Sergey Lazarev: biography

Sergey Lazarev is a popular Russian singer, who performs songs both in English and Russian. He performed in the musical duet »Smash!!» and also as a solo artist. Sergey hosted entertainment programmes »New Wave», »The Song of the year» and »Dance!». He won in the TV show »Сircus of the stars».

Sergey Lazarev was born in Moscow in the family of Valentina Viktorovna Lazareva and Vyacheslav Yurievich Lazarev. He was the second child in his family, his elder brother Pavel was 5 years older than he. After some years his parents divorced and he didn’t see his father until he became famous. In his early childhood, the boy did gymnastics in children sports club. But when he was 9 he got bored of sporting competitions and he shifted to music and theatre.

During two years Sergey and his brother were participants of the folk trope of Vladimir Loktev. Alongside this activity, Sergey attended acting classes at the studio in the theater of Boris Pokrovskiy. Sergey frequently performed at the stage of this theater.

Being 12 years, Sergey Lazarev joined a famous children ensemble »Neposedi», due to which he participated in various musical contests and TV shows. Sergey completed primary school #389 in Moscow and then continued his studies at school #1061. Later, director of this school created a museum here, dedicated to Sergey Lazarev. The boy was a very active and hard-working pupil, the leader of the class and the captain of the scholar KVN («Club of the Funny and Inventive People») team.

After receiving school-leaving certificate, Sergey entered Moscow Art Theater School, where he studied at the theatre workshop with Roman Efimovich Kozak directing it. At the second year of studies, Sergey became a member of the Pushkin Drama Theater troupe. Here he acted in the plays »Romeo and Juliette», »The Marriage of Figaro», »Lend Me A Tenor» and »Talent and the dead». Also, he played the character of Alyosha Karamazov in the stage play »A few days of the life of Alyosha Karamazov» of Moscow Art Theater School.

As a drama artist, Lazarev was recognized by professional critics, so that he got the awards of Oleg Tabakov Foundation, »Chaika» dramatic debut and »Crystal Turandot».

In «Smash!!»

Sergey Lazarev and his friend Vlad Topalov had an idea of creating a musical band since their activity in children group »Neposedi». In 2000 guys recorded songs of this ensemble at the recording studio, because father of Vlad Topalov decided to release an album to the 10th anniversary of this group.

At the same time, Sergey and Vlad recorded the ballade in French language »Belle», which was heard for the first time in the world-famous musical »Notre Dame de Paris».

This version of the famous song was of great demand in Russia and its success inspired guys to create the band »Smash!!». The same year Lazarev and Topalov concluded the first professional contract with the recording studio »Universal Music Group». In spring 2002 the duet took part in the popular song contest »New Wave» and won it.

After this, guys concentrated on the recording of their own songs. At first, they released a promo-single »Should have loved you more» and a video for this song. In 2003 they released the full-length album »Freeway», which became the platinum record in a short time. It’s curious, that this album brought them fame not only in Russia but also in many other countries of CIS and South-East Asia.

In the end of 2004 the second and last album »2nite» was brought to light. Almost immediately after releasing this album, Sergey Lazarev announced the fans about his leaving from the band.

Solo career

Sergey Lazarev recorded his solo debut »Don’t Be Fake» at the recording studios Rive Droite and Metrophonic situated in London. He released this album in December 2005. His disc was sold in more than 200 000 copies and became famous quickly enough.

This album includes 12 English songs, three of which became hits and stayed on the charts for a long time. These were the following songs »Eye of the Storm», »Fake» and »Lost without Your Love».

Next year Lazarev recorded the song »Just Because You Walk Away» from this album in a new version in Russian under the title »Daje Esli Ty Uydiosh», which became one of the most popular songs in 2006. Moreover, at the end of the same year singer was called the best performer at MTV Russia Music Awards ceremony.

The second album »TV Show» was released in spring 2007. The disc was recorded in England and Norway and included 12 new English songs; a Russian version of the song »Everytime» and a couple of remixes.

The songs »Everytime» (»Vspominay»), »Shattered Dreams», »Girlfriend» and a separately released single »Zachem Pridumali Lyubov» became the most famous songs of this album. Music for the latter song was taken from the ballade »Almost Sorry», though Russian text was not a literary translation of the main song and was written additionally.

