Кабуто Якуши (яп. 薬師カブト, Якуши Кабуто) — бывший нукэнин. Сирота, воспитанный в Детском доме Конохи, бывший шпион и правая рука Орочимару. Кабуто сдавал экзамен на Чуунина семь раз, собирая в ходе экзаменов полезную для Деревни Звука информацию. Каждый раз он доходил до заключительных раундов, но выбывал, чтобы позже вновь принять участие и собрать больше данных для своего хозяина. Он был в команде с ещё двумя шпионами Орочимару — Ёрой Акадо и Мисуми Цуруги. Внешность

У Кабуто чёрные глаза, пепельные волосы, собранные в хвост, и круглые очки. Выражение лица Кабуто очень трудно прочесть. Будучи ассистентом Орочимару, он надевал лиловую рубашку и того же цвета брюки, под рубашку — белую майку. Также он носил перчатки лилового цвета (во второй части снимает их), обычные сандалии Ниндзя и протектор Отогакуре.

После того как Орочимару проиграл Саске, Кабуто интегрирует оставшиеся клетки своего хозяина в своё тело, чтобы стать сильнее и перестать быть инструментом для других. Личность

Кабуто, по его собственным словам, интроверт. Он скрытен и не любит быть в центре внимания. Может вести себя довольно открыто и уверенно, особенно когда хочет вызвать чьё-то доверие. Он вежлив с теми, кто, по его мнению, этого заслуживает, относится к ним с почтением и наказывает тех, кто этого почтения не выказывает.

Множество противоречий в характере Кабуто — результат его долгой шпионской деятельности. Большую часть своей жизнь он провёл, меняя личности и добывая информацию, работая на различные организации. Кабуто страдает от глубокого кризиса самоидентификации. Из-за травмы головы, которую он перенёс в раннем возрасте, он не знает ничего о своём прошлом и своих родителях, и с самого детства он пытается найти себя. Но, несмотря на все заявления о своём превосходстве, он всё ещё относится к Орочимару с большим почтением и, говоря о нём, использует уважительный суффикс «-сама». Когда во время битвы против Итачи и Саске Кабуто начинает видеть просчёты в своих планах, его представления о своём совершенстве рушатся и он отчаянно пытается удержать их. Итачи пытается объяснить Кабуто, в чём заключаются его ошибки, но только будучи пойманным в Изанами Кабуто прислушивается к его словам. Кабуто осознаёт, что в попытке создать некое «Я» он лишь отдалялся от настоящего себя. Освободившись от своих ложных самоопределений, он понимает, что он — приёмный сын Ноно Якуши и его дом — приют, где были люди, уважавшие его и нуждавшиеся в нём.

Кабуто признателен Итачи за то, что тот помог ему понять, кто он есть и где его место. Впоследствии он выражает свою благодарность, спасая Саске. После войны Кабуто возвращается в свой приют, где и остаётся, чтобы заботиться о сиротах.

Прошлое

Когда-то давно произошло сражение между Деревней Листа и неизвестными людьми. Маленький ребенок врага был найден Ниндзя-Медиком из Конохи на окраинах разрушенного в ходе битвы города. Вследствие травмы головы у него была амнезия и он не помнил ни своего имени, ни прошлого. Но ниндзя-медик сжалилась над ним и, залечив его раны, отвела в детский дом. Она дала ему имя Кабуто, что означает «шлем» и подарила очки, так как у мальчика было плохое зрение. Ирьёнин же преподавала ему медицинское дзюцу — эту версию придумал Орочимару, чтобы в своих целях использовать Кабуто как шпиона.

На самом же деле Кабуто подобрала Ноно Якуши — настоятельница приюта для сирот. Позже другие члены приюта признают Кабуто и поражаются его интеллектуальным способностям. Ноно являлась бывшим шпионом корня Данзо и на этом поприще была безупречна. Кабуто называет эту женщину своей матерью и хочет во что бы то ни стало защитить её. Кабуто прекрасно овладел медицинскими техниками и помогал матери лечить шиноби Листа. Когда он спрашивает мать, зачем они это делают, та отвечает: ради того, чтобы добыть средства на содержание приюта. Однажды приют посещает Данзо в сопровождении Орочимару и Тацумы из Клана Абураме. Кабуто подслушивает разговор: Данзо, зная о трудном положении приюта, угрожает полностью прекратить финансирование из Конохи, если ему в Корень не отдадут одного из сирот. Набравшись смелости, Кабуто выступает добровольцем, несмотря на протесты других детей и Ноно. Корень сделал из Кабуто обученного шпиона, и его посылали добывать информацию в разные деревни. Но, как позже выяснилось, его мать тоже заставили шпионить. Оба они были слишком опытны и слишком много знали, поэтому Корень АНБУ решил устранить их, натравив друг на друга. Матери Кабуто в течение многих лет намеренно посылали фотографии разных людей, называя их Якуши Кабуто. В конце концов на фото уже был совсем другой человек. Такую, которую будет волен построить, как сам захочет. Кабуто стал правой рукой Орочимару. Орочимару ценил его за глубокие познания в области медицинских техник, за его ум и способности к шпионажу.

