Russian inventors have contributed generously to the development of global scientific thought. Many of their inventions have literally transformed the world, enabling us to enjoy such blessings of civilisation as aircraft, cars, computers and television. RIR presents a dozen of such revolutionary innovations that have become an integral part of modern existence.

Caterpillar tracks, track assembly

In 1837, Russian army captain Dmitry Zagryazhsky came up with drawings of a caterpillar drive and applied to the Ministry of Finance for a patent for his invention of a “carriage with a flat chain mechanical caterpillar”. He was granted a patent but his invention did not interest manufacturers at that time and the patent was annulled in 1839. Much later, in 1877, Russian peasant and self-taught inventor Fyodor Blinov completed Zagryazhsky’s unfinshed task and created a wagon that moved on caterpillars. This invention gave the green light to production of tractors and, subsequently, of tanks.

Electrically-powered railway wagons

The invention of an electrically-powered railway wagon was a precondition for the transport revolution that spurred the development of towns and industrial centres. It all started in 1874-1876, when Fyodor Pirotsky conducted a slew of experiments on transmitting electricity over a distance, with one rail serving as a direct conductor and the other, as a reverse conductor. An electric motor, located one kilometre from the power source, worked. A few years later, he conducted an experiment at a railway spur near Sestroretsk. There were 40 people in the wagon. The first electrified tram line was opened as late as 1881 in a Berlin suburb on the basis of designs by the Russian inventor

Videotape recorder

Alexander Poniatoff (Poniatov), a student of the founding father of Russian aviation Nikolay Zhukovsky, started the Ampex company in the United States and worked there in the 1950s. The company succeeded in producing the first quality video signal recorder. Ampex kept its lead in the market for professional magnetic recording of video for half a century and global electronics giants had to use Poniatoff’s patents to produce home video equipment.

Radio

Alexander Popov, a professor of physics, announced the invention of a system for wireless communications at a lecture at St Petersburg University in April 1885 and displayed the world’s first radio set. He was unable to publish his work though because he worked for a military institution. Italian Guglielmo Marconi conducted similar experiments at about the same time – his article was published in 1897. Unlike Popov’s, Marconi’s invention was commercialised fast, so they still argue in the West over who invented radio first.

Helicopter

Igor Sikorsky was another Russian inventor whose potential was fully realized abroad. In 1910, he created the prototype of a rotor-driven device, which successfully got off the ground. In 1912, he created the first hydroplane in the world and then the first multiple-engine aircraft. After the 1917 Revolution in Russia, he had to emigrate to the US, where he established his own company, Sikorsky Aero Engineering Company, using a contribution from remarkable Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Sikorsky’s first experimental helicopter designed in the United States got off the ground in September 1939. The design of that machine, which has been considered a classic helicopter design for more than fifty years now, has been used for almost 95% helicopters built around the world. In 1942, Sikorsky created a two-seater helicopter. 

Solar cell

It is owing to discoveries by Russian physicist Alexander Stoletov that we enjoy television today. In the late 1880s, he produced a theoretical justification of photoelectric effect through a series of experiments. Photoelectric effect formed the basis for the production of solar cells, which are broadly used in practice now. Stoletov created the first solar cell based upon outer photoelectric effect and discovered the proportionality between the intensity of light and photo induced current.

Transformers

You cannot have a power grid without transformers. Transformers were invented, built and put into operation by Russian electrical engineer Pavel Yablochkov and physicist Ivan Usagin. The solution that made it to history books as the “distribution of light” was produced by Yablochkov in the mid-1870s. The invention, which consisted of a transformer and condenser, was displayed in Paris and St Petersburg and, as early as 1882, the open-core transformer was patented in France by inventors Lucien Gaulard and Josiah Willard Gibbs.

Yoghurt

Although cultured milk products appeared centuries ago, it was Russian scientist Mechnikov who first theorised their positive impact on longevity. Back in 1910, he suggested that, in order to live longer, a person should consume fermented milk products, which reduce putrefactive processes in the intestines. Mechnikov proved that Bulgaria had the biggest percentage of long-livers – and it is in Bulgaria that yoghurt is believed to have been born, because ancient Thrace was the first country to ever mix milk with ferments. 

Television

Vladimir Zworykin was another Russian engineer whose inventions debuted in the United States. He came up with the main invention of the 20th century – electronic television. He applied for a television patent in the US in 1923. Six years later, he developed the kinescope, a high-vacuum television receiver tube, and two years later, he created the first transmitting device, which he called an iconoscope.

