This was going to be the _________THREE_________ time in one week and that was too much even for Mrs Pitt. After school, I decided to go to university. I ________CHOOSE__________ St Andrews University in Scotland. Because the weather is famously cold, St Andrews students designed _________THEY_________ own uniform which consists of a warm jacket, jeans and boat shoes. Reading is one of the most popular pastimes and books are one of the main sources of knowledge. Everyone knows this but, _________FORTUNATELY_________, there are many young people who don’t like to read. They say it is not cool but I firmly _________AGREE_________ with them. Books have the ability to take you to another world, to wake up your _________IMAGINE_________ and transport you to places you’ve never been to. “If the weather is fine, we _________GO_________ on a trip next weekend,” Dad said and put his magazine on the coffee table.

Stonehenge is an ancient monument in south-west England. For me, it’s the _________INTERESTING_________ place I’ve ever visited. I clearly remember my _________ONE_________ visit to Stonehenge with my aunt and uncle. They lived nearby and I often _________GO_________ to stay with them in my summer holidays. On the day of _________WE_________ trip the weather was fine. There _________BE_________ a cool wind blowing, the sun was bright in the sky and Stonehenge looked calm and magical. In those days it was possible to walk among the stones and even touch them. It’s very different now. Stonehenge _________BECOME_________ more crowded than it was. As a result, now people _________ALLOW_________ to walk around the monument but they can’t come up very close to it. Today I wish I _________HAVE_________ an opportunity to get inside the circle again but unfortunately it is not possible any more. The Stonehenge mystery is still unexplained but I believe scientists _________SOLVE_________ it in the near future. 

The Turners were not used to snow. The most they ever got in Birmingham was an inch or so each winter. Even that happened quite _________RARE_________. The _________FUN_________ thing was that a tiny bit of snow was enough to cancel school and even to close some businesses. One night, in March of 1993, something very _________EXCITE_________ happened. Very cold air from Canada created the «Storm of the Century». When the Turner kids woke up on Saturday morning, there were 17 inches of ________WONDER_________ snow as far as the eye could see. The Turners were in shock. They had no idea what to do. Though Mr. Turner was an experienced _________DRIVE_________ he chose to leave his car in the garage. He wanted the whole family to stay at home but it was natural for the kids to _________AGREE_________ with him. They put on the warmest clothes they had and ran outside to enjoy the snow. 

Kate called me early in the morning. It was the _________TWO_________ day of holidays; I felt angry with her for waking me up.

Portobello Road is the right place to go if you want to buy unique and _________USUAL_________ things. Shopping in London is always an ________EXCITE_________ experience and it’s worth trying. 

Martin was in a hurry as he had to be in the office as soon as possible. His boss _________NOT/LIKE_________ it when anyone missed the morning meetings and Martin had already been late several times that week. His boss had warned him: “If you are late again, you _________LOSE_________ your job.” Martin was afraid of losing his job. His colleagues were nice to him, the salary was good and he sometimes ________GO__________ on business trips abroad. It was actually the _________GOOD_________ job he had ever had. He ran out of the house, jumped into his car and backed up without looking. BOOM! There _________BE_________ a sound like someone hitting a drum. Martin had hit the car behind him.

Piranhas are South American fish. There are lots of scary stories about them. Most people think that piranhas are very _________DANGER_________ creatures. However, a _________SCIENCE_________ from St Andrews University, Anne Magurran, has recently announced that to call piranhas cruel killers is not fair. They _________USUAL_________ eat fish, plants and insects. According to Professor Anne Magurran, piranhas attack people and animals only when they want to defend themselves. However, most travellers strongly ________AGREE__________ with this point of view. They recommend keeping away from the water where piranhas live. When the fish attack in groups, it is practically _________POSSIBLE_________ to survive. Whatever your opinion of piranhas, this is a ________USE__________ piece of advice one should follow. 

Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood were our neighbours. They had two ________CHILD__________. Their son Michael __________NOT/DIFFER________ from the other children very much, but their daughter Matilda was a brilliant child.

The 5th of November is Guy Fawkes Night. A. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world’s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.

‘No,’ said Janetta, with a note of tired defiance in her voice; ‘I’ve written eleven letters today expressing surprise and gratitude for sundry unmerited gifts, but I haven’t written to the Froplinsons yet.’

‘Someone will have to do it,’ said Egbert.

