1. Before such tours you should learn how to move and breathe in rapid water.
2. This company ignores tourists’ safety.
3. Rafting can be life-threatening.
4. This kind of tour is for strong and fit people.
5. Professional staff make these difficult tours fun.
6. If you secure your life jacket properly, you’ll come home safely.
7. Team spirit and optimism are important in such tours.

Speaker A: Our trip with this company started with manually dragging our boats round the first Beginner’s Luck rapids. Well, I fell on the rocks while doing this and injured my elbow. This company has a strange view on safety! Our guide, with 9 years of experience, did nothing to prevent our boat from being turned upside down, throwing all three of us into the water. So I am begging you: do yourself a favor – please use another boating company!

Speaker B: This trip isn’t about being rowed down a river. You will paddle, feel pain and get bruises. You wear a helmet and life jacket for a reason. You need to be at a basic level of physical fitness; there is some climbing up and down rocks and on uneven ground, and it’s slippery. You need to paddle sitting in an awkward position. You have to be able to get up and down quickly. You have to listen and respond to directions. If you really can do that, sign up!

Speaker C: At the end of the day, don’t be lazy. We’re all tired; we’re all sore and bruised, so what? Help take your boat up. Not doing that is considered rude. And please don’t be pessimistic, gloomy or unpleasant because it may annoy the people around you who are trying to hear the guides and have a fun day with family and friends. Kids can go too, but they need to be at least 90 pounds, or at least twelve years old, and they need to be good swimmers and listeners.

Speaker D: I’ve gone with this company twice now and I enjoyed it both times. There are several rafting companies out there but you won’t meet personnel as qualified as you meet here. These people are doing what they love. I would not take these trips without a guide as I’d kill myself. They get you down safely and allow you to have fun between the rapids! Food was good and every time we passed another outfitter, it became evident we chose the best one!

Speaker E: There is a common assumption that life jackets keep your head above water at all times. WRONG – they are constructed to be able to float in water, so in any case you will pop to the surface. But waves and river currents are strong enough to take you under water for brief periods. A good rafting company typically provides a course on how to breathe strategically in rapids, but most beginners usually forget all that in the panic of being in the water.

Speaker F: I almost got killed in a white water rafting trip. This is how it happened. I rafted a very fast river. The guy in front of me lost his footing, banged into me and we both fell in. Our boat panicked, so we were rescued by another one 10 minutes later. We were heavily injured and I was barely conscious. My life jacket did NOT protect me from going under the crashing pull of white water. Don’t listen to those who say that rafting is safe, it is dangerous!

A: Lucy wasn’t at school for several days.
B: Lucy felt bad because of overeating.
C: Lucy’s mother is a doctor.
D: Peter did exercises with the map of the UK.
E: Peter is not afraid of the test.
F: Peter offers his notes to Lucy.
G: Lucy and Peter are going to review for the test later.

Peter: Hi, Lucy! You weren’t at school today. What is the matter? I was worried about you.

Lucy: Hi, Peter. It’s nothing serious, actually. I just felt a bit sick in the morning, so my mom let me stay at home.

Peter: You poor thing! And are you feeling better now?

Lucy: Yeah, much better, thank you. I guess it must have been the pizza that I ate yesterday. That was the reason for my bad stomachache. I had too much. But now, yeah, I feel all right. I think I won’t have to miss any more lessons this week.

Peter: But you haven’t been to the doctor’s office, have you? Won’t you have problems at school because you missed classes? When I was ill last month, I brought a medical certificate to school.

Lucy: Well, my mom called our class teacher, so I don’t think there will be any problems. Besides we don’t have many lessons on Wednesdays. How was Geography, by the way? Did you take a test?

Peter: Oh, no, we didn’t, but we revised the material for the test. The teacher asked several people to do exercises with the map of the UK at the blackboard, and then we had a sort of contest in groups where we had to find different mountains, rivers and lakes – the quicker the better, that was fun! And we also checked our homework and asked the teacher questions if we were not sure about the answers. You know, I feel well-prepared for tomorrow’s test now.

Lucy: Wait a second! Are we going to take the test tomorrow? I can’t believe it!

Peter: Yes, our teacher said that we are starting a new topic next week, so we have to finish this one tomorrow. Do you need any help with geography?

Lucy: Uh, if you can lend me your exercise-book with notes and checked homework, that would save me hours.

Peter: I am afraid I can’t give you my exercise-book right now because I have to revise the material for the test myself. But if you call me in two hours, we could probably study for the test together.