Часть I

Экзамены на Чуунина

Во время сдачи своего последнего экзамена на Чуунина, Кабуто получает доверие Команды 7 и даже показывает им свои информационные карты различных ниндзя. Когда команды входят в Лес Смерти для сдачи второй части экзамена, Кабуто приходит как раз вовремя, не давая Наруто открыть свиток который может дисквалифицировать его из соревнования.

Кабуто рисует план, узнав у Орочимару о похищении Саске. Орочимару ответил Кабуто, что единственный способ помешать ему состоит в том, чтобы убить Саске. Позже Кабуто отправился в больницу, убив АНБУ, охраняющих Саске, и очевидно убил бы Саске, если бы не вмешался Какаши. Он отчитал Кабуто за его высокомерие. Какаши попытался схватить Кабуто, но молодой человек упал мертвым, в то время как один из трупов Анбу поднялся, чтобы бежать. Один из двойников Какаши остановил бы его, но увидел как другой АНБУ выпрыгнул через окно. Медицинские навыки Кабуто и обман удивили даже Какаши. Кабуто появляется снова, убивая другого АНБУ перед началом финала экзамена на Чуунина. Используя маскировку он прошел на арену. Там он излечил Хинату раненую в битве с Неджи, это еще раз вызывает сомнение в его намерениях. Позже, во время сражения Гаары с Саске, Кабуто применил Техника Храма Нирваны, усыпив многих людей на стадионе, и сигнализируя началу вторжения в деревню Листа.

Поиски Цунаде

Во время неудавшегося вторжения Орочимару в Коноху его руки оказываются запечатаны Третьим Хокаге. Кабуто пытается исцелить их, и, когда это не сработало, он предоставляет Орочимару множество лекарств от боли, но они также неэффективны. Имея несколько других доступных возможностей, Орочимару говорит Кабуто, где находится Цунаде, одна из его соратников Саннинов. Кабуто отправляется в кварталы Танзаку, и они идут на встречу с ней. Найдя ее, Орочимару предлагает возродить ее брата и любовника в обмен на то, чтобы она исцелила его руки. Это предложение провоцирует спутницу Цунаде, Шизуне и она атакует его с помощью подготовленного выстрела игл, который блокирует Кабуто. Он посылает Четверку Звука, чтобы завербовать Саске, и Кабуто присматривает за ним, пока он ждет. Возвращение Четверки Звука в конечном итоге занимает слишком много времени, и Кабуто берет на себя задачу, найти другое тело: он выпускает своих заключенных, сражающихся друг с другом на смерть, а Орочимару берет тело победителя Генъюумару. В то время, как Орочимару делает это, Кабуто разговаривает с Кимимаро, напоминая ему, что нынешнее затруднительное положение Орочимару является его виной с тех пор, как он заболел, что делает его непригодным в качестве нового тела Орочимару. Кабуто появляется на Мосту Тенчи для встречи с Сасори. Сакура узнала от умирающего Сасори, что последний должен встретиться там со своим шпионом у Орочимару, которым и оказался Кабуто. Команда Какаши, но с заменами (Ямато вместо раненого Какаши, Сай — вместо ушедшего Саске) был послан перехватить шпиона. Ямато маскируется под Сасори, но разговор с Кабуто не клеится, к тому же вскоре на мосту появляется Орочимар., Тогда из засады выскакивают Сакура, Сай и Наруто по команде Ямато. Последний, придя в ярость после упоминания Орочимару о Саске, использует силу Кьюби для сражения с Саннином и становится практически невменяем в этой форме. Кабуто же остается лишь зрителем в этой схватке, хоть и решает вылечить Сакуру от ранения, полученного от неконтролируемого Наруто, в шутку сказав, что за эту услугу шиноби Конохи должны убить кого-нибудь из Акацуки. Позже он и Орочимару покидают поле боя, прихватив с собой Сая, который представился посланцем Данзо. Но Наруто и товарищи проследили за ними до их убежища и даже на некоторое время пленяют Кабуто. Однако Саске, недовольный нежелательной встречей с бывшими членами команды, своими силами разрушает убежище, а потом после короткого сражения исчезает вместе с Орочимару и освободившимся Кабуто.

Клетки Орочимару дали Кабуто множество новых способностей и сделали его очень сильным шиноби, но взамен начали пытаться поглотить его. Кабуто был нанят Дисонасу, чтобы помочь получить ему доступ к Ама но Хоко. Он нападает на деревню Тоника с перевоплощенными пешками и убивает большинство жителей деревни, готовясь к пробуждению Ама но Хоко, что вскоре привлекает внимание Команды 7.

