I like listening to music. However, I only listen to it in certain situations. For example, I always switch on my player and listen to music when I have to travel somewhere far. A lot of people turn on their record players when they do some routine work. As for me, I love listening to music when I tidy up my house. I like English and Russian songs. My favourite musical style is pop. I like it because these songs are very simple and you can listen to this kind of music in any situation. It suits every mood. There are a lot of songs which I know by heart and enjoy singing them along with the singer.
I don’t like heavy music. It makes me feel depressed. However, I like listening to the legends of classical rock, such as Scorpions. Their songs cannot be compared to modern ones.
Sometimes I just turn on tranquil melodies. It can be sound of waves or other sounds of nature. This type of music helps me to relax after a long day. Usually this music playson low volume somewhere in the background. I can switch it on when I study as it helps to be in the right mood.
There is no doubt that music plays a significant role in our life. It helps to relax. It helps to release the energy. It adds some fun to parties. It creates special atmosphere during a romantic date. It benefits little babies. It unites people. And these points are just a few to name. Music brightens our life and I am glad that every person in the world can find his or her own favourite type of music.

I am a real lover of music. So are all my friends. Our music preferences are the same and I am very glad about it because we never argue about music. In my playlist you can find different music of different singers and years. For example, I like both modern rock and classic music. It seems strange, doesn’t it?

The significant part of my music collection is rock. I like this kind of music. It may seem aggressive but actually it makes me active and helps to wake up in the morning. I like the energy of the rock music.

I like the way of expressing feelings in these kinds of music.

If I start a conversation about music, then in my heart immediately becomes warmer. This music, which touches my heart, is classical music. But most of all I like music, performing on the piano. After that, I immediately enrolled in a music school where I was introduced to the beauty. And you know it has helped me in the future. Sometimes, when my apartment is empty, I sit down to an instrument to relieve stress, to calm down. At this moment I am completely focused only on my thoughts and I can think only about beautiful things. Currently, scientists proved that listening to classical music has a beneficial effect on the physical and the moral state of a man. This music always makes you to have emotions or associations, as though reading a good book and, together with its heroes live among them. Classical music also enhances the memory of a man. Our life without classical music, like as a novel with no idea.

Can you think of a day without music? We can hear music everywhere: in the streets and at home, over the radio and on TV, in the shops and in the parks. People all over the world are fond of music. They listen to music, they dance to music, they learn to play musical instruments.
But what is music? Specialists explain that music isn’t only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects life. There are a lot of different kinds of music. Some of them appeared long ago, and some are modern. For example, folk music appeared long ago, but it is still alive. There are many local performers, choirs and folk groups in Russia; but perhaps the most famous singer is Nadezhda Babkina. Folk songs are very tuneful and pleasant to listen to. Classical music is often associated with the music of the past. However, this style also includes music being written now, and we may speak of modern classical music. Rap is a modern musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words in time to music with a steady beat. Such groups as Public Enemy or House of Pain are leaders in this style.
Great Britain has produced more popular music stars than any other country. Over the last 30 years rock and pop music have been very popular in Britain. The Beatles, with their style of singing, eloquent and exciting, is still one of the most popular groups. British groups often set new trends in music. New styles, groups and singers continue to appear. Some of the more recent pop groups are Dire Straits, Eurhythmics and Spice Girls. Many of the new bands have been able to use the changes in technology to develop their music. Computerized drum machines, synthesizers and other electronic instruments are now just as popular as the piano and electric guitars.
Tastes differ. So people’s musical interests range from pop and rock music, which are extremely popular nowadays, especially among young people, to classical music and opera.
My favourite style of music is pop music, because it is breathtaking and full of energy. When I listen to pop music it makes me remember happy times and forget the problems of everyday life. It helps me to relax when I’m tired, and entertains me when I’d like to have fun. My favourite group is Abba. It was formed in 1973 in Sweden. Abba’s cheerful tunes made them international pop stars and one of the most successful groups of the seventies. Their most famous songs (“Waterloo”, “Money, Money, Money”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, etc.) often topped European charts. Though the group doesn’t exist any more, it is still popular with people of all ages. I can’t but admire their style of singing. I find it fascinating and overwhelming. When I have free time I listen to their records. I also like having background music while I am working.
I don’t mind listening to dance music, especially when I go to disco clubs. This style of music is catchy and I like catchy tunes. It makes me more energetic.
It’s a pity that many young people like to listen only to modern music. As for me, I also enjoy listening to classical music. I find it tuneful and appealing. Classical music is always a complex of emotions. It gives me delight, pleasure and a sense of happiness. Some pieces of classical music are really wonderful. Not long ago I listened to the First Piano Concerto, composed by Tchaikovsky. The power of his music captivated me. The impression was overwhelming.
The music I hate is heavy metal. I find it noisy and dreadful. When I listen to this style of music it presents to my mind pictures of dark days. Though some young people are fond of this style of music, it is not to everyone’s taste. To my mind, music too loud can destroy our ears. I am indifferent to other styles of music. For example, I don’t mind listening to jazz. Improvisation is an important part of this style, that’s why a jazz song may sound a little different each time it is played. I think that jazz is a mixture of many different kinds of music, but I consider it a bit complicated.
My mother and father approve of my tastes in music. Though they prefer to listen to classical and “bard music”, they think that, on the whole, modern music is not too bad. My parents agree that each generation has its own tastes.
It goes without saying that music plays a very important role in people’s lives. It reflects our moods and emotions. Music appeals to our hearts and transforms our feelings. It conquers our souls and enriches our minds. Besides, listening to music is the perfect way to spend free time and not to feel bored. You can hardly find a person who doesn’t like or need music and who never sings or dances. Music is beauty in sounds; it is our magic source of inspiration.