His fans had to wait for the new album for 3 years. The album »Electric Touch» included 14 songs, one of which was performed in Russian language. This album came in demand very quickly and, as a result, became a golden disk.

The songs »Naydi menya», »Lazerboy», »Stereo» and Russian version of the song »Heartbeat» under the title »Bienie serdca» became the best songs of this album.

The song »When You Tell Me That You Love Me», which he sang in a duet with Ukrainian singer Ani Lorak, was performed by them at the musical festival »New Wave». The song mentioned above and also a song »Moscow to California», recorded together with Timati and DJ MEG were released as separate singles. The video for the last song with Timati, filmed in Moscow and California, entered the final MTV TOP-20.

The fourth studio album »Lazarev.» was released in December 2012. This album became a golden disk, as the previous one. It’s interesting, that before the disc appeared in shops, it was possible to buy and download its online version in iTunes Store.

The songs »Unreal love», »Take It Off» and »Stumblin’» were of the greatest interest. Also, the composition »Cure the Thunder», recorded in duet with the American hip-hop singer T Pain, became a hit. It was included in the extended album version together with the Russian version of the songs »Tears In My Heart» and »Into The Heart».

On his 32-nd birthday, Sergey Lazarev presented the collection of his best songs in »The Best (Russian Edition) ». This edition included his most popular songs in Russian. In autumn of the same year, he released the similar edition of is English songs and included a new composition »Hard To Love».

In 2016 Sergey Lazarev presented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest at Sweden with the song »You Are the Only One», composed by Philipp Kirkorov.

In the final, Sergey reached the 3-rd place. This happened because of the innovation of the contest in 2016 – the voting was held by the professional jury, who put Sergey Lazarev at lower positions. Meanwhile, the spectators decided, that Russian singer was worth the 1-st place. However, in total, Lazarev managed to gain »bronze», giving up to Australian singer Dami Im and to the final winner Jamala, the representative from Ukraine.

Films and TV

In 1996 Lazarev became the winner of the TV children talent show »Morning Star». In 2007 Sergey Lazarev took part in the first season of the entertaining TV-show »Circus of the Stars» and won in it. The same year he took the second place in the dancing show »Dancing on ice».

The singer hosted the following TV programmes: »Dance!», »New Wave», »The Best Song of the Year», »Maydans». Also, he was a coach in the musical project »I want to get to Meladze» and in the Ukrainian show »The Voice».

Also, Sergey tried himself in voicing-over the movies. He voiced-over Troy Bolton in all parts of the musical TV movie »High School Musical», Arthur, the heir to the throne, in Russian version of the animated series »Shrek the Third» and Omega wolf Humphrey in the animated movie »Alpha and Omega».

Personal life

Since 2008 Sergey Lazarev dated popular TV host Lera Kudryavtseva, who was 12 years older than he. They separated at the end of 2012, but they stayed good friends. Later he was seen with the Ukrainian singer Santa Dimopulos.

During autumn 2015 in one of his interviews, a young man told, that he had a beloved girlfriend. He didn’t call her name and only mentioned, that she was related to show business.

In spring 2015 his elder brother Pavel, with whom Sergey was very close, lost his life in a car crash.

In December 2016 journalists announced that Sergey Lazarev concealed the fact of the birth of his son Nikita for 2,5 years. The singer was captured by paparazzi when he was attending church with his mother and his little son. Friends and closest friends of the singer admitted, that he really has a son, but he concealed his private life thoroughly because it only concerned his family. Nothing is known about Nikita’s mother.

Sergey Vyacheslavovich Lazarev (Серге́й Вячеславович Лазарев) is a singer, dancer and actor born in Moscow, Russia. He is most famous for his singing career, when he rose to fame as the dark-haired member of the group Smash!!. The group broke up in 2006. Since then Lazarev has pursued a solo career.