Услышав это, Тоби почти начинает атаковать, но оказывается заблокирован пятью гробами, предусмотрительно поставленными здесь Якуши. Так как ее чакра связана с чакрой Орочимару, oн ее не убивает, что увеличивает недоверие Тоби. С раннего детства Кабуто обладал талантом к искусствам шиноби, что и привлекло внимание Орочимару после встречи с ним. Орочимару также изучил послужной список Кабуто, и, в конечном итоге, взял его себе в помощники. Кабуто был правой рукой Орочимару. Модификация тела

Экзамен на звание Чунин (中忍選抜試験, «Chūnin Senbatsu Shiken», «Выборный экзамен на Чунина») — мероприятие международного масштаба, в котором принимают участие Генины из различных Какурезато, которым позволяют пройти испытания для получения звания Чунин (中忍, «средний ниндзя»).

В этом экзамене, который начинается 1. июля принимают участие 30 Генинов из Сунагакуре, 21 из Амегакуре, шесть из Кусагакуре, шесть из Такигакуре, 87 из Конохагакуре и три из Отогакуре. Тем самым в экзамене участвуют всего 153 Генина.^[1]

Первый этап — письменный экзамен

Проктор — Морино Ибики

На первом письменном этапе экзамена, каждый кандидат получает лист с девятью вопросами. Десятый вопрос задается в устной форме лишь в конце первого этапа. На выполнение письменного теста у Генинна есть ровно час. Каждый кандидат, получают по одному балу за каждый правильный ответ. За каждый неправильный или пропущенный вопрос при проверки теста ставится точка. Если ни один член команды не получает ни одного балла, то всю команду дисквалифицируют. Если это не так, то все полученные командные баллы складываются в конце экзамена (Максимум 30), таким образом тест рассчитан на всю команду.

Среди участников, также находятся обманщики и мошенники, которых дисквалифицируют вместе со своими товарищами по команде, если кто-то из них попробует списать пять раз. На самом деле это хитроумный трюк. Истинной целью этого этапа, проверить учеников как профессиональных разведчиков, которые должны научиться добывать информацию так, чтобы их не поймали. У них не бывает другого выхода как списать тест, так как вопросы слишком трудные для обычных Генинов. Из-за этого, к участникам внедряют двух Чунинов, замаскированных под Генинов, которые заранее знают ответы на все вопросы.

После окончания письменного экзамена, кандидаты прекращают отвечать на вопросы. После этого экзаменатор этого этапа Морино Ибики задает десятый вопрос кандидатам. Он также добавляет, что даже если кандидаты ответили на все девять письменных вопросов, но хотя бы один их их команды не смог правильно ответить на десятый вопрос, то сумма очков команды становится равна нулю. Если хотя бы один член команды не может ответить на десятый вопрос, то вся команда больше никогда не может сдавать экзамен. Если кандидат не уверен в себе, то он может поднять руку и отказаться, в случае чего вся команда получает право на сдачу экзамена на следующий год.

На самом деле десятый вопрос является еще одним испытанием, потому что все кандидаты, решившиеся ответить на этот вопрос, автоматически получает право на прохождение на второй этап. Таким образом он является чем-то вроде выбора для каждого шиноби.

Кандидат получает право на участие во втором этапе экзамена, после того как каждый участник его команды соглашаются в письменной форме, что они готовы пойти на смерть, ради сдачи экзамена. После этого экзаменатор второго этапа Митараши Анко, раздает каждой команде свиток с канджи небо или земля. Свиток «небо» раздается одной половине участников, а свиток «земля» другой половине. Целью этапа является выживание в полном опасностей лесу, сопровождаемое изъятием второго свитка в бою у другой команды.

Команды должны бороться друг с другом за свитки, таким образом им дается на это всего пять дней. Каждой команде приходится искать команду, с другим видом свитка, чтобы заполучить его. Однако если у другой команды находится такой же свиток как у них, то сражения не случается.

Открытие свитков запрещено, до прибытия в башню с обоими свитками. В противном случает участники будут наказаны и дисквалифицированы. Если хотя бы один член команды умрет или не сможет продолжать испытание, то это считается автоматической дисквалификацией всей группы. После прибытия в башню, имея оба вида свитка, члены команда должны раскрыть их. После раскрытия, из свитков появляется Чунин и сообщает команде о проходе в следующий тур.

Третий этап — Финальные бои

Если оба прошлых этапов проходит большое количество команд, то проводятся отборочные поединки. Кандидат, прошедшие их, принимают участие в финальном этапе лишь через некоторое время. Финальный этап начинается лишь, после уменьшения количества участников. Генины, которые еще не сражаются или наоборот закончили свой поединок, наблюдают за остальными поединками с балкона, находящимся над ареной со своими командирами. В этом экзамене, каждый член команды сражается за себя, то есть если один из членов команды проигрывает свой поединок, а другие два побеждают, они все равно проходят в финальный раунд. В случае ничьи, оба противника проигрывают. Экзаменатор этого этапа Гекко Хаяте.

