out of it.
Resistance to change is defined as a behavior, which is intended to protect an individual from the effects of real or imagined change. Resistance to change is an inevitable response to any major change. Individuals naturally rush to defend the status quo if they feel that their security and status are threatened. Resistance to change is a key topic in change management and should be seriously considered to help the organizations to achieve the advantages of the transformation. Resistance to change is simply a very effective, very powerful and a very useful survival mechanism in organizations.
These are some of those factors that often lead employees and top management resist changing.
- Ambiguity concerning alteration: Organization members may have a psychological resistance to change because they seek to avoid uncertainty. Past ways of doing things are well known and predictable, and the unwillingness to give up familiar tasks or relationship also cause resistance.
- Apprehension for mysterious: People become anxious when they exchange the old and familiar for something new and uncertain .A lack of information and understanding often leaves a vacuum which is filled by rumors, speculation and uncertainty.
- Disruption of Routine: Projected changes that disturb habitual routines or patterns are likely to encounter resistance because a person’s behavior is governed largely by habits and routine when a person successfully copes with a situation, he or she will usually continue to operate in a similar manner. The known is preferred and this is especially true when the established behavior has resulted in past successes.
- Loss of Existing Benefits: When the change causes employees to feel pressured, they may interpret change as a loss of individual security. There may be a emotional loss a loss of prior “comfort zone”.
- Threat to Position Power: As the title implies, any change that causes a manager to lose face will always be resisted. Changes that threaten to lower the status or prestige of the individual or group will probably meet resistance.
- Threat to Security: Change sometimes results in a potential disadvantage to an individual employee or group, and people tend to resist changes that threaten the security of their environment. There may be concerns for the vested interests such as the loss of job, reduced promotional potential, change in career opportunities, reduction in wages etc.
- Redistribution of Power: A major factor in resistance to innovation is that reorganization invariably implies a redistribution of power and influence. Individuals or groups who perceive that a change will lessen their degree of influence will strongly resist such changes.
- Disturb existing social networks: Generally technical changes are more readily accepted When do not disturb existing social networks. Friendships, social cliques, or informal teams may be threatened by changes.
- Resistance to the new Technology: They perceive that new technology will add up to more of unwanted work and will contribute to increased responsibility. They oppose the new processes because they feel that the change will not solve their problems, which they are experiencing.
- Organization’s past performance: The past performance of the change project impacts the perception of employees for the current change project, if the past change project had been introduced and was being failed. This may force them to oppose change.
- Lack of skill and experience: Managers are fearful about the skills, knowledge and responsibilities, which will be placed on them by the new business processes and technologies. They are also concerned about the experience to effectively manage their employee’s resistance. And they feel uncomfortable with their role in coping with the change.
- Disagreement with the new way: When the pace seems too excessive and fast, most people resist. And they conclude that the solution is not the best way for fixing the prevailing problems. So they disagree specifically with the change.
- Overload of tasks: At times they even put change in terms of an additional burden. They find the change initiative as an extra work and a resource strain. Along with the duty of implementing change they are also expected to perform their daily activities and avoid bringing about changes.
The resistance to change if ignored can have detrimental effects on the working of an organization .It is required to be fully reduced or eliminated on an individual levels as people can feign agreement to change and obtain control of change process. This would allow various mechanisms of sabotage to be employed from the inside the organizations such as they can mislead the organization members to completely stall or halt the change process.
Resistance to change can also set the managers against each other, as difference of opinions may exist. This will also lead to rumors and misinformation to be spread out deliberately for setting up a conflict within the organization. This can lead to strikes and no-cooperation movements within the organization which will seriously obstruct company’s plans and might prove to be the lot of production and time loss for the organization. Resistance to change can led to slowing up of processes as the people not conforming the change will deliberately delay the process by requesting further information. All such actions lead to increase in the overall costs to the organization.
Resistance to change may also put the reputation of the organization at stake as those opposing the change can go to media and give statements which may not be good for company’s image in the market.
There are some people living in a conservative world, for them change is often believed as a dangerous threat. For some of course change can be a positive thing however since most of negative cases were widely exposed more than the positive side, more people would normally be happy if changes do not take place. Change can be interpreted as promotion and demotion — which leaves many feel insecure with their future employment. They are worry about how they may have to do their work in different ways or their current “salary will be subject to change”. Admittedly, behind all the change process there are organisations needs for make more profits in any possible way which often leads to job-cutting and restructuring. In business world everything is a competition. Everyone within organisation must compete both internally and externally to keep their existing job or to get a better one.
Managers most of the time view resistance negatively and employees resisting to change are considered disobedient but often resistance may play a positive and useful role in any change process. Not all interventions are appropriate as implemented, the organization might be changing the wrong thing or doing it wrong. Just as conflict can sometimes be used constructively for change, legitimate resistance might bring about additional organizational change.
There are many idealist managers who believe that change process that occurs with only minimal resistance must have been a good change that was managed well. This understanding is an immature perspective which leaves resistance in the negative side of the change process.
All change involves loss. In many cases, change requires at the minimum that individuals give up familiar routines. In some cases, the loss is substantial, affecting position, power, networks of friends and colleagues, and such. In all these situations, rituals of transition can be crucial in assisting people to grieve and let go of the old and move on to the new.
The strategies for overcoming the barriers to change are quite diverse and touch on every aspect of the organization. No organization can begin using all the strategies at the same time or even in a short period of time. A better approach is to focus on one or two until they become part of the normal way of operating, i.e., until they become engrained in people’s habits. Only then is it time to introduce another strategy. In this way, over time, the organization gradually improves its abilities to learn rapidly, to adapt to new conditions, and to embrace change.
