IELTS — это международный экзамен номер один. Ежегодно его сдают тысячи людей по всему миру. Экзамен состоит из 4х частей:  Listening, Reading, Writing и  Speaking.

В марте 2022 возможность сдать IELTS на территории России была приостановлена на неопределенный срок. Но и в такой ситуации выход есть! Можно получить сертификат в другой стране. Из ближайших к нам это Казахстан, Грузия, Узбекистан и Турция.

 IELTS Writing — один из самых сложных модулей на экзамене. Эта часть состоит из двух заданий. В первой части  Writing Academic необходимо описать график, диаграмму или таблицу. В Writing General — составить письмо. Выражать собственное мнение не требуется.

Вторая часть гораздо сложнее. Нужно написать эссе на заданную тему.

В статье я подробно разбираю вторую часть: темы и структуру эссе.

IELTS — International English Language Testing System, международная система оценки знания английского языка. У IELTS три варианта: академический, общий и упрощенный. Последний сдают те, кто хочет получить гостевую визу, он называется IELTS Life Skills.

IELTS — оценивает все навыки и знания английского языка, включает в себя аудирование, чтение, письмо и говорение.

IELTS Listening – в этом модуле  необходимо продемонстрировать навыки восприятия речи на слух. 

IELTS Reading – здесь вам предложат ответить на вопросы по прочитанному тексту. 

IELTS Writing— представляет собой 2 задания на написание эссе. При этом задания в общем и академическом варианте экзаменов отличаются. В первой части IELTS General  нужно написать письмо, в  Writing Academic составить описание графика, диаграммы или схемы, во второй части  — написать  эссе на заданную тему. 

В этой части возникает множество вопросов и я хочу подробно разобрать темы и структуру эссе по IELTS.

Прежде, чем начинать какую-либо подготовку нужно понять, какой у вас уровень английского — Тест для проверки уровня грамматики  и готовности к экзамену IELTS.

IELTS Speaking – одна из самых сложных секций. Задание состоит в том, чтобы не только рассказать о себе экзаменатору, но и ответить на вопросы по заданной теме, высказать свою точку зрения по проблеме.

IELTS Writing Academic

Модуль IELTS Writing проверяет способность написать два совершенно разных текста за 60 минут. Тест IELTS Academic Writing состоит из двух заданий. 

• Academic task 1

Вам необходимо будет за 20 минут  описать график, таблицу, карту или диаграмму. Нужно написать не менее 150 слов, диаграмма может быть как круговая, так и линейная. Графики тоже могут быть самыми разнообразными.

  Это задание проверяет вашу способность выбирать и сообщать об основных характеристиках, описывать и сравнивать данные, определять значимость и тенденции в фактической информации или описывать процесс.

The line graphs illustrate average monthly spending on children’s sporting activities and the number of children who took part in football, athletics and swimming in the United Kingdom between 2008 and 2014.

Overall, monthly spending on children’s sports increased over time and football was the most popular sports among British children.

According to the first line chart, 20 million pounds was spent monthly, on an average, in 2008 for British children’s sporting activities which gradually went up in the subsequent years. The expenditure in 2011 reached to over 25 million pounds and in 2014, this dramatically soared to 32 million.

In 2008, approximately 8 million children participated in football while 1 to 2 million in swimming and athletics, making football the most widely played sports in the UK. However, the popularity of swimming grew and in 2014 roughly 3.9 million participants took this activity. With a steady rise in popularity, athletics was taken up by nearly 5 million children in 2014. Football participants range from 8.5 to 9.2 million during this period, considerably higher than the participants in the other two activities. It is worth noticing that more children participated in these sports in 2014 than they did in 2008.

Будет проверяться ваша способность отвечать, высказываться и обосновывать свое мнение, обсуждая тему, резюмируя детали, обрисовывая проблемы, определяя возможные решения и поддерживая то, что вы пишете, причинами, аргументами и соответствующими примерами из вашего собственного опыта или знаний.

Будет оцениваться владение лексикой и грамматикой, ваши знания в таких областях как здравоохранение, социальные проблемы, экономика, экология и многие другие.