Lucy: Sounds like a great idea. And thanks so much for offering to help. It’s so nice to have a friend like you.

Peter: No problem. See you later then. Bye for now.

Lucy: Bye, Peter.

Presenter: Hello everybody and welcome to our program “5 minutes with a star”! Today we have a well-known actor Greg Jones. Hello, Greg, so nice to see you today, thanks for coming.

Speaker: Hi, everybody! It’s my pleasure being here with all of you today.

Presenter: So, your acting career is on another high at the moment – to what do you attribute this?

Speaker: I think having a happy home really helps. It took me a long time to achieve that. I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to accomplish things… make money, gain experience… And I wasn’t a proper father and husband when I was younger. I learnt a lot from my failures in the past. Now, with my wife Dina, I’ve been able to realize what really matters and devote myself to her and to raising our daughter Marylen.

Presenter: I see. And do you keep in close touch with your older children?

Speaker: Yes. Actually, Dina is the person who brings everyone together. She doesn’t have any resentment about my previous marriage. She got acquainted with my first wife and it’s been really wonderful for me to see her be very open and want everyone to feel appreciated.

Presenter: Is it tough to raise a young daughter in your sixties?

Speaker: Absolutely not! I have more time, I understand more about being a father, and watching her grow up has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life. She’s an amazing girl – very bright, very spirited. It’s the first time that I’ve really been able to be the kind of father that I wanted to be, but because of my career ambitions, I never allowed myself the chance to spend that kind of time with my older children.

Presenter: Speaking about your career, what was your first big ambition?

Speaker: Well, when I was younger I wanted to become a jazz musician, which got somehow sidetracked when I was drafted into the army. After that it took a long time for me to get any good acting roles until I started doing Westerns. It took many years, even after I became quite famous, for me to understand what I really wanted to do.
Presenter: That’s interesting. And do you have any thoughts of retiring?

Speaker: Age is just a state of mind and I’m lucky as retirement isn’t enforced on actors and directors. I’d planned on not working after I was 39! But here I am at 69 and enjoying working more today than I have ever done. I think I shall go on while I have all that strength and energy.

Presenter: Do you feel you’ve learnt any lessons about life that you’d like to share with us?

Speaker: Life rarely goes the way you plan it. There are good things and bad things that happen to you all the time and you have to be able to admit that, deal with it and move on. When I was younger I was angry at the world, always full of ambitions, but now finally I’ve been able to relax.

Presenter: Okay. And my final question. What do you see as your biggest accomplishment?

Speaker: Well … My life now is exactly how I hoped it could be 20 years ago. Lots of things are important – my four children, professional success … But, I’d say, finding a good partner in life is true happiness for me.

4. Keeping viewers glued to a TV set

6 . Time is money

7 . Fairer chances for business

8. The appearance of TV advertising

A.
For about seventy years TV  has been used as a vehicle for
advertising in some countries . Since  the late 1940s, television commercials
have become far and away the most effective  and most popular method of selling
products of all sorts. The radio advertising industry was well-established when
television made its debut in the 1940s, and  television was  developed as a
commercial medium, based upon the successful format of the radio.

B.
In the earliest days of television, it was often difficult to
understand whether you watch  actual television programmes or commercials. Many
of the earliest television shows were sponsored by single companies, who
inserted their names and products into the shows as much as possible. For
example, Texaco employees  appeared during the show to perform  while the
Texaco musical logo would play in the background.

C.
Another important milestone came in the 1960s with the
introduction of very short commercial breaks during a TV show. Now it was
possible for several companies to use a popular programme as an advertising
platform together. It was one of the most efficient ways of marketing, and
companies like Tide and Crest took it as an opportunity to expand their ad
campaigns.

D.
In the 1970s, the broadcast of television advertisements
which promoted cigarettes was banned by the administration. This resulted in a
conflict between the government and television networks,  as for  them these
ads constituted a significant portion of the total  revenue. The period between
the 1970s and the 1990s was marked by  the increase of the time of commercial
breaks from 9 to 19 minutes or the debut  of celebrities advertising brand
products.

E.
Today the vast majority of television commercials consist of
brief advertising spots, ranging in length from a few seconds to several
minutes.  Commercials of this sort have been used to sell literally every
product imaginable over the years, from household products to goods and
services, to political campaigns. It is considered impossible for a politician
to wage a successful election campaign without airing a good television
commercial.

