Why do we love theatre?

I think every theatre fan bears his own answer. For lots of people theatre has become a kind of magic where actors transform into various characters. A dramatic performance was the only chance to show somebody else’s life for societies without cinematograph. Life of others is always interesting to us. We compare it to ours and we are happy if our life is better as well as we feel sorrow if our life is worse. That is why theatre became so popular in ancient Greece and then has spread into other countries. At present almost every country boasts at least one theatre with a stock company.

Fortunately Russia, my native country, is considered to be one of the leading states.

The history of Russian playhouse can name such well-known play writers as Chekhov, Ostrovsky, Bulgakov and many others. Today their dramas obtain new representation in the foreign producers’ hands. We also have a galaxy of brilliant actors who put their heart into every role they play.

Moscow is not only the political but also the theatrical capital of Russia.

The city numbers about 154 theatres of various styles.The most famous of them are The Bolshoi, The Mali, The Lenkom, The Vakhtangov Theatre, The Sovremennik and lots of others.

Their troops are highly expected in all parts of the country and in the world when they move out for tours.

Speaking about Russian theatre we should mention Sankt-Petersburg with its more than one hundred of stages. In 1756 by the law ofElizabeth 1 the city sighted the first Russian professional public playhouse for tragedies and comedies. Since then theatres began to invade Russian cities and towns. It became a very popular kind of entertainment for rich. Though the tickets for some setting are still extremely high, at the moment almost every person is able to buy a ticket to a theatre. Despite of the popularity of cinematograph Russians still show passion towards theatre performances.

When it comes to drama, one fabulous name can’t be forgotten —  the name of William Shakespeare, a great English writer. His plays like “Romeo and Juliet”, “Othello”, “King Macbeth” are well-known all over the world. Shakespeare lived in the period of time when English theatre was just starting up. There were many troops but no buildings for them. Shakespeare’s «Globe» was one of the first theaters in London. Until the arrival of Bernard Show nobody could beat the popularity of Shakespeare’s compositions. English theatre can’t name as much famous writers and actors as Russian theater.

They tend more to musicals and operas. For example Covent Garden, Royal Albert Hall and London Coliseum are the largest London theatres designed for operas and other musical performances.

As to me, I like to go to the theatre with my class or with my friends. We often visit Sovremennik, the Moscow Art Theatre and some others. I believe it helps me to be well educated. Furthermore I really admire the plays of our famous actors.

To tell the truth I don’t understand some modern settings but on the whole I favor theatrical experiment and fresh ideas.

Я думаю, у каждого фаната театра имеется свой ответ на этот вопрос. Для многих людей театр-это что-то на подобии магии, где актёры превращаются в различных героев. Театральное представление- это единственная возможность показать обществу чью-либо жизнь без кинематографа. Жизнь других людей всегда интересна нам. Мы сравниваем её с нашей, и мы счастливы, если наша жизнь лучше, также мы чувствуем сожаление, если наша жизнь хуже. Именно поэтому театр стал таким популярным в Древней Греции и затем стал популярен в других странах. На сегодняшний момент почти каждая страна хвастается наличием хотя бы одного театра с постоянной театральной труппой.

К счастью, Россия, моя родная страна, считается одной из лидирующих государств. История русского театра может назвать имена таких известных драматургов как Чехов, Островский, Булгаков и многие другие. На сегодняшний момент их драмы получают новое представление, благодаря иностранным продюсерам. У нас также имеется плеяда блестящих актёров, которые вкладывают душу в каждую роль, которую они играют. Москва не только политическая, но и театральная столица России. В городе насчитывается около 154 театров различных стилей. Самые знаменитые из них — Большой Театр, Малый Театр, Театр Ленком, Вахтангов Театр, Театр Современник и многие другие. Их труппы с нетерпением ожидают во всех городах страны и мира, когда они выезжают на гастроли. Говоря о русском театре, нам следует упомянуть город Санкт- Петербург, в котором находится больше ста театральных сцен. В 1756 году по указу Елизаветы I был учреждён первый Российский профессиональный публичный театр трагедий и комедий. С тех пор театры стали охватывать города России. Театры стали очень популярным развлечением для богатых. Хотя билеты на некоторые преставления в театре очень дорогие, почти каждый может купить билет в театр. Несмотря на популярность кинематографии, в России наблюдается страсть к театральным постановкам.

Что касается драмы, то одно замечательное имя не может быть забыто, это имя Уильям Шекспир, великий английский писатель. Его пьесы такие, как «Ромео и Джульетта», «Отелло», «Король Макбет» известны во всём мире. Шекспир жил в то время, когда английский театр только появлялся. Было много театральных трупп, но не было зданий для них. «Шекспировский Глобус» стал одним из самых первых театров в Лондоне. До прибытия Бернанда Шоу никто не мог превзойти популярность Шекспировских произведений. Английские театры не могут назвать столько знаменитых писателей и актёров, как театры России. Они были больше склоны к мюзиклам и операм. Например, Ковент Гарден, Королевский Альберт-Холл, Лондонский Колизей самые большие театры Лондона, созданные для опер и других концертов.

Что касается меня, то я люблю ходить в театр с моим классом или  моими друзьями. Мы часто посещаем Театр Современник, Московский Художественный Театр и другие. Я верю, что это помогает мне стать образованным. Кроме того, я действительно обожаю пьесы наших знаменитых актёров. По правде говоря, я не понимаю некоторые современные постановки, но в общем, я благосклонно отношусь к походам в театр и свежим идеям.

At the Theatre

There are not many theatres in my town, but they are all very popular with the public. I am a theatre lover, too. As for me, I prefer drama to all other theatres, but I also like opera and musical comedy.