Через месяц, после отборочных поединков наступает финальный этап экзамена. В нем, также как и в отборочных поединках, кандидаты должны сражаться друг с другом. I doubt Kabuto even finished the academy in the other villages, all he had to do was steal/fake a headband and insert his name into the villages files. When teams are made he would get a spot on one. With so many ninjas I doubt any additional detail/background checks would be paid to genin.

On the subject of the chunin exams, it seems they’re held twice a year, since the maximum number of ninjas that advance to chunin would be 8 (time constraints limit the size of the matches to 8 participants from what we saw), that means there’s only 16 chunins per year between all the villages. If each ninja that becomes a chunin remains active until 70 and becomes a chunin at 15, that would mean there’s 880 chunins between the 5 villages at any given time so there’s somewhere around 15,000 genin per village. I’m sure it would be incredibly easy to sneak in and just act like an unremarkable genin.

The real question about Kabuto is, where does Sasori fit into this backstory?

OR Sasori remembered meeting him in the sand village maybe training him since he was a poisons expert and medical and poison are very closely related and taught him some things, then discovered he was a spy and used him as a double agent

I dont think even the Kage know all the Ninja in their village by name or face. The hardest part was getting in the village. As for the cloths, cloths can be made and so can headbands, he doesn’t have to steal anything.

As for integrating himself, he just has to rend out an apartment and then due to his medical skills he can offer himself on missions since he is not apart of the files. So a team is going out and he would just say «hey want a med-nin to keep you breathing?» When he popped up on a report and a question was raised, he or the team would just say he is a med-nin that saved lives. Its not enough for further investigation. Also him being an Orphan is a good explanation as to why there would be missing records.

Going through the academy also fills out some records as their is probably a form to fill out.

It would be a reasonable expectation that all 5 major countries would have canidates for the chunin exam each time it comes up, seeing as how the weakest major village had 30 and the leaf which was pretty strong prior to Oro’s invasion had 87. There’s no mention of the mist, cloud, or stone in that exam which makes me think they were taking an exam somewhere else at the same time.

If that theory were true, it would double and possibly triple the number of chunin’s between all the villages depending on just how many countries hosted the exams each time.

Even if it were tripled though, the point would still stand that there’s 10,000+ genin in every single village. I would think it would be pretty easy to just slip into the city unnoticed and with a little bit of spy work Kabuto could easily get himself on a mission roster in each village.

The Chūnin Selection Exams (中忍選抜試験, Chūnin Senbatsu Shiken)^[1] are an opportunity for genin to be promoted to chūnin. The exam structure and evaluation processes differ from one exam to the next so that genin cannot come prepared. Villages originally held their own individual exams. Following the Third Shinobi World War, exams that are open to all villages started being held bi-annually,^[2] with villages taking turns for hosting responsibilities. These shared exams improve relations between the villages, present up-and-coming ninja to clients, and create an opportunity for gambling.

Although the exams, specifically the final round matches, are designed for there to be an ultimate «winner», success does not guarantee promotion nor does failure preclude it; if the observing ninja and daimyō feel a genin displays the necessary qualities for a chūnin, that genin will be promoted regardless of how they place in the exams. For this reason it is possible for as many as all of the finalists to pass, or even for none of them to. Being victorious simply expands the participant’s chances of demonstrating their qualities in the next match.

Having too many participants to advance to the next stages seems to be an undesired result, as the examiners tend to run additional preliminaries to reduce the number of finalists.

Konoha-Only

Konohagakure held one of its own Chūnin Exams around the time of the Third Shinobi World War. Genin had to enter as part of a three-man team. The three stages were not held consecutively, allowing participants to recuperate between stages.

Second Stage

Held in the Forest of Death, the second stage consisted of tournament battles between three-man teams. The Third Hokage and the team’s leader monitored the fights remotely. Loss of a match did not necessarily prevent a genin from continuing to the finals.

If a genin is caught cheating five times, they and the rest of their team are disqualified. The goal is also to force the genin to apply critical thinking. In most cases, being caught cheating means instant failure, but the two-point reduction is meant to give them a chance instead of trying again without being caught and make them realise they have to cheat. Getting the correct answer to these nine questions is not ultimately important, as it is possible to pass without answering any of them at all.

Forty-five minutes in to the first stage, genin are given the opportunity to answer the tenth question. They are first warned that, if they answer the question incorrectly, they will not be allowed to take the exams ever again; if they forfeit — which also disqualifies the rest of their team — before hearing the question, they will be allowed to retake the exams another time. Second Stage

Proctored by Anko Mitarashi, the second stage takes place in the Forest of Death. Three-man teams are given either a Heaven Scroll (天の書, Ten no Sho) or an Earth Scroll (地の書, Chi no Sho) before entering the forest. They then have five days for the entire team to reach the building in the centre of the forest with one of each scroll in their possession; how they acquire the other scroll is up to them, by force or by trade being the most common options. Because of the natural hazards of the forest, the absence of services or outside assistance, and the likely conflict with other teams, genin must sign liability waivers before entering to release Konoha from responsibility for any injuries or deaths.