Music is the key to your soul
“Music is the key to your soul.” How many times have you heard a song and you are suddenly transformed back to the place you first heard it or shared it with another person? A musical melody can trigger thoughts and memories of a favorite place, person or event.
Music is a universal language that can be shared with people everywhere. This is one of the many reasons I am passionate about sharing my God-given talent with people in different venues, including concert halls, churches, people’s homes or stages.
Music has always been a very important part of my life. At the age of 5, I was taking piano lessons, which required daily practicing and discipline. I went on to play flute in fourth grade and switched to oboe after “buzzing” an oboe reed at summer Band School in Elizabeth, N.J. My love affair with my oboe began! I taught myself to play French horn and trumpet in high school, rounding out my embouchure.
I credit my love of music to my family, starting with my grandmother, who lived with us, teaching piano out of our home, for 21 years. My mom continues to play cello, after 70 years of performing. Dad played alto saxophone, performing with a big band in Williamsburg, Va., up until relocating to Maryland last year. Both my siblings played instruments from a young age, as well.
Music joins people together in a unique and lasting way. I continue to play with musicians from the University of Delaware and with those from the Delmarva and Baltimore area. Music brought my husband and I together, when he attended a woodwind quintet concert at UD, prior to going out on our first dinner date. He continues to support me with my musical commitments, as well as our daughters, all of whom played musical instruments at the county and state levels.
The creative process is an integral part of making music. It starts from within your soul and heart. You need to be able to take black notes on a page and make them into an expressive, rich and beautiful musical creation. The musician needs to transform a written piece of music into a musical masterpiece the listener will never forget. The composition needs to not only to be communicated in the style and period of the composer, but also needs to be delivered with emotion, expression and individuality.
Music is as diverse as the composers who wrote it. As an artist, you must be able to convey and share the emotion of the music to your audience/congregation. For this transference to be successful, you must first feel the passion of the music from within yourself and then deliver it in a creative way that can relate to every person in your audience.
Music is meant to be shared. My greatest joys in life include music — from my marriage, a wedding, a funeral, a concert, a church service, a social event or the birth of a child. I plan to continue sharing my gift of music for a very long time. Let the music play on …

Music is the universal language of the world with some meaning at least for the immense majority of people. It is the mirror of our lives and life problems. People can’t live without music.
It is everywhere at home, in a concert hall, in parks at the seaside and even in the forest. Nowadays it thunders out of every high-street shop, hotel, restaurant, public transport.
Music is an art, which reflects life, people’s ideas and emotions. There are different musical genres: symphony, concerto, opera, ballet and others.
Some music is difficult to understand, but other’s types are not very difficult. Some people have an idea of classical music as of complicated art it’s difficult to find the way into it.
As a result of changing times many young people today are gravitating towards new rhythms and new styles. Music is simple, cheerful and up-to-date now. While listening to such music you can dance or just talk to friends.
Music affects our bodies. Some music promotes loving feelings, other – hate. Susan Burghardt said that all music can be divided into 3 types. The 1st is low-energy music that makes you feel bad. The next category is high-energy music that makes you feel better and it can help to normalize heart rate. The 3d category is prayerful music that is the most healing of all. Music is being used in hospitals, and doctors have found that 20 min. of soothing music is often effective than sleeping pills.
Different people prefer different kinds of music. As for me I listen to different kinds, but most of all I prefer pop music.

