Расшифровка записи

Interviewer: Hello everyone and welcome to our daily program «Stardom». Today in our studio we have Jessica Summer, a young promising musician. Hello, Jessica.

Jessica: Hello, it’s so nice being here, thank you for inviting me.

Interviewer: Your new album has been warmly welcome by the public. Have you got any critical remarks about it?

Jessica: I’ve got a couple of remarks. They are about me being just another pretty girl singing about love and relationships. I can’t say it was a massive take down, but I found it personally offensive. I think the reason that stuck with me was because I found it so frustrating, but actually, that’s kind of the only proper negative feedback that I’ve had. Then, in terms of compliments I just can’t really remember them because you always tend to stick a bit more on the negatives, don’t you?

Interviewer: Would you consider yourself a self-critical person?

Jessica: Yeah, massively. I’m self-critical, I don’t want to show anyone anything until the work is done, I self-edit so harshly at the beginning. I would never let anyone hear something that I wasn’t happy with, but then once I’ve made it I’m also not going to turn around and go. If I’m putting it out, anything creative that I do, I think that it’s good, otherwise I wouldn’t put it out, but I am self-critical across the board and in other areas of my life, I think.

Interviewer: How fully formed are your songs by the time you bring them to a producer, show someone lyrics or play them for someone?

Jessica: Like completely finished. Lyrics are usually the last things that I would do, so a couple of the lyrics I will be finishing in the studio last minute, because we’ve got to get the vocals recorded. I sometimes find lyrics quite difficult towards the end, but it’s done musically in terms of the structure and terms of the arrangement. So it’s awfully formed. I have no one else involved in the writing process. I would hate to feel that I was going into the studio with something wishy-washy and not done. It’s because I’m a control freak, so I want to know that everything is sorted and what’s going to come out in the end, obviously with a bit of leeway.

Interviewer: What has the experience been like playing these songs live?

Jessica: It’s just been really fun! It’s the music I always imagined myself playing when I was a kid. It’d be nice to use my instrument a bit more rather than just propping just a whole song with a guitar and my vocals. There is so much more energy in the crowd as well, and it’s nice to feel like you’re a part of something in a room rather than just performing for a crowd. So I’ve enjoyed it loads and it’s also been an exciting challenge, because recently I have been taking all the material and basically giving it a bit of a second life, and making it sound like it could potentially belong on this record, which has been really fun.

Interviewer: Are there any particular shows that stand out in your mind?

Jessica: On a tour the big London show is always going to be very exciting. A couple of weeks ago I played in London, which is the biggest show I’ve ever headlined, that was a real moment and it was playing all the new material. It was amazing to see the shift and seeing everyone singing everything back, but there have been smaller shows in my life that made me happy, but bad shows… It’s always the support shows, isn’t it? It’s when you are struggling to fight against the noise of the crowd, that’s always quite soul destroying.

Interviewer: Thank you, Jessica. It has been a real pleasure talking with you today.

1. То take from home

2. Evening drinks

3. Food for relaxation

4. Skipping the meal

5. Foreign cuisine

6. Unusual meals

7. Traditional morning meal

8. Take it ready to eat

A. If you go to a hotel in Britain and ask for a typical English breakfast, you will probably get bacon and eggs, sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, tea and toast. When porridge juice are offered as well, the meal is sometimes advertised as a «full Engilsh breakfast». Many years ago people couldn’t imagine their breakfast without a bowl of cerea or usual bacon and eggs.

B. But how many people in England actually eat an English breakfast? Only one person in ten. One in five people say all they have for breakfast is a cup of coffee, and many children go to school without eating anything. That is happening because people lack time. They are always in a hurry and prefer to choose something light and ready-made, especially in the morning.

C. If in Britain you stay with a family, you will almost certainly be given a «packed lunch» to eat for your midday meal. Some factories and schools have canteens where a packed lunch is the most common thing to eat. A packed lunch usually consists of some sandwiches, a packet of crisps, an apple, and a can of something to drink, for example, Coca-Cola. The quality of the packed lunch can vary.

D. Fish and chips is the classic English takeaway food. It is usually bought ready cooked at special shops — fish and chip shops, or «chippies» as they are sometimes called. This takeaway food is wrapped in paper to be eaten at home or outside. If you go to a fish and chip shop, you’ll be asked if you want salt and vinegar to be sprinkled over your chips. Be careful because sometimes they give you too much.

E. If you have trouble getting off to sleep, don’t panic. There are plenty of healthy, low fat alternatives to pills to help you nod off. Why not try a glass of warm skimmed milk, or even a cup of camomile tea? These natural and low-fat drinks will help you to get asleep. They can also relax you after a difficult day.

