Every invention is the important step of the progress. Many years ago robots were something fantastic and unreal. The idea of using robots as helpers in houses or as alternates of a human being was the main idea of science fiction. Nowadays it is quite real. |

Robots
Every day we hear and read about more and more electronic devices that make our lives easier — computers, smart watches, mobile phones, vacuum-cleaning robots, autonomous cars and others. In fact, this is not surprising. People have always wanted to make their life more comfortable, to avoid doing routine work.
The idea of mechanized human-like figures dates back to ancient times. In the 19th century robotic-like creatures were described in fiction, and in 1921 Karel Capek, a Czech writer, coined the term «robot». But the first real digitally operated and programmable robot was invented only in 1954.
Now robots can be met in various areas of life. They perform jobs more cheaply or with greater accuracy and reliability than humans. Robots are used for jobs which are too dirty, dangerous or dull to be suitable for people. Robots can communicate, walk and even run, swim, build, play football, ping pong and chess, dance and play the piano…
It is quite possible that in the nearest future robots will help us to do all jobs about the house — cook, walk pet dogs, baby-sit. But robots will hardly be able to replace people everywhere because they cannot be emotional or creative. Besides, they are not able to understand context.
Thus, despite the fact that robots can read and count well, they are strong, enduring and able to work without stopping, it is obvious that they cannot be our multi-purpose assistants and friends, until they become more human and gain consciousness.

Каждый день мы слышим и читаем о все большем количестве электронных устройств, которые делают нашу жизнь проще: компьютеры, умные часы, мобильные телефоны, роботы-пылесосы, беспилотные автомобили и другие механизмы. На самом деле, это не удивительно. Люди всегда хотели сделать свою жизнь более комфортной, избежать рутинной работы.
Идея человекоподобных механизмов восходит к античности. В XIX веке роботоподобные существа были описаны в художественной литературе, а в 1921 году чешский писатель Карел Чапек придумал термин «робот». Но первый по-настоящему цифровой и программируемый робот был изобретен только в 1954 году.
Теперь роботов можно встретить в самых разных сферах жизни. Они выполняют работу дешевле или с большей точностью и надежностью, чем люди. Роботы используются для работ, слишком грязных, опасных или скучных для людей. Роботы могут общаться, ходить и даже бегать, плавать, строить, играть в футбол, настольный теннис и шахматы, танцевать и играть на пианино…
Вполне возможно, что в ближайшем будущем роботы станут помогать нам со всей работой по дому: готовить, гулять с собаками, смотреть на детьми. Но роботы вряд ли смогут заменить людей повсюду, потому что им недоступны эмоции и они не могут творить. Кроме того, они не способны понять контекст.
Таким образом, несмотря на то, что роботы умеют хорошо читать и считать, они сильны, выносливы и способны работать без остановки, очевидно, что они не могут быть нашими универсальными помощниками и друзьями, пока не станут более человечными и не приобретут сознание.

Man has always tried to make his existence easier and find helpers who are ready to perform the most difficult physical labor. At first, animals were attracted for this, using them, people transported various goods, plowed the land. They also tried to use natural phenomena: wind, streams of water, which set in motion various mechanisms: mills, sailing ships. Over time, man learned to invent various machines, moving first thanks to the energy of steam, and then electricity. In our time, the working person is being replaced by robots. And it is already impossible to name a field in which these automatic devices would not be used.
What are the benefits robots have? Firstly, they can work non-stop and without losing focus and speed. Whereas a person needs to take breaks every hour to relieve tension and increase concentration. Secondly, they perform the assigned task better, because they do not know fatigue or loss of interest. And a person, unfortunately, is susceptible to these conditions, which lead to inevitable mistakes. Thirdly, robots do not have mood problems, and they perform the most tedious work productively day after day, which cannot be said about us, humans. We are creatures living with emotions, and in many ways, they determine our attitude towards life and work. Fourth, robots will not complain about low wages and will not stage protest demonstrations if they do not like something.
I think you will agree with me that robots should be used in areas where work can pose a threat to human health and life: coal or oil mining, chemical production, etc. But when you come to the hospital, you want to talk with a qualified doctor who will listen to you and say a kind word. And we want to enjoy the works of art that are created by people, and not soulless machines.