Biography and career

Early life and child stardom

From the age six to nine Sergey Lazarev went in for artistic gymnastics. Lazarev began his acting and singing career before the age of 10, singing in the Lokteus Children Choir. At the age of 14, he had already received his first musical award, won several children’s song contests, and ended up as a member of child group Neposedi (Непоседы), the same group in which Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina of t.A.T.u. met each other. Also his friend Vlad Topalov (Влад Топалов) joined the group, who later would become the other half of the group Smash!!.

When he was eleven, he sang in the Pokrovsky Theatre, had parts in many plays. In 1995, at the age of 12, Sergey entered the fidgets band, the same year he won the TV contest of children’s gold key. As a part of the fidgets group Sergey took part in famous Russian TV programs and contests, such as «Guess the Tune», «Grasp Me», «The Morning Star», «Look Out», «The Blue Light» and «The Slaconic Bazaar». In September 1996 Sergey won the first prize at the contest Bravo Bravissimo in Italy. The same year he sang with the president orchestra led by P. Ovsyannikov.

Acting

In 2000, Sergey entered Moscow’s famous Mkhat Theatre School and graduated in 2004 as a professional actor. In 1999 Sergey entered the Russian leading dramatic Institute, the school-studio MAAT, and graduated from in with honors in 2003. As a student, Sergey played the main parts in Pushkinski Theatre’s productions of Romeo and Juliet, and Karamazov. For his role as Romeo, he was nominated for a «Seagull» dramatic debut award for the «Best Love Scene».

In 2005 he returned to the theatre scene. His part in the 2005 Broadway-style musical comedy Lend Me A Tenor brought him five professional theater awards, making the play the biggest success of the 2005 theatre season.

Smash!!

In 2001 Sergey and Vlad Topalov started the boy band Smash!!. Shortly after they were signed by Universal Music Records in Russia and were one of the biggest Russian pop groups in 2002–2003. The duo had five #1 hits, numerous awards and sold millions of records in Russia, CIS and East Asia (including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand) during their brief career as a group.

At the beginning of 2002 the duo shot their first video clip for the song «Should Have Loved You More». That August Smash!! won the ‘New Wave’ contest in Jūrmala and in October 2002 Smash!! released their first single «Belle». The video for «Belle» topped MTV Russia’s chart for 6 months and entered the list of top 20 clips of the past five years. The story behind this song tells about the formation of the duo Smash!!, apparently Vlad and Sergey rehearsed the song as a birthday present to Vlad’s father, but after he heard the song he immediately told all his friends and ended up on the radio as one of his friends started playing at a local station.

In February 2003 the band finally released their debut album, Freeway. Over a million discs were sold in Russia and other nations in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Smash!! subsequently toured Russia throughout 2003.

The following year Freeway was released in East Asian countries including; Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines. The release of the album was followed by the promotional tour in the South-Eastern Asia, during which the band shot a video clip for the cover-version of George Michael’s song «Faith» in Shanghai.

In May 2004 Smash!! in cooperation with the Italian band Earphones recorded the song «Obsession». When the song entered the radio rotation, it immediately gained the top of hit parades and became the top summer hit 2004. That year Smash!! received the award of the MTV Russian Music Awards (RMA in short) 2004 as the pop-project of the year, and the award of the sound-track as the band of the year.

On December 1, 2004 Smash!! released the second album, 2Nite. The band split up only one week after the release, resulting both Sergey Lazarev and Vlad Topalov pursuing solo careers.

Solo career

Together with British producer Brian Rawling, Sergey recorded most of the songs for his solo debut Don’t Be Fake that was released in November 2005 and sold more than 300,000 copies in Russia alone. In May 2006 Sergey received Russia’s national Music TV Channel’s MUZ TV award as Best New Act. The fourth single from the album «Fake» was released to clubs in the UK, debuting on July 30 at #28 on the commercial club chart in Music Week.

Don’t be Fakes first two singles, «Eye Of The Storm» and «Lost Without Your Love», were soon released. The video clips of these singles were shot in Miami and South Africa, respectively.