F. Every British town has Indian or Chinese restaurants. There are more Chinese takeaways than there are fish and chips shops in the UK. But most people are eating curry Curry is now Britain’s most popular meal because the majority of British people like spicy food. But British people like food from other countries, too. They say it allows them to understand other cultures better.

G. Eating carbohydrate-rich foods like bread, cereal, rice and pasta causes the production of serotonin, which makes us feel calm. Fruit and vegetables also set off the production of this chemical. Milk and cheese are also useful. The next time you feel stressed, try a little piece of bread and a glass of milk and you’ll feel better in no time.

Lesson in humility

I was nine when this started. That was in 1964, the year my mother left us. Chess led me to Horatio — chess and my father and my absent mother and the fact that on that day, I broke the rule about not showing what you feel. My form-master of that year at the private day-school I went to was a chess enthusiast. He explained the rules to us, he encouraged us to play. He was kind to me and I admired him, more than admired: I wanted to be where he was. I suppose I was more than usually responsive to kindness just at that time. To please him I tried hard to be good at chess and I discovered that I was good. I had a natural talent, the master said.

I joined the school chess club. I took part in tournaments and distinguished myself. Shining at few things, for a brief season I shone at chess. I studied the game, I read the accounts of historic encounters, the ploys of long-dead masters, and I played them out alone. I would set out the pieces at random, then sweep them off and try to replace them from memory. At night, I would picture the chess board, go through the moves of some legendary end-game and find consolation.

A colleague of my father was there one Sunday afternoon — my father was a senior official at the Treasury. «Your father tells me you are quite a chess-player.” On his reddish face an indulgent look. «At least by his own report,” my father said with a sarcastic smile. He seemed to suggest I had boasted. Perhaps I had. “Not up to your level, Henry, not yet.» Henry, Harry, Humphrey. A chessplayer ot note. Fancy a game, young man?

We played and I won. He still had half his pieces on the board when l checkmated him. I leasure in victory, expectation of praise — face and voice were not yet practiced enough, I suppose I showed my feelings too clearly. My father looked at me, but uttered no word. He went out, came back with a book from his study, brought it over for me to see. “Look here,” he said, the colleague meanwhile looking on. “Look at these people here.”

He had opened the book roughly in the middle. There were two faces, one on either side: William Pitt the Younger and Horatio Nelson. Neither name meant anything to me at the time. Later, ot course, I knew them tor close contemporaries -Horatio was a year older and died three months earlier.

“Take a good look,” my father said. “These two men saved our country, they had reason to be pleased with themselves.”

He meant it for my benefit or so I like to think. He did not want me to be jubilant in victory, to overrate small achievements. He wanted to inspire me with worthy ambitions. But in his mannei and tone I sensed displeasure; he was not pleased at my success, it had disturbed his sense of the natural order.

My interest in chess did not long survive that day, the lesson in humility proved the death-blow to it. I continued to play during what was left of the term, but my heart was not in it, I lost the appetite for victory, my game fell off. In the autumn, Monty and I were sent away to boarding school and I never played chess again.

Speaker A: My family and I used to go camping when I was a kid. We had such great fun together, sitting by the campfire, roasting marshmallows and telling stories. I didn’t pay much attention to it then> but some of our fellow campers had some bad habits. You would see empty crisp packets and plastic bottles here and there. It wasn’t enough to put you off, but still, the campers should have taken those things with them on their way out.

Speaker B: We’ve all read those terrible stories about the state of the world’s forests, that they’re being cut down or burnt down and little is being done to stop it. It’s disheartening to say the least. I realise that countries grow and need space to accommodate their expanding populations. But still, whenever they clear the woods to build a new residential area, they are destroying wildlife habitat. Where are the birds and the animals going to live?

Speaker С: Camping is a terrific pastime. Still, there are rules to follow when camping in a forest. Breaking some of the rules might not land you in hot water; but one that will is walking away from a campfire while it’s still burning. Even if it’s just on its last smoking embers, all it takes is a few dried leaves to create a raging inferno. You’ll destroy the forest and harm the animals who live there.

Speaker D: Forests are cleared for a number of reasons, and sadly, the progress of mankind has been bad news for our planets trees. As our population continues to grow, more people need food to put on their dinner table. And that means more needs to be grown. Forests have disappeared because land was needed to grow vegetables or herd cattle. It’s too bad we can’t find a way to produce the things we eat without tearing down a forest to do it.

Speaker E: When a fire is ravaging a forest, it’s hard to stop it. The firemen do their job, although their main concern is saving homes. After the fire ends, there’s a mess left to deal with. A forest regenerates over time, but there are organisations that can give it a boost. They gather seeds and plant them in individual containers. When the trees are big enough, they plant them in the forest, giving it a chance to regenerate faster.