I can say that I am lucky because I love classical music. My mother listened to nobody but classical composers in my childhood, so I pretty much grew up on them. She told me that fashion in music comes and goes but classical music remains. Thanks to my mom I understand this kind of music, its power and value. It can move you to tears, inspire you with the new life and affect you emotionally.
It’s hard for me to pick up just one favourite composer because there are too many great and talented ones: Mozart, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and many others. But I usually say that I’m a big fan of Vivaldi. I love his style. His music is quite emotional and sometimes serious and complicated. It goes without saying that his famous “The four seasons” is one of my favourites. This music depicts moods and scenes from each season of the year. And “Autumn” is my number one. It’s very light, elegant and festive. This piece of music always makes me happy and positive. It even makes me dance around the house. I am also moved by Vivaldi’s Concertos. They are fabulous, to my mind.
The great composer was born in 1678 in Venice. His father was a violinist, so he taught Antonio to play the violin from his early childhood. Very few people know that Antonio was also the main Catholic priest in the church of Santa Maria. Vivaldi’s repertoire is enormous, it includes more than 800 world-famous vocal and chamber pieces of music. He lived and worked in the Baroque era and created 46 operas, 90 sonatas and 500 concertos.

Music plays an important role in movies. It emphasizes the depth of feelings of actors. It makes tense moments more exciting and pleasant moments more tender. Films would be boring and not interesting without music.
When I was a teenager I liked listening to pop music. I think you remember Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Nsync and their songs about unrequited love. Recently I’m keen on rock and indie music. When I need to focus on an important task I turn on the Queen or Aerosmith. When I want to relax after a stressful day I listen to classical music. It gives me delight, pleasure and a feeling of happiness. Some pieces of classical music are really wonderful. By the way, I used to play the piano some time ago.
Music is beauty in sounds and our magic source of inspiration.

People cannot live without music. They can listen to music everywhere even in the forest, when they walk and hear birds singing.
Music can be classical and modern. Classical music is performed by symphonic orchestras in the great halls. There are a lot of famous composers whose music is played nowadays. Classical music is serious and requires good understanding that’s why it may seem to be boring and dull for some.
Most people prefer modern music. Modern music is performed by TV and radio. Modern music has different kinds: pop, rock, disco, rap, techno and others. Most young people like dance and pop. Older people are fond of jazz, rock and pop. There are a lot of singers or music bands who perform this or that kind of music.Now there are a lot of discs and records of different performers.
The last achievement in music production is a clip. Musical clips are short films accompanied by the melody. It may be a short story what the song is about or simply a great number of different pictures. People like to watch clips because it’s not only listening to music but also watching interesting things. I’m fond of music and like to listen to it for it helps me to have good relaxation.

think people can not live without it. The first thing I do in
the morning I switch on my tape — recorder.
We can hear music
everywhere: in the streets, in the shops, on TV, over the radio,
in the cars, in the parks, everywhere. I think it’s really
doesn’t matter what kind of music you prefer: rock, pop,
classical, jazz. A lot of people are fond of music. They buy
tapes, go to the concerts, visit Concert Halls and Opera
Theatres.
I enjoy listening
music because it reflects my moods and emotions. Very often when
I’m blue, I play my favourite merry songs and feel much better.
Sometimes I
attend music halls and the concerts, when popular groups and
singers are there. I like watching music programs on TV. I like
to know more and more about popular talented groups and singers
I like.
One wall of my
room is covered with posters of “Bon Jovi”, “Scorpions”, “Roxette”,
Russian singers Agutin, Sjutkin, Linda and others. Some people
go to musics schools, they play different musical instruments,
sing in the chorus, try to compose music.
Unfortunately
there are so many ungifted singers on the stages, that it makes
me sad. To have a good producer doesn’t mean to have good ears
and voice. I think that only talented people can claim to be
singers.

Music in my life
The word “music” itself has come from the name of nine ancient goddesses, the muses who were considered to inspire artists and scientists. The history of music counts hundreds of years.
Now it plays a significant role in modern youth’s life. Calm music helps us to relax and chill out after some activities. On the contrary, fast music is aimed at giving us additional energy, take away depression.
As to me  I’ve always been fond of various styles of music. Actually I’m neither a fan of any group or singer, nor of any particular style. I listen to everything that sounds nice to me. Of course, there are some groups that I prefer, for example“Queen”. This group was popular in the late 70ths and 80ths until the death of its leader, Freddy Mercury. But still its amazing songs gain more and more admirers. Everybody has heard the famous “We are the champions” or “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Moreover “Queen” is admitted to be one of the most popular British groups in the history of British pop and rock music. Freddy’s death was a real shock for hundreds of millions of his fans.
Unfortunately up-to-date popular songs are often senseless. They are sung by people without strong voices . Today’s show- business depends much more on money, than on one’s skills.
Classical music is a little bit difficult for me but I really adore some pieces of music, especially the opera. My parents and I sometimes go to the Bolshoi Theater and The Theatre of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich- Danchenko, there we can listen to classic operas and modern performances. To my mind, every man of education should sometimes turn to this kind of music because it fosters sense of beauty. Some stage managers use classical arrangement in their movies: we can remember the famous intro of “Star wars” or “Lord of the rings”.
On the whole I think music is a wonderful invention of human’s mind though we shouldn’t carry to excess. Sometimes it’s useful just to listen to the silence.

