A career is much more than choosing a job or occupation. It’s more like choosing a lifestyle, or as high school teachers and career advisers like to say: “choosing your future”. Perhaps the most important advice for young graduates is that they shouldn’t decide anything on this matter until they are completely ready. Taking a year off might not appeal to the parents, but it is a much better option than choosing to go down the wrong career path. So what are the most important criteria to consider when making a career choice?

Job Availability

It’s important to choose occupations that will equip future graduates with business skills which are easy to monetize on the market. Although “knowledge is power”, it seems pointless to spend both time and money on studying if there are no possibilities for finding work in the desired industry. That’s why job availability is very important to future students. Before choosing their career path, graduates should measure the ratio of available candidates for job openings. These ratios change during time. For example, who knew that companies are going to employ so many community managers and app developers fifteen years ago, or that milkmen are going to deliver bottles only to hipster coffee houses? That’s why it is important to choose an occupation that can easily adapt to future changes on the market. Lists of deficient occupations in Australia are very useful when deciding on this and it can be found on various government and educational websites.

Earnings and Security

Although some people state that “they would work for free if needed”, they mostly do that for sycophant purposes. Every type of work should be fairly paid and that’s why it’s very important for graduates to check what earnings and security each occupation brings before making a career choice. This information can be acquired on Australia’s Bureau of Statistics website and similar to job availability, average salaries for different occupations might drastically change in time.

Education

Most careers also require certain education and before applying for a college or university, graduates should know what their desired occupation is and what steps they need to take to qualify for it. Studying in one and finding a job in another industry is a huge waste of both time and money. This is a common occurrence, especially when it comes to social sciences and culture studies. Australian universities and colleges are much more open and accessible to graduates from working and middle class families nowadays. There are plenty of government loan programs that can help gifted students to pursue academic careers in various industries. Some of those programs provide loans to students that can be repaid when they get employed at a desired position. Since getting these loans can be a bit complicated it is advisable to search for some VET-FEE HELP assistance websites online, before applying for them.

Personal Fit

Each occupation has different characteristics and these can greatly influence graduates’ decision on which career to pursue. People who are scared of heights are definitely not going to build skyscrapers and graduates that think they can’t handle working with big amounts of money won’t apply for financial studies and get a job in a bank. In addition to this, some careers include lots of traveling and constant movement, which is great for more adventurous people. Responsibility levels are also important, as well as possibilities for promotion or personal growth. The bottom line is: people should love their job, and if performing their usual job activities brings them satisfaction, they’ll be much better workers.

Other Life Decisions

Choosing a career is a very important decision, but there are some other decisions that can also shape someone’s life and they all should influence one another. Starting a family, getting a mortgage or moving to another state, country or continent can greatly influence somebody’s career path. It’s hard for family-oriented people to work like travel bloggers, truck drivers or flight attendants, and it is just as hard for young and restless professionals to work from office, for a fixed salary and no opportunities for promotion. So, choose your career wisely, because this decision will go a long way to improve your Monday mornings.

A. Little is known for certain about how guinea pigs were first introduced to Europe and North America as a domestic pet, but they most probably came during the 16th century. Holland, Portugal and Spain had colonies in South America, and the explorers brought to Europe gold and precious gems, along with other unusual and exciting finds. Colourful parrots became very popular status symbols in the homes of the wealthy, and with them came the guinea pig and other animals previously unknown in Europe.

B. Many species of wild animals are in danger of complete extinction. This is usually due to loss of habitat as a result of human expansion, or it could be due to excessive hunting. A good, modern zoo has a valuable role to play in assisting with the protection of endangered species. This is both through education of the general public in the importance of conservation in general, and through breeding programmes to increase the population of endangered species in captivity and then reintroduce them into the wild.

C. The guinea pig is today one of the world’s most popular pets, ranking only a little way behind the rabbit. Though called guinea pigs, these animals are not pigs, nor do they come from Guinea. Why Guinea, then? Some say they could have originally changed hands at the cost of a guinea (twenty-one shillings — very expensive!). As for the “pig”, an explanation is much easier to guess — they run and squeal much as little piglets do!

D. Rabbits are among the most popular pets to keep due to their affectionate nature and love of cuddles. To show they are happy, they often grind their teeth softly when being petted, similar to cats purring. In general, rabbits are timid, non-aggressive and sociable with each other. With gentle handling they are generally quite tame. They are playful and entertaining to watch, but they need a great deal of interaction with their owners. Their cage should be relatively big, but they need some playtime outside it as well.

E. For a long time guinea pigs were used as experimental animals. In 1890, the antitoxin for diphtheria was discovered using guinea pigs in the research, and as a result the lives of millions of children have been saved. In 1907 vitamin С was discovered due to guinea pigs. Like humans they cannot produce the vitamin and need it supplied in their diet. The guinea pig’s wide variety of hair types and colours has also made them a prime choice for studies of genetics and heredity. Later they were replaced by rats and mice.

F. Security at Denver International Airport tries to protect cars from vandalism and theft, but there’s a new threat at its expansive parking lot. Ravenous rabbits. The animals are causing hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars in damage to cars by devouring the wires under the hood. At least 100 rabbits are removed every month, but the problem persists. The airport is surrounded by prairie, and the rabbits are seeking warmth and food in the parked vehicles.

G. Our mission at Wild Adventures Zoo is to bring family entertainment back to Las Vegas, in an educational manner. Teaching respect for animals through hands-on applications, workshops and conservation efforts, as well as helping injured and abandoned wildlife and exotic pets, is the reason Wild Adventures Zoo was created. Our focus is on educating the public through fun and exciting activities that allow them to interact with the animals.