F.
The brief commercial «breaks» that interrupt shows
regularly are the primary reason for the existence of modern-day television
networks.  The programming  is intended to  capture the attention of the
audience so that they will not want to change the channel; instead, they will
(hopefully) watch the commercials while waiting for the next segment of the
show. Entire industries exist that focus solely on the task of keeping the
viewing audience interested enough to sit through commercials.

G.
The TV commercial is generally considered the most effective
mass-market advertising format, and this is reflected by the high prices TV
networks charge for commercial aim during popular TV events. The  ratings
systems determine how successful  television shows are, so that they can decide
what rates to charge advertisers for their commercial airtime.  For example, a
single thirty-second TV spot in prime time may cost up to $2 million.

People have always looked for adventure. Now,
however, a new extreme sport seems to appear every week. What are the latest
ways people have found to give themselves the ultimate thrill?

One way is horse boarding. All you need is a
skateboard, a horse and two people. The rider of the horse makes the horse run
and the person on the skateboard is pulled along. A ________ Well,
it isn’t. First of all, a horse can go from standing still to fifty kilometres
an hour very quickly, so the increase in speed in very sudden. Secondly, horses
are animals. Boats, motorbikes and other machines can be controlled, but horses
are much more difficult. B
 ________ They may
stop suddenly, change direction or even decide to jump over something.

If you’re not keen on working with animals, there
are other new ideas. How about zorbing? C ________ The sport began
back in 2000, but it has recently become more popular. A zorb is a giant
plastic ball. You get in and roll down a hill. Zorbing was invented in New
Zealand. D ________ Life must be dull in that country to make
people come up with all these strange ways of getting excitement in their
lives. If zorbing sounds too safe, here’s another idea. Volcano boarding. All
you need is a specially made board and protective clothes.  ________
That’s where you can find the Cerro Negro mountain, a live volcano which is
perfect for this sport. It’s only 700 metres high, but the surface is covered
in loose pieces of lava and rock. This is perfect for reaching speeds of up to
eighty kilometres an hour.F
 ________ That’s
why you should make sure you’re wearing a helmet and thick clothes

3.       That’s

The
Introduction to a New Biography of Gannibal by the Author

Alexander Pushkin
was not only Russia’s greatest poet, but he was also the great-grandson of an
African slave. The slave, whose godfather was Peter the Great, claimed to have
royal blood of his own. Certainly his Russian descendants believed that he was
an African prince. His descendants have included members as well as close
friends of the English royal family. So the legend goes on.
Pushkin told the story of his black ancestor in «The Negro of Peter the
Great», but this biography tells a different version. The main difference
is between fact and fiction. The Russian poet hoped to discover a biographical
truth by sticking to the facts, only to discover that facts are slippery and
not always true. His biography turned into a novel. Even then, it was left
unfinished after six and a half chapters. The scrawled manuscript comes to an
end with a line of dialogue — «Sit down, you scoundrel, let’s talk!»
— and a line of dots. Pushkin could be speaking to himself. In any case, it’s
now time to stand up and carry on with the story. I have tried to join up the
dots.
This is a book, then, about a missing link between the storyteller and his
subject, an African prince, between the various branches of a family and its
roots, between Pushkin and Africa, Africa and Europe, Europe and Russia, black
and white. It is the story of a remarkable life and it poses the question: how
is such a life to be explained?
My own explanation began in 2001, while I was living in Russia and working
there as a journalist. The first draft was written during the war in
Afghanistan, on the road to Kabul, but it describes my journey to the frontline
of a different war in Africa between the armies of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
According to legend, Pushkin’s ancestor was born there, on the northern bank of
the River Mareb, where I was arrested for taking photographs and compass
readings, on suspicion of being a spy. Understandably my captors didn’t believe
that I was only a journalist researching the life of Russia’s greatest writer.
At the military camp, where I was held for a number of hours, the commandant
looked me up and down when I asked, in my best posh English accent, «I
say, my good man, can you tell me, basically, what is going on here?»
«Basically,» he replied, with distaste, «you are in
prison!» The incident taught me something. Journalists, like biographers,
are meant to respect facts, and by retracing Gannibal’s footsteps, I hoped to
find a true story.
Some of those journeys lie behind the book, and are used whenever it is helpful
to show that the past often retains a physical presence for the biographer — in
landscapes, buildings, portraits, and above all in the trace of handwriting on
original letters or journals. But my own journeys are not the point of the
book. It is Gannibal’s story. I am only following him.
Descriptions of Africa and the slave trade result from my journeys, but this is
not a book about a «stolen legacy», nor certainly about the
intellectual wars that have been part of black history in recent years.
Biographers, like novelists, should tell stories. I have tried to do this. I
should, however, point out from the outset that Gannibal was not the only black
face to be seen in the center of fashionable St Petersburg at that time. Negro
slaves were a common sight in the grand salons of Millionaires’ Street and they
appeared in a variety of roles, such as pets, pages, footmen, mascots,
mistresses, favourites and adopted children. At the Winter Palace, so-called
court Arabs, usually Ethiopians dressed in turbans and baggy trousers stood
guard like stage extras in the marble wings.
A12. The slave’s Russian descendants believe that the slave
1) had Russian royal blood in him.
2) was Peter the Great’s godfather.
3) belonged to the royal family in
his native land.
4) was a close friend of the
English royal family.

