A. The city of Fez — the third largest metropolis in Morocco — has expanded far beyond its original 9th-century borders and has modernised in many ways. But its medieval medina, the oldest market in the world, remains the heart of the city, a Unesco World Heritage site that houses a maze of narrow, twisting streets where people gather, shop, eat and pray. Fez’s medina is also a perfect place to uncover the stories, and the secrets, of the people who live and work behind its walls. As author Paul Bowles, who lived in Tangier for 52 years, wrote: «The blank wall is Fez’s symbol, but it is this very secretiveness, which gives the city its quality.»
B. «In the medina, the freshest food is set on the Earth to be sold,» said Merieme Zared, a tour guide and cooking instructor with Cafe Clock, referring to how vendors place their produce on the ground. The food’s proximity to the earth, she explained, represents its closeness to it. In the Al Achabine souk, tiny restaurants abound, cooking food from these fresh ingredients. They sell fried fish marinated in charmoula, a traditional Moroccan marinade; and thick bissara, a soup made with fava beans. Around the corner, smoke billows from a grill cooking meat kebabs; inside the restaurant, with barely enough room for the cook to move, men sit crammed around a small table, eating meat and bread with their hands.
C. «Balak, balak,» the donkey drivers shout to clear the way as the animals carry goods in and out of the medina. Cars are not allowed into Fez’s old city and couldn’t fit through the streets if they tried; residents make do with getting around on foot. In Bowles’ 1955 novel The Spider’s House, set in Fez, he wrote that being without cars means that adhering to a schedule is impossible. After all, when you are on foot, unexpected events like a running into a friend can happen on the way.
From the city’s rooftops, the medina is part cacophony, part harmony. Lookingover the streets, many appear so narrow they all but disappear. But even if you cannot always see them, you can hear them: hammers bang on metal; voices shout to each other; a child cries; and hand-drawn carts rattle over the Talaa Kebira, the medina’s main thoroughfare.
E. In Fez, the streets and cafes are dominated by men. While women can be seen outside buying groceries or shopping for other household supplies, they are always moving. It is men who linger in cafes over glasses of mint tea and in shops holding conversations with friends. The public visibility of only one gender may tie to persistent patriarchal attitudes: in a poll taken from 2011 to 2013 by Afrobarometer, an independent research group in Africa, only 50 % of respondents in Morocco were in favour of women’s equal opportunities, compared to 75 % of those in eastern and southern Africa.
F. Women and girls admire mannequins modelling colourful kaftans and takchitas, the traditional Moroccan dresses often worn for formal occasions. These kaftans are dressier versions of what most women in Fez typically wear in the winter: long, straight robes made of polar fleece, ideal for covering up and keeping warm, as most houses in Fez do not have heating. Other women choose to wear jeans and jackets. It also is not uncommon to see women who do not wear a hijab, the traditional veil worn to cover hair.
G. Whatever the future might hold for Morocco, one thing is certain: within the medina’s ramparts, the old, unhurried way of life will continue, no matter how fast the world changes around it. “Fez does not have to rely upon its ancient structures for its claim to importance,” Bowles wrote. “Its interest lies not so much in relics of the past as in the life of the people there; that life is the past, still alive and functioning.” That holds true today. Fez is its ancient streets, but more importantly it is the people who live behind its walls

Fez is the second-largest city in Morocco (by population), after Casablanca. Fez is one of the royal northeastern cities in Morocco which is also known as the country’s cultural and spiritual center. Stroll through the largest streets of Fez, Talaa Kibera. It’s not very crowded with tourists, but you can definitely get the feel of old Fez by visiting several souks.
If you haven’t tried a traditional Moroccan bath known as Hammam, you will surely wail. You can ask the locals and they will gladly direct you to the nearest Hammam. You must bring your own soap, towel, scrub, and other amenities you may need.
Visit one of the largest musical festivals which happens in June every year known as the Sacred Music Festival. This musical festival features music from all around the world.