Have you ever thought about cities of the future? Clean streets, flying cars and robots doing all the work? Almost half of the world’s population currently lives in cities, and by 2050 that is predicted to increase to 75%, but what kind of city will they be living in? Today, most city dwellers are dissatisfied because they have to live in overcrowded and polluted surroundings. Traffic jams are getting worse, queues longer, power cuts more common, bad air quality more threatening to human health.
There are various ideas about how a future city should look. Some of these revolve around the idea that better means greener. Experts predict carbon-neutral cities full of electric vehicles and bike-sharing schemes, with air quality so much improved that office workers can actually open their windows for the first time. Visions of a green city often include skyscrapers where living and office space comprises high-rise green-houses and vegetables growing on the roofs. Behind such greenification of cities lies a very pressing need.
Technology companies such as IBM believe that the best cities will become networks. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, IBM has already built an operations centre, which it describes as the “nerve centre” of the city.

The history of radio
Radio started with the discovery of “radio waves”. Radio waves are electromagnetic waves that can transmit music, speech, pictures and other data 26) invisibly through the air.
Many devices work by using electromagnetic waves, including radio, microwaves, cordless phones, remote controlled toys, television broadcasts, and more.
During the 1860s, Scottish physicist, J.C. Maxwell predicted the 27) existence of radio waves.
In 1886, German 28) scientist, H.R. Hertz demonstrated that rapid variations of electric current could be projected into space in the form of radio waves.
G. Marconi, an Italian 29) inventor, sent and received his first radio signal in Italy in 1895.
By 1899 he flashed the first 30) wireless signal across the English Channel and two years later received the letter “S”, telegraphed from England to Newfoundland.
This was the first 31) successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message.

Tests and test-takers
You don’t have to be a psychologist to guess how students are feeling during a test or an exam. Just by observing their body language you can tell whether they will pass or 32) fail.
Just before the test starts, they will often 33) tell silly things and try nervously to hide their nervousness. A little tension or stress before and during a test is normal. When the examinees get their papers, some of them will 34) smile to themselves — a sure sign they know the answers. 35) However, if they feel the exam is hard, you may hear how disappointed they are or see how annoyed they are when they frown. Some will try to glance quickly at their neighbours’ tests, and some will yawn to pretend that they are bored or tired, while, in fact, they are just waiting for the teacher to turn 36) away so that one of their mates can quietly 37) whisper the answers to them. When they finish, some will immediately dash out as if they were desperate to check their answers in their course book, while others will 38) stroll out slowly, relaxed and sure they have passed.

Even in a tight job market, it’s not always in your best interest to accept the first job offer you receive. And what if you’re faced with more than one appealing option? Perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to score multiple job offers or maybe you’ve got one offer in hand and another opportunity (or more) that looks promising but is still in the interview stage.

This is a good problem to have, but a dilemma all the same. It’s important to prioritize what is most important to you and evaluate how the offer at hand aligns with your top priorities and your other current options.

Here are some guidelines for evaluating that job offer and making a smart decision.

The Money Question

If money isn’t a key issue for you, you are very fortunate. However, most people find that their financial situation strongly influences their job decision making.

When evaluating whether to accept a job offer, finances must be considered in two significant ways:

1) Can you afford to pass up an uninspiring offer and wait for something better?

If you have been between gigs for a while, it may be necessary to compromise on waiting for your dream job and accept something that will help you pay the bills right now. If finances are tight, you may also be more likely to consider a less attractive compensation package because some cash flow is better than none.

That’s not to say it’s fair or right. Only you can decide if earning money right away must be prioritized over the other factors listed below.

2) How does the compensation offered compare to your other options?

For every job offer, you must also consider whether the compensation offered is fair and appealing. It’s not just about the numbers on your paycheck, it’s about your quality of life and feeling valued as an employee.

Remember that salary is just one part of the compensation equation. You must also consider health benefits, paid time off, 401(k), and other factors. There may also be room to negotiate from the first offer — either for more money or for additional perks.

Look at salary research on Payscale.com to make sure that the offer is fair based on market averages and your level of experience. This research will also give you some ammunition if you want to try to negotiate a better deal.

Next, do the math and make sure you understand how well you’ll be able to live if you accept the job. Think long and hard before accepting an offer that seems unfair (nobody wants to be a bargain hire and it could cause resentment later) or could lead to financial hardship down the road.

At the same time, don’t allow yourself to be swayed by a big paycheck if the job is a bad fit in other important ways. Research by The Journal of Happiness Studies (yes, this is a real publication) shows that money increases happiness only when it allows people to move from poverty to about $50,000 per year (I have to wonder if the figure should be a little higher in New York City and other high-cost-of-living cities). Beyond that, more money doesn’t have a significant impact on happiness.

The Job

Naturally, you will also want to evaluate the position itself and the work you will be doing for 8+ hours per day for the foreseeable future.

  • Do you get excited thinking about the work?
  • Does the position allow you to use the skills you most enjoy? How often?
  • Do you believe in the company and its products/services? Are you passionate about making a contribution?
  • What role will you play in the organization? How will you interact with coworkers?
  • Are there any quality of life considerations to consider? Think about commute time, expected overtime, flexibility options, and related factors.
  • Is it important for you to have visibility, leadership, an impressive title? And, to what extent does the position offer these things?

The Management

Some jobs look great on paper — until you meet the manager. A great manager can make a tough job rewarding, but a bad manager can make even a dream job stressful.

Your direct manager will have the most influence on your day-to-day work life.

  • Is he someone you can work with?
  • Does he show respect to his team members?
  • Does he have a good reputation in the industry?
  • What is his management style and how does it fit with your preferences?
  • Do his expectations seem reasonable?

The Culture/Atmosphere

It can be difficult to get a true sense of a company’s culture until you work there. However, if you look for hints and ask good questions during the final rounds of  interviews, you can get a pretty good idea of how they operate. You can also learn a lot from seeking out former employees of the company in your network.

Some culture questions to consider:

  • Are the company’s values in keeping with yours?
  • Do company leaders prioritize issues you deem important?
  • Does the company emphasize training, mobility, and promotion from within?
  • What kind of personalities seem to thrive?
  • After visiting the office, can you see yourself working in that environment?

Future Prospects

In today’s job market, no position is forever. With each step you take, you must evaluate how it will position you for the future.