The third single «Daje Esli Ty Uydiosh (Даже Если Ты Уйдёшь)» («Just Because You Walk Away» in English) became the biggest single from the album, peaking at #1 for many weeks, remaining on the charts for over six months, coming back to the charts twice more, and eventually reaching #2 in the annual airplay chart of most played songs in 2006. Due to the massive popularity of the song, the album was re-issued with bonus tracks including 3 versions of the song—the English version (which can be found on the first issue), the Russian version, and a dance remix also sung in Russian. Sergey also performed the song at the MTV Russia Awards. The single was written by U.S. songwriter Gordon Pogoda and Australian writer/artist John Stephan.

The fourth single, «Fake», was plugged and the video clip was shot in London. Meanwhile the Fake Remixes EP was published. This was also promoted to some clubs in UK.

After the success of his first album, Sergey went to the studio and recorded a new Album TV Show The video for the lead single, «Vspominay (Вспоминай)» was shot in Moscow. The English version of the song, «Everytime», was soon released along with the video clip, this one being similar to the Russian version.

Sergey did a cover of «Shattered Dreams», originally sung by Johnny Hates Jazz. This was the second single of the album and the first international single for Sergey. The video clip was said to be shot in Canada. In fact, a close examination of the video for the song reveals shots of Toronto landmarks (including Yonge-Dundas Square and the neon sign in front of the now closed-down Sam the Record Man) and even a Toronto Transit Commission bus.

The same year, Sergey won the Best Male Singer award in RMA 2006, defeating Dima Bilan. During the ceremony, Vlad and Sergey got together and sang «Belle» for the first time in years, ending the performance with a hug from the two former best friends.

TV Show (album) was published in Europe in 2007. This was a theme-album talking about TV shows and reality by mostly love ballads. «Shattered Dreams» was in this album together with 11 other tracks, including «TV or Radio» his third single and «Girlfriend» his fourth single of this album. His single Shattered Dreams was released in the UK later and currently available on some online music stores.

In 2008, he tried to represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song «Flyer», but came 4th place, losing to Russian pop star Dima Bilan.

He performed to full-capacity crowds at The Opera House in Bournemouth, England on 23 March 2008. He was supporting UK dance group Booty Luv.

In 2008 Sergey won MTV’s Artist of the Year Award. Consequently releasing the video of the Russian version of the song «Almost Sorry», (Зачем придумали любовь) this one being the fifth and last single of the album. Songwriters of the Russian version (Chris Landon, Taryn Murphy, Lara D’elia).

In 2009 Sergey collaborated with artist Timati and made a video of the song «Lazerboy». In April 2009 Sergey promoted «Stereo», the lead single for his third solo album and sang «Already Know» and «Out of Control». All four songs were expected to appear on his upcoming album, but only «Lazerboy» made the cut.

On 31 March 2010 Electric Touch was released in Russian music stores.

The video for «Alarm» was released on May 10.

On June 26 it was confirmed the song «Feeling High» was the new single from Electric Touch.

In 2012, he released «Take It Off», yet another English-language song, possible hinting at another future return to attempts to break into the main European market, or participation in future Eurovision Song Contests.

Other appearances

In 2006 Sergey took part in Russia’s «Dancing on Ice», coming in 2nd. In 2008 he appeared in the reality «Circus of the Stars» winning the first place for his performance.

Детство и юность

Сергей родился в первый апрельский день 1983 года в Москве в семье Валентины Викторовны и Вячеслава Юрьевича Лазаревых и стал вторым ребенком: брат Павел на 5 лет старше. Могла бы быть еще и сестра, но девочка погибла при родах. Еще через 5 лет родители развелись, дети остались с матерью, и до тех пор, пока к нему не пришла известность, Сергей отца практически не видел.

В раннем детстве мальчик занимался гимнастикой в спортивной секции, но в 9 лет это ему надоело, поэтому он переключился на музыку и театр. Два года Сережа с братом были участниками детского ансамбля песни и пляски имени Владимира Локтева, а параллельно он занимался актерским мастерством в студии при театре Бориса Покровского, на сцене которого и выступал.

Группа Smash!!

После этого парни сосредоточились на записи собственных песен. Сначала был издан промосингл Should have loved you more, затем снят видеоклип. А в 2003 году вышел полноформатный альбом Freeway, который в кратчайшие сроки стал платиновым и сделал Smash!! узнаваемым не только в России, но и в странах СНГ и даже в Юго-Восточной Азии.