‘I don’t dispute the necessity, but I don’t think that someone should be me,’ said Janetta. ‘I wouldn’t mind writing a letter of angry recrimination or heartless satire to some suitable recipient. In fact, I should rather enjoy it, but I’ve come to the end of my capacity for expressing servile amiability. Eleven letters today and nine yesterday, all couched in the same strain of ecstatic thankfulness: really, you can’t expect me to sit down to another. There is such a thing as writing oneself out.’

‘I’ve written nearly as many,’ said Egbert, ‘and I’ve had my usual business correspondence to get through, too. Besides, I don’t know what it was that the Froplinsons sent us.’ ‘A William the Conqueror calendar,’ said Janetta, ‘with a quotation of one of his great thoughts for every day in the year.’

‘Impossible,’ said Egbert; ‘he didn’t have three hundred and sixty-five thoughts in the whole of his life, or, if he did, he kept them to himself.’

‘Well, it was William Wordsworth, then,’ said Janetta; ‘I know William came into it somewhere.’

‘That sounds more probable,’ said Egbert; ‘well, let’s collaborate on this letter and get it done. I’ll dictate, and you can scribble it down. ‘Dear Mrs. Froplinson, thank you and your husband so much for the very pretty calendar you sent us. It was very good of you to think of us.’ ’

‘You can’t possibly say that,’ said Janetta, laying down her pen. ‘We sent them something on the twenty-second,’ said Janetta, ‘so they simply had to think of us. There was no getting away from it.’

‘What did we send them?’ asked Egbert gloomily.

‘Bridge-markers,’ said Janetta, ‘in a cardboard case, with some inanity about ‘digging for fortune with a royal spade’ emblazoned on the cover. The moment I saw it in the shop I said to myself ‘Froplinsons’ and to the attendant ‘How much?’ When he said ‘Ninepence,’ I gave him their address, jabbed our card in, paid tenpence or elevenpence to cover the postage, and thanked heaven. With less sincerity and infinitely more trouble they eventually thanked me.’

‘The Froplinsons don’t play bridge,’ said Egbert.

‘One is not supposed to notice social deformities of that sort,’ said Janetta; ‘it wouldn’t be polite. Besides, what trouble did they take to find out whether we read Wordsworth with gladness? For all they knew or cared we might be frantically embedded in the belief that all poetry begins and ends with John Masefield, and it might infuriate or depress us to have a daily sample of Wordsworthian products flung at us.’

‘Well, let’s get on with the letter,’ said Egbert. ‘How clever of you to guess that Wordsworth is our favourite poet.’

Again Janetta laid down her pen.

‘Do you realise what that means?’ she asked; ‘a Wordsworth booklet next Christmas, and another calendar the Christmas after, with the same problem of having to write suitable letters of thankfulness. No, the best thing to do is to drop all further allusion to the calendar and switch off on to some other topic.’

‘But what other topic?’

‘Oh, something like this: ‘What do you think of the New Year Honours List? A friend of ours made such a clever remark when he read it.’ Then you can stick in any remark that comes into your head; it needn’t be clever. The Froplinsons won’t know whether it is or isn’t.’

‘We don’t even know on which side they are in politics,’ objected Egbert; ‘and anyhow you can’t suddenly dismiss the subject of the calendar. Surely there must be some intelligent remark that can be made about it.’

‘Well, we can’t think of one,’ said Janetta wearily; ‘the fact is, we’ve both written ourselves out.’

There was a long silence, the forlorn silence of those who are bereft of hope and have almost ceased to care. Then Egbert started from his seat with an air of resolution. The light of battle was in his eyes.

‘Let me come to the writing-table,’ he exclaimed; ‘I’m going to write to the editor of every enlightened and influential newspaper in the Kingdom, I’m going to suggest that there should be a sort of epistolary Truce of God during the festivities of Christmas and New Year. From the twenty-fourth of December to the third or fourth of January it shall be considered an offence against good sense and good feeling to write or expect any letter or communication that does not deal with the necessary events of the moment. Answers to invitations, arrangements about trains, renewal of club subscriptions, and, of course, all the ordinary everyday affairs of business, sickness, engaging new cooks, and so forth, these will be dealt with in the usual manner as something inevitable. But all the devastating accretions of correspondence, incident to the festive season, these should be swept away to give the season a chance of being really festive.’

‘But you would have to make some acknowledgment of presents received,’ objected Janetta; ‘otherwise people would never know whether they had arrived safely.’