  • Will this job keep you sharp?
  • Will the day-to-day responsibilities let you hone skills that will make you even more marketable in the future?
  • Does this position come with increased responsibility?
  • Will working at this company give your resume added credibility?
  • Does the job give you a “foot in the door” to make a desired career change?
  • Will you have access to useful training and networking opportunities?

When evaluating whether to accept a job offer, all five of the categories above should be considered. However, you must also prioritize according to personal importance. The compensation may be your biggest concern right now —  or perhaps after years at a staid company, you need a more innovative culture.

Think about which questions are critical for you and where you would be willing to make sacrifices.  While the choice can be difficult, having a clear list of priorities and concrete answers can help guide you to the job that was meant for you.

10

1. Use Silence
2. Gestures and Posture
3. Audience Awareness
4. Sensible Dress

5. Distinct and Audible Speech
6. Consider Context
7. Speaking Through Eyes
8. Strategic Listening

A. The first thing that a good speaker does is looks at the audience and takes a pause before beginning his speech. This helps to create a good impression on the audience. Throughout the speech, the speaker should maintain eye contact with the listeners, otherwise they will feel that they are being ignored and it is quite likely that they also ignore whatever he is trying to convey.

B. Proper variation in emotion and tempo of the voice improves the quality of performance. Accurate pronunciation of words with due stresses wherever required must be done. One more important thing while communicating is that your voice must be clear and loud enough for the audience to hear it. A loud voice can be a strong point for being an effective speaker.

C. Concentrate on your ideas and do not get distracted by the activities performed by the audience, for example, smiling or whispering. To make your communication successful get the clue about the listeners and their interests. Think over the age, sex and background of the people. See whether the audience is patient enough to handle you for hours. Check out if they are friendly or hostile.

D. Facial expressions reveal what thoughts are running through a person’s mind. So while communicating, make sure that your facial expressions reveal your interest for the subject on which you are communicating. The body movements while speaking must coordinate with your convincing power. They must add to the things which are more effectively caught visually than verbally.

E. If you are trying to improve your own communication, concentrate on ways to make your nonverbal signals match the level of formality necessitated by the situation. Some situations require more formal behaviour that might be interpreted very differently in any other setting. So when you are communicating with others, always take into account the situation in which the communication occurs.

F. Don’t be afraid to pause and breathe. Listeners need time to reflect on what you are saying. Just like we need ‘white space’ and punctuation on the written page, we need pauses when we speak. Talking non-stop is a huge drawback. Having the confidence to pause for a few seconds in between sentences commands attention rather than diverts it.

G. The appearance plays an important role in presenting ourselves to society. The people who wear clothes suitable to their body structure look attractive. A person’s physical appearance creates a definite impact on the communication process. Our clothes should not be too modern for the people whom we are interacting with. However, they should be able to create a positive impression on them.

Ever wonder A ____________? There’s actually quite a bit of science going on behind the scenes, with several components working together to bring you that digital-quality signal.

Your channel selection begins with the programming sources themselves. Companies like Showtime, HBO or Cinemax create their programming. Channel providers then purchase rights to this programming B ____________. Once a provider has their programming in place, they turn their attention to the broadcast centre to compress and convert the programming for satellite broadcast.

Your Dish Network Programming originally arrives as a digital stream of video, which is then compressed and converted through an encoder, typically using the MPEG2 format. This format reduces the overall size of the video, C ____________.

Once encoded, the video is then encrypted D ____________. After the video has been encrypted, it is sent to the provider’s satellite, strategically positioned in the sky.

The satellite itself uses a dish similar to your own satellite dish, to receive the video and send it back down to Earth. When the satellite sends the signal back down to Earth, it is picked up by your satellite dish, a small round antenna that receives the satellite’s broadcast and sends the video on to your satellite TV receiver.

The satellite TV receiver is that little black box that sits inside your home and allows you to choose E ____________. The receiver actually performs several important functions in the satellite viewing process, including the decryption of the signal itself. If you remember, the satellite signal was scrambled by the provider to protect it from un-paying consumers. Your receiver ‘de-scrambles’ that signal and converts the signal into a format F ____________. Together these amazing components create a vividly clear digital picture for over 200 satellite channels.

  1. which channel you want to watch
  2. including a power source and a computer system
  3. so that the broadcast can only be viewed by paying subscribers
  4. so that they can broadcast the shows via satellite
  5. how your satellite TV system works
  6. making it possible for a satellite to broadcast hundreds of channels at the same time

Jonte faced playtime with mixed feelings. When the bell rang, the others would rush into the open air, laughing and chattering. He felt left out. Yet these were also times he enjoyed. He could daydream about how things might have been.

Sometimes, though, he would watch the play not directly, that would have been impossible but on the big screen in one of the classrooms. Cheering on his friends made him feel part of the action. Even through the screens, however, watching for long often made his eyes hurt. Sunlight reflected strongly off the silvery turf, and even more from the trees around the ground. Players in motion trailed flashes of light which left black spots in his vision.

It was during a tense game that the summons came through. The shelter Principal, no less, wanted him at once in his office. Jonte uttered a mild swearword, though realising that he had already been watching too long — his head was aching. He made his way to the admin sector, signalled his arrival and went in. The Principal was behind his desk directly opposite the door. He was a small man, with metallic black hair cut short, silver-grey hands in constant fidgety motion and an expression of perpetual irritation. He waved in the direction of a chair placed in front of the desk.

But to Jonte’s surprise, there were several other people in the office. It was difficult at first to see them all clearly: not only had the effects of watching the match still to wear off, but the lighting was poor. Perhaps the Principal had only remembered at the last minute to close the heavy shutters and switch on a lamp.

As his vision returned, Jonte’s surprise grew. The six men and two women, who sat in a half circle to one side, judging by their job tags, were senior… very senior. Four were from the administration. The two women and the other two men seemed to be scientists from different research bodies.

Jonte was used to the fact that other people were inscrutable. He would have been able to tell from gazing in a mirror into his own eyes, with their blue irises surrounding dark pupils, how he was feeling, even if he hadn’t known yet. But other people’s eyes were silver discs, giving away nothing. He could sometimes see from the rest of their faces whether they were happy or sad, smiling or frowning; but their skin reflected the light, so that he could never be quite sure. From the way they were sitting, he thought, the visitors seemed anxious.

