Visit to a theater
I recently had the opportunity to visit a theater for the first time. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget.

At the Theatre
There are not many theatres in my town, but they are all very popular with the public. I am a theatre lover, too. As for me, I prefer drama to all other theatres, but I also like opera and musical comedy.
I’ll never forget my first visit to the Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous ballet “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovskyi. We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show. At 7 sharp the performance began. From the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The costumes were fine. The dancing and music were thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it. When the curtain fell at the end of the performance, there came a storm of applause. It seemed that it would never end. The dancers received call after call. They were presented with large bouquets of flowers. We also applauded enthusiastically. The performance was a great success.

В моем городе не так много театров, но все они очень популярны среди населения. Я тоже любитель театра. Что касается меня, я предпочитаю драматический всем другим театрам, но я также люблю оперу и музыкальную комедию.
Я никогда не забуду мой первый визит в Театр оперы и балета. Мой друг и я хотели посмотреть знаменитый балет Чайковского «Лебединое озеро». Мы купили билеты заранее и пришли в театр за полчаса до шоу. Ровно в 7 началось представление. С первой же минуты я был глубоко впечатлен всем, что увидел на сцене. Костюмы были хороши. Танцы и музыка были захватывающими. Балет показался мне сказкой. Я никогда не видел ничего прекраснее. Мой друг и я наслаждались каждой минутой. Когда занавес опустился в конце спектакля, раздался взрыв аплодисментов. Казалось, что этому не будет конца. Танцоров вызывали снова и снова. Им подарили большие букеты цветов. Мы также аплодировали с энтузиазмом. Спектакль имел большой успех.

We go to the theatre to see a play, that is to say, a performance given by actors and actresses. A play of a serious character, dealing with important human problems is called a tragedy. A play of a humorous, lighter character is a comedy (or a farce). Dramatists are called playwrights nowadays and there are no longer such great dramatists as Shakespeare or G. B. Show.
If we want to go to a theatre we buy tickets at the box-office and show them to the attendant at the entrance. In the building there is a hall, a large foyer and a cloak-room where we leave our overcoats, hats, etc. The audience can walk in the foyer in the intervals. Many doors lead to the auditorium consisting of stalls, boxes and balconies. In front of the auditorium there is a curtain separating it from the stage. The curtain rises when the play begins and falls at the end of each act.
Many people must work together to produce a play. The author writes it; the producer conducts the acting; carpenters, mechanics, designers prepare the scenery; electricians and light operators see to the light effects and operate the floodlights. We, the playgoers (or fans) demand an interesting plot, good acting, impressive scenery — that is two hours of good entertainment.

Theatre is a performance art, which many people truly like. In
this age, everybody has TV sets and computers at home, but still people go to
theatres all around the world – from little creative studios to grandiose performance
venues.
As for me, I visit theatres seldom, but I have already watched
one performance this year. I would like to describe it to you. Recently my
friend Dmitriy invited me to the Music Hall Theatre in St. Petersburg to watch
opera Evgeniy Onegin. I dressed up in my best long dress, made a nice hairdo
and applied evening make-up. Dmitriy wore his black suit and varnished shoes.
We met an hour before the play and went to the theatre on foot.
At the theatre, we bought the booked tickets in the ticket
office and went to the performance hall to take our seats. I liked the interior
of the theatre. We watched the opera from the balcony. There were three acts
and two intermissions, during which we shared our expressions and drank coffee
in the theatre’s bar.
In the beginning it was difficult for me to understand the
words, because the actors were singing. Their actions on the scene, though,
helped to follow the plot. It was a classical story about love and broken
hearts – very touching, I felt compassion for the main characters. In general,
my impressions of the opera were contradictory. On the one hand, I liked the
actors’ dresses, the decorations and the expressive performance of some of the
actors. On the other hand, I didn’t like much singing, though it was highly
professional. But anyway it was a nice experience, which I would like to repeat
one day.

представление посмотреть уже успела. Я бы хотела описать его вам. Недавно мой
друг Дмитрий пригласил меня в театр «Мюзик-Холл» в Санкт-Петербурге на оперу
«Евгений Онегин». Я нарядилась в свое лучшее длинное платье, сделала красивую
прическу и наложила вечерний макияж. На Дмитрии был его черный костюм и
лакированные туфли. Мы встретились за час до начала представления и пошли в
театр пешком.
В театре мы купили забронированные билеты в кассе и прошли в
зал, чтобы занять наши места. Мне понравилось внутреннее убранство театра. Мы
смотрели оперу с балкона. Было три акта и два антракта, во время которых мы
делились впечатлениями и пили кофе в театральном буфете.
Поначалу мне было сложно разбирать слова, потому что актеры
пели. Их действия на сцене, однако, помогали следить за развитием сюжета. Это
была классическая история о любви и разбитых сердцах – очень трогательная, я
сопереживала главным героям. В целом, мои впечатления от оперы были
противоречивыми. С одной стороны, мне понравились наряды актеров, декорации и
выразительная игра некоторых из актеров. С другой стороны, мне не понравилось то,
что было много пения, хотя оно и было на очень хорошем уровне. Но в любом
случае это был замечательный опыт, который я бы хотела как-нибудь повторить.
