I have already read this book a few times. I liked the books more than the movies. I will definitely read Harry Potter again.

Books play a very important role in my life. I think that modern life is impossible without reading. The more I read, the more knowledge and experience I get. I can’t say that all books are useful. Some are boring and pointless.
I like both fiction and non-fiction books, but my favourite genre is detective stories. This includes Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot books. I started reading books when I was quite young, about 8 or 9 years old. My first books were fantasy stories and I really enjoyed them.
At the moment we have many books on school program and I get less time for reading my favourite ones. I can’t say that I don’t like classical literature. It is also quite good. I especially like Pushkin’s poems and Gogol’s short stories. Sometimes I also read various stories in English. If I see an unknown or new word, I check its meaning in a dictionary.
The last story I read was “A cup of tea” by Katherine Mansfield. The plot was really engaging and the style of writing too. I’d like to read more stories by this author.

In my opinion, the rating of good books should be independent of the fact whether they are liked and understood by everyone. In this case, I would prefer to take a real book as the weightiest argument for my idea. So, everybody knows “War and Peace” written by Tolstoy. It is the fact that this novel is good in many aspects. But most people hate to read it. That is why we cannot consider people’s tastes and ability to understand things to be the criterion for grading books. In addition to it, a good book should solve important problems and not just satisfy somebody’s taste and suit somebody’s intellectual abilities.
However, a lot of people believe that books loved and understood by everyone can be good. They fall back on the idea that all people cannot be in the wrong.
Nevertheless, I cannot adopt the above mentioned point of view because a lot of facts are known when beliefs of a single person turned out to be true, disproving the majority opinion.
To sum it up, good books are not necessarily a great favourite of all people but they are conceptually great and important for humanity.

In modern world we have a variety of different books. Some people are convinced that books are only worth reading if they are popular and simple for understanding. However, others believe the орроsite.
As far as I am concerned, any book may be good if you like it. Firstly, different people have different tastes. For some people one book can be amazing, but for others it may be awful. It is not a surprise because there are so many books of different genres. Secondly, people usually have a different range of knowledge. Open-minded people prefer books by classical poets. Not everyone can easily understand great novels like «Peace and war», for example. Although it does not mean that it is a bad book.
However, some people do not quite share my point of view. They state that a good book is only the one that is easy to understand for people of all ages since books should make people feel relaxed and entertained.
Nonetheless, I cannot quite agree with my opponents’ point of view. I believe that books may be used for various reasons and people should choose books for themselves depending on what they want to get from reading. Thus, every book is a good book in its own way.
To sum it all up, I would like to say that good books are those books that really suit to your tastes, but not to tastes of all people. That is why bad books just do not exist.

Nowadays it’s
almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Perhaps,

Classics should
be taken a little at a time. One’s understanding of books by
Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one’s
age and experience.
Serious books are
to be read conscientiously and maybe more than once. To a
thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every
time he rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science
fiction, fantasy or detective stories. Of course, there are some
advantages and disadvantages of this kind of literature, often
reffered to as «easy reading».
As for me, good
science fiction and fantasy develop imagination, logical
thinking, broader one’s outlook.
The same could be
said in favour of detective stories. They reveal such minute
details of everyday life in this or that particular country that
are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces
of this genre by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Agatha Christie and others, show the depths of
psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.
As an old saying
goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of
knowledge and the means of self — perfection. Sometimes it is
difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can
help us. Books must be our friends during all our life.

There are fiction and non-Fiction books. Fiction books are thought up by authors though they can be based on true events. Non-Fiction books contain real facts.
Fiction literature offers a great variety of genres to readers: romance, historical novels, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, fables, fairy-tales, drama, poetry. Non-Fiction includes biographies and autobiographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs. Every reader has his favourite genre corresponding to his taste and character.
Why Do People Read?
People read books because they are a valuable source of information and knowledge. Studying is one of the main reasons why people read books. It is impossible to imagine modern school without books.
The programme material is contained mostly in textbooks. Reading develops mind and thinking abilities. Books consider the eternal questions of life, so they help us in everyday situations and stimulate our self-perfection.
My Favourite Book
One of my favourite books is “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway. The fisherman Santiago is very devoted to the sea where he has been fishing since his early days. He has always been prepared for the battle with a big fish.
The battle is dangerous and hard but the old man morally wins the battle. His words “man can be destroyed but not defeated” are the main idea of Hemingway’s masterpiece. This book inspires me greatly especially at the most difficult moments of my life. Isn’t it the value of literature?

They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our homeland. Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn’t read «Alice in the wonderland», «Mowgli»? Who hasn’t travelled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn’t imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island? I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is «The adventures of Tom Sawyer» by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with the children all over the world. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends. If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it from the library and read it. Books are worth reading. Readly, they are our good friends.