‘Jonte’, the Principal said, ‘these people have a favour to ask, and I hope you can help them. Please sit down.’ Jonte’s surprise grew. What possible favour could these people want from someone like him? ‘I’ll help if I can’, he said.

‘You know,’ the Principal went on, ‘that you have had to grow up here because going outside would be dangerous. Your body wouldn’t be able to withstand the radiation, even at night-time. Ordinary people are born with protection; but in your case…’

‘So you see’, one of the women interjected quickly, ‘you are really a very interesting young man. We want you to let us get to know you better.’

‘The people here,’ the Principal resumed, ‘are from the government’s science and research council. They would like to take you to one of their centres in the south, where the facilities are supposed to be better than we can provide. ’

‘But I’m quite happy here,’ Jonte felt he should say. ‘My friends…’

‘… and in any case,’ the Principal insisted a trifle sourly, ‘you wouldn’t be able to stay much longer. The shelter is being closed down.’

Jonte took this in. ‘So when do I have to go?’ he asked.

‘If you can pack your things together quickly,’ one of the men replied, ‘we should like to move you this evening … say in an hour. Is that all right?’

An hour! The suddenness of it all puzzled Jonte. His condition had been known from the moment he had been born when his parents so he had been told had handed him over for special care. But it also excited him. Apart from a short journey when he had been much younger to a medical centre, he could not remember ever having left the shelter. He didn’t really have much to pack anyway.

The Archipelago

In the remote southern seas there is a cluster of islands. Each island is inhabited by a different race of people. Although physically they look alike, you can tell them 32____ by their styles of dress and their distinctive dialects. Each island has its own unique form of architecture. The only similarity between them is that each race builds in a manner that is 33____ odds with the environment. On rocky hillsides there are wooden huts and in wooded valleys you can see towns of brick. Arid uplands are irrigated and planted with leafy gardens, whereas, on fertile plains, the parks are paved with stone. 34____ their differences, the islanders coexist peacefully. There is rivalry over certain fishing waters but it rarely 35____ to more than a few heated exchanges.

At the centre of the archipelago, perhaps in the most favoured spot of all, lies an island that has been deserted for many generations. It looks very different from the rest: darker, taller, silent. There is no obvious reason 36____ its abandonment as it has good soil and plenty of freshwater.

Long ago, it was inhabited by farmers and fishermen much like everywhere else in the archipelago, but everything changed when they started building the first wall. Making big decisions can be stressful, frustrating, and tough. There are many things to consider before making a big decision. It seems in your twenties especially that there are so many huge decisions to make: Deciding whether to move out of your family home, what to do after college, what you want your career to look like, whether you want to get married, whether you want to have children or a pet, whether or not you’d like to travel, or if you should start saving to own a property or a startup company.

When you’re in your late teens and early twenties your biggest decisions range from what breakfast you’ll cook the person you hooked up with last night to whether you really need another jello shot. With this in mind, it’s possible that you may not have had to tackle any big life decisions and in fact you may suck at making decisions in general.

This was totally me. Growing up I was quite the little people pleaser and I could never make a decision for fear of offending people, letting people down, or not being able to say, «no» to people. As you grow up, luckily your mindset changes in your twenties so I learned the hard way how to make great decisions. So in the hope of enhancing your decision making process, here are a bunch of things to consider before making important life changing decisions.

1. Ask Yourself What You Really Want

Does a corporate career sound like your dream job or would you prefer to launch your own startup? Do you want to get married and have children or would you prefer to spend some time soul searching and travelling the world? There are so many roads you can take in your life, so it helps to know what you really want before making any big decisions.

2. Ask For Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice; it’s not a sign of weakness, you’re just getting different viewpoints on a situation and someone may bring to light a point which you hadn’t thought of. Ask anyone — older relatives, younger relatives, friends, colleagues, strangers — the more points of view the better. Just be wary of the old saying, «Too many cooks spoil the broth.» Don’t let others’ opinions make your decision entirely for you.

3. Question Your Motives

Are you climbing the corporate ladder because you love your job or do you love the money? Maybe it’s neither of these things and you’re actually doing it because it makes your family proud. Before taking the big leap to quit a career which wasn’t right for me, I asked myself, «Am I doing this for me or for other people?» I soon realized I was working a job I didn’t like because it seemed like the sensible option and not because it was making me happy. The same can be said for people on the brink of other life decisions: Are you getting married because you can’t bare to live without your partner or because all of your friends are getting married? Are you thinking of having a baby because you can’t wait to be a mom or because you’re not sure what you want to do with your life yet? Asking yourself tough questions is really hard but it helps to get you to where you’re meant to be.

4. Weigh The Pros & Cons

There are pros and cons to everything in life but weighing up the pros and cons of your potential choices is a must. You could do this with a friend, family member, or partner as they could have a completely different perspective to you. You can weigh up the pros and cons of your future choices by talking them through with someone or literally listing them on paper, on your computer, or phone so you can see them in black and white. Even if your preferred choice has more cons than plus points, your heart may still be yearning for a particular direction and it’s definitely worth taking that into account. You may discover some feels which you didn’t even realize you had!

5. Ask Yourself If You Will Be Hurting Yourself Or Others With Your Future Decision

Although you may not realize it, every decision we make however small, has an impact on others. You may be deciding whether to stay in a demanding job that gives you little to no downtime for a huge raise. Yes, the money will be awesome but you might not get time to enjoy it and you may suffer from work related stress which could be bad for your health, which could also negatively affect the relationships you have with your loved ones. Obviously if you’re deciding whether to break up with someone or end a friendship for the right reasons, then you are probably going to hurt someone’s feelings in the immediate future, but in the end, it will be the best choice for both of you. Needlessly hurting someone with your choice is different.