Я считаю, что каждому образованному человеку следует слушать такую музыку, потому что она развивает чувство прекрасного. Некоторые режиссёры используют классические произведения в своих фильмах: например знаменитая заставка в фильме «Звёздные войны» или «Властелин колец».

But what is music? Specialists explain that music isn’t only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects life. There are a lot of different kinds of music. Some of them appeared long ago, and some are modern. For example, folk music appeared long ago, but it is still alive. There are many local performers, choirs and folk groups in Russia; but perhaps the most famous singer is Nadezhda Babkina. Folk songs are very tuneful and pleasant to listen to. Classical music is often associated with the music of the past. However, this style also includes music being written now, and we may speak of modern classical music. Rap is a modern musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words in time to music with a steady beat. Such groups as Public Enemy or House of Pain are leaders in this style.
Great Britain has produced more popular music stars than any other country. Over the last 30 years rock and pop music have been very popular in Britain. The Beatles, with their style of singing, eloquent and exciting, is still one of the most popular groups. British groups often set new trends in music. New styles, groups and singers continue to appear. Some of the more recent pop groups are Dire Straits, Eurhythmics and Spice Girls. Many of the new bands have been able to use the changes in technology to develop their music. Computerized drum machines, synthesizers and other electronic instruments are now just as popular as the piano and electric guitars.
Tastes differ. So people’s musical interests range from pop and rock music, which are extremely popular nowadays, especially among young people, to classical music and opera.
My favourite style of music is pop music, because it is breathtaking and full of energy. When I listen to pop music it makes me remember happy times and forget the problems of everyday life. It helps me to relax when I’m tired, and entertains me when I’d like to have fun. My favourite group is Abba. It was formed in 1973 in Sweden. Abba’s cheerful tunes made them international pop stars and one of the most successful groups of the seventies. Their most famous songs (“Waterloo”, “Money, Money, Money”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, etc.) often topped European charts. Though the group doesn’t exist any more, it is still popular with people of all ages. I can’t but admire their style of singing. I find it fascinating and overwhelming. When I have free time I listen to their records. I also like having background music while I am working.
I don’t mind listening to dance music, especially when I go to disco clubs. This style of music is catchy and I like catchy tunes. It makes me more energetic.
It’s a pity that many young people like to listen only to modern music. As for me, I also enjoy listening to classical music. I find it tuneful and appealing. Classical music is always a complex of emotions. It gives me delight, pleasure and a sense of happiness. Some pieces of classical music are really wonderful. Not long ago I listened to the First Piano Concerto, composed by Tchaikovsky. The power of his music captivated me. The impression was overwhelming.
The music I hate is heavy metal. I find it noisy and dreadful. When I listen to this style of music it presents to my mind pictures of dark days. Though some young people are fond of this style of music, it is not to everyone’s taste. To my mind, music too loud can destroy our ears. I am indifferent to other styles of music. For example, I don’t mind listening to jazz. Improvisation is an important part of this style, that’s why a jazz song may sound a little different each time it is played. I think that jazz is a mixture of many different kinds of music, but I consider it a bit complicated.
My mother and father approve of my tastes in music. Though they prefer to listen to classical and “bard music”, they think that, on the whole, modern music is not too bad. My parents agree that each generation has its own tastes.
It goes without saying that music plays a very important role in people’s lives. It reflects our moods and emotions. Music appeals to our hearts and transforms our feelings. It conquers our souls and enriches our minds. Besides, listening to music is the perfect way to spend free time and not to feel bored. You can hardly find a person who doesn’t like or need music and who never sings or dances. Music is beauty in sounds; it is our magic source of inspiration.

We can listen to a lot of different styles of music. It can be rock, pop music, reggae, hip hop and others. But our ancestors left us a legacy of masterpieces of the special and unique music.
Today, we have hundreds of different music styles. But classical music is relevant to this day. Have you ever asked yourself: why classical music is eternal and has no borders decay? Classic is immortal and it is really so. This music was created by the greatest composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Glinka and others. We will not be able to meet such works anywhere in the modern world. Composers – classics sought to display their spiritual feelings, impulses, feelings, thus creating unique masterpieces. That`s why classical music is strong.
I think that classical music gives us to live, create and start, when we listen to it. It is really music of the soul and the heart, inspiration and lightness.

