St.Paul’s School
I also A32 _______ going to St. Paul’s School at the age of eleven.
- review
- remind
- remember
- repeat
- remind smb about smth — напоминать о чем-то
- remind smb to do smth — напоминать кому-то сделать что-то
At my prep school I was top in almost every subject without having to do much more than any other child, and A33 _______ I was called “swot” or “swotty”, it never worried me.
- however
- although
- therefore
- nevertheless
At St. Paul’s there turned A24 _______ to be several boys who were clever, but none of them could touch me when it came to maths.
- over
- off
- in
- out
Ответ: out
I couldn’t wait for the next algebraic equation, a further geometric puzzle or the challenge of solving an arithmetic test in my head while others in the form sucked their pencils as they A35 _______ pages of figures.
- reflected
- thought
- considered
- judged
I couldn’t wait for the next algebraic equation, a further geometric puzzle or the challenge of solving an arithmetic test in my head while others in the form sucked their pencils as they A35 _______ pages of figures.
…but my form master A36 _______ none of this was important because I was obviously going to be a mathematician for the rest of my life.
- spoke
- said
- talked
- told
Ответ: said
Mum had gone to London University, but she A37 _______ had to work to keep Dad “in the style to which he’d become accustomed.”
- still
- even
- just
- so
still — все еще
even — даже
so — так, поэтому
Mum had gone to London University, but she A37 _______ had to work to keep Dad “in the style to which he’d become accustomed.”
Ответ: still
Or that’s what I A38 _______ to hear Mum telling him at breakfast from time to time.
- held
- used
- kept
- made
Ответ: used

My Childhood |
In my opinion, childhood should be the happiest time in every person’s life. My childhood was happy and memorable. I remember almost every event from that time. Sometimes I wish I could turn back the time and stay there a little but more. It was the world of fairy-tales and magic. |
My parents did their best to make me feel happy. My dad would always take me to the Amusement Park, buy me sweets and ice-cream. My mum used to read me bedtime stories and play different games with me. At that time we lived with my grandparents. They also spent lots of time with me. My grandpa, for example, took me once fishing with him. That was fun. My grandma cooked amazing dishes. I especially liked her ginger cookies. |
As we lived in a large two-storey house with a garden, we kept a lot of domestic animals. We had a large German shepherd, two cats, a parrot and lots of chicken. As far as I remember, the parrot was the funniest of all. It could copy everything that was said around and it certainly sounded funny. |
Our garden was always full of flowers in spring and summer time. We also had some apple and cherry trees. |
A little later, when I turned four, my brother was born. I liked him very much and helped my mother in every way. I played with him, fed him, sang songs for him. I was quite happy. From now on we took him everywhere with us. We often went for a walk in the nearest park or visited our relatives. |
It was a magic time full of surprises and presents. One Christmas Santa brought me a sewing machine of my dreams and a toy car for my brother. I think this moment will stay forever in my memory. |

SWEET MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD
Sweet are the memories of my childhood days. These memories fill my heart with joy. I still remember those wonderful days. I look back; I recollect the love and affection of my parents and younger brother.
I still remember the bed time stories which my grand mother and my father told me they told me the stories of “Akbar and Birbal”, “God’s Miracles” etc. some time they explained the rules of society at that time my mother was very much angry on them. And asked them why did you put much burden of society’s rules on her? She is a very small girl. Let her live freely in her childhood. At that time I became sad, because my mother quarreled with them. After that my father told me the study of the fairy tales” because he always wanted to see me happy.
I love my Papa
My mother was my first teacher. She taught me the ABCD and numbers. While she working in the kitchen, she gave me spoons and glasses to count. That was my first lesson in simple arithmetic.
I remember the day when I first went to school. I was just four years old. I entered in the classroom, I saw all the students staring at me. I thought, some of them were making fun of me. I was very nervous. I sat alone on a bench in the middle of the classroom. I did not like to sit in the class therefore I went out of the class. And I sat under a tree in the playground and waited for my mother to take me home. I was a good student. I always stood first in my class. But I was more interested in drawing and other activities than learning lessons.
What a lovely time it was! I passed my days in care free manner. No worries tensions but just fun, joy, happiness and laughter.

FORM |
It happened at my private school thirty odd years ago, and I still can’t explain it. I came to that school in September and among the boys who arrived on the same day was one whom I took to. I will call him McLeod. The school was a large one: there must have been from 120 to 130 boys there as a rule, and so a considerable staff of masters was required. One term a new master made his appearance. His name was Sampson. He was a tall, well-built, pale, black-bearded man. I think we liked him. He had travelled a good deal, and had stories which amused us on our school walks, so that there was some competition among us to get a chance to listen to him.
Well, the first odd thing that happened was this. Sampson was doing Latin grammar with us. One of his favourite methods was to make us construct sentences out of our own heads to illustrate the rules he was trying to teach us. Now, on this occasion he ordered us each to make a sentence bringing in the verb memini, ‘I remember.’ Well, most of us made up some ordinary sentence such as ‘I remember my father,’ but the boy I mentioned — McLeod — was evidently thinking of something more interesting than that. Finally, very quickly he wrote a couple of lines on his paper, and showed it up with the rest. The phrase was “Remember the lake among the four oaks.” Later McLeod told me that it had just come into his head. When Sampson read it he got up and went to the mantel-piece and stopped quite a long time without saying anything looking really embarrassed. Then he wanted to know why McLeod had put it down, and where his family lived, and if there was such a lake there, and things like that.
There was one other incident of the same kind. We were told to make a conditional sentence, expressing a future consequence. We did it and showed up our bits of paper, and Sampson began looking through them. All at once he got up, made some odd sort of noise in his throat, and rushed out. I noticed that he hadn’t taken any of the papers with him, so we went to look at them on his desk. The top paper on the desk was written in red ink — which no one used — and it wasn’t in anyone’s handwriting who was in the class. I questioned everyone myself! Then I thought of counting the bits of paper: there were seventeen of them on the desk, and sixteen boys in the form. I put the extra paper in my bag and kept it. The phrase on it was simple and harmless enough: ‘If you don’t come to me, I’ll come to you.’ That same afternoon I took it out of my bag — I know for certain it was the same bit of paper, for I made a fingermark on it — and there was no single piece of writing on it!
The next day Sampson was in school again, much as usual. That night the third and last incident in my story happened. We — McLeod and I — slept in a bedroom the windows of which looked out at the main building of the school. Sampson slept in the main building on the first floor. At an hour which I can’t remember exactly, but some time between one and two, I was woken up by somebody shaking me. I saw McLeod in the light of the moon which was looking right into our windows. ‘Come,’ he said, — ‘come, there’s someone getting in through Sampson’s window. About five minutes before I woke you, I found myself looking out of this window here, and there was a man sitting on Sampson’s window-sill, and looking in.’ ‘What sort of man? Is anyone from the senior class going to play a trick on him? Or was it a burglar?!’ McLeod seemed unwilling to answer. ‘I don’t know,’ he said, ‘but I can tell you one thing — he was as thin as a rail, and water was running down his hair and clothing and,’ he said, looking round and whispering as if he hardly liked to hear himself, ‘I’m not at all sure that he was alive.’ Naturally I came and looked, and naturally there was no one there.
And next day Mr. Sampson was gone: not to be found, and I believe no trace of him has ever come to light since. Neither McLeod nor I ever mentioned what we had seen to anyone. We seemed unable to speak about it. We both felt strange horror which neither could explain.