A13. According to the narrator, the biography of Pushkin’s ancestor
turned into a novel because Pushkin

1) didn’t like the true
biographical facts he had discovered.
2) found it impossible to stick to
the facts that were doubtful.
3) could not do without describing
fictional events.
4) found the true facts of the
slave’s biography uninspiring.

A14. The narrator’s objective in writing the book was to

1) write a new version of the novel
«The Negro of Peter the Great».
2) continue the story from where it
was left unfinished.
3) interpret the storyteller’s
attitude to his ancestor.
4) prove that Pushkin’s ancestor
was an African prince.

A15. The narrator says that his research for the book

1) brought him to Russia to work as
a journalist.
2) made him go to the war in
Afghanistan.
3) led him to take part in the war
in Africa.
4) brought him to a river bank in
Africa.

A16. The lesson that the narrator learnt from his arrest was

1) not to use a camera and compass
at the frontline.
2) to avoid speaking to people in
his best posh English accent.
3) not to distort information about
real events.
4) never to tell people about his
research.

A17. The narrator says that his journeys

1) helped him find some traces of
the past.
2) extended his sympathy to a
«stolen legacy».
3) deepened his understanding of
the concept of intellectual wars.
4) turned out to be the main
contents of his book.

A18. The narrator points out that at the time of Gannibal

1) negro slaves played a variety of
roles in the theatre.
2) black slaves were like stage
extras in royal processions.
3) many Africans made a brilliant
career at the court.
4) Africans were not a novelty in
the capital of Russia.

1. A step to a wider variety    5. Origin of theatre

2. Varieties of theatre             6. Ladies enter

3. Modern problems               7. Not the least important

4. Theatre and politics           8. Stars for a repertoire

A.Modern Western theatre comes in large measure from ancient Greek drama,
from which it takes technical terminology, classification into genres, and many
of its themes, stock characters, and plot elements. The Greeks also developed
the concepts of dramatic criticism, acting as a career, and theatre architecture.
The theatre of ancient Greece consisted of three types of drama: tragedy,
comedy, and the satyr play.

B.Western theatre developed and expanded considerably under the Romans. The
Roman historian Livy wrote that the Romans first experienced theatre in the
4th century BC. The theatre of ancient Rome was a thriving and diverse art
form, ranging from festival performances of street theatre, nude dancing, and
acrobatics, to the staging of broadly appealing situation comedies, to the
highstyle, verbally elaborate tragedies.

C.Theatre took on many different forms in the West between the 15th and 19th
centuries, including commedia dell’arte and melodrama. The general trend was
away from the poetic drama of the Greeks and the Renaissance and toward a
more naturalistic prose style of dialogue, especially following the Industrial
Revolution. Theatre today, broadly defined, includes performances of plays
and musicals, ballets, operas and various other forms.

D.The eighteenth century in Britain introduced women to the stage, which would
have been extremely inappropriate before. These women were looked at as
celebrities but on the other hand, it was still very new and revolutionary that
they were on the stage and some said they were unladylike and looked down
on. Charles II did not like young men playing the parts of young women, so he
asked that women play their own parts.

E.Theatre took a big pause during 1642 and 1660 in England because of
Cromwell’s Interregnum. Theatre was seen as something sinful and the
Puritans tried very hard to drive it out of their society. Because of this stagnant
period, once Charles II came back to the throne in 1660, theatre (among other
arts) exploded because of a lot of influence from France, where Charles was in
exile the years previous to his reign.

F.Stagecraft is a term referring to the technical aspects of theatrical, film, and
video production. It includes constructing scenery, hanging and focusing of
lighting, design and procurement of costumes, makeup, props, stage
management, and recording and mixing of sound. Considered a technical rather
than an artistic field, it is equally crucial for the practical implementation of a
designer’s artistic idea.