In modern day society, it has become common to make copyright protected material freely available on the Internet with the result that the owners of the work lose large sums of money. The discussion of whether this distribution is of positive or negative nature has therefore been raised. Personally, I believe that this issue has both negative and positive effects.

Distributing copyright protected material freely online can firstly help make this material more popular. Often people are not willing to spend money on a film or song before being exposed to it once, as they cannot be sure that they will enjoy the material they are about to purchase. If they purchase a song or film and then do not like it, the money spent will have been wasted, which is disappointing. Frequently, people purchase copyright protected material that they enjoyed after being exposed to it once, meaning that often owners often receive money at a later stage. An owner’s reputation can additionally improve, because frequently owners who allow their work to be distributed partially or completely online have a more positive reputation amongst customers.

Regardless of the positive effects of the free online distribution of copyright protected material, it can be said that this distribution has several negative effects. Firstly, owners lose large sums of money through it. A lot of time and money can be spent producing the material distributed, as certain spaces and equipment must be rented or bought to produce a certain song or film. Like all other people, artists need money to survive and thus are at a disadvantage when they do not receive money for their work. I personally believe therefore that governments should make sure that when something is performed in public or when work is displayed in public, artists should receive credit and money.

In conclusion, it can be said that the online distribution of copyright protected material has both negative and positive effects. In my opinion, it cannot fully be determined whether this distribution is of a positive or negative nature; one must decide upon this for oneself.

IELTS Writing General

Письменный тест модуля General также  состоит из двух заданий, на выполнение которых отводится 60 минут. Данный проще академического.

• General task 1

В первом задании кандидатов просят ответить на проблему в виде письма с запросом информации или объяснением ситуации. Предлагается потратить около 20 минут на задание 1, которое требует от кандидатов написать не менее 150 слов. В зависимости от предложенной задачи кандидаты оцениваются на предмет их способности:

— вести личную переписку

— выявить и предоставить общую фактическую информацию

— выражать потребности, желания, симпатии и антипатии

— высказывать мнения (точку зрения, жалобы и т. д.)

The course director of your previous college has invited you to attend a party for new students, and he has also asked you to give a talk about studying overseas. You have an important examination on the same day so you cannot attend the party.

Write to the director to apologize and to explain why you cannot attend. Suggest another date when you could give your talk.

Step 1. Analyse the question

• What is the topic?

Find out by underlining the key words in the question.

You have been invited to go to a party and give a talk, but you cannot go to the party.

• Who are you writing to?

The letter is to the course director of your old college. The style of the letter should be formal or semi-formal.

• What is your purpose in writing the letter?

You should write to the director to apologize and to explain why you cannot attend. Suggest another date when you could give your talk or some other solution.

So, involve these three things:

• apologize (for not being able to attend);
• explain (why you cannot attend);
• suggest (another date).

Step 2. Make notes of ideas

Make a brief note of any ideas which you might use in your answer.

Examples:

• thank the director for the invitation
• say that you saw some college friends last week
• explain why the exam is important
• explain why the date of the exam cannot be changed
• talk about your new college
• ask how everyone is at the old college
• ask for details of the party
• say that you hope the party is a success
• say you can’t come to the party and apologize
• explain what you will say in your talk about studying overseas
• explain it is the first time you have ever been asked to give a talk like this
• say when you can come
• tell the director how to contact you

Step 3. Make a plan

Decide which of these ideas you will definitely use in the letter. Organize them.

Example:

1. thank the director for the invitation

2. apologize

3. why the exam is important

4. why the date of the exam cannot be changed

5. say when you can come

6. tell the director how to contact you

7. ask how everyone is at the old college

8. you hope the party is a success

Step 4. Write the letter following the plan.

Step 5. Check for mistakes

Pay attention to the following grammar items:

• Subject/Verb agreement
• Plurals
• Subject/Verb/Object
• Tenses
• Modals
• Word form
• Possessives
• Spelling, capitalization and punctuation
• Articles

If you found it difficult to make these corrections, you probably need to study some more English grammar. In addition to the categories of mistakes mentioned in the check-list, you should also make sure that you can use the following grammar points correctly:

• pronouns
• connecting words (conjunctions)
• conditional sentences
• relative clauses
• prepositions

Будет проверяться  ваша способность раскрыть тему, высказываться и обосновывать свое мнение.  Обсуждая тему, резюмировать детали, выявить проблемы, определить возможные решения и поддерживать то, что вы пишете, причинами, аргументами и соответствующими примерами из вашего собственного опыта или знаний.

