Time to relax егэ

1. Time to Relax
2. Safety First
3. Exciting Prospect
4. Addictive Pastime
5. Positive Results
6. Rewarding Hobby
7. Discovering the World
8. Changing Influence

A. Boating can be a very relaxing pastime. It isn’t entirely limited to just cruising around. You can also set up water-skis and enjoy water-skiing. While boating is fun, however, it is also a hobby where you need to be very careful. Too many boaters die each year, mainly by falling overboard and drowning. It is important that you use common sense as well as always take lifejackets with you.

B. Painting is one of the most relaxing pastimes. Most people take up painting in oils or watercolours, others start with acrylics or pastels, but whatever your choice, it will be the beginning of a voyage of discovery. When you look at things that are familiar to you, you’ll see them in a different light. Learning something new almost every day will encourage you to keep going.

C. Fishing can be enjoyed at any age, individually or in groups, with little more investment than a cane pole and a few hooks. Within an hour from most homes, there is usually a place to fish. Perhaps the greatest appeal in fishing is the opportunity to get outdoors and have a rest. It’s an enjoyable pastime that can be used as a way to clear your head and forget about everyday problems.

D. For centuries gardening has been an extremely popular pastime across the British Isles and here you can find some of the most superb garden exhibits in the world. For countless people, gardening offers a peaceful and relaxing pastime that can create some very picturesque or beneficial results, depending on the kind of gardening taken up. Caring for your own garden will bring enjoyment and save you money at the grocery store.

E. Parents and teachers worry about games having negative effects on children and a great deal has been written about games leading to violent behaviour and addiction. However, not everything about gaming is negative. Games help children who are ill or have injuries. Absorption in a game distracts the mind from pain and discomfort. Many hospitals are encouraging children and others undergoing painful treatments to play games.

F. In these virtual worlds, you can choose an avatar or character that represents you. The latest games offer the ability to customize these characters in unlimited ways; you can change your character’s hairstyle, facial features, size, weight, and clothing. How about the ability to change your voice to match your online personality? That is currently not a standard feature in games but technology will provide a solution.

G. Gaming is enjoying a revolution. Not just in the fact that it is a growing business in itself, but also that it is rapidly becoming a leading means for communication and social interaction among people from all over the world. Young adults are at the forefront of the future for gaming and recent research shows that the role of gaming in young adults’ lives is evolving rapidly.

A. A unique food battle festival known as La Tomatina is celebrated in Spain every year on the last Wednesday of August. It involves thousands of people engaging in a brutal battle, throwing overripe tomatoes at each other. The festival spans more than a week and although there are many elements to the festival, such as parades, music, dancing and fireworks, they are all centered on the tomato fight.

B. Spanish cuisine is a heavenly mixture of chicken, mixed vegetables, fish and meats. Many of the most popular Spanish dishes are a type of Paella, which is a rice dish that features a variety of ingredients. Hot chocolate and churros are very popular desserts throughout the country. Spain is also famous for its aromatic wines and other alcoholic beverages like Sangria, Cava and authentic Spanish beer.

Time to relax

C. Spain is very rich with traditions, especially those associated with food. For breakfast, some families buy fresh churros, pair them with hot chocolate and enjoy a leisurely morning routine. Lunch is another important meal of the day, and it is usually heavier than breakfast. This is sometimes followed by a siesta, an afternoon nap to get through post-lunch drowsiness. During this time, shops close and then open again after two or three hours of rest.

D. Spain is an important resting spot for migratory birds, and a home for many animals. But, unfortunately, many species of wildlife face threats from habitat loss and pollution. Due to centuries of tree cutting, large forests are now found only in a few areas in the country. Spain has created many national parks and refuges, but they cover only about seven percent of the country.

E. Although there is a national parliament, Spain is one of the most decentralized democracies in Europe. Each of its 17 regions manages its own schools, hospitals, and other public services. The tourist services industry drives Spain’s economy,
but at the same time, since 1986, when Spain joined the European Community, it has worked to diversify its economy, by building important industries such as mining, shipbuilding, and textiles.

Spain as a state

F. Bullfighting is one of the most famous traditions in Spain. This risky sport evolved from the ancient Roman gladiator games, with human matadors opposing charging bulls. However, this tradition has lately become widely debated and younger
generations and animal-rights activists protest against bullfighting. Either way, it remains an iconic part of the country and bullfights take place in many Spanish towns and cities.