6. Look At Your Potential Choices Without Rose Tinted Glasses

Recently, I was about to embark on a big decision, but I was still foolishly wearing my rose tinted spectacles. I was contemplating somewhere I’d love to live in the future; a beautiful village in the English countryside where I would live with my partner in a little cottage. Sounds idyllic, right? Well, after discussing the option with family and friends, I was alerted to the fact that I had actually been a little too optimistic about the whole thing. Apparently the village is super difficult to enter and exit in the winter months, which would make it treacherous for my partner to travel to work. The gorgeous cottages also benefitted from wonderful coal fires which actually meant that there would be no central heating, thus the winter months could get rather chilly. It’s great to be optimistic, but it’s not OK to let your optimism blind you to the negatives of a potentially life changing decision.

7. Imagine What Your Dream Life Would Entail & See If Your Preferred Choice Fits Into It

After graduating, I am sorry to report that I gave up on my dream to be a writer. I thought it seemed very unlikely that I would be able to support myself via writing and so I hopped from one job to another that paid the bills, yet crushed my creative spirit. Eventually I hit my breaking point. Over the series of a few months, I had my quarter-life crisis and realized that I was definitely not on the right path and I had squashed my dreams for too long. I made some really scary decisions which incorporated my dreams and I am now living a life that I love. I feel really proud of myself for taking what seemed like an enormous leap of faith into the unknown, trusting my gut, and putting faith in my dreams. If you’re anything like me, you will remain unfulfilled until you can live your dreams. It makes your decision making process a no-brainer if your potential choice enables you to live your dream life.

Follow these tips and hopefully your big decision will seem more like a mole hill than a mountain!

STEPS TO CHOOSING A CAREER

Steps to developing a career. Source: Ryerson

1. Introspection

You can’t decide on a career without knowing what job suits your personality best. The first thing you should do when you’re not sure about what career suits you is to have an in-depth and honest discussion with yourself.

Look deep and discover what special skills you have and what areas you excel best at. Every individual is different, and you may have some specific details about you that make you best suited for one job and not another.

When you have this self-examination, focus on whom you are as a person and not necessarily what you currently do. You can figure out what your passions are, what gets you interested, and what you naturally find yourself enjoying whether or not you get money for it.

After that, you should figure out how to use those skills to make money.

For example, you may love reading and creative writing. If you want to convert them to careers, you can decide to become a book critic, publisher, editor, and content creator. The options are endless once you find something you are good at doing.

To make it easier for you, you can check online for career tests, aptitude tests, or behavioral tests that can help you figure out what you love and what you’re good at.

They can also help you determine your strengths and weaknesses so that you can decide on the best workplace for you. Career counselors also help people out with these questions.

2. Make a list

If you use a good career test, you may be able to generate a long list of possible career options for you to consider. When you go through them, pick the relevant ones, and compile them into one long list.

You can identify the careers that appeared in several tests and keep them at the top of the list because they are your best matches.

Pro tip: Use several tests so you can have a lot more options and variety to pick from.

This list should contain any occupation that interests you, whether or not you think you’ll be good at it. You may find out that a career you didn’t consider previously is a good fit for you later on.

Ensure that you compile this list honestly: do not be swayed by monetary rewards. Picking a career based on salary is a good way to end up in a job field that you hate.

3. Explore the list

After whittling out the irrelevant careers, your list should be ready to explore. Start by researching each career as much as possible.

Allocate enough time for each profession and get as much information concerning the job, workplace, and opportunities in pursuing that as a career. You need to know what you are getting into regarding the position and any similar opportunity in the same field.

The most relevant information you need at this stage is what requirements, certifications, and education you need to venture into that career.

You should also find how much you need to do to keep that position and possibly move up in the field. Get as many job descriptions, salary details for different positions in the field, and labor market statistics and information.

A lot of this information is freely shared online, and you can find them on government websites. You can easily find out about the average earnings and requirements of different positions in that career, and figure out what positions you can apply to, based on your qualifications.

This can also help you figure out what further education or training you might need, and if you can keep up with the job’s conditions.

4. Narrow down the list

The next step is to cut out any job that has any tasks or obligations you don’t agree with or that don’t align with your goals and ambitions.

These cuts should be based on the information you gathered about each career choice, and they should be done without any bias.

You may like a career, but one part of it can be a deal-breaker that you can’t accept in the long run. Sometimes, the job may require you to have 2 or 3 extra years of education or an extra degree that you don’t have. You may also lack the required experience to apply for the job.

Some jobs sound great on the surface but have really poor advancement opportunities or remuneration, and that is enough to cut it out of your long list.

Your goal here is to create a shortlist with at most 5 jobs on there that you will enjoy, are qualified for, and you can reasonably pursue. Make sure these jobs are as few as possible, to make your choice an easier one.

5. Get more information

At this point, you must have whittled down your list to a few options that you can realistically pursue. The next thing to do is to get more detailed information about those jobs on your shortlist.

You may think that you already have enough information by now, but there is a limit to things you can find online. This information you need is only accessible by people on the inside.

This stage calls for something called an informational interview.

An informational interview is when a job seeker inquires about in-depth information on a job or company, like the corporate environment, job description, job outlook, and even other possible opportunities related to the company.

You don’t have to be unemployed to schedule informational interviews. As long as you’re researching a job, you can reach out to people who work in that field.

Don’t hold back when doing this research because it is an essential step in choosing a career. Use all the resources and connections at your disposal. LinkedIn can help you find the employees and professionals you need, and you can also approach your friends and network for help.

6. Make a choice

After all the information you must have gathered, you should be in the right position to pick a career. Based on all your research, you should pick the career that most aligns with your goals, vision, and values.

You also need to keep the company structure and salary in mind when making this choice, although they shouldn’t be the primary driving forces behind your choice.

If, at any point in this step, you feel like you made a mistake, don’t hesitate to make a change. It is quite reasonable and a lot of people make several career changes during their lifetime.

So, don’t put yourself under undue pressure. Instead, make a choice backed by facts and figures and not emotions. Your career should give you satisfaction.