Сольная карьера

Свой дебютный сольный альбом Don’t Be Fake, который записывался на лондонских студиях звукозаписи Rive Droite и Metrophonic, Сергей Лазарев выпустил в декабре 2005 года. Пластинка разошлась тиражом более 200 тыс. экземпляров. Альбом содержал 12 англоязычных композиций, 3 из которых стали хитами и на долгое время задержались в чартах.

Сергей Лазарев работал на пределе своих возможностей, поэтому при подготовке к международному конкурсу организм певца дал сбой. Во время концерта в Санкт-Петербурге, произнося слова приветствия, артист неожиданно упал в обморок. В первые минуты публика подумала, что падение – запланированный сценический ход, но вскоре к лежащему Сергею подбежали сотрудники зала и увели артиста со сцены.

Программа была сорвана. Организаторы решили не рисковать здоровьем певца и отменили еще один концерт в Таллине. Позднее Лазарев публично попросил у зрителей прощения за перенос выступлений.

Singer and actor Sergey Lazarev started his career when he was younger than 10, singing in Lokteus Children Choir. From this point on, music has never stopped being the most important thing in his life.

When he was 14, he was already receiving his first musical award, won in several children’s song contests, and ended up in a very popular Neposedi (Непоседы), same band where Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina of t.A.T.u met each other, and also his cousin and former partner, Vlad Topalov(Влад Топалов). In 2000, Sergey entered Moscow famous Mkhat Theatre School and graduated in 2004 as a professional actor.

Sergey began to record his solo album in 2005, also coming back to theatre scene which he left in 2003 because of bands packed schedule. Together with British producer Brian Rawling, Sergey recorded most of the songs for his debut Don’t Be Fake that was released in November 2005 and sold instantly more than 300 000 copies in Russia alone. As for theatre life, his part in Broadway-style musical comedy borrow a tenor brought him 5 professional theater awards, making the play biggest succeed of 2005 theatre season.

The same year the Pushkin Theatre staged the play Romeo and Juliet where Sergey played the part of Romeo. Every performance with Sergey attracted the full house;

In February 2003 the band released the long-expected first album Freeway (that is sold all over the world later), that practically at once obtained the status of a gold record. Over a million of licensed discs were sold, and each single of the album was on top of hit parades both in Russian and other CIS countries;

In March 2003 Smash!! shot the third video clip for Talk To Me (also the first single plugged in Hong Kong);

In April 2003 the duet started on a concert tour to promote the album Freeway (Hong Kong was one of the promoting place and Smash!! performed with gaining lots of attentions from fans); In September 2003 Smash!! shot the forth video clip for the song Freeway;

On November 11-12, 2003 Smash!! held their first solo concerts in Moscow;

In 2003 Smash!! received many awards as the best band namely the MUZ TV awards discovery of the year, the awards Euro-hit of the Europe-plus radio station, and gold gramophone, weighty hit, love radio, and sound-track;

In 2003 Segey Lazarev played the part of Aleksey Kaeamazov in the play few days of Alesha Karamazous life in the A. Chekhow MAAT;

The same year he was nominated for the dramatic awards seagull for the best love scene in the play Romeo and Juliet and for the dramatic award debut, therefore he was listed among ten most successful young Moscow actors;

In 2004 the Smash!! duet began to record their second album;

In May 2004 Smash!! in cooperation with the Italian band Earphones recorded the song Obsession. When the song entered the radio rotation, it immediately gained the top of hit parades and became the top summer hit 2004;

Simultaneously, the band’s first album Freeway was released in the South-Eastern Asia (in Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and on Philippines). The album at once occupied the top lines of musical hot parades;

The release of the album was followed by the promotion tour in the South-Eastern Asia, during which the band shot a video clip for the cover-version of George Michael’s song Faith in Shanghai. Also, they shot an episode of teleplay in Hong Kong and acted as volley players from Russia;

In September, 2004 the single Obsession was released in India;

In 2004, Smash!! received the award of the MTV Russian Music Awards (RMA in short) 2004 as the pop-project of the year, and the award of the sound-track as the band of the year;

On December 1, 2004 Smash!! released the second album, 2nite.