If a team loses their starting scroll they are not automatically disqualified, as they may use the remaining time to acquire another copy of the scroll they’ve lost. By the same extension, acquiring both scrolls does not guarantee completion of the second stage, as they still must reach the centre building in time. As the second stage goes on, teams that have lost their scroll will tend to gather around the building, hoping to prey on on those with both. Alternately, teams that already have both scrolls can linger outside the building, taking scrolls from others to reduce the competition of later stages.

Genin are forbidden from opening either scroll until they have reached the central building. If they follow this instruction, the scroll will summon a higher-ranked ninja to grant them advancement to the next stage. If they do not follow this instruction, the ninja will render them and everyone else in the area unconscious for the duration of the second stage.

The Three Sand Siblings, in particular, have broken the previous record by making it to the tower with both scrolls in 97 minutes.^[8]

Anko herself was surprised that 21 genin made it, even though less than half would make it anyway due to the nature of the test, believing that no more than 3 teams would pass.

Preliminaries

Because too many genin end up passing the second stage, a single round of randomly selected one-on-one matches is held where only the victor will get to continue on. Participants’ advancement to the finals is no longer contingent upon the success of their teammates; it is for this excuse that Kabuto Yakushi forfeits before the preliminaries start. Matches are refereed by Hayate Gekkō while others are free to observe. Genin are encouraged to watch each others’ fights carefully to help them prepare for fighting each other in the finals; indeed, after the preliminaries are finished the finalists are told who they will fight in the first round so they can plan accordingly.

Finals

The finals are held a month after the completion of the preliminaries so that finalists have a chance to recuperate and prepare. This also allows news of the matchups to get around and attract greater publicity for the event. The finals consist of one-on-one tournament battles refereed by Genma Shiranui (originally planned to be reffed by Hayate Gekkō before his death).

Shikamaru Nara was originally scheduled to fight Dosu Kinuta in the first round of the finals, and the victor of that match would then fight Temari. However, Dosu is killed before the finals take place, so Shikamaru and Temari are matched from the beginning. Kankurō surrendered before his match with Shino Aburame began in order to preserve his weapon’s secrets for the planned coup. The finals themselves are interrupted by and cancelled because of the Konoha Crush. Shikamaru, though he forfeits his match, is ultimately the only participant to be promoted to chūnin by default.

Konoha–Suna Joint

In the anime, Konohagakure and Sunagakure hold a joint Chūnin Exam during the gap in time between Part I and Part II. Although they invite all the other respective villages to participate, only Takigakure, Kusagakure and Amegakure accept. The participating genin must enter as part of a three-man team. Although publicly meant to symbolise the growing alliance between Konoha and Suna, the exams are actually held to help restore Konohagakure’s reputation after the events of the last exams being interrupted. A second hidden goal for these exams was to draw out Akatsuki, with the Fifth Kazekage (a jinchūriki) being the bait.

First Stage

Proctored by Shikamaru Nara, the first stage is a written test that takes place in Konoha. Members from each team are split into in one of three rooms while taking the test. The goal for this test is to see how well the team-mates know each other, as each member of a team must answer one of three questions and depending on the question picked will decide whether the team passes or fails. Ultimately, the team members have to achieve a combined score of 100 points.^[12]

Along with the three question choice test, there is a bonus question that must be answered unanimously by each team which asks what member of their respective team would be chosen to be a decoy and the one picked will be disqualified. This happens to be a trick question as all members of a team must be present in order to be qualified for the second round.^[11] Communication between team-mates is allowed.

Second Stage

Proctored by Temari, the second stage takes place in Suna’s Demon Desert. Teams are given either a Heaven Scroll or an Earth Scroll before entering the desert. They then have three days for the entire team to reach the building in the centre of the desert with one of each scroll in their possession. Because of the risks involved with this second stage, genin must sign liability waivers before entering.^[13]

Because of attacks on the Kazekage and one of the exam’s participants, the exams are cancelled at the end of the second stage. Performance reports on all participants, including those who did not acquire the necessary scrolls, are instead sent back to their respective village, with the choice to promote them left up to their village’s leader.^[14] Known promotions are:

Fifteen years after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the villages of the Five Great Shinobi Countries for the first time co-sponsor the year’s Chūnin Exams, which is held in Konohagakure. In addition to genin of the five sponsoring villages, genin from Amegakure and Kusagakure are also seen. The participating genin must enter as part of a three-man team. 48 shinobi, divided into 16 teams participated in the Exams.

Although most ninja tools are permitted, the Seventh Hokage forbids the usage of the Kote, a recent invention that enables anyone to use any ninjutsu without training or chakra. As the Hokage explains, the Kote defeats the exams’ purpose of nurturing the shinobi arts.

First Stage

Proctored by Sai Yamanaka and designed by Shikamaru Nara, the first stage is held at Exam Venue B and is initially presented as a simple true or false question. All teams are given the same question regarding the fifth volume of a book on shinobi strategies and, as a team, are instructed to stand next to a flag representing what they believe the correct answer to be. Once all teams gather at their selected answer, they are dropped into a pit because, in truth, there is no fifth volume of that book and therefore no correct answer. Shortly before being dropped, the genin are warned that anyone who «turns black» will fail.