‘Of course, I have thought of that,’ said Egbert; ‘every present that was sent off would be accompanied by a ticket bearing the date of dispatch and the signature of the sender, and some conventional hieroglyphic to show that it was intended to be a Christmas or New Year gift; there would be a counterfoil with space for the recipient’s name and the date of arrival, and all you would have to do would be to sign and date the counterfoil, add a conventional hieroglyphic indicating heartfelt thanks and gratified surprise, put the thing into an envelope and post it.’

‘It sounds delightfully simple,’ said Janetta wistfully, ‘but people would consider it too perfunctory.’

‘It is not a bit more perfunctory than the present system,’ said Egbert; ‘I have only the same conventional language of gratitude at my disposal with which to thank dear old Colonel Chuttle for his perfectly delicious Stilton, which we shall devour to the last morsel, and the Froplinsons for their calendar, which we shall never look at. So you see the present system of acknowledgment is just as perfunctory and conventional as the counterfoil business would be, only ten times more tiresome and brain-racking.’

‘Your plan would certainly bring the idea of a Happy Christmas a step nearer realisation,’ said Janetta. ‘Meanwhile, what am I to say to the Froplinsons?’

We were well looked after by the nuns in St Anne’s. I do recall being excited on return after holidays as we used to get a Sticky Bun and mini bottle of milk once a week. I think the reason was to help those disadvantaged children to have at least some food in them going home. We were far from being disadvantaged but the nuns were able to get everyone a Sticky Bun in, I suppose, a «Loaves & Fishes» sort of way. Our teacher Miss Wright went even further with the TLC by putting the mini bottles of milk, which came off the back of a milkcart, into her bosom to take the chill off the bottle. God help us today if such were to happen it would need a tribunal to explain the emotional trauma on the young ……etc,etc,etc but we lived for the once a week treat.

Back to school always happened for me as soon as my mum brought me to Greene’s bookshop in Clare Street to buy that year’s schoolbooks. Greene’s was an institution for most of the schoolchildren of my era as just about everyone bought their books there. We would try to get in early to beat the queues, but everyone else usually had the same idea and you’d quite often be waiting for over an hour before you reached the counter and handed over your list of books. There was always a worry that they wouldn’t have one — I was quite panicky about making sure I had them all in time.Once I got the books home the next task was to cover them, either in brown paper or old cuts of wallpaper. I always put my favourite paper on my English books and the boring brown paper on the maths!

On long summer nights when we were boys, we hadn’t a care in the world. I never needed to know what time it was or to glance at my watch. We played football, hurling and soccer until darkness fell. Going to bed when it was still bright outside was the first sign that it was back-to-school time. The next morning brought with it a real sense of excitement but that was quickly tempered by the lead weight on my back, also known as a schoolbag. I would place my thumbs on my shoulders, trying to ease the pain as the straps dug into my shoulders. It felt more like a pilgrimage then as I trudged to the school gates. And they said these would be the happiest days of my life! But it wasn’t long before the 12 o’clock bell rang. This was the reason I came to school — soccer in the yard, defending the school gate. We were back, and life felt good again.

I was one of those weird kids who absolutely loved and adored school, while hating with a passion the miserable and ultimately wasted years I spent in college. See? I told you. Weird.

I went to Loreto on the Green, from primary right the way through to Leaving Cert and I can honestly say I never had an unhappy day there. My core group of pals from school are still my closest pals now…something that I value all the more as I get older. But then it’s important to have people around you who can still remind you that you once thought a bubble perm with blue eyeliner and a chunky jumper was a good look. I’m an only girl sandwiched between two brothers, so my schoolpals became almost like surrogate sisters to me. And my abiding back to school memory? Seeing the ads on telly in August, advertising all the paraphernalia kids needed for the year ahead. My brothers would groan and throw things at the telly, but me? I’d nearly have the days counted.

After graduation I even went back to my old school and taught…but that’s a whole other story for another day!