How about indulging yourself in cooking Moroccan cuisine which is often considered one of the best cuisines in the world after French and Italian cuisine. Eating Moroccan food like couscous, tajine, or maybe a bowl of Harrira is a different thing and cooking that food is totally a new experience in itself. You can visit Fez Cooking School and make yourself your own lunch and meet some great people and take the authentic recipes with you. One of the best cooking classes is being conducted at café Clock, you can get to learn all sorts of things about Moroccan food.

Batha Museum
This museum is known for its artifacts, sculpted wood, jewelry, carpets, and pottery. It is housed in a Moorish palace from the 19th century.
Bab Boujeloud
This place is commonly known as the “Blue Gate” (as blue Fassi tiles are used on the outer side), serving as the main entrance to the old Medina in Fez. You can visit Talaa Kibera (big hill) on your left and Talaa Sghira(little hill) on your right. These roads lead you to the main fairs in the old medina and merge with each other ahead into the medina. Bab Boujeloud and its surroundings were constructed in the 20th century. The gate is blue on the exterior and from the interior it’s green. Both Facades are decorated with detailed zellij work.
Medersa Bou Inania
This school holds one of the greatest depictions of Marinid architecture from the 14th century. A guide is recommended when visiting Medersa Bou Inania, as non-Muslim visitors are often denied entry due to prayer times, but you can always see the royally decorated courtyard.
Mellah
The Mellah also known as the Jewish Quarter of Fez and was founded in 1438. There are very few Jewish people residing here today as most of them have settled in France or Israel. The Mellah is obviously worth a visit as you can get to see ancient ornate balconies and wrought-iron windows. You can also pay a visit to the Jewish cemetery which is also a must-see place, be cautious of the fake guides over there, so it’s always a good option to go with a knowledgeable guide and avoid being hassled.
Fondouk el-Nejjarine
It is also known as the “Wood Museum “ which faces the carpenter’s square. It was constructed in the 18th century. Tourists can stroll around and learn about the original woodwork and artifacts dating from the 14th century. Do not miss to visit the rooftop terrace as that will give you one of the finest views of Fez.
Nejjarine Square and Museum
It is situated in the middle of the medina near the carpenter district. This amazing square is dotted with Andalusian-style architecture known from the 18th century. The museum displays woodworking tools and the collection of wood and cabinetwork, from various regions of Morocco, both in ancient and modern forms.
Merenid Tombs
Located just outside the medina, the Merenid Tombs date back to the Merenid Dynasty that ruled Morocco from the 13th to 15th centuries. The crumbling ruins of the Merenid Tombs sit on a hill above Fez, affording expansive views of the city and countryside. The tombs have beautifully detailed carvings, but the tourists come here mainly for the environment and the view.
Tanneries
On warm days you do not need directions to Tanneries as the smell will take you there.“The smell is free… but if you want to buy, you have to pay,” Thami says. It is quite captivating to stand upon the rooftops and watch the tanners using nothing but their bare feet to dye the leather. Leather tanneries in Morocco still follow the ancient system of treating leather. Hides are soaked for a few days in vessels full of cow urine, quicklime, water, and salt before being picked at and dried. Then they are sent to a different set of vessels filled with diluted pigeon excrement and water to be softened. With nothing but their bare feet and hands, tanners knead the skins to their desired softness. You are surely going to end up buying handmade Moroccan leather goods.
The University of Al-Qarawiyyin
The Al-Qarawiyyin (al-Karaouine) Mosque and University in Fez, Morocco was founded by Fatima al-Fihri, the daughter of a wealthy Tunisian in 859 AD. UNESCO considers it to be the oldest university in the world. The libraries have several extremely valuable documents dating from 780 A.D. including the Al-Muwatta of Malik written on gazelle parchment. Non-Muslims cannot enter, but it’s possible to peek in at the beautiful interior that includes two chandeliers that were originally church bells from Andalusia. Madrassa of Al-Qarawiyyin is located next to the mosque in the middle of the medina. This is one of the only Madrassa’s opened to non-Muslims. A Madrassa is a school of learning and instruction. This wonderful Madrassa is decorated with glazed tiles and plaster. It is referred to as one of the oldest functioning universities in the world.