7. Determine your goals and set off to accomplish them

Now that you have made the big decision, you need to set the ball rolling on the journey you will take towards your chosen career. You don’t think that merely choosing the career will land you a nice job in the field, do you?

Absolutely not.

This is the time to set several personal goals that will launch you into your chosen career, and see you through it.

Personal goals can be long or short-term, but they are equally important. Short-term goals usually take about 6 months to a few years to come to fruition, but long-term goals take more time than that; at least 3 to 5 years. They both serve different functions, but you need them both if you want to succeed.

You set your short-term goals to cover any extra preparations and training you need to do before applying for a job in your chosen career.

They can include taking online courses, volunteering to gain experience, or even getting some extra certification to qualify for the position. The information you gathered previously on the career will help you figure out what you need to do.

Long-term goals are more time-consuming, and they can include getting a degree in a related field or getting a higher degree to qualify for a higher position.

The strength and effectiveness of these goals will determine how successful you are in your search.

8. Make a career action plan

A career action plan contains all your plans to get your preferred job or career advancement. It is a personalized plan for any individual, and it typically contains your personal goals, how you plan on achieving them, and how long each one will take to accomplish.

You may think you don’t need a career action plan, but having one makes you more organized and makes your goals a lot easier to achieve.

To make a practical career action plan, you need to write out your goals in the order that you plan to achieve them, and when.

Then, identify when you expect to have accomplished each goal, along with a detailed description of how exactly you intend on accomplishing each one of them. You don’t have to put in everything at once; you can add new goals as you go.

Some people prefer to write out the plan from the beginning, while others start from the end and work their way up to the beginning. Either way is fine, as long as the goals are written out clearly, with their proposed end date.

This plan of yours should be adaptable enough to include any unexpected changes or situations that might come up.

HOW TO MAKE BETTER CAREER CHOICES-200

Choosing a career is one of the hardest choices to make, and even with each step laid out, it doesn’t mean that you will make the right career choice.

You have to be careful while making this choice because it can save you a lot of grief in the future. Here are some ways you can make better choices.

Think long-term: The best way to make a decision that will be beneficial to you, in the long run, is to consider your long-term plans and make a decision that will fit into your plans.

Don’t make your decisions only based on your present life; instead, consider your future plans and the career’s job outlook and growth opportunities.

Prioritize facts over feelings: Sometimes, to avoid the pressures of making such a big decision, you may be tempted to just pick any option because of one thing you like. Instead of doing that and risk making a bad choice, consider all the facts at your disposal and use them as the basis of your decision.

Weigh all your opportunities: When looking for a career, the best thing to do is to consider every option available to you before making a final choice. Look into every available career available and weigh all the factors, including salary, location, and job outlook.

Don’t rush into anything: Most times, big decisions can be so overwhelming, and that can push you into making decisions without really thinking about it. You have to take your time and mull over everything before you put anything to paper.

Talk to someone: If the weight of your decision is heavy on your shoulders, talking to an experienced person or a mentor who has experience in that field.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG CAREER

Making the wrong career choice is not the end of the road. In fact, this happens a lot more often than you’d expect. Several people go through different career paths in their lives, and they end up in their perfect jobs eventually. So, if you think you’re in the wrong career, don’t panic. Here are some things you can do to help you re-discover your purpose:

Self-examination

The first thing you should do is search yourself and discover if the problem is your job or an unsatisfactory workplace environment.

A lot of times, the career path you picked was perfect, but the job that you’re in isn’t the best. In those cases, the best thing you could do is to find a different opportunity in the same community.

While in other cases, you may find that you’re in the wrong career as a whole. In this situation, you can completely change your career path.

How to know if you’ve chosen the wrong career

  • You find the work draining and unsatisfactory no matter the kind of results you get. If your job gives you negative thoughts consistently, it may be time to reconsider your career path.
  • You put in so much time and energy into your career, and you never get good enough results. This could be a sign that you aren’t a good fit for the job you’re doing. You should look inside yourself and find a career that fits your personality while also providing you with job satisfaction.
  • If you always think about quitting your job or consider it seriously, then you may be in the wrong career.
  • You don’t agree with the job or industry’s beliefs or morals. Maybe you like the location or the salary, but if you find yourself disagreeing with a lot of the morals and beliefs that the job stands for, then you may need a new job/career
  • If your strengths and skills don’t come out in your career, you may be in the wrong career. You need a place that showcases your strengths and not hides them.

Find people who enjoy their jobs

When you find yourself getting less happy and fulfilled by your job, meeting people who enjoy their jobs might be the best option for you.

This way, you can see what they have that you lack, so it can help you know what it is you need in a career.

Also, you might fall in love with a new career just by seeing someone else talk about it with satisfaction.

Get information

If you feel your career is not the best fit for you, then it is time to go on more informational interviews. You can repeat the steps in finding a new career, or if you have one in mind, talk to people in that field.

Ask relevant questions, and see if it is a good idea to switch.

Figure out how you can transfer your skills to another job

Switching careers is not a hard as it seems, especially when you consider that many careers require the same or similar skill sets.

You can look around for any jobs that need the skills you already possess and adapt those skills to fit the job. Searching for job opportunities and descriptions can help get you on track.

CONCLUSION

Career opportunities are plentiful and varied, so there are just too many options to choose from. But, this is not an impossible feat.

With the right approach and outlook, you are bound to find the perfect fit for your personality and skillset.

And if you make a mistake, it is never too late to switch careers and find something more fulfilling. Your perfect career awaits you!

How to Make a Career Choice When You Are Undecided: 8 Steps to Choosing a Career

Factors to consider when choosing a career

What factors should you consider when planning your career? Well, there are SO MANY factors to consider when choosing a career. And when you’re young, it’s a decision that weighs heavy on you. What if you make the wrong choice? What if you end up hating a job you really thought you’d love?

To help calm your nerves and give clarity, we created this guide on seven factors to consider when choosing a career. Let’s get started!

Throughout our lives, we are constantly faced with choices. Some of these choices are small and inconsequential, while others have the potential to shape our lives in profound ways. One of the most important choices we will ever make is choosing a career path.