Speaker F: On a recent camping trip, my friend spotted a raccoon while we were sitting by the campfire. It quickly ran away when we noticed it, and my friend left the fire to see where it went. She found its whole family in a tree! But I remember her saying, ‘One day, their home could be gone!’ She was right. Many trees are cut down just to end up as someone’s desk. I hope that never happens to that tree.

Jessica: Well, look who’s back from Paris! How was your trip, Rob?

Rob: Hey Jessica, it was really fantastic. I totally loved it. It was a bit tiring, walking round so much, but it was worth it. We definitely had some adventures.

Jessica: I imagine you did! I wanted to go with you but it was very bad timing, what with my family moving house. That was a really big job, you know.

Rob: Right. Well, hopefully you’re all settled in.

Jessica: There are still lots of things to do, unpacking boxes, hanging pictures on the wall, that sort of stuff And I’m not quite used to the new house yet. I’m sure I’ll get used to it in time. So, tell me more about your trip.

Rob: Well, the first day we did the typical tourist things. We walked down the Champs-Elysees, which was remarkable. Then we walked to the Eiffel Tower. The goal was the go to the top, but not in the way we actually did it!

Jessica: Oh, how so?

Rob: The queue for the lift was about two hours long. But the one for the stairs was non-existent! So we decided to climb!

Jessica: Oh, wow. That’s interesting. Good exercise! How long did it take you?

Rob: It took us about forty-five minutes. The view was really spectacular. You can’t take the stairs all the way to the top, though. At some point you have to catch the lift. So we had to wait in the queue for that, although not for very long.

Jessica: Sounds as if you had a great time at the tower. What else did you do?

Rob: The next day we visited the Louvre. Like I said, we did all the touristy stuff Although I have to say, I didn’t feel like a tourist there. It was a very cultural experience. We saw the Mona Lisa and loads of other paintings and statues. The museum is huge as well. That was an all-day event!

Jessica: Oh, I’m so jealous! I’m going to have to beg my parents to take me. It’s all their fault, deciding to move house when my classmates take a trip to Paris!

Rob: Ha! Yeah, that’s a good excuse to get them to take you there. Good luck with that!

Jessica: I’ve got to run, but let’s talk more later, OK?

Rob: Deal. See you later, Jessica.

Presenter: Hi folks and welcome to the show, Easy Living. With us today is Lisa Jones. She’s here to talk about her job as a personal shopper. Thanks for joining the programme, Lisa.

Speaker: I’m happy to be here.

Presenter: So tell us what you do as a personal shopper.

Speaker: A personal shopper does a number of things. We’re stylists, so we help people find the right clothes for their lifestyle. We also advise on what type of clothes to buy, which is based on body type as well as personal style, and we advise on how to take care of clothes – whether a type of clothing will shrink in the wash or if it must be drycleaned.

Presenter: How does that work exactly? Can anyone just make an appointment?

Speaker: That’s right. You ring up the shop, or you can visit their website, and you book an appointment. Appointments usually last for about an hour and a half. 7here’s no extra fee for it, actually. I’m paid a percentage of the clothing they buy

Presenter: So you hope they buy a lot of clothes, yes?

Speaker: My number one goal is that they leave the shop satisfied. I don’t want to come over like a salesperson. There are other people in the shop with that role. If I seem that way, I’m not really doing my job. So my focus is on finding the right clothes for the right person.

Presenter: How do you go about doing that?

Speaker: As I said before, a person’s body type is the biggest consideration. Many people buy clothes that don’t fit properly. Because of my experience, I know what styles work best for that. I also try to learn about the client’s lifestyle. Maybe they have a high-level executive position, but also like to socialise in the evenings, so they want clothes that work for both occasions. Others want casual clothes or outfits for different purposes.

Presenter: Do you feel that a lot of people have trouble picking out outfits?

Speaker: Some clients have a good idea of what they want and make sensible choices on their own, but they’d like a second opinion. Others are harder work. I’ve had women who insisted on buying certain colours that didn’t work for their skin type and hair colour. I had to say, “Let’s just try this on and tell me what you think.” Once I’d got them into the right clothes, they were surprised at the difference it made.

Presenter: Do you ever have men booking appointments?

Speaker: More and more often, yes. I don’t do appointments with men myself. We have another personal shopper for that department He’s quite busy and from what I understand, there are easier things about choosing for men, and more difficult things, too. He explains that the men are usually more open to trying new things, but they don’t have a clue about clothes. I think he’s got his work cut out for him!