After the releasing of 2nite, Sergey goes solo.

There were different hearsays about why he goes solo. Most of his fans think that Vlad’s father (Smash!!’s manager) did not want Sergey to be popular as Sergey sings better. He worried Vlad would not be as popular as Sergey. Therefore, he did something bad to Sergey, defame him, humiliated him and some more. Fans believe this hearsay because Vlad’s father finally apologized.

At the very beginning, Sergey’s life of being a soloist is not easy. Almost all the media banned him. Whatever he did cannot change this poor situation. Luckily, his fans have done a lot to back up him to return to the stage and eventually he did it. Again, fans think that Vlad’s father was doing something behind.

Singles Eye of the Storm and Lost without Your Love were soon released. Once again, Vlad’s father said that one of them were in the song list for Smash!! and had made such an embarrassing situation. And the video clips of these singles were shot in Miami and South Africa.

Album Don’t Be Fake was later published in Russia, Ukraine and Poland.
The third single Fake was plugged and the video clip was shot in London. Meanwhile the Fake Remixes was published. This was also promoted to some clubs in UK.
The forth single, Vspominaij (Вспоминай) was released and it is not included in the last album. This is the first song in Russian that he plugged. The video clip was shot in Moscow. The English version of the song, Everytime, was soon released after Shattered Dreams was plugged. The video clip for this song was similar to the Russian version. There were only a few differences in between.

Sergey re-sang a classic of Johnny Hates Jazz, Shattered Dreams, as the next single. This was the first international single on Sergey’s own. The video clip was told to be shot in Canada.

For this year, Sergey won the Best Male Singer from all the others including the winner last year, Dima Bilan (Дима Билан) in RMA 2006. This admitted his hard-working for being a music performer. In the prize giving ceremony, Vlad and he reunion and sang their old song Belle together with a hug in ending. Also, he won some awards for his opera acting and the sexy award.

Sergey was once gossiped that he is the daddy of Yulia’s daughter Vika. And some people thought that they were a couple. But he has stated that Yulia is his close friend. Finally, people were told that Pasha was Vika’s father. The video for ‘Shattered Dreams’ was conceptualized by UK director Andy Hylton. It was shot in Toronto Canada.

Album TV SHOW was published in Europe in 2007. This was a theme-album talking about TV shows and reality by mostly love ballads. Shattered Dreams was in this album together with 11 other songs like Everytime and so on.

Sergey Vyacheslavovich Lazarev (Russian: Серге́й Вячесла́вович Ла́зарев, IPA: [sʲɪrˈɡʲej vʲɪtɕɪˈslavəvʲɪtɕ ˈlazərʲɪf]; born 1 April 1983) is a Russian singer, dancer and actor. He is most famous for his singing career, when he rose to fame as a member of the group Smash!!. The group broke up in 2006. Since then Lazarev has pursued a solo career. He represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, and finished in third place, coming first in the televote.^[1] He represented Russia again at Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel with the song «Scream», and similarly finished in third place. In January 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Lazarev for his support of 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.^[2][3]

Early life and child stardomEdit

Lazarev was born in Moscow on 1 April 1983.^[4] From age of four, Lazarev practiced artistic gymnastics, but stopped due to his parents’ divorce.^[5] Subsequently, Lazarev started singing in a children’s choir and became interested in performing.

Lazarev got to know about Neposedy’s existence merely by accident. A shopkeeper recommended Lazarev to apply for Neposedy while Lazarev was buying bread.^[6] In 1995, he became part of the children’s group alongside Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. With Neposedy he regularly performed at the Russian television show Morning Star and in 1996, he performed at a concert at the Slavianski Bazaar.^[7][8] In September 1996 Lazarev won the first prize at the contest Bravo Bravissimo in Italy. The same year he sang with the president orchestra led by Pavel B. Ovsyannikov.^[9]

Next to singing, Lazarev worked as a child actor. When he was eleven, he performed in the Pokrovsky Theatre and had parts in several plays.^[10] Lazarev also appeared in children’s sketch comedy programme Yeralash in 1997^[11]

In 2000, Lazarev entered Moscow’s MKhAT Theatre School and graduated in 2004 as a professional actor. In 1999 he enrolled at Russia’s leading dramatic institute, the school-studio MAAT, and graduated with honors in 2003. As a student, Lazarev played the main parts in Pushkin Theatre’s productions of Romeo and Juliet, and Karamazov. For his role as Romeo, he was nominated for a «Seagull» dramatic debut award for the «Best Love Scene».