The librarian is always ready to help you to find a book on any subject, even if you do not know the title of the book you want. Those who know how to use the library catalogue can find the books without consulting the librarian.
Talks, exhibitions and other events take place in libraries. Book lists are prepared beforehand to awake a new interest among the visitors. Except reading special and scientific literature it is a great pleasure to read belles-lettres.
Different people like to read different kinds of books. It depends on one’s taste and character. Some people prefer detectives or science fiction. Others like historical books. Girls and women prefer love stories. Children like comics very much.
As for me, I prefer … My favourite book is … It is very interesting and exciting. The main character of the book is … He (she) is a real personality. He (she) is clever (kind, courageous, strong, merry). I wish to be like him (her).

The book is also a thing that makes us think. Books make us think about real values of life and the main principles of our existence on the Earth. Books tell us about the world around us and teach us to be brave and honest, to understand other people, to help the old people and the younger ones, to love our Motherland, to be a true friend. They help us to understand what is right and what is wrong.
There are books of all kinds: novels, historical novels, a science fiction, a biography, a classic, detective stories, fairy tails, adventure stories, humorous stories, a folktale. Books can be interesting, entertaining, exciting, powerful, witty. Some people read for insruction, other people read just for pleasure. Reading books also helps us in our education.
We can find all kinds of books in the libraries. In some libraries we can also find books in many foreign languages. Reading rooms are open to all who wish to work there.
There are a lot of famous names in the World literature. Ukrainian literature is presented by such names as T.Shevchenko, P.Mirny, I.Kotlyarevsky, M.Kotsyubinsky, I.Franko, L.Ukrainka, L.Kostenko and many others.
I think that serious books should be read thoughtfully and maybe more than once. To a thinking reader they may give new food for thought every time he rereads them.
As for me, I like to read adventure stories because it’s very interesting for me to follow the plot. I like that the characters of adventure stories are always eager to help each other in difficult situations. It’s amazing to get involved into imaginary world created by an author. While reading I live dozen of lives, have hundreds of adventures, visit thousands of fantastic places in different corners of our planet.
Sometimes it is rather difficult to solve some problems in our life. I think that books can help us and give the necessary advice. Undoubtedly, books must be our friends during all our life.
As an old proverb says, ‘A man cannot live on bread alone’.

A book is one of the greatest wonders of world. Why are so many people fond of reading? The world of books is full of wonders. You and characters of books can find yourselves in different countries and have a lot of adventures. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and characters. We try to look like the characters of our favourite books: to be brave, honest, not to be silly and greedy, to be true friends. We enjoyed the beauty and wisdom of fairy-tales and fables when we were babies and Granny read them to us. They taught us to be kind, clever, hardworking, to understand other people and help them. They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our homeland.
Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn’t read “Alice in the Wonderland”, “Mowgli”? Who hasn’t travelled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn’t imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island?
I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with children all over the world. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides, he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends.
If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it in a library and read it. Books are worth reading. Really, they are our good friends.

But there is another point of you on this problem. Some people think that books are not important in our life. They think that everybody has a computer with the Internet access and can use it every day. They say that books are very old things, and it is not interesting to read them because books do not understand their life. They also think that modern books are very boring. These people prefer to read magazines in the mornings. It is a pity that many children prefer playing computer games to reading books.
So, in conclusion I would like to say that the role of books is very important in our modern life because with their help we develop our horizon and get new knowledge.

My name is Anastasia. I’m fourteen years old. I’m fond of reading. Books take an important place in my life. I was taught to like and take care of books from the childhood. I find out much new, useful and interesting information from books. They teach me to take right decisions and apprehend school subjects better. I can find an answer to any interesting question in books. I get knowledge from them. I like to read books about the Middle Ages and also I like historical and fantastic works. I plunge into another world at once. Also I like scientific stories about animals and plants. The book is a medicine for soul. When I finish reading of a good book I always feel upset because of its fast end. One famous writer said that books are our friends. I completely agree with him. It seems to me that books take an important place in our life and they are necessary for everybody.

Многие люди увлекаются чтением фантастики, в том числе научной, или детективов. Конечно, есть свои преимущества и недостатки у этого вида литературы, относящегося к «легкому чтиву».
На мой взгляд, хорошая фантастика развивает воображение, логическое мышление, расширяет кругозор.
То же самое может быть сказано в защиту детективов. Они описывают такие мелкие детали повседневной жизни той или иной страны, которые очень интересны любопытному читателю. Шедевры этого жанра сэра Артура Конан Дойла, Агаты Кристи и других показывают глубины психологического анализа, проникновения в человеческую натуру.
Как говорится в старой пословице, не хлебом единым жив человек. Книги — источник знания и средство самосовершенствования. Иногда очень трудно решить некоторые жизненные проблемы. Я думаю, что книги помогают нам в этом. Книги должны быть нашими друзьями на протяжении всей жизни.