Immediately, I recall the long summers of my childhood on sun-drenched West Cork beaches, happy amongst a cacophony of cousins, rock fishing for crabs through the day and kicking a ball between jumpers long past dusk. Naturally, after such bliss, it was trying to return to the gaunt horror of double Physics, to the endless clanging of school bells, to the dead-eyed war veteran pallor of exhausted teachers, with only the prospect of the long winter ahead, wandering dark corridors weighed down by schoolbooks and T-squares like some sad, pubescent packhorse. However, I’m probably blocking out the many wet summers I spent trailing raindrops down the insides of windscreens, the feeling of swimming pool chlorine working its way through my eyeballs and the emotional scars left after weeks spent fighting my own sister for crisps in the back of a Cortina. So, in reality, going back to school probably wasn’t all that bad…

In September 1989 I started second year in Nenagh CBS. Here’s something I learned on the first day back: You should never start following a band during the summer holidays unless you’re sure they’re cool. I can still see the sick realisation in the eyes of the guy who came back to school sporting a Bros badge and those four terrible letters indelibly markered across his new schoolbag. I have a recurring dream where it’s first day back and I have no timetable or books and everyone else knows where they’re going and what they’re doing and I keep asking the lads where I’m meant to be and what class I’m in but everyone laughs at me and I meet a teacher I have a crush on and she’s being really kind to me even though I’m a smartarse and then I realise I’m 39 and I finished school 22 years ago and I wake up feeling hugely relieved and a small bit disappointed.

When I was younger,I spent a lot of my summers running wild and free in my cousins house in county Clare. My uncle Michael loved fishing and used to pile us all into the back of his battered, chocolate Ford Cortina(no seat belts in those days) and bring us off down to Lahinch or to the windswept grandeur of the Burren where we used to spend hours collecting periwinkles or searching for crabs and jellyfish. I remember one particular evening as if it happened yesterday-I was sitting day-dreaming in his ancient boat looking up at the beauty of the late summer sky when I suddenly realised that it was only about nine o clock yet the light was fading. I knew then that the game was up and in a few days I would be sitting in my grey school uniform in a grey classroom in Bray staring out of the window dreaming of adventure ….Even still, over thirty years later,late August brings up lots of conflicting emotions. As a ten year old,I remember the feelings of loss because the  summer was finally over but at the same time a big part of me was looking forward to getting back into a routine(although I’d rather die than admit this to a living soul) and of course September meant meeting up with all of my friends and there was nothing bad about that!!!

No matter how old we get, back to school memories stay with us for life, stirring up a sense of nostalgia and nerves. Summer sleep-ins became a schedule filled with homework and early morning boarding school wake-up calls. It signalled a transition that brought challenges as well as excitement. The thrill of catching up with cherished friends, swapping stories and friendship bracelets of every colour combination possible, that remained on the wrist until they fell off. The heady smell of chalk dust and new books covered in smooth brown paper. Comparing new, impractical novelty accessories and shiny pencil cases. Trying to hide ripped holes in my oversized hand-me-down jumper my mother convinced me I would grow into. And although the three bittersweet words «back-to-school» meant the end of summer I look back with very fond memories on it all.

A. I believe playing sports is more than an activity to fill your day, it can teach important life lessons. When I was a child, my dad spent a lot of time teaching me how to play different sports. He told me that if I can succeed in sports, I can succeed at anything in life. He used to say, ‘It’s not about how good you become. It’s about working hard to get where you want to be.’

B. I like bicycles. Group rides help me to get new skills and make new friends. I try to apply the tactics of group riding to team work in the real world. In the perfect group ride, each rider takes a turn leading the pack, while the others enjoy the benefits of drafting. I think this way of working is a great method for approaching a group task anywhere.

C. I believe in the power of running. Running should not be a battle for your body but rather a rest for your mind. I felt this last fall, when I was running in the park. Suddenly I felt as if I could have run forever, as if I could use running as a source of therapy for my body. Running allows the body to release different types of stress and even change our understanding of life.

D. My father coached basketball every day of his life, and I was right there with him in the gym watching him work his magic. Basketball appears entertaining and exciting. But the path to success is not simple. My father always told me, ‘Nothing is free.’ I took this advice and ran with it. I truly believe that only practice and determination lead to success.

E. Baseball is so much more than a sport. One of the powers of baseball is that it brings people together. It unites fans of all ages, genders, and nationalities. No matter who you are, you can be a baseball fan. My mom and I have one unspoken rule: no matter what has been going on before, no fighting at the game.

F. I believe that you must always be loyal to the sport teams you support. The teams I follow in the United States generally lose many more than they win. The start of each season brings dreams of victory in baseball, basketball or football, dreams that fade away soon. But then there is always next year. It will be our year for sure.