Entertainment with animals

G. La siesta is a well-known aspect of Spanish culture. Seeking to balance work with pleasure, Spaniards have long practiced this tradition, when students and professionals return to their homes around midday for a big lunch, followed by a few hours of rest and family time. Many businesses also shut down for a short break. However, 21st-century big cities move at a faster pace, and don’t take siestas, but many people in smaller towns and villages still take a siesta each day.

Now we are ready to start.

Presenter: Hello everybody and welcome to our program “Five minutes with the star”. Today we have a well-known actor Greg Jones. Hello, Greg! So nice to see you today. Thanks for coming.

Greg: Hi everybody! It’s mi pleasure to be here with all of you today.

Presenter: So, your acting career is on another height at the moment. To what do you attribute this?

Greg: I think having a happy home really helps. It took a long time for me to archive that. I used to put a lot of pressure on myself and accomplished things: make money, gain experience. And I wasn’t a proper father and husband when I was younger. I learned a lot from my fallers in the past. Now, with my wife Dina I’ve been able to realize what really matters and devote myself to her and to raising our daughter Merlin.

Presenter: I see. And you keep in close touch with your older children?

Greg: Yes. Actually, Dina is the person who gets everyone together. She doesn’t have any resent of my previous marriage. She got anointment with my first wife and it’s been really wonderful for me to see her be very open and want everybody to appreciate that.

Presenter: Is it tough to raise a young daughter in your 60s?

Greg: Absolutely not! I have more time, I understand more about being a father and watching her grow-up has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life. She is an amazing girl. Very bright, very spirited. It’s the first time when I’ve been really able to be a kind of father that I wanted to be, but because of my career ambitions I never allow myself a chance to spent that kind of time with my older children.

Presenter: Speaking about your career, what was your first big ambition?

Greg: Well, when I was younger, I wanted to become a jazz musician, which got somehow sided when I was dropped into the army. After that, it took a long time for me to get any good acting roles until I started to doing westerns. It took many years, even after I became quite famous, for me to understand what I really wanted to do.

Presenter: That’s interesting. And you have any thoughts of retiring?

Greg: Age is just a state of mind. And I’m lucky as retirement isn’t in force for actors and directors. I planed on not working after I was 39. But here I am at 69 and enjoy working on today and I’ve ever done. I think I shall go on while I have all these strength and energy.

Presenter: Do you feel you’ve learned any lessons about life that you would like to share with us?

Greg: Life really goes the way you plan it. There are good things and bad things that happen to you all the time. And you have to be able to admit that, deal with it and move on! When I was younger, I was angry at the world, always full of ambitions, but now, finally, I’ve been able to relax.

Presenter: Ok, and my final question: what do you see as your biggest accomplishment?

Greg: Well, my life now is exactly how I hoped it could be 20 years ago. Lots of things are important: my 4 children, professional success. But I’d say finding a good partner in life is true happiness for me.

1.  Musical performance

2.  Attractive landscape

3.  Perfect holidays

4.  Portrait of a girl

5.  Film for all ages

6.  Exciting hobby

7.  Colourful festival

8.  Interesting book

A. This is a full-length (ninety minutes) cartoon, which is entertaining for both adults and children over six. The animation and colour are of very high quality and the story has lots of fun and excitement. The plot is quick moving and full of surprises. There’s romance, action, comedy, music and lots of fantastic songs and dances.

B. This is a full-blooded magnificently written portrait of history’s most fascinating woman. Readers will lose themselves for hours in this richly entertaining novel full of dramatic twists and turns. From the spectacular era that bears her name comes the spellbinding story of Elizabeth I  — her tragic childhood, her confrontation with Mary, Queen of Scots and her brilliant reign.

C. The young woman is shown in a “shepherdess” hat and white dress, recalling a classical chiton. The background landscape, common in such paintings, seems to indicate the heroine’s closeness to nature, to the ordinary joys of life. The painter’s colour range  — at times as translucent as porcelain, at others muted like mother -of- pearl  — is based upon subtle plays of gray and green, light blue and pink.

D. In this picture one is struck by the artist’s absolute mastery in portraying natural details, whether the dry, sandy soil of the forest, the clear stream of water in the foreground, the yellow bark and fluffy needles of the pines, or the sense of a bright, clear, calm summer day. The artist managed to create an image familiar to anyone who has seen a Russian forest.

E. Have a good time on the most lively and exciting island in the Caribbean. Relax under a palm tree on the white sandy beaches. Swim in the clear, blue sea. Listen to the bands playing Calypso music. Or get really adventurous and go scuba diving for sunken treasure on the sea bed. Join in the many cultural celebrations we offer, for example the sugar harvest festival.