The issue of influence of music has always aroused heated discussions and today’s question is not an exception. Some people believe that pretty melody can help people to have a rest from work, while others argue that it cannot.

I personally favor the idea that music has an impact on people’s lives. First of all, it can be a hobby. For example, playing musical instruments or singing. Hobbies are a great way to relax. Secondly, music helps to find motivation. It is easier to do routine work while you’re listening to something. That is why music can help people to get away from problems.

Nevertheless, there is a sort of people who do not agree with my opinion. They consider that music does not relax people. Firstly, some kinds of songs can make people nervous and angry.

For example, rock and metal do not sound positive.

However veracious it sounds, I would not agree with the above mentioned idea. There are a lot of kinds of music. Some men find rock and metal music relaxing, while others prefer positive melodies. People can choose what they want to listen to and it depends on their mood and tastes.

In conclusion, I would like to say that music has an influence on people. It can help them to relax or find motivation

The music I hate is heavy metal. I find it noisy and dreadful. Though some young people are fond of this style of music, it is not to everyone’s taste. To my mind, music too loud can destroy our ears. I am indifferent to other styles of music. For example, I don’t mind listening to jazz.

It is widely believed that classical music belongs to the past and modern people require modern music. This opinion is viable and there’s no right answer, if it is true, but I am of the view, that classical music is appropriate for modern people, and I’ll tell you more it’s required. Let’s consider the problem.

First of all classical music is the mother of modern music. It often has exciting melody, just like modern music. Classical music brought the technology of recording music on paper. The era of classical music is really one of the largest in music history. It includes innumerable artists, compositions and styles, so everyone can find his favorite one. It’s important to note, that concerts of classical music take place nowadays, also there’re a lot of remakes of modern songs in classical style.

However, time goes and it brings changes to the culture. Various styles of pop-music are popular nowadays. So the classical music can’t be as competitive as pop music, because it has no such a number of composers today, it has no such an advertising campaign. But in my opinion there’s nothing wrong with this fact. Each time has just it’s own fashion, so it’s absolutely normal.

Speaking of classical music detached from the history and other factors, we can notice, that classical music is always gorgeous, magnificent, complex. One composition can combine numerous instruments, moods and styles. Also, there’s a research, that classical music has good influence on people’s mental health and brain in general. A lot of people, including me use classical music to concentrate on work in loud office, to keep calm, to enjoy every moment of this music. This way classical music can’t be compared to modern music, because it is most suitable for other situations, than modern music.

In conclusion, I want to say that modern people need classical music, because it’s an island of calmness and beauty in madness and rhythm of modern music. But they can’t be compared, because they’re so different. Regardless of your musical taste, listen to the music that you enjoy and it will bring you numerous emotions.

It was connected with three brilliant European composers: Mozart, Hayden and Beethoven. At present times people go to classical concerts to find inner peace and have a relaxing evening. Music plays an important role in my life. I simply can’t live without music. There are so many kinds of music nowadays, including rap, hip-hop, rock-n-roll, dance, classical, opera, alternative, drum & bass, techno, rock, metal, jazz, reggae, blues, etc.

I like nearly all these types. When I’m sad I listen to alternative music or rock. When I’m in good mood I listen to either hip-hop or dance music. Once or twice I went to a jazz concert, which I thought was marvelous.

Introduction

Music is found in every known culture, past and present, varying wildly between times and places. Since all people of the world, including the most isolated tribal groups, have a form of music, it may be concluded that music is likely to have been present in the ancestral population prior to the dispersal of humans around the world. Consequently music may have been in existence for at least 50,000 years and the first music may have been invented in Africa and then evolved to become a fundamental constituent of human life.

The music of the Classical period is characterized by homophonic texture, or an obvious melody with accompaniment. These new melodies tended to be almost voice-like and singable, allowing composers to actually replace singers as the focus of the music. Instrumental music therefore quickly replaced opera and other sung forms (such asoratorio) as the favorite of the musical audience and the epitome of great composition. However, opera did not disappear: during the classical period, several composers began producing operas for the general public in their native languages (previous operas were generally in Italian).

Along with the gradual displacement of the voice in favor of stronger, clearer melodies, counterpoint also typically became a decorative flourish, often used near the end of a work or for a single movement. In its stead, simple patterns, such as arpeggios and, in piano music, Alberti bass (an accompaniment with a repeated pattern typically in the left hand), were used to liven the movement of the piece without creating a confusing additional voice.

