Sociologists have made a survey recently about how teenagers spend their money. They asked (250) teens from (14) to (18) about their daily allowance and spending habits. They found out that most of the teens get more money from their parents — about (7) pounds a week.

Teenagers have some pocket money, but still have their worries. Modern children tend to think more about the future and about such things as tuition money or rent when they’ll move out. So they practice saving money now, when they don’t really need it yet, and that’s wise. The survey showed that (14)-year-old kids save up a least a third of their cash and don’t squander it on useless things. Economic crisis taught them to be reasonable about their spending habits. And surely this means that these teenagers are mature and responsible already.

Children can get a bank card when they are over (14). It’s a great opportunity to learn how to deal with money, control spending and save. If the teenager has a part-time job, then he really needs his own bank account. In the UK children can’t have credit cards. Cheque book is allowed only if the person is over sixteen.

For teenagers the opportunity to use money as they see fit can be tempting in terms of buying strong drinks or cigarettes. So parents should still monitor how their underage son or daughter spends their cash, even if they already work, have their own bank account and relatively independent.

Пояснение.

38.1 People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. While doing a project on what motivates people in Zetland to do volunteering, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, 45% of the young volunteers in Zetland are motivated just by helping others. As much as 23% of the surveyed do volunteering to gain knowledge or to develop some new skills. Broadening experience is chosen by 8% of the respondents and thus proves to be the least popular motivation behind volunteering.

The data analysis reveals that volunteering as a way of socializing, chosen by 13% of the polled, is only by 2% more popular than building confidence and self-esteem, favoured by 11% of the teenagers in Zetland. It is not surprising, because mixing socially with others and boosting self-assurance and self-respect are closely interrelated and almost equally important for self-development.

Although volunteerism is per se doing something noble and serving those who need care and affection, it can be time-consuming and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem, one should look for volunteer opportunities that require only a few hours of spare time each month, otherwise school or university studies will be neglected.

In conclusion, I believe that volunteering is really important for society as it is an extremely rewarding experience, giving people a chance to make an impact on the lives of others, whether directly or indirectly. Besides, volunteering provides both emotional and psychological benefits. (250 words)

38.2 Shopping is both a routine and a pleasure and there is hardly anyone who doesn’t like it. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland spend their money on, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, 34% of the teenage boys and girls in Zetland spend their money on clothing and footwear. Technology is the second popular category with as much as 29% of the respondents. Another noticeable fact is that only 8% of the surveyed mention spending money on entertainment.

The statistics analysis demonstrates that spending money on clothes and shoes, chosen by 34% of those polled, is twice as popular as spending money on travelling. Surprisingly, entertainment costs are at the bottom of the list and are by 4% less admired than spending money on personal care. It is clear that modenrn teenagers take care about themselves and thier look.

Although spending money is an exciting activity, not all teenagers can spend their money wisely and that seems to be a problem. Creating a spending plan could be one of the solutions to the problem. A teenage spender should write down all the sources of income they make including pocket money and part-time or summer job wages and analyze their expenses. This could allow young shopaholics to manage their cash responsibly.

In conclusion, I’m convinced that shopping is really important for any adolescent: at this stage of life it teaches young people to become moneywise, satisfies their social needs, helps to create good consumer habits and finally it is really fun. (266 words)

Use the following plan:

-make an opening statement on the subject of the project

-select and report 2-3 facts

-make 1-2 comparisons where relevant

-outline a problem that can arise  with spending money for teens and suggest a way of solving it

-conclude by giving your opinion on the role of shopping  in teenagers’ life.

Recent studies show that teenagers spend all money on different things. To learn more about it, I have found some information on what adolescents in Zetland spend their money on. As a part of my project, I have analyzed these data and come across some interesting findings.

According to the data I have found in the table, teenagers have a wide-range choices when it comes to purchases. The majority of the respondents prefer buying clothes and shoes (34%) whereas spending money on concerts and events is the least popular choice (10%). Buying video games and apps is also quite popular, making up 25% of the respondents respectively.

It is noticeable that there is a substantial difference between the most and the least popular choice of purchases: predictably, spending money on shoes and clothes is almost at 3 times more popular than spending them on concerts and events. The difference between spending money on eating out and personal care is also considerable. It is less than 10% which is surprising because both of these purchases are  not favoured by teenagers in Zetland.

Although financial literacy is studied by teenagers at school, it is still very hard to understand some aspects of spending money. The problem is that adolescents do not value money and can spend everything quickly. The best solution is to practise by making a list of purchases and planning the budget of the month.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that despite some problems associated with spending money, shopping obviously plays a big role in teenagers’ lives, teaching them how to make the right choice and manage money.

Nowadays, teenagers spend a lot of money on different things. To learn more about it, I am currently implementing a project on what teenagers in Zetland spend their money on. I have found the results of a public survey on this subject in a diagram and want to comment on them.

In the light of the opinion poll, I should point out that the highest proportion of the surveyed teenagers spend their money on clothes and shoes (34%). Furthermore, video games and apps are also quite favoured among them (25%), whereas concerts and events appear to be the least prevalent option (10%).

Moreover, comparing the data I can highlight that buying video games and apps is 7% more popular than eating out, 25 and 18% respectively. It can be explained by the fact that many teenagers prefer eating at home in order to cut down on their expense

The importance of pocket money for teenagers

Nowadays money matters are becoming more and more crucial. Money is needed not only by adults but also teenagers. The growing number of parents are worried about this problem. Some people think that school students should be given pocket money, whereas others are convinced that they can do well without it.

The supporters of the first point of view are sure that their children should definitely get some amount of money on a regular basis.

First of all, teenagers need money to cover travel expenses. For example, they have to pay for a bus or metro ticket, especially when the way home is too long to walk. In this case children can undoubtedly get home faster and stay safe.

Secondly, students should have some allowance to spend on additional food when they stay at extra classes. This is obviously more useful for their health and parents do not have to be anxious about anything.

What is more, pocket money is necessary to have some entertainment with classmates. For instance, they might want to go to a cinema, café or bowling centre. Children should enjoy their life with friends and not feel somehow handicapped.

On the other hand, a lot of parents strongly oppose the question of giving pocket money to their children.

To begin with, they think that at this age kids are eager to show off trying to compare who is better. Having some allowance can just spoil them and develop arrogance. They will not be able to learn how to respect each other if they look only at expensive clothes or glittering bags.

Besides, teenagers are not able to spend money rationally. They may get negative influence from adults and waste their money on harmful things, like cigarettes or alcohol. Lack of money will prevent them from losing their minds.

In addition, children who never get spare money have the ability to see how difficult it is for their parents to earn it. These students grow up more conscientious and willing to work, so that afterwards they could allow themselves everything they wish to buy.

As for me, I agree with parents who allow their children to have some pocket money because this way they can be safer and more confident in different situations.

Taking all these points into consideration, I strongly believe that having allowance is very important for teenagers but the amount of money given must be rational, so that you develop responsibility in your children but not carelessness. The leading role belongs only to parents, who ought to educate their kids properly in dealing with every single issue.