In the future, people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Our world is full of amazing places and almost every people would like to visit such ones. On holiday they are given this opportunity and people leave their country and travel. But what will they choose in the future? In my opinion, most people will prefer to spend their holidays travelling.

First of all, people are fed up with own country and they will be in the future, especially. They want to try and see something new. Secondly, travelling improves language skills, broadens the horizons, gives the opportunity to communicate with foreigners. People learn about culture, taste local food. Thirdly, they get brilliant experience which they will never forget.

Nevertheless, it is believed that people will live in their own country. To begin with, there are a lot of places in their country which are worth visiting. People think that it is enough for them. There will be more entertainment and interesting places in the future than nowadays. Of course, people will not want to go far if they have everything they need in own country. What is more, much money is spent on travelling, so people will save it and travel to towns in their country only.

I do not agree with this opinion. I think, people will have a lot of opportunities to earn money in the future as the world is developing very quickly. So they can afford travelling.

To sum up, travelling abroad on holiday has as many advantages as staying in own country. But I strongly believe that people should not be afraid of leaving their country. I hope, they will search other places all over the world.

Во-вторых, путешествия улучшают языковые навыки, расширяют кругозор, дают возможность общаться с иностранцами. Люди знакомятся с культурой, пробуют местную еду. В-третьих, они получают блестящий опыт, который они никогда не забудут.

Тем не менее считается, что люди будут жить в своей собственной стране. Начнем с того, что в их стране есть много мест, которые стоит посетить. Люди думают, что им этого достаточно. В будущем будет больше развлечений и интересных мест, чем сейчас. Конечно, люди не захотят далеко уезжать, если у них есть все необходимое в собственной стране. Более того, на путешествия тратится много денег, поэтому люди будут экономить их и ездить только в города своей страны.

Я не согласен с этим мнением. Я думаю, что в будущем у людей будет много возможностей зарабатывать деньги, так как мир развивается очень быстро. Чтобы они могли позволить себе путешествовать.

Подводя итог, можно сказать, что поездка на отдых за границу имеет столько же преимуществ, как и пребывание в собственной стране. Но я твердо верю, что люди не должны бояться покидать свою страну. Я надеюсь, что они будут искать другие места по всему миру.

При подготовке к IELTS Writing task 2 вы должны учитывать, что нет определенного точного перечня тем. Готовиться нужно ко всему.

Различия между модулями Academic и General заключаются в направленности тематик в научную или житейско-бытовую сторону.

При подготовке вы должны учитывать, что существует несколько типов эссе, каждый из них имеет свою структуру, вопросы и нюансы написания.

Начнем с видов сочинений, которые встречаются в IELTS. Всего их четыре:

1. Expressing opinions (о Вашем мнении),
2. Advantages/Disadvantages (достоинства и недостатки),
3. Providing Solutions (решение каких-либо проблем),
4. Discursive Essay (где Вас просят рассмотреть определенную тему с разных точек зрения).

• Expressing opinions 

Если в конце задания спрашивается, согласны вы или нет, или в какой степени вы согласны (Do you agree or disagree, to what extent do you agree?), то это сочинение должно быть полностью о вашем мнении. Во вступлении вы должны перефразировать тему задания, используя другие конструкции и синонимы, и обозначить свое мнение – согласны вы или нет. В IELTS Academic вам нужно будет еще добавить в какой степени (I agree/disagree completely/partly). А в последующих абзацах нужно доказывать, что Ваше мнение верно, объясняя причины и давая наглядные примеры. В заключении вам нужно будет подвести итоги  с использованием слов-синонимов.

• Advantages/Disadvantages 

  Вам нужно показать преимущества и недостатки того или иного объекта, того или иного утверждения. Важно понимать, что в данном типе эссе ваше мнение должно быть максимально нейтральным. Вам нужно описать плюсы и минусы, провести анализ. В заключении Вы должны сделать вывод – выразите свое мнение, но без strong language, то есть без сильной эмоциональной окраски  (hate, cannot stand, и т.д.).