Человек всегда стремился облегчить свое существование и найти помощников, готовых выполнять самый тяжелый физический труд. Сперва для этого привлекали животных, используя их, люди перевозили различные грузы, пахали землю. Также пытались использовать природные явления: ветер, потоки воды, которые приводили в движение различные механизмы: мельницы, парусные судна. Со временем человек научился изобретать различные станки, двигающиеся сначала благодаря энергии пара, а затем электричества. В наше время работающего человека начинают вытеснять роботы. И уже невозможно назвать сферу, в которой бы не применялись эти автоматические устройства.
Какими преимуществами они обладают? Во-первых, они могут работать безостановочно и без потери внимания и скорости. В то время как человеку необходимо делать перерывы каждый час, чтобы снять напряжение и повысить концентрацию. Во-вторых, они выполняют поставленную задачу более качественно, поскольку им не ведома усталость или потеря заинтересованности. А человек, к сожалению, подвержен этим состояниям, которые ведут к неминуемым ошибкам. В-третьих, у роботов не бывает проблем с настроением, и они изо дня в день продуктивно выполняют самую нудную работу, чего не скажешь о нас, людях. Мы существа, живущие эмоциями, и во многом они определяют наше отношение к жизни и работе. В-четвертых, роботы не станут жаловаться на низкую зарплату и не будут устраивать демонстраций протеста, если им что-то не понравилось.
Думаю, вы со мной согласитесь, что роботов нужно использовать в тех областях, где работа может представлять угрозу для здоровья и жизни человека: добыча угля или нефти, производство химикатов и т.д. А вот придя в больницу, хочется побеседовать с квалифицированным врачом, который тебя выслушает и скажет доброе слово. И произведениями искусства хочется наслаждаться теми, которые созданы людьми, а не бездушными машинами.
My Robot
I have got a robot. Its name is Robert, or Rob for short.
My robot has got a silver-grey head, arms and legs. Its body and hands are white. It hasn’t got any feet. He has got small wheels instead. Rob isn’t very tall, but its arms can reach even the highest shelves in our home.
Rob can understand our speech and respond our commands. It helps us save a lot of time because it does the housework. Rob can wash the dishes, clean the rooms, vacuum rugs and carpets and serve food.
Rob also plays games with me and helps me to study. So my robot is a great helper!

У меня есть робот. Его зовут Роберт или Роб, если коротко.
У моего робота серебристо-серые голова, руки и ноги. Его тело и руки белые. У него нет ног. Вместо них у него маленькие колесики. Роб не очень высокий, но его руки могут дотянуться даже до самых высоких полок в нашем доме.

Robots are mechanical helpers of humans, that are capable to perform operations, according to the program installed in them. Nowadays, due to the scientific-technical progress, the elaboration of robots can significantly change human’s way of life.
I think that no one could describe the future without robots (and particularly — androids), if they were asked to. And this is clear, cause even now we can see production prototypes, that demonstrate the achievements of scientists and engineers in this field.
And although, there are still a lot of problems to be resolved, I think we can already say with confidence that in the next 20 years better and cheaper technologies will appear in this field, that will lead to the creation of a market of robots of different functional purpose and difficulty level. This means that the androids (and other robots) will live and work among us, entertaining us and helping us in our everyday physical and intellectual labor.
Like in the American cartoon «Futurama» that shows the Earth in 3000 year. People and robots live there jointly. Of course, it’s just a fable, and robots there are kind of animated (they really have soul or mind, like people), but it’s really interesting point, cause sometimes, in the cartoon, they sort of overact and put themselves on the same level with people or even higher. It can really lead to thinking that robots will rule the world!
Sooner or later, robots will become an integral part of our everyday life, like computers or mobile phones. On the other hand, the level of development of robots depends on perfection in areas such as, for example, human speech recognition or artificial intelligence, and they have not had significant progress for several years. Until the experts of this field will not find a new paradigm, robots won’t learn to perform complex integrated actions. But to bring slippers or to vacuum the room – they can do entirely. Actually robot cleaners are very popular right now. So, the future is for robotics, but it will take a few decades.

We live in the 21st century and the phenomenon of robots in our lives, we are familiar and not a wonder. If earlier, 50 years ago, robots were something supernatural, and notes about them could be read only on the pages of science fiction books and magazines, now robots are not news, and are found everywhere. We will not go into technical details, but note that the robot is an automatic device created on the principle of a living organism, programmed for a particular action. Moreover, the robot can perform the action, as receiving commands from a person, and not receiving.
On the one hand, the robot in our time is a very useful thing, it is thanks to them, people make their lives easier. Take a simple example, computational robotics. It is not necessary for 9-10 hours a day to suffer, trying to calculate a particular task, citing certain arguments, sweating over the papers, and as a result zero. Now we have robots that just need to be programmed to solve the problem, set all the variables, and they will calculate the answer. If you imagine all this in a simplified way, it is akin to a calculator – you enter the data, and for you all do. Robots often perform difficult or even impossible tasks for humans.