With that in mind, you may be wondering: What are the factors to consider when choosing a career? Here are seven big ones:

1. Your passions and interests

The first factor to consider when planning a career is to think about your passions and interests. Ultimately, what makes you happy?

For example, if you’re passionate about building others up, you might want to consider a career in social work or teaching. If you’re excited by the prospect of travel and adventure, you might look into careers in the travel industry or the military.

And if you’re motivated by the challenge of problem-solving, you might want to consider engineering or another STEM field.

No matter what your goals are, there’s a career out there that’s perfect for you. By taking the time to think through what you want from life, you can find the path that leads to the happiness and success you’re looking for.

2. Your desired salary

What are the factors to consider when choosing a career when it comes to your salary? While it’s important to choose a career that you enjoy, you also want to make sure you’ll be able to support yourself financially.

That said, there are a number of resources you can use to evaluate salaries for different careers.

Two great places to start are Glassdoor and PayScale. These sites also have online salary calculators to help you get an idea of how much you can expect to earn based on your education, location, and experience level.

For example, if you’re interested in teaching, you may want to compare the average salaries of teachers in different states. You may also want to research the salaries of teachers at different levels (elementary, middle, and high school) and with different amounts of experience.

All of these factors will make sure you choose a career that meets your financial needs as well as your personal interests.

3. Education requirements

What are the factors to consider when choosing a career when it comes to education requirements? While some careers only require on-the-job training, others may require you to invest years (and tens of thousands of dollars) into your education.

And with the average student loan debt being around $40,000, it’s crucial to make sure the salary you can expect to earn is worth the potential debt you may have to take on.

For example, the average law student graduates with $160,000 in student loan debt. By contrast, they can expect to earn around $127,990 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Meanwhile, many real estate agents only need to pass a real estate exam to get started and can make $60,000 a year or more depending on their location.

Long story short, make sure you’re aware of the upfront cost you may have to put into pursuing a particular career.

4. Work/life balance

So what are some other factors to consider when choosing a career? One you may not have thought about is work/life balance.

In today’s world, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the rat race and sacrifice your personal life in the name of career success. However, this can lead to burnout, health problems, and unhappiness.

Some careers are notorious for having almost no work/life balance. For instance, construction managers, lawyers, financial analysts, and doctors all usually work more than 40 hours a week.

If these hours work for you, that’s great. But if you want a job that gives you a life outside of work, you may want to consider a career with flexible hours, the option to work remotely, or ample time off. And if you have kids, there are even great jobs for stay-at-home moms.

Remember, your career should enhance your life, not consume it. By finding a good work/life balance that works for you, you can have a successful career and a rich personal life.

5. Travel requirements

Travel requirements are among the top factors you should consider when planning a career. Some jobs come with lots of travel opportunities, while others have little to no travel. Consider which type of career would match your personal lifestyle goals and preferences.

If you want to see the world, a career that involves frequent travel may be a good fit for you. This could include working in fashion, sales, event planning, or even the air travel industries.

However, if you prefer to stay closer to home, a stationary career in a field like accounting, engineering, and education (among countless others) may be a better choice.

6. Opportunities for growth and development

Another major factor you should consider when planning a career is the opportunity for growth and development. Will you be able to advance in a particular career over time, or are you likely to reach a dead end after a few years?

Some careers have very limited upward mobility, while others provide multiple opportunities for advancement.

For example, entry-level positions in many corporate environments offer the potential to move up the ladder into management roles. In contrast, jobs that are based on hourly wages often have little room for advancement. Other careers, such as entrepreneurship, offer unlimited potential for growth.

As you weigh your options, research how much room for growth and development a prospective career path has. That way you know what to expect five, ten, or fifteen years from now.

7. Job market outlook

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a career is the job market outlook. The last thing you want to do is invest your time, money, and energy into a career that isn’t going to be in demand. So, for this next tip, research the job market in your chosen career field.

Luckily, there are a number of websites to help you do this:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is a great place to start. It provides detailed information on employment trends and projections. Simply enter your desired job title into the search engine, and you’ll be able to see how the job market is expected to change in the coming years.

Glassdoor and CareerBuilder

Glassdoor and CareerBuilder are other great resources for researching job market outlooks. In addition to providing insights from current and former employees, they offer data on things like average salary and benefits.

Combined, this information can be invaluable in helping you choose a career path that’s not only personally satisfying but also has good long-term prospects.

Words of wisdom: What factors should you consider when planning a career?

So what factors should you consider when planning a career? Beyond these seven factors, I have some great advice for any young woman who feels overwhelmed trying to figure it all out:

Do what makes you happy

First and foremost, follow your heart and do what makes you happy. Far too often, people choose a career based on external factors such as money or prestige.

While these factors to consider when choosing a career may provide some level of satisfaction in the beginning, they aren’t likely to lead to lasting happiness. Instead, focus on what truly brings you joy when choosing a career. It’s what will matter most in the end.

Be open to trying new things

Trying new things is also an important part of finding a job you love. It’s okay to pivot a few times before landing on your perfect match.

For example, I started my career as an academic advisor at a university. I loved helping students plan out their class schedules and stay on track for graduation. But after two years, I realized I would never make the amount of money I needed to feel financially secure.

So, I decided to try something new. I broke into freelance copywriting and have since spent years building up my career. Now, I absolutely love what I do and make more money than I could have ever earned as an academic advisor.

And who knows, maybe one day I’ll try something new again. The important thing is to be open to new experiences and to never stop learning.

Know that it’s okay if you don’t do what you went to college for

Lastly, know that it’s okay if you end up doing something totally different than what you went to college for. It’s okay if you never have the “perfect” career in mind. Very few people stay in their first-choice career forever.

Over time, you get a better sense of what you like and dislike. And as that happens, it’s okay to adjust course if you find out a particular career isn’t for you.

Choosing a career is easy when you’re five or even 14 years old, because you still have enough time to think it over and change your mind. But when it comes time to choose a college, then you have to really make the choice that you may have to stick with for the rest of your life. That’s because, especially in India, you can’t even take classes outside your major. Whatever major you choose in college goes on your resume, makes up your skill sets and there’s not much you can do to change it.