• Providing Solutions

В задании будет обозначена проблема, а вас просят предоставить ее решение. Вам следует объяснить, почему это является проблемой, каковы причины и последствия. Затем предложить первое решение и объяснить, как оно может помочь. Третий абзац рекомендуют посвятить второму альтернативному решению, опять же с примерами. В заключении выбрать лучшее решение, подвести итог и объяснение. Также возможно высказать свое мнение, помогут ли эти решения и как быстро.

• Discursive Essay

Вам необходимо с разных точек зрения посмотреть на явление и порассуждать на заданную тему. Этот тип эссе встречается в IELTS Academic. Во вступлении формулируется тема с уточнением того, что многие люди оценивают ее по-разному. Во втором абзаце – рассматривается проблема с одной точки зрения (скажем, политической), подкрепляя основной тезис примерами и причинами. В третьем  – с другой, например, экономической точки зрения. В заключении вы можете поделиться своим мнением, придерживаясь при этом нейтрально — официального стиля.

Как быстро написать эссе по IELTS Writing?

Написать эссе быстро возможно только в том случае, если вы понимаете структуру, стратегию написания. Знаете все основные моменты. Тогда вам легко составить план и, ориентируясь по нему, написать эссе.

Я хочу поделиться с вами памяткой, которая помогла мне сдать IELTS на  8.5 баллов. А теперь помогает моим студентам.

Памятка по эссе   IELTS Writing:

1. Необходимо внимательно прочитать тему и проанализировать к какому типу эссе она относиться.
2. Написать общий план, продумать структуру.
3. Разбить эссе на абзацы и понять, какую мысль вы хотите донести в каждом из них.
4. Один абзац — одна мысль.
5. Примерно подсчитать, на сколько слов получается ваше эссе. Как это сделать проще всего? Я предлагаю посчитать  примерное количество предложений. Зная сколько слов вы обычно используете, то легко перемножить и понять достаточно или нет.

Мои ученики используют в среднем предложения длиной 10 слов. Соответственно, им нужно написать 25 предложений, чтобы получилось хорошее, уверенное эссе.

1. Оставшееся  время вы сможете потратить на написание эссе и проверку ошибок. Будьте внимательны! Не спешите! И получайте удовольствие от прохождения теста.

Структура эссе IELTS

Базовая  структура эссе состоит из 3-4 частей. Первая часть вступление — 2-3 предложения. Вторая часть, основная  — несколько абзацев по 5-6 предложений. И в заключении вывод. Как правило,  эссе состоит из 4-х абзацев. 

Структура эссе во многом зависит от типа эссе, которое вам дано. Разберем более детально:

1. Вступление. Непременно повторите вопрос своими словами — так вы представите тему задания (да, это перефразирование, но не просто перефразирование — вам нужно показать экзаменатору, что вы действительно поняли вопрос). Вступление должно включать общее заявление, поэтому я  рекомендую  потратить время на обдумывание при планировании этой части. В expressing opinions (эссе о вашем мнении)  вам нужно обозначить свою точку зрения и то, как вы собираетесь ее отстаивать. А следующее предложение должно представлять само эссе. Вступление должно направить мысль экзаменатора.
2. Обоснуйте свое мнение/Expressing opinions. Во вступлении вы обозначили свою точку зрения и теперь — в первом абзаце — вам следует изложить факты, подтверждающие ваш выбор. Конструкция должна содержать убедительное заявление, 2—3 сопроводительных предложения с пояснениями и дополнительной информацией, актуальный пример и вывод из конкретного абзаца.
3. Обозначьте противоположную точку зрения/Advantages/Disadvantages /Providing Solutions /Discursive Essay Начать можно со слов «However», «Although», «Despite», показывающих, что вы меняете направление мысли. Убеждать экзаменатора в правильности этого мнения не стоит, но вот осветить его нужно обязательно. Структура здесь та же: вступление, аргументация, ответы на вопросы — почему, как и т. п.
4. Заключение — это очень важный, пусть и краткий, абзац, который призван суммировать все идеи и продублировать вашу позицию. Он совершенно необходим для сочинений из разряда «в какой мере» и рассуждений и менее актуален для текстов о проблемах и способах их решения, где вы тоже можете высказать свое мнение, но не обязаны это делать. Запомните — в заключении не должно быть никаких новых идей.