Petrol cracking

You cannot imagine living in the modern world without a car but no car would be possible without petrol. Cracking is a process that allows petrol to be produced from heavy or high-boiling factions of oil and it is owing to cracking that we can produce the enormous amounts of petrol modern cars consume. Cracking allows up to 70% of crude oil to be turned into petrol, while standard distillation methods provide 10% to 20%. The cracking method was invented by Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov, who also created the first industrial cracking unit in 1891.

Synthetic rubber

It’s hard to envisage modern economy without synthetic rubber.Man-made rubber is mostly used to make tyres for vehicles, aircraft and bicycles. Artificial rubber is also used in making seals, insulation, medical devices and in many other areas. Synthetic rubbers are also indispensable for producing solid rocket propellants. The first commercially viable artificial rubber was polybutadiene resin, synthesised by the method developed by Russian chemist Sergei Lebedev. He obtained the first specimens of synthetic rubber in 1910. His book “Research in polymerisation of by-ethylene hydrocarbons”, printed in 1913, provided the foundations for commercial artificial rubber synthesis.

Grain harvester

Andrei Vlasenko ran an estate in Tver province. In 1868, he invented the world’s first grain harvester, which he called a “reaper-thrasher”. It was mostly wooden and was powered by three horses. The machine had a capacity of twenty 19th century peasants. Vlasenko built two machines, powered by two horses each and driven by a single operator, which worked on the landowner’s fields in Tver province for many years. Only a decade later, American newspapers delivered breaking news about a thrasher built in California – newsmen called it a “combine harvester”. The first American harvester was similar to Vlasenko’s machine in terms of its operating principle, but was powered by 24 mules and driven by seven operators.

Today we live in a world where there is practicallyall that a person can desire. But it was not always so. Mankind has long and painstakingly created such conditions. It is difficult to imagine that people used to do without the modern benefits of civilization. Russia, of course, is the locomotive of progress. Everyone of our great country should know about its achievements and be proud of them. This is our dignity, heritage and history.

Lamp and radio

Scientific achievements of Russia are valued all over the world,since they made a huge contribution to the development of the civilization of all modern mankind. Among them there are those that we know about from the school bench, but there are known mainly in narrow circles (with their value not less).

Today, there is an electric bulb in eachhouse, but it was not always so. The first light bulbs lit up thanks to Russian engineers PN Yablochkov and AN Lodygin (1874). Initially, their invention was not recognized at home, and they were forced to develop their ideas in a foreign land. Of course, a lot of time and effort was required by scientists to create a small lighting device. A significant contribution to the improvement of the lamp was made by the American Thomas Edison, but Russian scientists were the first to make it!

Radio is the achievement of Russia, thanks to the ingeniousphysics and electrical engineering Popov A.S. (1895). To overestimate the importance of radio in the history of mankind is very difficult. Abroad, Alexander Stepanovich’s championship is often challenged, but there are facts confirming this. By the way, the invention and the contribution of the professor were recognized in Russia immediately, for which he was awarded.

Aircraft and helicopter

Achievement of Russia and the contribution of its husbands to developmentmodern aviation are of a breakthrough nature. Russian military leader and inventor Mozhaysky A.F. for decades, ahead of his Western associates in the creation and successful use of an aeronautical vessel. In 1876, he was the first in the world to fly comfortably on a kite he created, and later introduced the world’s first steam-powered aircraft (1882).

The greatest aircraft designer Sikorsky II invented by the list of «Great achievements of Russia». His fate was such that he was forced to immigrate to the US, so the Americans are also proud of the results of the works of this ingenious designer. Igor Ivanovich was the first in the world to create a four-engined aircraft (1913), a heavy four-engine bomber and passenger aircraft (1914), a transatlantic hydroplane and a single-rotor helicopter (1942). It is worth noting that he embodied his latest ideas in the US, although the inventor there had a very difficult time.

1. Literature. World classics includes the works of Russian writers: Pushkin AS, Tolstoy LV, Bulgakov MA, Dostoyevsky FM, Chekhov AP, Solzhenitsyn AI, Akhmatova AA , Tsvetaeva M.I. and other talented authors. Not one generation has grown and will still grow on these works. Domestic literature is the pride and soul of a Russian person.

   

2. Music. Of great importance for the development of world classical music were Russian composers: Glinka MI, Borodin AP, Mussorgsky MP, Tchaikovsky PI, Rimsky-Korsakov NA, Skryabin AN, Rachmaninov S B. List of the most significant achievements of Russia in 2014:

1. Winter Olympic Games in Sochi (holding).

2. Scientists from St. Petersburg developed a unique shell-generator of plasma, which produced a real sensation in the oil business of the whole world.