F. This event is considered the greatest attraction for visitors to the Isle of Man. No definite date can be given, but it is normally held between 5th and 15th July. The Pageant begins at about 8 p.m. First we are given a glimpse of village life in Celtic times. Then suddenly Viking long ships appear and then there are scenes of war. Then Celts and Vikings unite, and the Manx nation is born. The actual Pageant is followed by a grand torchlight procession and firework display.

G. Do you like Latin American dancing? Do you want to dance like you see in the films and on the stage? Do you want to feel the rhythm of the music in your body and in your soul? Do you want to meet other people who have a love for the same music as you? If you have answered “Yes” to any of these questions, join our Latin dance classes on Thursday night between seven and ten. All are welcome.

Martin: Hi, Denise! Long time no see!

Denise: Oh, Martin, hi! Good to see you back on campus again! How are you? How was your summer?

Martin: Not too bad. I had the whole month of June to have fun and visit my grandparents who live in Florida.

Denise: Oh, nice! Do they live on the seashore?

Martin: Yes they do! Visiting them has been the highlight of my summers since I was a kid. That’s where I learnt to swim, to dive and to surf.

Denise: No kidding! You are a surfer?

Martin: Yes I am.

Denise: This is so cool! I only had 2 weeks to really relax.

Martin: Why is that?

Denise: I had to work. I applied for an internship and got accepted by a really good publishing company.

Martin: A publishing company! That’s right, you want to work in book publishing when you graduate, right?

Denise: Well, this is my dream. I’m not sure if it’ll come true, though.

Martin: So what was your internship? What did you do?

Denise: All sorts of things — which was actually good, because I learnt so much about how a publishing house works. In the 3 months that I worked there, I had the chance to take a look at different departments and how a book is prepared for publishing.

Martin: Did they pay you? Did you have a proper salary?

Denise: Yes, it was a paid internship. Good companies do pay their interns these days, you know. It’s considered the right thing to do.

Martin: You bet it’s the right thing to do! Getting experience is great, of course, but slaving away all summer for just experience doesn’t sound that good.

Denise: It’s not like my salary was huge, but good enough. So I’m very happy.

What about you? Didn’t you get an internship?

Martin: I tried. But I guess I applied too late and wasn’t accepted anywhere. So I just helped my dad in his company.

Denise: What does he do?

Martin: He’s in real estate. He buys and sells houses.

Denise: But aren’t you majoring in business administration? This kind of work was a sort of internship for you.

Martin: Yeah, I guess it was. It just wasn’t that exciting — working for my dad.

I’ve done that before. I wanted something new, you know.

Denise: Well, maybe next year you’ll have more luck.

Martin: I hope so.

Denise: Well, it was good seeing you! I guess, I’ll see you around. I need to run to class now.

Martin: Sure! Bye!

It is vital that teenagers find effective ways to relax, given the numerous challenges they face in their daily lives. As part of my project on how teenagers in Zetland relax after a busy day, I have found a table with relevant data. In this essay, I will analyse the data and give my opinion on the subject of the project.

The table clearly shows that the survey participants have diverse preferences when it comes to choosing activities for relaxation after a hectic day. Having a hobby tops the table, with 38% of the teenagers indicating that this is their preferred way to unwind. Spending time with friends is a close second (31%). Eating tasty food, by contrast, attracts only 6% of those surveyed.

Interestingly, for the polled teenagers, sleeping (15%) and taking outdoor walks (10%) do not provide as much relaxation as hobbies or socialising with friends. This suggests that social interaction and active engagement are more important components of relaxation for the respondents than solitary and passive activities.

It is worth noting that cost can be a barrier to accessing certain forms of relaxation, limiting options for those on a tight budget. This is a common problem that can arise with having a rest. One possible solution to this problem is to opt for low-cost or free alternatives that offer a similar way of relaxation.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that relaxing well is an important aspect of our lives, as it helps to alleviate stress and prevent burnout. Taking time to relax can help to increase creativity, boost productivity, and improve overall quality of life.

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

A curious toy was created by a group of American scientists. It’s a dog robot with artificial intelligence. Unlike dogs, there is no need to feed it or walk with it. A video camera inside the robot allows it to distinguish colours and determine distances, two stereo tape-recorders help it to remember words, the sensitive sensors on its body provide the ability to respond to the touches and change of temperatures. The dog robot can jump, run, sit, lie and even wag its tail. Like any alive dog it can grow and be taught. At first the dog doesn’t react well enough to your commands. But as it grows it begins to distinguish up to forty different commands. It also acquires its own individual habits. The character of «the dog» is formed by the owner. The electronic mind «remembers» the owner’s approval and disapproval. Like an alive dog it has its favourite and unloved places in the flat. Bear in mind that if the owner doesn’t pay attention to his «pet», it falls into depression.