Как написать эссе по IELTS на 7 баллов?

• Эссе  на 7 баллов и выше соответствует уровню Upper-Intermediate. У вас  практически нет грамматических ошибок, есть сложные грамматические конструкции и слова, разнообразные выражения и синонимы, работа логична, структурирована и в абзацах  присутствуют основная идея, её объяснение + пример/результат. Эссе  написано по теме и ваша точка зрения четко выражена, эссе отвечает на все вопросы задания.
• Вам нужно написать не менее 10 разных эссе на этапе подготовке. Это поможет набить руку, визуально представлять сколько вам нужно написать предложений, чтобы получилось не менее 250 слов. 
• Четко знать типы эссе, знать чем они отличаются. Уметь составить план и структуру для каждого типа эссе.
• Необходимо написать предварительно план эссе. Это поможет структурировать информацию и меньше нервничать на экзамене.
• Пропишите себе чек-лист проверки:

1. количество слов
2. грамматические ошибки
3. достаточное ли количество лексических конструкций
4. ответили ли вы на цель задания
5. правильно ли выявили тип эссе
6. достаточно ли аргументов, для ваших тезисов.

Пунктуация IELTS Writing

Для русскоговорящих кандидатов большой проблемой может стать пунктуация в английском языке. Обычно выбирают 2 стратегии: либо ставят знаки везде, где нужно и не нужно, либо не ставят их совсем. Это ошибка!

Чтобы экзаменатор был доволен и критерий Grammar/Accuracy был у вас в порядке (6.0 и выше), нужно освоить нехитрые правила английской пунктуации.

•  Заглавные буквы и точки

Новое предложение начинаем с большой буквы и обязательно ставим точку в конце.

С большой буквы пишутся: имена, названия мест, дни недели, национальности и языки.

Her father’s name is Jack. He lives in Spain, but he’s Russian. He can speak three languages: English, Spanish and Russian. Every Saturday he goes swimming.

• Апостроф

Апостроф используется :

1) для образования сокращенных глагольных форм: I’m a student. I won’t take it. He’d like to go there.

2) для образования притяжательного падежа существительного: My mom’s shoes, parents’ car, Sean’s daughter.

3) В названиях магазинов, частных домов, фирм и т.д.: I’m going to the hairdresser’s. Let’s go to the baker’s.

4) Если предмет принадлежит нескольким лицам, то апостроф и S ставится после последнего из них: Ben and Katy’s house. Если же каждому в отдельности, то после каждого: Ben’s and Katy’s bikes

• Запятые

Когда вы ставите запятую экзаменатор чуть останавливается, делает паузу в чтении вашего эссе и если вы их ставите везде или очень часто, как в русском языке, экзаменатору будет сложно читать.

Чаще всего: когда в русском запятая нужна, в английском её ставить не надо!

У англичан с запятыми всё просто, ставьте запятую после слов-связок в начале предложения:

1. Запятая отделяет прямую речь от слов автора. Она ставится перед закрывающей кавычкой: “I want to go with you,” Sally said to me.
2. Запятая разделяет две цифры в предложении: In 1997, 2000 new students entered the university.
3. Запятая разделяет два прилагательных, если между ними можно поставить союз and: You are a very good, smart man.
4. Запятая разделяет однородные члены предложения, даже если перед последним есть союз and: I’ve tried football, basketball, rugby, and tennis.
5. Запятая отделяет друг от друга члены предложения при противопоставлении: This bag is mine, not hers.
6. Запятая выделяет слова therefore / however, если они прерывают повествование: They are, therefore, sure that the work will be done on time.
7. Запятая используется для выделения вводных слов и словосочетаний: No doubt, she will be satisfied by this present. Frankly speaking, I’ve left my keys at home.
8. Если предложение начинается с вводных слов, таких как well, yes, no, то после них ставится запятая: Yes, I do trust you.
9. Запятая разделяет две части сложного предложения (содержащих подлежащее и сказуемое) без союзов: The weather was good, the sky was blue, the rain stopped.
10.  Запятая используется для выделения пояснений, прерывающих предложение:  He is, as you can see, very smart.
11. Запятая используется для выделения обращения: David, where’s my phone?
12. Запятая разделяет две части сложного предложения, соединенных союзами and и but: She wanted to buy a new bag, but she couldn’t afford it.
13. Если в начале идет придаточное предложение, то оно отделяется от главное запятой: If you don’t want to go, let me know now.
14. Запятая ставится при написании дат: после дня месяца и после года: My husband was born on August 5, 1983, in Russia.
15. Запятая ставится после обращения в начале письма и после подписи в конце письма: Dear Claire, / Sincerely yours,.