3. New diesel fuel, developed by Russian scientists for the military, is frost-resistant (there are no analogues with such indicators in the world yet).

4. Scientists of St. Petersburg have developed a portable device for restoring blood circulation in the body. The principle of action is similar to the work of an artificial heart. This unique device will be installed in ambulances and will save millions of lives.

This is only a brief list of cases in which Russiaright proud. This list does not include achievements in such areas as sports, politics, education, the military sphere and much more. But what is the most important achievement of Russia? There have been so many great discoveries in history that have moved the development of all mankind, but what can be considered a priority ?! The answer is obvious.

The most important achievement of Russia, its pride andstrength — talented people who love their country. The fate of many geniuses is very difficult, even tragic, but they continued to create, invent and achieve the most daring purposes, because otherwise they could not. Mankind, using the ideas and results of the works of our compatriots, should say «thank you» to them. Russia has something to be proud of, every self-respecting citizen should know this.

It
is very difficult for me to single out any one invention, so I would like to
tell you about the most important.

The
history of inventions includes everything that was created by man for thousands
of years of existence, but we want to highlight the most important inventions
of mankind. Together with the physiology of man, his intellect also evolved. Of
course, it is very difficult to choose the most important and necessary from
the huge number and variety of man’s inventions, but we nevertheless made our
rating of the 12 most important inventions in the history of mankind.

Gunpowder
and Firearms

There
are persistent numerous opinions that gunpowder was invented in China. His
appearance led to the invention of fireworks and early examples of firearms.
Since the beginning of time people have divided the territories and protected
them, and for this they always needed some kind of weapon. First there were
sticks, then axes, then bows, and after the appearance of gunpowder and
firearms. Now many types of weapons have been created for military purposes,
from simple pistols to the latest intercontinental missiles that are launched
from a submarine. In addition to the army, weapons are also used by civilians
for their protection and protection of anything, and for hunting.

Car

It
is difficult to imagine a modern world without cars. People go to work, to
dacha, to vacation, to food, to movies and restaurants. Different types of
vehicles are used for delivery of goods, construction of buildings and for many
other purposes. The first cars resembled carriages without horses and moved

Mobile
phone

Some
15 years ago, in order to communicate with someone from a distance, it was necessary
to go home and call a fixed line or look for the nearest telephone booth and
coins or tokens for a call. If you were on the street, and you urgently needed
to call an ambulance or firefighters, you had to shout in the hope that someone
from the nearest houses would hear and call where you need to or quickly run

Cinema

The
invention of cinematography was the beginning of that movie and television that
we have today. The first motion pictures were black and white and without
sound, they appeared only a few decades after the photo. Today, cinema is an
incredible sight. Thanks to hundreds of people working on it, computer
graphics, decorations, makeup and many other ways and technologies of cinema
now can be like a fairy tale. Television, portable video cameras, surveillance
cameras and in general everything related to video exists thanks to the
invention of cinema.

Phone

A
simple fixed phone is in our rating above the mobile one because for the time
when the phone was invented it was a huge breakthrough. Before the phone, you
could communicate only by mail, by telegraph or by mail pigeons. Thanks to
the phone people no longer had to wait a few weeks for an answer to the letter,
there was no need to go somewhere or go to say something or find out. The
creation of the phone not only saved time, but also strength.

Electric
lamp

Before
the invention of the electric bulb, people sat in the dark in the evenings or
lit candles, lamps in oil or some kind of torches as in ancient times. The
invention of a light bulb made it possible to get rid of the danger posed by
lighting fixtures using fire. Thanks to the electric bulb, the rooms were
illuminated well and evenly. Now we understand the importance of a light bulb
only when we are disconnected from electricity.

Antibiotics

Before
the invention of antibiotics, some diseases that are now treated at home can
kill a person. The development and production of antibiotics began actively at
the end of the XIX century. The invention of antibiotics helped a person to
overcome a variety of diseases that were previously considered incurable. In
the 30s of the 20th century every year dysentery carried away tens of thousands
of human lives. Also, there was no cure for pneumonia, sepsis, typhoid. The man
could not defeat the pulmonary plague, it always led to death. With the
invention of antibiotics, many serious diseases have not become scary.

Wheel

At
first glance, you can not say that the wheel is a very important invention, but
thanks to this particular device, many other inventions were invented, such as
a car or a train. The wheel significantly reduces the energy costs of moving