It is important that you use common sense as well as always take lifejackets with you.

In the Nick of Time

Jason Noorthoek Jr. didn’t want to go outside. It was pitch-black, and he was afraid there might be coyotes «as big as pigs’. But the 12-year-old didn’t have a choice. His mother, Brenda, was worried about his father and demanded he go. Every evening after he got home from work, Jason Noorthoek Sr. worked on cars in the driveway, but on this night he had to fix Brenda’s car, which had been stalling for days. Usually, Brenda heard her husband come in and out of the house to gather his tools, but not tonight. She hadn’t heard a thing for at least an hour. «Go and find him,» she told Jason and his sister, Jamie.

It was a chilly October night with just ten days left until Halloween. In the darkness, the two kids edged towards the Buick. Jason waved a tiny flashlight from side to side. «Dad? Dad?» he called into the shadows. «Jason?» It was his father, but his voice sounded different. He talked slowly, in a way that Jason would later describe as «hurt.»

Earlier that evening, as the sun was just about to set, Noorthoek diagnosed the Buick’s problem: a faulty fuel pump. That meant he’d have to get underneath the car. Normally, he’d use a jack to lift it, but it was getting dark and he wasn’t dressed warmly, so to speed things up, he used the forklift he’d recently bought for his salvage business.

Noorthoek slid the forks under the Buick’s back bumper and then raised the car until its back end was two feet off the ground. After he crawled under the car, he saw that the forklift had bent the exhaust pipe. He gave the pipe a kick to bend it back into shape. «I’m always the first one to preach safety,» he says, thinking back on the one precaution he forgot to take. Noorthoek didn’t place blocks in front of the car’s front tires to keep it from rolling forward off the forks. Which is exactly what it did after he gave the exhaust pipe a couple more kicks.

Jason saw his dad’s feet sticking out from underneath the car. By now, Noorthoek had been trapped for almost an hour, with the crooked exhaust pipe pushing into his chest. Unable to take a full breath, he shivered in the cold and drifted in and out of consciousness. Jamie ran into the house and told her mother to call for help.

Jason knew that his mother and sister couldn’t lift the four-door sedan, but that didn’t stop them from trying. When it didn’t budge, the two started to panic. «Calm down. It’ll be okay,» Jason said softly.

The sixth grader had driven the forklift only once before, and he’d nearly smashed it into a parked car. At 90 pounds, he didn’t have the strength to depress the 10,000-pound vehicle’s brakes. Ever since, he’d been afraid to get back on. But now Jason couldn’t afford to be scared. He climbed on and started it up. «Every time he turned the ignition key, it pushed the car forward onto me,» his father says. «I kept saying, „Neutral! Neutral!“»

Jason figured out the machine’s complicated gearshift and moved it into neutral as he slid the forks under the car. He pulled a lever, and the Buick started to rise. Finally, the tires were off the ground and Noorthoek could breathe again – for a moment. Like his dad, Jason forgot to put blocks in front of the tires. As the back end of the car rose into the air, the car rolled forward again and crashed back onto Noorthoek.

Desperate now, Jason pulled the forklift’s lever once more. Again, the Buick started to come off the ground, but this time, for whatever reason, the front tires didn’t roll and the car remained suspended in the air.

Minutes later, Township’s fire chief, Mike Rexford, arrived. Noorthoek lay under the car, ashen but breathing. His internal injuries were minor, but, according to Rexford, his situation was perilous. «The outcome’s never been this good,» he now says. «How long could he have lasted like that?»

It wasn’t until his dad was loaded into an ambulance that the magnitude of the night’s events caught up with Jason. «I told him he probably saved his father,» says Rexford. Jason broke down and started to sob.

His father was released from the hospital early the next morning. «I didn’t stop shaking until I got home,» Noorthoek says. Jason says one happy change has come out of the accident: he gets to spend more time with his dad. Jason Sr., who hasn’t touched a car since the Buick fell on him, often spends evenings with Jason playing video games.