The actual objective of the exam is for genin, once dropped into the pit, to not get any of the ink that pools at the bottom of each pit on themselves. By not falling in the ink, genin demonstrate quick thinking and a willingness to persevere despite apparent failure, thus allowing them to continue to the second stage.

In the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime, Exam Venue B is preceded by Exam Venue A. Exam Venue A serves as a place where all participating genin are told by Sai that the first exam will start in another venue which involves a true or false question and to enter the next exam venue, each team would have to go through a series of traps and make it to the next venue within the allotted time limit or else they fail and are not allowed to take the exam. The participants are expected to leave while Sai is still explaining the rules, having already started the timer, and Tenten oversees the activation of traps along the way, increasing their difficulty as deemed necessary.

Second Stage

Eight teams made it to this round. Proctored by Tenten with assistance from Shino Aburame, the second stage is held three days after the first. Teams are paired against each other in a game of capture the flag. Teams must simultaneously defend their own flag and capture the opposing team’s flag in order to pass to the final rounds. The movie’s novelisation adds that teams are not allowed to kill opponents, partly for humane reasons, but also in order to test genin’s ability to keep and benefit from prisoners.

Finals

Four teams passed the previous round and made it into the finals. The finals are tournament matches held in a stadium, observed by the five Kage and any other interested parties. Refereed by Rock Lee, the first two rounds are one-on-one matches and the third round is a three-way match between the remaining finalists.

Boruto Uzumaki is caught using the Kote during his second match (the finals in the anime) and for that reason he is disqualified by the Hokage. The Hokage is immediately afterwards attacked by Kinshiki and Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki and the stadium is destroyed in the ensuing battle, thus forcing the tournament’s cancellation. In the novelisation, the exams continued after Momoshiki’s death.

Konoha Re-Examination

In the anime, following Isshiki’s attack, Naruto decides to reorganise the exam that was interrupted by Momoshiki’s attack. The exam is also reorganised in other villages, but are held separately.

First Round

A written exam. The genin are expected to cheat for answers without being caught, and they must achieve an average of 70 points per team member. Teams 5, 7, 9, 10, 15, 22, 25, 31, and 40 passed and advanced to the next round.

Second Round

Participants must rescue proctors in the role of injured allies from the Forest of Death, while avoiding traps, wildlife, and proctors in the role of enemy shinobi within a 45 minute time limit. Instead of being graded as a team, each participant is evaluated individually. Passing or failing also depends on the performance during the entirety of the exam, not just the completion of the exam.

Referenced Exams

Although only four Chūnin Exams have been depicted in the series, many others have been referenced:

• Manabu Akado has taken and failed the exams on seventeen prior occasions.
• The Third Hokage remembers Kabuto Yakushi dropping out before the finals during a previous exam. Kabuto’s records state he has failed five other times as well.
• In the anime, Ibiki Morino proctored the first stage of the exams before. Each time he changed the tenth question, such as giving the choice of either quitting and having the whole squad fail or continuing and having the lowest scoring member of the squad be forced to remain a genin forever (solution is to quit, rather than sacrifice squad members for personal gain).
• In the anime, Idate Morino was failed during the first exam by Ibiki, and was asked by him in private to stop attempting to be a ninja.^[15]
• Shikamaru Nara is in the planning stages for another Chūnin Exam at the start of Part II, the obligations of which prevent him from participating in the Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission.

Trivia

• As the exams are an opportunity for gambling, observers who placed a wager may tend to sabotage the opposing genin participant for their own benefit, as two chūnin (Midori and Shiba) were sent to stop Gaara from competing at all against Sasuke Uchiha, though the two were brutally killed instead.
• In Find the Four-Leaf Red Clover!, Kakashi says that genin who went to and returned from Akagahara were accepted as chūnin.
• In Chūnin Exam on Fire! Naruto vs. Konohamaru!, use of senjutsu is against the rules as it would give Naruto Uzumaki an unfair advantage. Indeed, Naruto, who was not listening when this was explained, was immediately disqualified when he used senjutsu.

References and Notes

The Chūnin Selection Exams (中忍選抜試験, Chūnin Senbatsu Shiken)^[1] are an opportunity for genin to be promoted to chūnin. The exam structure and evaluation processes differ from one exam to the next so that genin cannot come prepared. Villages originally held their own individual exams. Following the Third Shinobi World War, exams that are open to all villages started being held bi-annually,^[2] with villages taking turns for hosting responsibilities. These shared exams improve relations between the villages, present up-and-coming ninja to clients, and create an opportunity for gambling.