The now-popular instrumental music was dominated by several well-defined forms: the sonata, the symphony, and the concerto, though none of these were specifically defined or taught at the time as they are now in music theory. All three derive from sonata form, which is both the overlying form of an entire work and the structure of a single movement.

Sonata form matured during the Classical era to become the primary form of instrumental compositions throughout the 19th century. The early Classical period was ushered in by the Mannheim School, which included such composers as Johann Stamitz, Franz Xaver Richter, Carl Stamitz, andChristian Cannabich. It exerted a profound influence on Joseph Haydn and, through him, on all subsequent European music. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the central figure of the Classical period, and his phenomenal and varied output in all genres defines our perception of the period. Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert were transitional composers, leading into the Romantic period, with their expansion of existing genres, forms, and even functions of music.

PERIODS
Medieval

•When we explore Medieval music, we are dealing with the longest and most distant period of musical history. It includes the Gregorian chant. Gregorian chant is monophonic, meaning music that consists of only one melodic line without accompaniment. Polyphony, music where two or more melodic lines are heard simultaneously, did not exist (or was not knotted) until the 11th century. Unlike chant, polyphony required the participation of a composer to combine the melodic lines in a pleasing manner.

Renaissance

•In the mid-1500s, a prominent bishop commented that music composed for the church should reflect the meaning of the words so that the listeners would be moved to piety. This concept seems like a no-brainer today, but it was a fairly new idea at the time. To suggest that Medieval composers had no desire to write “expressive” music would be unfair. But, it was the rediscovery of ancient Greek ideals in the Renaissance that inspired many musicians to explore the eloquent possibilities of their art. •The increased value of individualism in the Renaissance is reflected by the changing role of the composer in society. Unlike most of their Medieval predecessors, the great masters of the Renaissance were revered in their own lifetimes. •Sacred music was still predominant, though secular music became more prevalent and more sophisticated. The repertory of instrumental music also began to expand significantly. New instruments were invented, including the clavichord and virginal (both keyboard instruments) and many existing instruments were improved.

Baroque (1600-1750)

•Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Johann Pachelbel, Antonio Vivaldi •Baroque music is often highly ornate, colorful and richly textured when compared with its predecessors. Opera was born at what is considered to be the very beginning of the Baroque era, around 1600. •Music’s ability to express human emotions and depict natural phenomenon was explored throughout the Baroque period. •Although imitative polyphony remained fundamental to musical composition, homophonic writing became increasingly important. Homophonic music features a clear distinction between the melody line and an subsidiary accompaniment part.

•The orchestra evolved during the early Baroque, starting as an “accompanist” for operatic and vocal music. By the mid-1600s the orchestra had a life of its own. The concerto was a favorite Baroque form that featured a solo instrumentalist (or small ensemble of soloists) playing “against” the orchestra, creating interesting contrasts of volume and texture. •Many Baroque composers were also virtuoso performers. For example, Archangelo Corelli was famous for his violin playing and Johann Sebastian Bach was famous for his keyboard skills. The highly ornamented quality of Baroque melody lent itself perfectly to such displays of musical dexterity.

Classical (1750-1820)

•Johann Christian Bach, Ledwig van Beethoven, Franz Joseph haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus •The word Classical has strong connotations, conjuring up the art and philosophy of Ancient Greece and Rome along with their ideals of balance, proportion and disciplined expression. The late Baroque style was polyphonically complex and melodically ornate. The composers of the early Classical period changed direction, writing music that was much simpler in texture. •Homophony–music in which melody and accompaniment are distinct–dominated the Classical style, and new forms of composition were developed to accommodate the transformation. Sonata form is by far the most important of these forms, and one that continued to evolve throughout the Classical period.

Although Baroque composers also wrote pieces called sonatas, the Classical sonata was quite different. •One of the most important developments of the Classical period is the growth of the public concert. Although the aristocracy would continue to play a significant role in musical life, it was now possible for composers to survive without being the employee of one person or family. This also meant that concerts were no longer limited to palace drawing rooms. Composers started organizing concerts featuring their own music, and often attracted large audiences.

The increasing popularity of the public concert had a strong impact on the growth of the orchestra. Although chamber music and solo works were played in the home or other intimate settings, orchestral concerts seemed to be naturally designed for big public spaces. As a result, symphonic music (including opera and oratorio) became more extroverted in character. Composers gradually expanded the size of the orchestra to accommodate this expanded musical vision.