Критерии оценки части Writing 

IELTS Writing оценивается по 4 параметрам:

• Task Response (достаточно ли полно вы ответили на задание).
• Coherence and cohesion (логичность и последовательность распределения абзацев, ключевых предложений и аргументов).
• Lexical resource  (словарный запас).
• Grammatical range and accuracy (разнообразие, сложность и точность грамматических конструкций).

Типичные ошибки 

• Неформальные сокращения

Сокращения don’t, can’t, isn’t, won’t – неформальный стиль, а IELTS Writing – формальный.

Поэтому, пишем полные формы:

Do not, cannot, is not, will not

• Отсутствие точек в конце предложения

Если не ставить точку в конце экзаменатор не поймёт, что предложение закончилось. Это негативно скажется на связности и логичности текста.

• Запятые

Вместо того чтобы закончить предложение и поставить точку, ставят запятую и продолжают. В IELTS лучше избегать таких моментов.

В целом лучше пропустить запятую нежели поставить, так как в английском нет запятых там, где в русском они есть:

I believe, that people should live in peace — запятой тут не должно быть!

Правильно: I believe that people should live in peace.

• Восклицательный знак

Некоторые думают, что нужно усилить эмоциональность эссе и поставить ещё и «!» в конце. Пожалуйста, ставьте точку. IELTS Writing (график, формальное письмо и эссе) – это формальный стиль, поэтому никаких эмоций и восклицаний. Только точки.

• Неправильное использование апострофа

Знания студента – a student’s knowledge

Знания студентов – students’ knowledge

Где у нас ставится апостроф, если множественное число?

Правильно, в самом конце, после s:

Manager’s money (мн. число)

Но

A manager’s money (ед. число, один менеджер)

• Вопросительный знак

Иногда пишут вопросы в эссе, типа: so what can the government do to tackle this issue?

Это не чат и не диалог. Риторические вопросы скорей неформальны, и в IELTS Writing лучше их избегать. Можно во вступлении, если очень хочется, но только один раз за эссе. Ставьте точки и пишите утверждениями – это точно работает. Да, вы можете встретить примеры эссе с вопросами. Подумайте о стиле, что более формально? В курсовой, в реферате или дипломе вы пишите вопросы? Или всё-таки утвердительные предложения?

• Неверно поставлена точка с запятой

Вместо того чтобы думать что поставить: точку или запятую, ставьте точку. В английском нет жёстких правил и можно спокойно ставить точки. Если думаете, что выбрать точку или точку с запятой, выбирайте точку.

Ключевым фактором подготовки к  IELTS является то, что студентам важно сделать две вещи:

-улучшить уровень английского

-подготовиться к специфике экзамена.

Let me start by saying that by far the best resource for authentic IELTS essay topics are the Cambridge 1 – 13 books. These are real past IELTS exam papers and, therefore, provide students with the highest quality questions for all parts of the test. However, what do you do if you have finished the Cambridge books? Or you struggle with one particular type of question and want a lot of that specific type of practise?

Well, until now, people have relied on questions that were “memorised” by test-takers(often incorrectly), or written by well-meaning teachers who have no specific education in test creation. As a result, many of the “IELTS questions” on the Internet are worded incorrectly. And, as a professional exam writer (yes, I work creating academic exams for universities), I know how damaging it can be if even one word in a question is changed.

So, today I am sharing my list of 100 IELTS writing topics. IELTS Discuss Both Views and Give your Own Opinion Writing Topics

IELTS Two-Part Question Essay Topics