Although the exams, specifically the final round matches, are designed for there to be an ultimate «winner», success does not guarantee promotion nor does failure preclude it; if the observing ninja and daimyō feel a genin displays the necessary qualities for a chūnin, that genin will be promoted regardless of how they place in the exams. For this reason it is possible for as many as all of the finalists to pass, or even for none of them to. Being victorious simply expands the participant’s chances of demonstrating their qualities in the next match.

Having too many participants to advance to the next stages seems to be an undesired result, as the examiners tend to run additional preliminaries to reduce the number of finalists.

Konohagakure held one of its own Chūnin Exams around the time of the Third Shinobi World War. Genin had to enter as part of a three-man team. The three stages were not held consecutively, allowing participants to recuperate between stages.

Second Stage

Held in the Forest of Death, the second stage consisted of tournament battles between three-man teams. The Third Hokage and the team’s leader monitored the fights remotely. Loss of a match did not necessarily prevent a genin from continuing to the finals.

Genin are forbidden from opening either scroll until they have reached the central building. If they follow this instruction, the scroll will summon a higher-ranked ninja to grant them advancement to the next stage. If they do not follow this instruction, the ninja will render them and everyone else in the area unconscious for the duration of the second stage.

The Three Sand Siblings, in particular, have broken the previous record by making it to the tower with both scrolls in 97 minutes.^[8]

Anko herself was surprised that 21 genin made it, even though less than half would make it anyway due to the nature of the test, believing that no more than 3 teams would pass.

Preliminaries

Because too many genin end up passing the second stage, a single round of randomly selected one-on-one matches is held where only the victor will get to continue on. Participants’ advancement to the finals is no longer contingent upon the success of their teammates; it is for this excuse that Kabuto Yakushi forfeits before the preliminaries start. Matches are refereed by Hayate Gekkō while others are free to observe. Genin are encouraged to watch each others’ fights carefully to help them prepare for fighting each other in the finals; indeed, after the preliminaries are finished the finalists are told who they will fight in the first round so they can plan accordingly.

Finals

The finals are held a month after the completion of the preliminaries so that finalists have a chance to recuperate and prepare. This also allows news of the matchups to get around and attract greater publicity for the event. The finals consist of one-on-one tournament battles refereed by Genma Shiranui (originally planned to be reffed by Hayate Gekkō before his death).

Shikamaru Nara was originally scheduled to fight Dosu Kinuta in the first round of the finals, and the victor of that match would then fight Temari. However, Dosu is killed before the finals take place, so Shikamaru and Temari are matched from the beginning. Kankurō surrendered before his match with Shino Aburame began in order to preserve his weapon’s secrets for the planned coup. The finals themselves are interrupted by and cancelled because of the Konoha Crush. Shikamaru, though he forfeits his match, is ultimately the only participant to be promoted to chūnin by default.

Konoha–Suna Joint

In the anime, Konohagakure and Sunagakure hold a joint Chūnin Exam during the gap in time between Part I and Part II. Although they invite all the other respective villages to participate, only Takigakure, Kusagakure and Amegakure accept. The participating genin must enter as part of a three-man team. Although publicly meant to symbolise the growing alliance between Konoha and Suna, the exams are actually held to help restore Konohagakure’s reputation after the events of the last exams being interrupted. A second hidden goal for these exams was to draw out Akatsuki, with the Fifth Kazekage (a jinchūriki) being the bait.

First Stage

Proctored by Shikamaru Nara, the first stage is a written test that takes place in Konoha. Members from each team are split into in one of three rooms while taking the test. The goal for this test is to see how well the team-mates know each other, as each member of a team must answer one of three questions and depending on the question picked will decide whether the team passes or fails. Ultimately, the team members have to achieve a combined score of 100 points.^[12]

Along with the three question choice test, there is a bonus question that must be answered unanimously by each team which asks what member of their respective team would be chosen to be a decoy and the one picked will be disqualified. This happens to be a trick question as all members of a team must be present in order to be qualified for the second round.^[11] Communication between team-mates is allowed.

Second Stage

Proctored by Temari, the second stage takes place in Suna’s Demon Desert. Teams are given either a Heaven Scroll or an Earth Scroll before entering the desert. They then have three days for the entire team to reach the building in the centre of the desert with one of each scroll in their possession. Because of the risks involved with this second stage, genin must sign liability waivers before entering.^[13]

Because of attacks on the Kazekage and one of the exam’s participants, the exams are cancelled at the end of the second stage. Performance reports on all participants, including those who did not acquire the necessary scrolls, are instead sent back to their respective village, with the choice to promote them left up to their village’s leader.^[14] Known promotions are:

Fifteen years after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the villages of the Five Great Shinobi Countries for the first time co-sponsor the year’s Chūnin Exams, which is held in Konohagakure. In addition to genin of the five sponsoring villages, genin from Amegakure and Kusagakure are also seen. The participating genin must enter as part of a three-man team. 48 shinobi, divided into 16 teams participated in the Exams.

Although most ninja tools are permitted, the Seventh Hokage forbids the usage of the Kote, a recent invention that enables anyone to use any ninjutsu without training or chakra. As the Hokage explains, the Kote defeats the exams’ purpose of nurturing the shinobi arts.