Romantic (1820-1915)

Johannes Brahms, Claude Debussy, Frederic Chopin, Felix Mendelssohn, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky •Romanticism implies fantasy, spontaneity and sensuality. •The Classical period focused on structural clarity and emotional restraint. Classical music was expressive, but not so passionate that it could overwhelm a work’s equilibrium. Beethoven who was in some ways responsible for igniting the flame of romanticism, always struggled (sometimes unsuccessfully) to maintain that balance. Many composers of the Romantic period followed Beethoven’s model and found their own balance between emotional intensity and Classical form. Others reveled in the new atmosphere of artistic freedom and created music whose structure was designed to support its emotional surges. Musical story-telling became important, and not just in opera, but in “pure” instrumental music as well. The tone-poem is a particularly Romantic invention, as it was an orchestral work whose structure was entirely dependent on the scene being depicted or the story being told.

•Color was another important feature of Romantic music. New instruments were added to the orchestra and composers experimented with ways to get new sounds from existing instruments. A large palette of musical colors was necessary to depict the exotic scenes that became so popular. •In addition to seeking out the sights and sounds of other places, composers began exploring the music of their native countries. Nationalism became a driving force in the late Romantic period and composers wanted their music to express their cultural identity. This desire was particularly intense in Russia and Eastern Europe, where elements of folk music were incorporated into symphonies, tone-poems and other “Classical” forms.

•The Romantic period was the heyday of the virtuoso. Exceptionally gifted performers–and particularly pianists, violinists, and singers–became enormously popular. Liszt, the great Hungarian pianist/composer, reportedly played with such passion and intensity that women in the audience would faint. Since, like Liszt, most composers were also virtuoso performers, it was inevitable that the music they wrote would be extremely challenging to play. •The Romantic period witnessed an unprecedented glorification of the artist–whether musician, poet or painter–that has had a powerful impact on our own culture.

Modern (ca, 1915-Present)
Aaron Copland, George Gershwin

•The late Romantic period featured its own extremes: sprawling symphonies and tone-poems overflowing with music that seemed to stretch harmony and melody to their limits. It is certainly possible to view some early 20th century music as an extension of the late Romantic style, but a great deal of it can also be interpreted as a reaction against that style. •20th century music is a series of “isms” and “neo-isms.” The primal energy of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring has been called neo-Primitivism. The intensely emotional tone of Schönberg’s early music has been labeled Expressionism. The return to clearly structured forms and textures has been dubbed neo-Classicism.

These terms have been employed in an attempt to organize the diversity of styles running through the 20th century. •Nationalism continued to be a strong musical influence in the first half of the century. The study of folk songs enriched the music of numerous composers, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams (England), Bela Bartok (Hungary), Heitor Villa Lobos (Brazil) and Aaron Copland (USA). Jazz and popular musical styles have also been tremendously influential on “classical” composers from both the United States and Europe. •Technology has played a increasingly important role in the development of 20th century music. Composers have used recording tape as a compositional tool (such as Steve Reich’s Violin Phase). Electronically generated sounds have been used both on their own and in combination with traditional

•instruments. More recently, computer technology has been used in a variety of ways, including manipulating the performance of instruments in real time.

Characteristics

Given the extremely broad variety of forms, styles, genres, and historical periods generally perceived as being described by the term “classical music,” it is difficult to list characteristics that can be attributed to all works of that type. Vague descriptions are plentiful, such as describing classical music as anything that “lasts a long time,” a statement made rather moot when one considers contemporary composers who are described as classical; or music that has certain instruments like violins, which are also found in other genres. However, there are characteristics that classical music contains that few or no other genres of music contain.

Literature

The most outstanding characteristic of classical music is that the repertoire tends to be written down in musical notation, creating a musical part or score. This score typically determines details of rhythm, pitch, and, where two or more musicians (whether singers or instrumentalists) are involved, how the various parts are coordinated. The written quality of the music has, in addition to preserving the works, enabled a high level of complexity within them: Bach’s fugues, for instance, achieve a remarkable marriage of boldly distinctive melodic lines weaving in counterpoint yet creating a coherent harmonic logic that would be impossible in the heat of live improvisation.

Instrumentation

The instruments used in most classical music were largely invented before the mid-19th century (often much earlier), and codified in the 18th and 19th centuries. They consist of the instruments found in an orchestra, together with a few other solo instruments (such as thepiano, harpsichord, and organ). The symphony orchestra is the most widely known medium for classical music. The orchestra includes members of the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion families. Electric instruments such as the electric guitar appear occasionally in the classical music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Both classical and popular musicians have experimented in recent decades with electronic instruments such as the synthesizer, electric and digital techniques such as the use of sampled or computer-generated sounds, and the sounds of instruments from other cultures such as thegamelan.