So how should one go about choosing the right career? It can be intimidating to learn about all the career options and know our strengths and be realistic about it all. However, you don’t have to worry. Selecting a career is something we all do, it’s a dilemma we all face at some point in your life. If you’re lucky, you’ll face it only once in your life!

After all I have some experience in this area! I selected my career path at the age of 13, and then changed it afterwards at the age of 30! That’s because what I selected as a child definitely didn’t take in all of the important factors to consider when choosing a career. So I have some practical advice for you.

Whether you’re a high school student, or looking to change your career after 30, here are 7 really significant points for anyone who’s trying to select the right career.

1. Choose a subject that’s interesting enough for you to work on.

Regardless of what movies and magazines say, your career does not always have to be something that you’re absolutely passionate about. However, it definitely has to be interesting enough for you.

At work we spend at least eight hours a day. These working hours often extend to our personal lives, especially with work meetings, over-time and business travel. So ask yourself before you make the choice: is the subject interesting enough to work on until you retire? If you’re not really interested in what you’re working on, life can become somewhat of a living hell.

That’s why this is the most important thing you should consider when choosing a career.

2. You don’t have to be too passionate about it.

Now this one is contrary to all popular beliefs. If you ask most people how to choose a career, they’ll say choose your passion! As a youngster, you’re often made to believe that what we choose as your career should be something we are thoroughly passionate about. That you should turn your hobby into your career. But not everybody agrees.

Some people believe that your hobbies and your career should be kept separate, so that you can pursue your hobby in your free time. You don’t have to make money out of it. That is especially true if you’re passionate about something which may not earn enough to make a living. What you choose as a career also needs to have enough demand in the market.

Additionally, your career path should leave you with some separate hobbies that you can turn to, on a stressful day or when you’re just looking for a change of pace. So if you choose something that you are extremely passionate about, in the early years of your career when you’re still hustling, it may feel like you have no passion left for it anymore. It’s called burnout, which can bring mental stress.

Andre Agassi has been a world No. 1 tennis player. But in his autobiography he admitted, “I play tennis for a living even though I hate tennis, hate it with a dark and secret passion and always have… It becomes more than a job, it takes over your life.”

While you don’t have to turn every hobby into a career, your job should still be something that you like doing.

3. Your career should give you something to work on until retirement age.

In some careers, the retirement age is extremely early. For example, in modelling, acting, especially for females, or sports, a lot of people retire before they’re 40. So keep those things in mind before you choose your career.

Ideally, your career should be feasible to sustain until retirement age, since we all need something to do. We work not just to make money, but also to fill our time. Work gives us a sense of fulfillment and self-respect. Without any work to do, we all can feel lost, useless or sad. So make sure you know what you’re getting into. This is one of the biggest considerations in choosing a career that people often forget.

If your career of choice has an early retirement age, plan what you’ll work on after that, too. Similarly, if you’re choosing something that may give you too much free time, such as freelance acting or performance arts, be mentally prepared for those recurring periods of time when you may be out of work.

4. Your career should be practical for your lifestyle.

As we grow older, our likes and dislikes change, but we rarely completely change our lifestyle choices. If you don’t like working out now, a career that requires you to be extremely fit may not be the perfect one for you. Similarly, if you’re allergic to certain foods or environments, the career that makes you travel a lot is probably a bad idea. If you don’t like to live frugally, or work day and night without any expectation, being an entrepreneur would be a terrible choice.

So try to envision yourself as an adult, in your daily life as a professional, and see if you can envision yourself living like that. Here are two questions to consider when choosing a career: does your preferred career path sound practical for you? If you’re not willing to move out of your city, will you find enough jobs in your area?

5. Your career should be compatible with your personality and your strengths.

Knowing what your strengths are is the first step of choosing your career. Ideally, it should make the best use of your skills and personality traits. For example, if you are a creative person, it’s a great idea to choose something that gives you a creative outlet.

If you choose something that doesn’t match your personality, it may be extremely hard for you to cope up in the future. For example if you’re an introvert, a career in politics is probably not a great idea, or if you get stage fear, performing arts may not be for you.

Every career requires you to step out of your comfort zone in some way or the other, but it should not be so drastic that you’re unable to cope. Also understand what skill sets your career will use. Ideally, it should use nearly all your skills, so that you feel you’re able to give it your best. This brings fulfillment.

For example, being a model or beauty blogger makes you famous only for your face, so it can be frustrating for someone with an intellectual side.

To choose what is best for you, you also have to choose something that you are the best for.

6. You should be able to earn enough to make a living.

The hard truth comes at last. This is an advice on choosing a career path we hear from our parents all the time, but it’s the truth of life. Your job needs to be in something that earns enough for you to be able to pay rent, sustain your family and save up for retirement. Money is one of the crucial factors to be considered in career planning.

So for example, if you want to become an entrepreneur, but have little to no savings, it’s best to wait for a few years until you save up enough to quit your day job. Being practical is the best idea when choosing your career, as its one of the most important decisions you make.

7. Your career should be able to help you achieve your long-term goal.

We all have a dream. Be honest with yourself, what’s your dream? You have to choose what your expectations from your career are early on. What’s most important for you: money, job satisfaction or work-life balance? Are you looking for a simple, carefree life, or do you want money and/or fame? We don’t achieve all our dreams, but it’s important to have them, so you know where you’re going in life.

What do you think success is? It’s different for everyone. And everyone’s definition even changes over time. Most mid-career changes happen because people realize their job isn’t taking them where they want to be. This is one of the most crucial factors to consider when choosing a job.

Ideally, your career should bring you not only money, but also happiness. In the real world, no one is happy all day, every day. But if you choose a good career path, you will at least be happy once every day.

So it’s a good idea to know what your real ambition is, and then your career choice will become easier. You just have to consider options that you think will help you fulfill your long-term goals. And it’s okay to keep questioning it even after you have a job.