  • создавать письменное высказывание с элементами рассуждения на основе таблицы или диаграммы в предложенной ситуации работы над проектом;
  • понимать представленную в виде таблицы или диаграммы информацию и уметь описывать ее;
  • сравнивать представленные факты;
  • выделять проблемы и предлагать пути их решения;
  • в письменной форме выражать свое мнение/суждение по предложенному аспекту темы проектной работы;
  • использовать нейтральный стиль для письменного развернутого высказывания с элементами рассуждения на основе таблицы/диаграммы;
  • применять в тексте средства логической связи;
  • логично разбивать текст на смысловые блоки — абзацы;
  • активно использовать имеющийся словарный запас и знакомые грамматические конструкции при создании письменных текстов;
  • уметь перефразировать тему и показать ее дискуссионный характер;

Imagine that you are doing a project on how teenagers relax after a busy day in Zetland. You have found some data on the subject – the results of the opinion polls (see the table below). Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Having a hobby (посвящают время хобби) — 38%

Spending time with friends

– outline a problem that one can face studying literature and suggest a way of solving it (обрисуйте проблему, с которой можно столкнуться при изучении литературы, и предложите способ ее решения);

– conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the importance of studying literature

(I’m, he’s, don’t, aren’t, can’t, didn’t и т.п.).

1. Вступление. В первой части нужно перефразировать тему и показать ее дискуссионный характер; написать, что вы выполняете проектную работу, что нашли статистические данные по данной теме и собираетесь их представить. Не нужно писать, что вы самостоятельно собрали сведения/провели исследование и т.п. По условиям задания данные предоставляются в готовом виде;

«According to the table/diagram/results of the opinion poll» — «

или «To begin with, I would like to say/mention that…»

Clearly… —

The data analysis reveals the fact that…

The results of the opinion poll invite comparison / allow me to make some comparisons. —

Undoubtedly… —

It is important to note that…

In my opinion / I believe / I think —

In conclusion… —

I would like to express my opinion on — Я хотел бы высказать свое мнение по …

  • In my opinion — На мой взгляд;
  • To begin with, I would like to say/mention that… — Для начала я хотел бы сказать/упомянуть, что…;
  • Furthermore — кроме того;
  • Consequently — следовательно;
  • Moreover — более того;
  • It is important to note that… — Важно отметить, что… ;
  • Eventually — в итоге;
  • According to some experts… — По мнению ряда экспертов…;
  • The data analysis reveals the fact that… — Анализ данных показывает тот факт, что… ;
  • Strangely enough — как ни странно;
  • Although — хотя;
  • In addition to this — в дополнение к этому;
  • Nonetheless — тем не менее;
  • For the most part — по большей части;
  • To sum everything up I came to conclusion that… — Подводя итог всему, я пришел к выводу, что…;
  • In conclusion, I would like to express my opinion on…

Spending free time has always been fun for teenagers. While doing a project on how teenagers relax after a busy day in Zetland, I have found a table containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the table, approximately third of all the teenagers in Zetland choose having a hobby or spending time with friends as their favorite pastime (38% and 31% respectively). Sleeping comes third in popularity with 15% of the surveyed. Surprisingly, only 6% of the respondents like eating tasty food in order to relax after a busy day, and it is the least preferred free time activity.

The data analysis reveals that walking in the open air, chosen by 10% of the adolescents, is almost three times less popular than hanging out with friends. It is quite understandable why walking in parks and gardens is less preferable: modern teenagers like meeting in the shopping centers, cafes and cinemas.

Although modern teenagers are quite active in spending their free time, they seem to neglect reading and other ways of broadening their horizons, so it seems to be a problem. To solve this problem local authorities could promote reading in public places like parks or youth centers by involving celebrities into this activity. Thus, reading and discussing could regain their popularity as a way of relaxing after a busy day.

In conclusion, I believe relaxing well is very important in our lives. Working hard is good but having a rest is essential.

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of a good rest. I’ve made up my mind to do a project on how teenagers in Zetland relax after a busy day and found the data results of the opinion polls to give some of my ideas.

According to the table’s results 38% of all respondents prefer being engaged in hobbies after a busy day, and delicious food is the least popular way of relaxing that only stands at 6% of teenagers’ choice. Teenagers spend free time with their friends as well as sleep and walk in the fresh air to relax after a hard day.

One can see from the poll that spending time with friends (31% of surveyed) is almost twice as popular as sleeping, which is only 15 per cent, and almost three times more popular than walking in the fresh air chosen by 10%. It is an open secret that teenagers need enough time for communication in order to have social skills.

As we can see, there are several ways to relax for teenagers, and a problem with relaxation exists indeed. It’s not always possible to distract from school and work reflexing on what has been done. I believe that going out and doing sports are the best ways to solve the problems as they can keep strong health and forget about current problems for a while.

I am convinced that relaxation is extremely important for everyone as it creates positive thinking and helps concentration and memory development.