None of the bass instruments existed until the Renaissance. In Medieval music, instruments are divided in two categories: loud instruments for use outdoors or in church, and quieter instruments for indoor use. The Baroque orchestra consisted of flutes, oboes, horns and violins, occasionally with trumpets and timpani. Many instruments today associated with popular music filled important roles in early classical music, such as bagpipes, vihuelas, hurdy-gurdies, and some woodwind instruments.

On the other hand, instruments such as the acoustic guitar, once associated mainly with popular music, gained prominence in classical music in the 19th and 20th centuries. While equal temperament became gradually accepted as the dominant musical temperament during the 18th century, different historical temperaments are often used for music from earlier periods. For instance, music of the English Renaissance is often performed in meantone temperament. Keyboards almost all share a common layout (often called the piano keyboard).

Form

Whereas most popular styles lend themselves to the song form, classical music has been noted for its development of highly sophisticated forms of instrumental music:[11] these include the concerto, symphony, sonata, suite, étude, symphonic poem, and others. Classical composers often aspire to imbue their music with a very complex relationship between its affective (emotional) content and the intellectual means by which it is achieved. Many of the most esteemed works of classical music make use of musical development, the process by which a musical idea or motif is repeated in different contexts or in altered form. The sonata form andfugue employ rigorous forms of musical development. The other notable form in classical music is opera.

Technical execution

Along with a desire for composers to attain high technical achievement in writing their music, performers of classical music are faced with similar goals of technical mastery, as demonstrated by the proportionately high amount of schooling and private study most successful classical musicians have had when compared to “popular” genre musicians, and the large number of secondary schools, including conservatories, dedicated to the study of classical music. The only other genre in the Western world with comparable secondary education opportunities is jazz.

Complexity

Professional performance of classical music repertoire demands a significant level of proficiency in sight-reading and ensemble playing, thorough understanding of tonal and harmonic principles, knowledge of performance practice, and a familiarity with the style/musical idiom inherent to a given period, composer or musical work are among the most essential of skills for the classically trained musician.

Works of classical repertoire often exhibit artistic complexity through the use of counterpoint, thematic development, phrasing, harmonization, modulation (change of key), texture, and, of course,musical form itself. Larger-scale compositional forms (such as that of the symphony, concerto, opera or oratorio, for example) usually represent a hierarchy of smaller units consisting of phrases,periods, sections, and movements. Musical analysis of a composition aims at achieving greater understanding of it, leading to more meaningful hearing and a greater appreciation of the composer’s style. Society

Classical music regularly features as background music for movies, television programmes, advertisements and events. Nessun dorma from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot for example was the theme tune for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Relation to Education

Throughout history, parents have often made sure that their children receive classical music training from a young age.Some parents pursue music lessons for their children for social reasons or in an effort to instill a sense of self-discipline. Some believe that knowledge of important works of classical music is part of a good general education. During the 1990s, several research papers and popular books wrote on what came to be called the
“Mozart effect”: an observed temporary, small elevation of scores on certain tests as a result of listening to Mozart’s works. The approach has been popularized in a book by Don Campbell, and is based on an experiment published in Nature suggesting that listening to Mozart temporarily boosted students’ IQ by 8 to 9 points This popularized version of the theory was expressed succinctly by a New York Times music columnist: “researchers… have determined that listening to Mozart actually makes you smarter.

“Promoters marketed CDs claimed to induce the effect. Florida passed a law requiring toddlers in state-run schools to listen to classical music every day, and in 1998 the governor of Georgia budgeted $105,000 per year to provide every child born in Georgia with a tape or CD of classical music. In 1996–1997, a research study was conducted on a large population of middle age students in the Cherry Creek School District in Denver, Colorado, USA. The study showed that students who actively listen to classical music before studying had higher academic scores. The research further indicated that students who listened to the music prior to an examination also had positively elevated achievement scores.

Students who listened to rock-and-roll or country had moderately lower scores. The study further indicated that students who used classical during the course of study had a significant leap in their academic performance; whereas, those who listened to other types of music had significantly lowered academic scores. The research was conducted over several schools within the Cherry Creek School District and was conducted through University of Colorado. This study is reflective of several recent studies (i.e. Mike Manthei and Steve N. Kelly of the University of Nebraska at Omaha; Donald A. Hodges and Debra S. O’Connell of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; etc.) and others who has significant results through the discourse of their work.

SUMMARY

Personally, I listen to classical music and this is my topic for my ongoing thesis, listening to classical music somehow brings you back to old times, helps me to appreciate art and improves my cognition.

Classical music is a music that never gets old, a gift that we, the new generation must take care of.