The Royal Palace of Fez (Dar el Makhzen)
This palace was built in the 17th century, this palace can be appreciated only from the outside. But behind that door is actually the real things to see, the extensive landscapes, painted ceiling.

A. The city of Fez — the third largest metropolis in Morocco — has expanded far beyond its original 9th-century borders and has modernised in many ways. But its medieval medina, the oldest market in the world, remains the heart of the city, a Unesco World Heritage site that houses a maze of narrow, twisting streets where people gather, shop, eat and pray. Fez’s medina is also a perfect place to uncover the stories, and the secrets, of the people who live and work behind its walls. As author Paul Bowles, who lived in Tangier for 52 years, wrote: «The blank wall is Fez’s symbol, but it is this very secretiveness, which gives the city its quality.»
B. «In the medina, the freshest food is set on the Earth to be sold,» said Merieme Zared, a tour guide and cooking instructor with Cafe Clock, referring to how vendors place their produce on the ground. The food’s proximity to the earth, she explained, represents its closeness to it. In the Al Achabine souk, tiny restaurants abound, cooking food from these fresh ingredients. They sell fried fish marinated in charmoula, a traditional Moroccan marinade; and thick bissara, a soup made with fava beans. Around the corner, smoke billows from a grill cooking meat kebabs; inside the restaurant, with barely enough room for the cook to move, men sit crammed around a small table, eating meat and bread with their hands.
C. «Balak, balak,» the donkey drivers shout to clear the way as the animals carry goods in and out of the medina. Cars are not allowed into Fez’s old city and couldn’t fit through the streets if they tried; residents make do with getting around on foot. In Bowles’ 1955 novel The Spider’s House, set in Fez, he wrote that being without cars means that adhering to a schedule is impossible. After all, when you are on foot, unexpected events like a running into a friend can happen on the way.
From the city’s rooftops, the medina is part cacophony, part harmony. Lookingover the streets, many appear so narrow they all but disappear. But even if you cannot always see them, you can hear them: hammers bang on metal; voices shout to each other; a child cries; and hand-drawn carts rattle over the Talaa Kebira, the medina’s main thoroughfare.
E. In Fez, the streets and cafes are dominated by men. While women can be seen outside buying groceries or shopping for other household supplies, they are always moving. It is men who linger in cafes over glasses of mint tea and in shops holding conversations with friends. The public visibility of only one gender may tie to persistent patriarchal attitudes: in a poll taken from 2011 to 2013 by Afrobarometer, an independent research group in Africa, only 50 % of respondents in Morocco were in favour of women’s equal opportunities, compared to 75 % of those in eastern and southern Africa.
F. Women and girls admire mannequins modelling colourful kaftans and takchitas, the traditional Moroccan dresses often worn for formal occasions. These kaftans are dressier versions of what most women in Fez typically wear in the winter: long, straight robes made of polar fleece, ideal for covering up and keeping warm, as most houses in Fez do not have heating. Other women choose to wear jeans and jackets. It also is not uncommon to see women who do not wear a hijab, the traditional veil worn to cover hair.