In 2005 he returned to the theatre scene. His part in the 2005 Broadway-style musical comedy Lend Me A Tenor brought him five professional theater awards, making the play the biggest success of the 2005 theatre season.

In Smash!!Edit

Lazarev’s music career blossomed when he became part of Smash!! (in Russian СМЭШ!!), a Russian pop duo formed in 2000 by Lazarev and fellow former Neposedy singer Vlad Topalov. At the beginning of 2002 the duo shot their first music video for the song «Should Have Loved You More». That August, Smash!! won the New Wave contest in Jūrmala and in October 2002 Smash!! released their first single «Belle». The video for «Belle» topped MTV Russia’s chart for 6 months and entered the list of top 20 clips of the past five years. The story behind this song tells about the formation of the duo Smash!!, apparently Topalov and Lazarev rehearsed the song as a birthday present to Topalov’s father, but after he heard the song he immediately told all his friends and ended up on the radio as one of his friends started playing at a local station.

In February 2003 the band finally released their debut album, Freeway. Over a million discs were sold in Russia and other nations in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Smash!! subsequently toured Russia throughout 2003.

The following year Freeway was released in East Asian countries including; Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines. The release of the album was followed by the promotional tour in the South-Eastern Asia, during which the band shot a video clip for the cover-version of George Michael’s song «Faith» in Shanghai.

Solo careerEdit

Together with British producer Brian Rawling, Lazarev recorded most of the songs for his solo debut Don’t Be Fake that was released in November 2005 and sold more than 300,000 copies in Russia alone. In May 2006 Lazarev received Russia’s national Music TV Channel’s MUZ TV award as Best New Act. The fourth single from the album «Fake» was released to clubs in the UK, debuting on 30 July at #28 on the commercial club chart in Music Week.

Don’t be Fake’s first two singles, «Eye of the Storm» and «Lost Without Your Love», were soon released. The video clips of these singles were shot in Miami and South Africa, respectively. The third single «Daje Esli Ty Uydiosh (Даже Если Ты Уйдёшь)» («Just Because You Walk Away» in English) became the biggest single from the album, peaking at #1 for many weeks, remaining on the charts for over six months, coming back to the charts twice more, and eventually reaching #2 in the annual airplay chart of most played songs in 2006. Due to the massive popularity of the song, the album was re-issued with bonus tracks including 3 versions of the song—the English version (which can be found on the first issue), the Russian version, and a dance remix also sung in Russian. Lazarev also performed the song at the MTV Russia Awards. The single was written by American songwriter Gordon Pogoda and Australian writer/artist John Stephan. The fourth single, «Fake», was plugged and the video clip was shot in London. Meanwhile, the Fake Remixes EP was published. This was also promoted to some clubs in the United Kingdom.

After the success of his first album, Lazarev went to the studio and recorded a new album TV Show The video for the lead single, «Vspominay (Вспоминай)» was shot in Moscow. The English version of the song, «Everytime», was soon released along with the video clip, this one being similar to the Russian version. Lazarev recorded a cover of «Shattered Dreams», originally sung by Johnny Hates Jazz. This was the second single of the album and the first international single for Lazarev. The video was said to be shot in Canada.

The same year, Lazarev won the Best Male Singer award in RMA 2006, defeating Dima Bilan. During the ceremony, Topalov and Lazarev got together and sang «Belle» for the first time in years, ending the performance with a hug from the two former best friends. TV Show was released in Europe in 2007. This was a theme-album talking about TV shows and reality by mostly love ballads. «Shattered Dreams» was on this album together with 11 other tracks, including «TV or Radio» his third single and «Girlfriend» his fourth single of this album. His single «Shattered Dreams» was eventually released in the United Kingdom as well.