First Stage

Proctored by Sai Yamanaka and designed by Shikamaru Nara, the first stage is held at Exam Venue B and is initially presented as a simple true or false question. All teams are given the same question regarding the fifth volume of a book on shinobi strategies and, as a team, are instructed to stand next to a flag representing what they believe the correct answer to be. Once all teams gather at their selected answer, they are dropped into a pit because, in truth, there is no fifth volume of that book and therefore no correct answer. Shortly before being dropped, the genin are warned that anyone who «turns black» will fail.

The actual objective of the exam is for genin, once dropped into the pit, to not get any of the ink that pools at the bottom of each pit on themselves. By not falling in the ink, genin demonstrate quick thinking and a willingness to persevere despite apparent failure, thus allowing them to continue to the second stage.

In the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime, Exam Venue B is preceded by Exam Venue A. Exam Venue A serves as a place where all participating genin are told by Sai that the first exam will start in another venue which involves a true or false question and to enter the next exam venue, each team would have to go through a series of traps and make it to the next venue within the allotted time limit or else they fail and are not allowed to take the exam. The participants are expected to leave while Sai is still explaining the rules, having already started the timer, and Tenten oversees the activation of traps along the way, increasing their difficulty as deemed necessary.

Second Stage

Eight teams made it to this round. Proctored by Tenten with assistance from Shino Aburame, the second stage is held three days after the first. Teams are paired against each other in a game of capture the flag. Teams must simultaneously defend their own flag and capture the opposing team’s flag in order to pass to the final rounds. The movie’s novelisation adds that teams are not allowed to kill opponents, partly for humane reasons, but also in order to test genin’s ability to keep and benefit from prisoners.

Finals

Four teams passed the previous round and made it into the finals. The finals are tournament matches held in a stadium, observed by the five Kage and any other interested parties. Refereed by Rock Lee, the first two rounds are one-on-one matches and the third round is a three-way match between the remaining finalists.

Boruto Uzumaki is caught using the Kote during his second match (the finals in the anime) and for that reason he is disqualified by the Hokage. The Hokage is immediately afterwards attacked by Kinshiki and Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki and the stadium is destroyed in the ensuing battle, thus forcing the tournament’s cancellation. In the novelisation, the exams continued after Momoshiki’s death.

Konoha Re-Examination

In the anime, following Isshiki’s attack, Naruto decides to reorganise the exam that was interrupted by Momoshiki’s attack. The exam is also reorganised in other villages, but are held separately.

First Round

A written exam. The genin are expected to cheat for answers without being caught, and they must achieve an average of 70 points per team member. Teams 5, 7, 9, 10, 15, 22, 25, 31, and 40 passed and advanced to the next round.

Second Round

Participants must rescue proctors in the role of injured allies from the Forest of Death, while avoiding traps, wildlife, and proctors in the role of enemy shinobi within a 45 minute time limit. Instead of being graded as a team, each participant is evaluated individually. Passing or failing also depends on the performance during the entirety of the exam, not just the completion of the exam.

Final Round

One-on-one matches between those who advanced to the final round. As the focus of this round is the ability to improvise and adapt to situations, the matches are only announced the day of the exam. Unlike previous exams, the use of Scientific Ninja Tools is permitted, as long as the tool in question was personally developed by the genin taking the exam. Contestants not present at the time their name is drawn are disqualified. The matches were broadcast live on KONOHA-TV.

Referenced Exams

Although only four Chūnin Exams have been depicted in the series, many others have been referenced:

• Manabu Akado has taken and failed the exams on seventeen prior occasions.
• The Third Hokage remembers Kabuto Yakushi dropping out before the finals during a previous exam. Kabuto’s records state he has failed five other times as well.
• In the anime, Ibiki Morino proctored the first stage of the exams before. Each time he changed the tenth question, such as giving the choice of either quitting and having the whole squad fail or continuing and having the lowest scoring member of the squad be forced to remain a genin forever (solution is to quit, rather than sacrifice squad members for personal gain).
• In the anime, Idate Morino was failed during the first exam by Ibiki, and was asked by him in private to stop attempting to be a ninja.^[15]
• Shikamaru Nara is in the planning stages for another Chūnin Exam at the start of Part II, the obligations of which prevent him from participating in the Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission.

Trivia

• As the exams are an opportunity for gambling, observers who placed a wager may tend to sabotage the opposing genin participant for their own benefit, as two chūnin (Midori and Shiba) were sent to stop Gaara from competing at all against Sasuke Uchiha, though the two were brutally killed instead.
• In Find the Four-Leaf Red Clover!, Kakashi says that genin who went to and returned from Akagahara were accepted as chūnin.
• In Chūnin Exam on Fire! Naruto vs. Konohamaru!, use of senjutsu is against the rules as it would give Naruto Uzumaki an unfair advantage. Indeed, Naruto, who was not listening when this was explained, was immediately disqualified when he used senjutsu.