G. Whatever the future might hold for Morocco, one thing is certain: within the medina’s ramparts, the old, unhurried way of life will continue, no matter how fast the world changes around it. “Fez does not have to rely upon its ancient structures for its claim to importance,” Bowles wrote. “Its interest lies not so much in relics of the past as in the life of the people there; that life is the past, still alive and functioning.” That holds true today. Fez is its ancient streets, but more importantly it is the people who live behind its walls

Morocco has a long history that dates back to Paleolithic times. At present, Morocco has a large number of cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Tangier and many more. Of all these cities, the Atlantic port of Casablanca is the largest of Morocco’s cities. Let us have a look at various aspects of the major Moroccan cities. Agadir, Morocco has a population of 421,844. This city, where the majority of the residents are Tashelhit-speakers, was completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake hit its surroundings in 1960. However, today, thanks to a very favorable climate and the presence of beaches, Agadir is well-known as a vacation destination within North Africa. The city is picturesque thanks to its location in the Anti-Atlas mountains. It is found in the country’s mid-southern region. Kenitra is home in Northern Morocco. 431,282 people live in Kenitra, which formerly went by the name of Port Lyautey. Kenitra is considered to be a port city, although its port is on a river. It is the regional capital of Gharb-Chrarda-Beni Hssen and is found only 36 km away from the capital of Morocco, Rabat. Oujda is Morocco’s eighth largest city, with a total population of 494,252. It is found in the east of the country close to the border with Algeria. The city has existed since at least 994 AD. Today, Oujda is a modern Mediterranean city that experiences warmer temperatures than other cities of its size in Morocco. Oujda has a popular old city. Rabat is the capital of Morocco. It is also the seventh largest city in the country with a total population of around 580,000. The city’s «medina» (or old town) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is located in the country’s north-central region. The capital of Morocco was moved from Fes to Rabat in 1912. Meknes is home to 632,079 individuals. It is one of Morocco’s Four Imperial Cities, and is a very historic city that dates back to the 11th century. The inland city is known for being well-preserved. Salé has a population of 890,403 individuals. It is the fifth largest city in Morocco by population. The city has Berber roots dating back to the 1000s. The city is also called Salli or Sallee. One of the most famous sights in Salé is the giant Great Mosque. Salé is located adjacent to the Moroccan capital of Rabat. Marrakesh, with a population of just under one million, is one of the most famous cities in Morocco. It is located near the foot of the Atlas Mountains, and is also one of the country’s Four Imperial Cities. Tangier, one of the three largest cities of Morocco today, also has had immense economic and cultural importance in the past. It was even a prestigious city within the Roman Empire for more than 200 years. Today around one million people call Tangier home. Fez is the second largest city in Morocco with a total population of 1,112,072. Fez has an interesting history, as it was a thriving center for a Jewish community in earlier historical times. It was one of the imperial cities of ancient Morocco and a popular commercial center. It is at present a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco with a total population of 3,359,818. The city has its origins in the 7th Century when Berbers, an indigenous ethnic tribe, made it their capital. The Portuguese invaded what is now Casablanca, then referred to as Anfa, in Morocco in the 15th Century. They renamed it as Casa Branca in 1575. Arabs, later on, rebuilt the city after a massive earthquake and named it Dar Al Beida or the white house. The present-day name is the Spanish translation of the same. At that time, it was the focal point of sea trade between Morocco, and the rest of Europe. Enormous increases in population are among the hallmarks of several Moroccan cities in recent times, including Casablanca, Fez, Tangier, Marrakesh, and Beni Mellal. The populations of all these cities have crossed the one million mark. Of these, Casablanca has become the most populated city with a population of more than 4.2 million! It is also the economic capital of Morocco with a host of industries such as fishing, furniture manufacturing, glass-making, electronics, cigarettes, and more. It also houses the headquarters of most of the business organizations of Morocco. Fez is also attracting a large number of tourists from all over the world. The tourism office is making multiple efforts to improve the existing tourist services and increasing the bed capacity, which are yielding good results. Tangier is even becoming a place of immense economic importance with new investments in its aerospace industry. Traffic congestion, degrading air quality and groundwater quality are the main challenges faced by the people of Casablanca. The use of empty land area as dumping grounds has also made the situation worse over the years. Similarly, Fez is facing a persistent problem of water pollution and scorpion bites, while the city of Tangier is facing the pressing problem of overpopulation because of a continuous surge of people flocking to the city over the years. Fez is also facing a problem of inadequate bed capacity for tourists, which is gradually improving.