G. I was determined to join the swim team. I knew I would get my strengths and learn my weaknesses there. Waking up early for 6:30 a.m. practices is what swim team is all about, as it helps us get into state. On a long school day you think about the practice in the pool after school. Scarcely had we settled into the Strawberry-pink Villa before my mother decided that I was running wild, and that it was necessary for me to have some sort of education. As usual when a problem arose, the entire family flung itself with enthusiasm into the task of solving it. Each member had his or her own idea of what was best for me.

Sitting under the open window in the twilight, I had listened with interest, not unmixed with indignation, to the family discussion of my fate. Finally my mother decided that George would be a good teacher for me. Now it was settled, I wondered vaguely who George was, and why it was so necessary for me to have lessons. But the dusk was thick with flower-scents, and the olive-groves were dark, mysterious, and fascinating. I forgot about the imminent danger of being educated, and went off with Roger to hunt for glow-worms in the sprawling brambles.

Later I discovered that George was my brother’s friend and he had come to Corfu to write. There was nothing very unusual about this, for all Larry’s acquaintances in those days were either authors, poets, or painters.

My new teacher came over to the villa to discuss my education with Mother, and we were introduced. We regarded each other with suspicion. George was a very tall and extremely thin man with a brown beard and a pair of large spectacles. He had a deep, melancholy voice, a dry and sarcastic sense of humor. However, he was not upset by the fact that there were no school-books available on the island; he simply looked through his own library and appeared on the appointed day armed with his own selection of books. He patiently taught me Geography from the maps in the back of an ancient copy of Pears Encyclopedia, English from books that ranged from Wilde to Gibbon, French from the book called “Le Petit Larousse”, and mathematics from memory. From my point of view the most important thing was that we devoted some of our time to natural history, and George carefully taught me how to observe and how to note down observations in a diary. At once my enthusiastic interest in nature became focused, for I found that by writing things down I could learn and remember much more. The only morning that I was ever on time for my lessons were those which were given up to natural history.

Every morning at nine George would come into the little dining-room of the villa, sit at the table methodically arranging the books. He would droop over the exercise- book pensively, pulling at his beard. Then in his large, clear writing he would set the task for me to solve.

“If it took two caterpillars a week to eat eight leaves, how long would four caterpillars take to eat the same number? Now, apply yourself to that”.

While I was struggling with the apparently insoluble problem of the caterpillar appetites, George was practicing some dancing moves in the hall as at that time he was engaged in learning some of the local dances, for which he had a passion. Through all this I would be watching him, fascinated, the exercise-book lying forgotten in front of me. Mathematics was not one of our successful subjects. 

In geography we made better progress, for George was able to give a more zoological tinge to the lesson. We drew giant maps and then filled in the various places of interest, together with drawings of the most exciting animals and birds to be found there.

‘Second Stonehenge’ discovered near original

 Archaeologists have discovered evidence of what they believe was a second Stonehenge located a little more than a mile away from the world-famous prehistoric monument.

The new find on the west bank of the river Avon has been called «Bluestonehenge», after the colour of the 25 Welsh stones of A______.

Excavations at the site have suggested there was once a stone circle 10 metres in diameter and surrounded by a henge — a ditch with an external bank, according to the project director, Professor Mike Parker Pearson, of the University of Sheffield.

The stones at the site were removed thousands of years ago but the sizes of the holes in B ______ indicate that this was a circle of bluestones, brought from the Preseli mountains of Wales, 150 miles away.

 The first hoots of laughter from an ancient ancestor of humans could be heard at least 10 million years ago, according to the results of a new study.  For 1,000 years the indigenous Nenets people have migrated along the 450-mile- long Yamal peninsula in northern Russia. In summer they wander northwards, taking their reindeer with them. In winter they return southwards.

My living room and sometimes the garage were my stage. I belonged to a cast of four, which consisted of Heather, my two younger sisters, Lisa and Faith, and I.  In the early 1860s, trains were the preferred way to travel. They weren’t particularly comfortable, however, until American engineer George Mortimer Pullman decided to make trains more luxurious.

The Scout Movement, which is also known as the Boy Scouts has changed massively in more than 100 years, though many people do not realise this.

For many people in Britain the word “scouting” evokes images of boys in short trousers A__________. The Bonfire Night

Letniy Sad

 Letniy Sad (The Summer Garden) is a park ensemble, a monument of landscape art of the 18th century. Letniy Sad is the oldest park in St. Petersburg. The park was founded by Peter I in 1704. The Tsar dreamed of his own Versailles and drew its original plan himself. He planned to create a regular, architectural park with accurate layout and straight paths.