In 2008, he was a candidate to represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song «the Flyer». He finished fourth in Russia’s national final, which was won by Dima Bilan. As his international fame rose, he performed to full-capacity crowds at The Opera House in Bournemouth, England on 23 March 2008^[13] as a supporting act to British dance group Booty Luv. Also in 2008, Lazarev won MTV’s Artist of the Year Award. Consequently, releasing the video of the Russian version of the song «Almost Sorry», («Зачем придумали любовь») this one being the fifth and last single of the album. Songwriters of the Russian version were Chris Landon, Taryn Murphy and Lara D’elia.

In 2009 Lazarev collaborated with artist Timati and made a video of the song «Lazerboy». In April 2009 Lazarev promoted «Stereo», the lead single for his third solo album and sang «Already Know» and «Out of Control». All four songs were expected to appear on his upcoming album, but only «Lazerboy» made the cut.

On 31 March 2010 Electric Touch was released in Russian music stores. The video for «Alarm» was released on 10 May and on 26 June it was confirmed the song «Feeling High» was the new single from Electric Touch.^[14]

In 2012, Lazarev released another English-language song, «Take It Off».

On 10 December 2015, it was announced that Lazarev would represent Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm.^[15] In the final, he reached third place with his song «You Are the Only One», Lazarev won the televote with 361 points, and came fifth with the national jury scoring 130 points.^[16] It was rumoured that in the 2017 contest, which Russia ultimately withdrew from, Lazarev was originally intended to be Russia’s spokesperson during the jury voting sequence.

On February 7, Lazarev announced that he would represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel with the song «Scream». He again finished third in the final, with 370 points.

Political viewsEdit

In 2014, following the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation and during his stay in Ukraine, Lazarev stated to Ukrainian television, «Maybe my own Russian fans will throw tomatoes at me, but this is the way it is for me. When I travel to Yalta, for me it’s Ukraine.» However, in his later comments on Ukrainian television the singer said that his words had been taken out of context.^[17] Lazarev explained that in fact he meant that the territorial change was so instant that he could not get used to the idea that Crimea was part of Russia again and «need[ed] time to realize it»; the singer compared it to the feeling of those who remember the transfer of Crimea from Russia to Ukraine in 1954: «I perfectly understand those who, in 1954, suddenly woke up in Ukraine, and who wanted Crimea to return to Russia. I know, many are happy with that. But I need time to realize that». Lazarev claimed the recording of his speech was shortened and edited by the Ukrainian TV crew for use in an «anti-Russian» an information war.^[18]

In January 2023 Ukraine imposed sanctions on Sergey Lazarev for promoting Russia during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.^[2][3]

Personal lifeEdit

In December 2016, he announced that he has a two-year-old son, Nikita, after pictures of both attending church were captured by paparazzi.^[19] Nikita was later featured in Lazarev’s music video for «Так красиво» in 2017.^[20] In September 2019, during an interview with Lera Kudryavtseva, Sergey disclosed having a one-year-old daughter, Anya, with the same biological mother as Nikita but born from a different surrogate mother. This was also the first confirmation of Nikita having been born via surrogate.^[21]

Sergey Lazarev (born Sergey Vyacheslavovich Lazarev in Moscow, Russia) spent his youth practicing gymnastics and acting, graduating from Mkhat Theater School in 2004, but it was his vocal abilities that shot him to fame in his home country. As a member of child group Neposedi (who also counted t.A.T.u. among its ranks), Lazarev joined with friend Vlad Topalov and formed teen pop duo Smash!! in 2000. They released their debut album, Freeway, in 2003, which included the Russian chart-topper «Belle.» They were a hit in Russian-speaking nations and East Asia, touring Southeast Asia in 2004. Despite their success, they split up in 2004 to pursue solo careers, a mere week after releasing follow-up effort 2nite. Lazarev’s debut, Don’t Be Fake, was released in late 2005. Full of dramatic pop, Euro-dance bangers, and huge ballads, it was a hit. His sophomore effort, TV Show, was released in 2007, followed by Electric Touch in 2010. With each successive album, the beats got bigger and the hits continued to roll on. In an attempt to further break into the English-speaking market, he even had T-Pain guest on his fourth album, 2013’s self-titled Lazarev.