G.While most modern theatre companies rehearse one piece of theatre at a time,
perform that piece for a set “run”, retire the piece, and begin rehearsing a new
show, repertory companies rehearse multiple shows at one time. Repertory
theatre generally involves a group of similarly accomplished actors, and relies
more on the reputation of the group than on an individual star actor.

                                               Internet

Internet is one of the greatest tools we have today. Billions of bits of
information, unlimited ways to connect, games to play, videos to watch, things to
learn. There’s something for everyone. We Facebook, tumble, stumble, and tweet
more now than ever. Social media is connecting us in incredible ways. You can
create communities of like-minded people that would never meet before on the
Internet. But, due to this, we are spending copious amounts of time on the World
Wide Web, and it’s slowly changing who you are as a person.
I went for a long period of time where I didn’t read a book. I finally got
around to picking up a few new books and as soon as I started reading them, I
struggled. I couldn’t hold concentration like I used to. I would read a whole
paragraph with my mind elsewhere or had this constant anxious feeling to do
something else, even when there was absolutely nothing else to do. My mind
would jump from one thought to another and I barely could read a chapter in one
sitting. A talked to a few people about this, and I even looked to the trusty
Internet for my solution. I found that I’m not alone, many people report the
same type of concentration shift. The reason for this is the information overload
via Internet. We take in 34 gigabytes of information each day now. That is 5
times more than we did 20 years ago. There is so much going on in our minds
that we rarely spend any time on one particular bit of information because there
is always something new and more intriguing just around the corner. When we
land on a webpage, we spend the average of about 50 seconds, if that, and know
that there are at least 5 other links we can click on the page. We can still
concentrate, but our minds would much rather be focused on a series of things,
not one thought. Not only is it altering our concentration on reading long works,
but it’s changing “how” we read. We no longer read; we skim. This is our way of
adapting to this information overload. It would take too long to process all this
information and we don’t need everything. We sift through the information and
get to the main point or relevant material.
The way things are written online is changing for us as well. For anyone
who has written a blog post, it’s a much different style of writing compared to
novels and even newspaper articles. The things we read online are as clear and
concise as possible. Adjectives are a thing of the past. The information is usually
already condensed for you, and is separated into neat headlines that make it easy
to scan the page in a few seconds. We don’t focus on comprehension anymore,
we know what we’re looking for and we find it quickly.
The way we are reading things is just the start, the way we are thinking is
changing too. Before, we had calm linear thoughts, one thing led to another.
Now,our thoughts are jumping back and forth between so many things. We
have one thought, which leads to four or five other non-related thoughts, and
then some time later we return to the original thought. This is a direct result
of our attention being can take us somewhere new and start a new train of
thoughts. We’ve developed a much more fluid way of thinking. And it’s not a bad
thing. It’s making us more creative. You are much more efficient at combing and
filtering through ideas, which in essence is what inspiration is. Linear thought is
very organized and does not leave room for new ideas.
So, the Internet has become an essential part of our daily lives. But it’s also
important to disconnect for a while and to take care of your body and mind.
Create a balance of time online and in the real world, so you can reap the positive
cognitive abilities the Internet is giving you and avoid forming an unhealthy set of
habits that will cost you later in life.

A15 According to the author, Internet changes people because …
1)it adds lots of friends.
2)it helps to create new communities.
3)they spend too much time online.
4)of the amount of information it provides.

A16 Why does Internet, according to the author, influence reading concentration?
1)The information there changes too fast.
2)It leaves less time for reading.
3)The bits of information there are very short.
4)It provides excessive information.

A17 Which of the following is NOT a feature of an online text?
1)Clarity.
2)Reduced size.
3)Lots of descriptive words.
4)Informative headline.

A18 The way people read has changed because …
1)they don’t need all the information they read about.
2)they lost interest in serious literature.
3)they had to adjust to new conditions.
4)they had to read faster.

A19 According to the author the new way of thinking helps people …
1)browse the Internet effectively.
2)develop creativity.
3)filter useless information.
4)choose right things.

A20 The author calls for …
1)allowing more time for personal life.
2)giving equal attention to real world and Internet.
3)developing thinking abilities.
4)a healthy life style.

A21 It can be implied from the text that the author’s attitude towards Internet is
sooner …
1)positive.
2)skeptical.
3)negative.
4)neutral.