I’ll never forget my first visit to the Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous ballet “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovskyi. We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show. At 7 sharp the performance began. From the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The costumes were fine. The dancing and music were thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it. When the curtain fell at the end of the performance, there came a storm of applause. It seemed that it would never end. The dancers received call after call. They were presented with large bouquets of flowers. We also applauded enthusiastically. The performance was a great success.

В моем городе не так много театров, но все они очень популярны среди населения. Я тоже любитель театра. Что касается меня, я предпочитаю драматический всем другим театрам, но я также люблю оперу и музыкальную комедию.

Я никогда не забуду мой первый визит в Театр оперы и балета. Мой друг и я хотели посмотреть знаменитый балет Чайковского «Лебединое озеро». Мы купили билеты заранее и пришли в театр за полчаса до шоу. Ровно в 7 началось представление. С первой же минуты я был глубоко впечатлен всем, что увидел на сцене. Костюмы были хороши. Танцы и музыка были захватывающими. Балет показался мне сказкой. Я никогда не видел ничего прекраснее. Мой друг и я наслаждались каждой минутой. Когда занавес опустился в конце спектакля, раздался взрыв аплодисментов. Казалось, что этому не будет конца. Танцоров вызывали снова и снова. Им подарили большие букеты цветов. Мы также аплодировали с энтузиазмом. Спектакль имел большой успех.

There are more than 13 theatres in our city. They show dramas, tragedies, and comedies. To tell you the truth I’m a great theatre lover. I try to see the most interesting performances in our greatest theatres like Alexandrinsky theatre. As a rule I go to the evening performances (usually they begin at 7 p.m.) It is rather difficult for me to book the tickets beforehand because the performances are very famous.

Sometimes we come to the theatre and see the sign «House full», but there are many people standing near and asking for the extra-tickets. I usually go there with my friends or parents. So we leave our coats in the cloak-room and bought a programme to know who is in the cast. We are shown our seats. As for usual we take places in the stalls, but also people like to watch the performance from the boxes, balconies and pits. After the 3 ring the light go down and the curtain drops.

Last time I was in the theater on the play, wrote by Maugham. It was named «Theatre». It was first night. But all performed so realistically, so true to life that I began to feel for them like in real life. All the play, the acting, the staging were beyond any description. The audience in times couldn’t tear their eyes away from the stage. All the actors had wonderful dresses and the scenery was out of ordinary. The spectators were deeply impressed by the play and the cast. I have never seen the audience applauded so much before.

Many people couldn’t help throwing flowers on the stage. It was a play I would remember for a long. In the beginning of the story she was young, unpracticed actress. She worried before the performance: her heart was beating, hands were crowing, but when she came into the stage, her voice became firm. («But now, after having passed through the ordeal so many times, she had acquired certain nonchalance»).

Years passed and we see Julia: she is 46. But she still has lovely figure, long legs, wasp waist, and rich low voice. She went through the trial of love, passion, devotion and work. It seems to me, that the author sympathizes to her, because she managed with each difficult situation. She became the «cold» actress. She knows that she was the best, what she had to do to stay the best. In my opinion she learned to live as she likes and at the same time she made everybody happy. Julia was a crack jack, so she didn’t let the emotions take over her. She lived the life of her hero, but also the actress always remembered her teacher’s words: «Don’t be natural, only seem natural».

The leading female role was played by a young actress. And I would like to describe her. At first I would like to tell so words about her appearance. She had a lovely figure, everyone admitted that, she was fairly tall for a women, she had long legs. It was a pity that she had never had a chance to play Rosaline.

She always wanted to play Shakespeare, but even her Beatrice hadn’t been loved by the critics. It was so because of her low, rich voice, perfect for long passages and emotional roles, but not for the blank verse. Julia was very proud of her beauty, even when she was 46. Some people can say Julia was a «cold» actress, but I can’t agree with them. She could make the audience be completely carried away by her speech and articulation. In bygone years she was intolerably nervous by the first night, but having passed through the ordeals so many times she had acquired certain nonchalance.

After the play, if she was satisfied by her work, Julia pleased, exited and happy went to her dressing-room. In life Julia was a businesslike and not only in life, but in her job, family and even love. She loved her husband until she needed him; maybe she was artificial in her feeling. After all she was very talented actress and this role wasn’t easy for playing.

Her attitude to people I can share on several parts: people, whom she loves, people, whom she hates, people, who adore her. For people whom she loves she could do everything (she thinks a lot about her child and she make everything to make him happy), others were like a power to her self-importance, those whom she hates she could vilify. Julia was the best actress, so she didn’t let anybody to attempt on her place.

Shakespeare told: «The world is the theatre and we are the actors.» I think I can agree with his words. During all our life we play different roles — we are children at home, pupils at school and customers in the shop. Life gives us a great variety of scenery and situations. For all our life we depend on people, surrounded us, happenings, time, and place where we are now, just like an actor depends on the director, and script. But I need to add that our life can’t be fully called the theatre because I think life is much more interesting, dangerous and unexpected.

Many people believe that it’s much more convenient to watch a performance on TV at home, because you don’t have to bother about the tickets, a baby-sitter and transport and so on. As for me I think that it is dull and boring to death. The main part of the theatre and theatrical performance are the atmosphere of a play, scenery and halls.

If you see it on TV you only see the movement, just like bad film and you only waste your time. The other thing is cinema. The films are specially made to attract public by scenery, beauty of animation and special effects. As for me-I go to the theatre to see the emotions, to the cinema to see well-made beautiful movement and switch on the TV-set to see news.
